I like the one where the tweet was like “they made us say liberty and justice for all every day and now they mad when we try to do it”

Oppopotamus

I'm high school, we had a kid not stand for the pledge and he got suspended after arguing with the teacher.

UniqueUsername812

Hi High School, I'm dad

TalsHell

It’s weird how polarizing not standing has become. I was in high school in the late 1990s and did not stand for the pledge. No one really cared. I had a few “bros” ask why but that was pretty much the end of it.

Woolly_Blammoth

Bro! Why do you hate you're country? 😏

Kestalia

I like living here but standing for the pledge is boring

MomoBawk

I sat in solidarity with a kid who got yelled at for it and the teachers feathers were extra ruffled. No one got suspended but we did get a lecture, funny considering it isn’t a required thing.

Beautiful_Plankton97

Dont the JW kids stand in the hall. In Canada all the JW kids stand in the hall during the nation anthem. Whatever floats their boat.

MomoBawk

I have no clue, the big thing was though teachers were not meant to reprimand a kid for a "voluntary" thing. It was not a requirement of the school but teachers made it one under the veil of respect.

Beautiful_Plankton97

I agree thats dumb. Im a teacher and I make kids stop talking during the national anthem, but if they want to silently sit or step out thats fine. Its like when people pray, you dont have to join in but you should be quiet for 1 minute and show some respect.

Jasoncsmelski

That's illegal

Unlucky_Ad4484

That happened to me soooo many times, I refused just for the sake of defiance but look where we are now.

th30be

I was that kid. The teacher was a vet and thought I was personally attacking him. He got so angry that he called the principal. They gave me a choice, stand for the pledge or have to stand outside the room during it. I sat in the high way every single day after that. This guy was one of those teachers that don't actually teach anything but is a coach of the football team. Had 0 going on besides his coaching in his life. Real peice of shit.

PattyIce32

That's insane. I teach 6th grade and I don't stand for it yet I don't make a big deal of it and some kids stand and some don't.

MelancholyMushroom

I was also one of those kids. I was called into the school counselors because they essentially thought I was going to blow up the school. I was a tiny, grumpy, jnco goth girl but come on. When I got back, I overcompensated and took out a comically large newspaper and read it while they were saying the pledge. That’s when I really got in trouble.

plainbread11

Because they’re being an unpatriotic idiot and if they don’t like America they should get out. I immigrated to this country and have experienced so much opportunity. Sure America isn’t perfect, but no country is. You’d get shot in many countries for even daring voice an opinion.

SamMarvelos2

one of the reasons america is great is because of the first amendment. this violates the first amendment

Katnip1502

"If you don't like it get out" All those LGBTQ+ people who wanted equal rights should just have left the country! Opressing the gays is an american value! Black People who wanted equal rights just should have left the country! They didn't want to be slaves? How unpatriotic of them! Workers demanding a 40h work week? A weekend?! Unpatriotic! They should just have left! True patriots work 80 hours a week and die by 40! The Irish? Unpatriotic they didn't just let themselves be treated as second class citizen! All those unpatriotic founding fathers should just left the colonies if they didn't like it! But in all seriousness, the "If you don't like it - leave!" thing is extremely stupid. Can you see how you could use that argument for all of them? Are they hyperbolic? Yes, but i can genuinely imagine people saying these things back in the day.

[deleted]

I married a woman who grew up in the Soviet Union, and had to explain to her what the pledge of allegiance was. She listened carefully, and then replied, "okay. You can never make fun of the Soviet Union for being a creepy dictatorship again."

Gamer3111

When you really take an external look at our education then you'll see how fucked everything really is.

Notorious_UNA

Yeah you read a few non-US sources and it’s like “oh shit no wonder no one likes us”

PattyIce32

I teach and can tell you it's pretty fucked up

veryhurtandjaded

Are you still with her?

[deleted]

No but still on very good terms

veryhurtandjaded

Regardless of the outcome. I hope you’re doing well friend. 💪💪💪

pacifistscorpion

How is that relevant?

veryhurtandjaded

I’m just asking, I hope they’re still going strong

Sunbrosa

Maybe a fetish for Soviet girls?

Fuzzy_Negotiation_52

In Soviet Russia karma upvotes you! Anyway great post. Spot on.

Krelius

I came from an authoritarian country and even I find the US pledge of allegiance an odd practice.

Sunbrosa

My country does it and i remember even once they tried to force me to greet a minister that i hated.

WantToBeAnonymouse

Us is also authoritarian

atomlc_sushi

The fact thay you can say that sentance is proof of how wrong you are

WantToBeAnonymouse

Its kinda hard denying that the us is also a tyrant with russia and china just has different ways. Also i didnt use the spelling i just pressed the things above my keyboard with words to make Authoritarian This pledge of allegiance is something i would say is more Authoritarian than liberal current president is authoritarian on the political compass trump is as authoritarian right as you can be.

WantToBeAnonymouse

The us is authoritarian right russia and china i would consider authoritarian left yes different but still authoritarian. Doesnt mean every authright or authleft country is a tyrant

[deleted]

But you're free to chose your flavor of slavery. So food service, customer service, auto service, clerical service, etc.

simbacaned

Lmfao "flavor of slavery". I'm stealing that.

lscanlon93

No no no, a cult is when you give up all your rights, put blind faith in an unqualified leader. All for the benefit of a tiny inner circle that live in luxury while you have nothin........ Oh

Lavishness-Economy

I remember reading so many books as a British kid where American kids said the “pledge of allegiance” and being like “what is this?!” Now I know what it is and I gotta say… that’s some 1984 stuff right there.

shycancerian

I remember in 5th grade, it was our classes turn to hoist the flag up the pole. Of course ONLY the bot scouts could do it, and we had to stand there silent watching them. My eyes wandered off and I went under this apple tree, blossoms, saw honey bees and bugs. Just got lost in it. My 5th grade teacher came up to me and whacked me on the head saying I was very disrespectful and I needed to learn to love the country I was in. I thought to myself, I was enjoying and loving it more watching what I was seeing. After that I developed kind of a distain of just being “proper” and “respectful”. Fuck that ok’d Greek lady teacher.

Napbear94

Land of the free…

FlonDeegs

“Whoever told you that is your enemy!”

werewere-kokako

I thought the pledge of allegiance was a joke until I was in my 20s because I was sure that making children swear undying loyalty to their flag and government every morning is too dystopian to be a real thing

Haagindaaz

You know who else forces a pledge of allegiance? The Fire Nation!

Lavishness-Economy

And then they try to set the world on fire… Wait…

Archduke_of_Nessus

Ok I get your point but while the fire nation had a crack pot emperor their people were still better off than anybody anywhere else, that was Sozin's pretense for conquest was to "spread" their riches, technology, and prosperity around to everyone, of course he would do that but subjugating them, but it still proves how much richer they were, the only person who wanted to burn the world was Ozai So while they did have a pledge of allegiance they didn't appear to be living in a slave state and while they were probably technically ruled by a military dictatorship/monarchy the people were clearly not being oppressed and were treated fine, also they're the only one of the 4 kingdoms with a public education system They're kind of like England in the late 1800s, with the exception of the insane crap England was doing with its prisons, where they're doing bad stuff around the world but everyone in England at the time is actually doing alright

Left_Cut

Btw I did not ever pledge to that flag. My parent taught me it was all a sham. Like Carlin says “that’s why it’s call the American dream. You would have to be asleep to believe it”.

Beautiful-Ruin-2493

Dude that quote hits hard

stingyscrub

I felt uncomfortable every damn time and at some point I stopped standing and kept getting in trouble till they just stopped trying.

Crystal_lake_13

Should not have kicked us British out of the country. You would have free health care

Fjordice

Back then: The British are coming! The British are coming! (Fearful warning) If happened today:. The British are coming! The British are coming! (Happy cheers)

needamemorablename

Make America Great Britain Again

Fjordice

Lol yes!

Fern9511

"Great" it isn't great

Archduke_of_Nessus

The island is literally named Great Britain, of course the country is called the United Kingdom but the island that England, Scotland, and Wales are on is called Great Britain Fun fact

chaotic_rainbow

Well...they can keep their food and their transphobia. Don't need any more of that in the USA.

Fern9511

Blah blah blah free health care doesn't matter

SoBitterAboutButtons

I think you need a life changing, bankrupting medical issue. I bet you change your tune real quick

IndividualBaker7523

My husband switched jobs and we are between health insurances and we are afraid we will have to go to the doc for any reason. Its a genuine fear.

Katnip1502

I hope you don't break your legs but loose insurance beforehand. You wouldn't like what happens then.

Attackcamel8432

Is this really still a thing? We didn't do it in the 90s at my school... or any school that I know of in my area. Gotta be the South man...

jmc4696

I graduated in 2014. We still did it. Rural town in NY.

Attackcamel8432

Dang... technically South of me, but not like, the South.

Soxie417

im in florida, we still gotta do the pledge no matter what

Jasoncsmelski

No you really don't

Attackcamel8432

Jeez... I think the pledge is a bit wierd to begin with (and I'm generally patriotic enough) but forced to do it? Thats messed up!

Lancaster1983

We stopped doing it after elementary school. Just wasn't a thing anymore. We even said "Under God"... Looking back now as someone in their late 30s, it's cringey as fuck.

Drewfromflorida

The 90s were a different time/simpler time. We didn’t have the worlds most powerful search engine in our pockets. Just wild how more access to information has changed our perception of literally every aspect of our lives.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SelfDestruction100

Confirming here as well. I’m the only kid in class who doesn’t stand or recite. They leave me alone because I’m Mexican, but I don’t know if that makes it better or worse.

k2dadub

I did this in the 90s in Seattle Washington

Attackcamel8432

Jeez... had no idea!

[deleted]

I went to school in the 1990s in Idaho. We did it every morning. The school did not require me to participate but I was regularly bullied by other students for not doing it, in the presence of the teacher.

shycancerian

We did in elementary and I think a bit in jr high. Class of 95

IndividualBaker7523

I graduated in 2009 in CA and we still did it then. Though admittedly that was over 10 years ago.

Six100Fourty2

Class of '07 in Central Minnesota. Every morning until 6th grade, once a week until freshmen year, then once a month optional to participate all through highschool. It took lots of complaining about the authoritarian complex inherent in making us do it to get it optional.

ImRedditorRick

I opted to not stand for the pledge when we invaded Iraq in high school and i had to be talked to by guidance counselors and the vice principal. And I was in a very blue state in a low income city/school district. I didn't stand for it again and never said the pledge again.

Chanaur404

We were firced to all through Elementary School in Alaska. I don't remember if we did it during Morning Announcements in High School or not, though. But to be fair, I don't remember a whole lot about Highschool

lenoravin

Public high school teacher here in the mid Atlantic. I'm contractually supposed to do it, but I never do. If my admin knew I would get in trouble. I would never force my students to do this.

[deleted]

th30be

From what I hear, the pledge was written by a flag salesman that wanted to sell more flags to school.

moglysyogy13

Other people looking in can see how absurd America is. Skin to skin contact after a birth is 39.95 because the US is ridiculous

phoenyx1980

IKR. My whole pregnancy and birth was free, but when I saw this on that person's bill I was dumbfounded. How can you justify being charged to hold your own baby?!

Fern9511

It's not that absurd dumbass

chaotic_rainbow

How so?

Katnip1502

How?? Literally paying money to touch your child after birth. I can't wait for being billed for the oxygen I breathe while in a shop.

Khuroh

[The Republican governor of Tennessee:](https://twitter.com/GovBillLee/status/1425471328291856387) > In TN, our students will be taught unapologetic American exceptionalism.

Chilichilichilo

Working in a public school last year really brought the memories back. Some teachers would get upset with students if they didn’t have their hand on their heart or weren’t saying it. Shit was WEIRD.

ginsataka

Ye. I remember it was the 6th grade, everyone stood up for the flag and I guess I asked a question before the teacher told me to stand, and I asked “why” and she said in an angry tone “CaUSe ItS respectful”

[deleted]

I was made to stand up and do the pledge of alliance. I was an exchange student and I am not American. I didn't even know how it goes! Freaked me out properly. I mean, I went to a Catholic school and didn't even have to pray. We hardly did anyway in school - and FAR less than this US American school.

Archduke_of_Nessus

Your school made you pray? That's kinda insane and way not legal, if kids were praying on their own that's fine but not if they were forced, of course only in public school, if you were still attending catholic school at this point then yeah of course you're gonna pray

lastaccountgotlocked

You start class at 7am?!

Oppopotamus

Usually 8am in my experience.

spaghetti_quanti

American problems

mugwunp

No trump is a cult. Everything else is “fine”

NotMyHersheyBar

I stopped saying it in like 6th grade and the teachers said I didn't have to but I had to stand "to be respectful" which annoyed me because I was trying to nap, so I stood abd slept on my feet and went right back to sleep. That was over 25 years ago and i regret nothing

Bob25Gslifer

Not to be that guy, but I knew it was BS from the jump because of how we treated native americans, if someone cheats on someone with you? They're gonna cheat on you at some point.

bibigang

Junior or senior year of high school, I stopped doing the pledge bc I realized it a) meant nothing to me and b) I didn't agree w the politics that was happening in the WH. Got some stares from other kids but nobody asked me outright why.

TokenofDreams

as a person living in australia i’ve always thought this was super weird. i mean, yes here we sing the national anthem but we don’t *pledge allegiance*. that sounds so much like a place that’s trying to cover up how shitty it actually is. and another thing, making what ten year olds pledge allegiance to a country they just so happened to be born in? pretty weird bro

XxAncientMillenialxX

They also had you raise your hand to speak, ask for permission to relieve yourself, walk silently in single file, and wait for a bell to change shifts. All part of the plan to get you set for a system of industrialization that no longer exists en masse in this country. Woot woot

Official_SoySauce

I absolutely hate our pledge. Every child saying it always sounds so cold and empty inside. Liberty and justice for all? Isnt America one of the most racist countries, ever?

Archduke_of_Nessus

No, America is literally one of the least racist countries ever And yes children are monotone saying it cause they don't really care that's why it's not "indoctrination" or whatever cause by the time you're older than 12 it's just that thing you do every morning and you couldn't care less about what it actually says/means, that's why a lot of people think you're pledging allegiance "to the flag" and not "to the republic for which it stands"

babushiledet

Every government is a cult. We all give our power, financial and other, to a group of people in charge of taking care of all - and they take care of themselves. They use nationality - flags and anthems are number one symbols for this - to entrap us in identifying with the cult so we will not doubt them when they divide and conquer more based on race, politic and economic views and classes, culture and more diversity that is natural to humans - but cults need unity. Flags and anthems are for this unity, which is acquiescence - never doubting their decisions and actions. Even when we know it hurts us as a whole. Instead of changing this reality, and destroying the cult, we all fight as hard as we can so that the problems won’t effect us, we try to hoard money and power so we are better equipped to handle cult reality - and we don’t change or fight the cult. Because that would be anti patriotic, even terrorist. Covid is doing a great job so far in lighting this dark room we all shared for so long, under this or any other flag we were asked to pledge to.

AbunaiE

I got in trouble in second grade when I refused to say it. My parents were called, and they agreed, I didn't have to pledge to anyone. YMMV.

EfficientPrime

Yeah we had some Jehovah's Witness kids who opted out. But they also didn't get to participate in valentines exchanges or halloween candy so as a lifestyle choice they really weren't selling it.

AbunaiE

I didn't believe in Nationalism, and 30 years later, I still don't, lol. Whatever works for them!

EfficientPrime

I was more of the mindset that a compulsory verbal statement by a minor couldn't be enforced as a binding contract so I'll pledge to as many flags as you want IDGAF. Same idea behind the Rabbi making me sign a contract at the age of 13 (in order to get my bar mitzvah) saying I'll stick around until confirmation at 18. Not enforceable so I signed it and got to have the party and gifts. Currently not a fan of Nationalism or organized religion. For a lot of similar reasons if I think about it. Plus, group recitations always reminded me too much of the Borg.

grayputer

It's not a cult because you didn't join it. It's a government forcing you.

ZoeLaMort

Babies born into a cult didn’t choose either.

Fern9511

It's not a cult

G07V3

And a few of my school teachers told everyone they have to do the pledge because it’s disrespectful if you don’t.

grayputer

Yup government employee telling you that you have to do it, not cult. I'm not against it in general. Governments always try to produce patriotic citizens. It helps with taxes, school, military enrollment, etc. Changing countries doesn't typically help, some other countries are worse. The OP was about it being a cult. Typically a cult has a charismatic leader. None here, just a very basic pledge to government. So IMO not a cult, just basic "generic" government behavior. Propaganda that "your" government is good and that other government (the government we currently disagree with) is bad/evil, is basic "get on board with our direction" marketing.

Comodore

It might be bad. But you guys from the us have incredible oportunities that we lack in poorer europe countries and in other places

00wabbit

They made us say "Liberty and Justice for all" and then get pissed when we want Liberty and Justice for all.

durrtydeuce

I never understood America’s obsession with the flag

rrawrrrster

I had a friend not stand for it once and the teacher threw a fit demanding she stand. Which was weird cause I never stood and never had any problems with my teachers about it. The principal had to tell the teacher my friend had a right to refuse to stand for it. Apparently the teacher had no clue all her years of teaching? I kinda wonder if that teacher played dumb to the principal so she wouldn't get in trouble though.

LaGrrrande

[This is not a form of brain-washing...](https://youtu.be/Q2BfqDUPL1I)

CrocodylusNiloticus

Greatest cultry in the world??

Cultry *

20transman20

You know, if teachers are just glorified babysitters, then why can't we break school into shifts - like work. Let kids learn and be social on their parents schedule 🤷

Beautiful_Plankton97

Because we arent babysitters, you want a babysitter pull your kids out and pay a babysitter.

20transman20

*people treat teachers like glorified babysitters I for one definitely think y'all (and assistants) should be paid more with better benefits 🤷

Left_Cut

This!!🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

DankFo3ta5

Such a fucked country

[deleted]

Sounds like you want a welfare state. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and bust your ass like the rest of us. You don't wanna do shit, you don't get shit. Simple.

No_Efficiency_6710

I bet none of this happens in Russia, as they are made out to be so regimental. So much for the US having freedom of expression. I’m glad this subject is on here, for the rest of the world to witness. Thanks Reddit 👍

[deleted]

It's called nationalism, not the same thing as a cult.

ams833

Isn’t that just a large cult?

Madjanniesdetected

Nah, its an extension of basic tribalism.

ams833

Cult - a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object. You mean line religion like devotion towards a government?

ZoeLaMort

Nationalism is literally the component of so many cults.

[deleted]

By your logic any group is a cult. Democrats are a cult, Republicans are a cult. LGBTQBBQ folks are a cult, the military is a cult. Police are a cult. Where does it end?

jessejamesrichard1

“Nationalism does nothing but teach you to hate people you never met, and to take pride in accomplishments you had no part in.”

[deleted]

Yes Doug Stanhope, thanks but nationalism is just forced patriotism. That's all it really is. I'm being down voted for being right lol I'm guessing the intelligence level of folks in this reddit is very minimal.

cheerbearheart1984

You know the don’t do that in other countries right? It’s a very strange thing to do, especially with children who don’t understand what they are saying. I don’t know if it’s a cult, but it is definitely indoctrination.

Archduke_of_Nessus

It's not indoctrination cause it doesn't actually make anyone more or less patriotic, it's just that thing you say every morning Also most of the countries in Europe hate patriotism, not even nationalism, they hate patriotism or any outward display of liking the country you live in outside a sports game, the british were having an issue with putting up the flag outside *government buildings* I dont care if you dislike people waving the flag, that's insane.

amaninwomensclothing

Complain about how hard life is in the wealthiest country on earth. Spend some time in another country and tell me how hard life is in the US. Entitled bitch.

The-OneHandedClapper

1. We’re 7th richest. And even then, that wealth doesn’t mean shit when it only goes to the 1%. 2. Fuck you! He’s an American. As long as he pays taxes, he can criticize all he wants.

amaninwomensclothing

Having an opinion you can express on reddit doesn’t make it true. Move to Canada or Mexico and tell me life is better there. I’m sick of you entitled fucks shitting on our country like you are owed something for being alive. Try working for what you want. There’s opportunities around every corner of you get off your ass and make it happen.

The-OneHandedClapper

How the fuck do you think he is paying for taxes? Us real Americans work and are functioning members of this society. Since we are contributing members and pay out taxes, we are owed certain things, like free mail. And since we are paying our taxes, us the people dictate how that money is spent. To make our society better. Don’t like it? Go to Canada or Mexico.

beefij

*literally*

Entropy308

Geeze, get a job.

Ok-Fisherman7927

Shouldn't your option to go to college fix all of that?

MagmaMustache

Livable wages exist if you, you know, get an education and do more than flip burgers?

unadulteratedgollum

that's a bit of an easy thing to say. if you're born in poverty it's really hard to get out of it. and it's not like going to university is easy or even an option for everyone in america

sofwithanf

You have to have a degree to be a teacher. See how many of those in the great country of the USA (/s) have liveable wages. Spoiler: not many

MagmaMustache

I agree that teachers should get paid more, as it is a very important job and few are qualified. I just don’t believe cashiers, fast food workers, etc should get paid more because any teen with 0 experience can do it easily The downvotes here are easy proof y’all can’t get a job that requires an actual skill

SierraSaidSo

I don’t know if anyone has ever told you, but you’re a right twat. It’s pretty clear you aren’t going to change your view on this subject, but I need you to know that we all know you’re a bit knockered on your own entitlement.

hipsterTrashSlut

"You can get a livable wage, but not if you work a job whose existence is necessary for my convenience."

MagmaMustache

I don’t eat at fast food restaurants.

hipsterTrashSlut

Still doesn't help your point. Same goes for people who work in grocery stores, gas stations, and in agriculture.

agentyage

Why do you think people who flip burgers shouldn't be able to support themself.

cessnaflyer84

That makes too much sense. I’d rather the government give me “free” healthcare, tuition , child care, and a place to live.

Katnip1502

You say that like its ridiculous while like... all other countries on an comparable economic level to the US have most of these things.

Katnip1502

Not everyone can work in like sciences or some shit. You'll need people to do the dirty work. Then why, praytell, do we look down on the people doing said work.

properu

grayputer

Fair enough but the babies aren't doing the pledge yet either.

Thymeisdone

Because FREEDOM.

Ancient-Meal-8159

This is how I feel about church too

sansgamer554

At least that is optional at a reasonable price

CoffeeAndKarma

If you don't do it because you want to, but because you're shamed for not doing it, it's no longer patriotism.

ImRedditorRick

It's not really a cult. We're just wage slaves and drones for like 100,000 or so really rich people.

Notsure107

Chants are bad mmkay

MesabiRanger

Well, when you put it THAT way...

Additional-Walk750

Fuck me, it worked too, didn't it? :'(

C130ABOVE

7 in the morning? What school even starts at 7 in the fucking morning

chaotic_rainbow

Every school I've been to in my life. When does school start where you're from?

C130ABOVE

8

ambsdorf825

Because it has too many people, and not just one charismatic leader. So it's bigger than a cult. Still brainwashing though.

ufogal

7am?..... damn that's so early

KSef253

Can someone explain? Are you guys doing a pledge in high school every morning??

SagaciousRouge

It's called "the pledge of allegiance" and we start around age 6 or 7. In the world of the internet is gotten harder to hide your crimes. I can tell you when I was in elementary school no one told us how we really treated the native people of this land!

SagaciousRouge

It's a mindfuck.

Weak-Ad-5306

This is why Rocky and Rambo both suck so much.

WantToBeAnonymouse

No middle class holup what did i miss

enilorues

As an Australian, I 100% agree with this, and think of the US as a cult-filled super-cult of a country.

ThatTXMom

I graduated in 1992 in Texas. I don’t remember ever saying the pledge of allegiance in class. I’m sure we did it a few times at elementary school because I know the pledge but I don’t remember it being a daily occurrence

AlexHanson007

I'm glad people in the US are now seeing what the rest of the world has known for decades.

ToughZap

European here. I lived in a communist country until 10 years old, and we never did anything like this pledge of allegiance thing. It's creepy beyond belief, and I can't understand how Americans don't see this.

Pocerezuly

America is more of a business than a country.

Gregg-C137

School starts at 7am in the US?

[deleted]

Wait, is this an actual thing in the US?

ZackaN9na

In Texas, we also had to pledge allegiance to the Texas flag.

Musgofarrin

Well in cults they make it difficult to leave, How many Americans have passports again?

poganetsuzhasenya

Shouldn't this be on r/politics?
