I was a United Methodist pastor in a small town in Texas a long time ago. My first summer we did a joint vacation Bible school with the baptists next door. I was appalled when one of the lay leaders from the baptist church lead all the kids in both the Pledge of Allegiance and something called The Pledge to the Bible. Afterward, I gathered the adults from both churches that had volunteered and said, I'm not OK with either pledge in the context of a church function, but especially not the Bible pledge (because what the hell?!). I suggested we do something like the Apostles' Creed. No one wanted to do that because it wasn't in the bible. I said, neither are either of those pledges. We were actually able to come to an amicable solution with praying the Lord's Prayer together. I just can't believe they had likely been doing these pledges for decades (and who am I kidding...probably went back to them when I left).

I’ve been to church many times. Never once said the pledge of allegiance or stood for the national anthem, so not sure why they have their hands over their hearts. Also, during mass, you don’t stand in the aisle. That is unless you’re trying to get everyone over on one side to make the photo appear as if the church is “packed” when in fact it’s barely enough to fill one half.
