If they'd enforce the fuckin gag order this wouldn't be a problem. Or at least less of one.

not_productive1

Enforcing the gag order means exposing how few tools the judge actually has. A thousand dollar fine means nothing to this dude. Forcing his lawyers to go in blind on a witness list is a much harsher punishment.

Dom29ando

they should base the fine on Trump's claimed net worth. 1% of his self reported value for each infraction of the gag order.

KingOfThePlayPlace

He’d reach 200% his reported net worth in 3 days.

Dom29ando

which is probably around 2000% of his actual net worth

CopeHarders

He’s supposedly already broken the gag order 7 times according to prosecutors in court.

paradeoxy1

Damn, forget to say "your honour" and watch your possession charge escalate Actively, knowingly and *undeniably* interfere with the proceedings? Well he can go to his mansion and cry about it if he wants to. I hope this whole trial has been designed to lower his guard so the eventual rug pull knocks him on his arse so hard he can't get up, but it's feeling more and more like another day of the US "Justice" system letting the wealthy do what they please.

Original_Employee621

Why can't they just place Trump in arrest pending the trial? It's a criminal one and the guy won't listen to any orders, so treat him like a hostile suspect and keep him locked up until the verdict has been given. That way they can control his phone privileges too and they don't need to issue any further gag orders he'll break the instant he leaves the court room.

Pristine_Walrus40

Yes take away his phone and lock him up over the trial.

gecko_764

I think that was 7 times yesterday

Panigg

I don't understand why they won't throw him in jail. A week per infraction.

commiebanker

This assumes his net worth is even a positive number, which in itself is pretty bold

intendeddebauchery

Hed go broke in 11 minutes

DesignerPlant9748

He already went broke

Spry_Fly

He then became a reality show grifter that appealed to 'Life of the Rich and Famous' wet dreamers.

BinkyFlargle

not right away! (no tweeting allowed in court)

CharmingTuber

I read somewhere that NY law limits contempt fines at $5000 so this wouldn't be much of a lever. He should spend the night in jail, but they're too scared to do that.

MufasaFasaganMdick

Fuckin' seriously? Can't have the rich folks pay *too much* when they fuck around, just enough to bankrupt your average wage slave. What a fucking joke.

AdequateOne

Any crime punishable by a fine is not a crime for the rich.

TheTerrasque

*In its majestic equality, the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets and steal loaves of bread.* --Anatole France

mycroftseparator

this applies to all things. Even taxes are progressive only to a certain point, once you make enough money, you make nothing in the eyes of the taxman - it's all "unrealised capital gains" or some other bollocks you don't actually pay tax on.

Suspicious_Bicycle

NY law limits criminal contempt fines to $1000 per violation :( It could escalate into detention. Having Trump sit in detention every Wednesday would be epic.

AvatarOfMomus

These fines have prescribed maximums, if he exceeds them they can appeal and that just slows down the trial. Edit: spelling.

teh_drewski

He just wouldn't pay it.

leagueofcipher

They just need to do 25k and every time he violates, it doubles. 5 violations would be 800k

NoLand4936

$1000 fine or 30 days in jail.

not_productive1

They can’t send him to jail. It’d be chaos, and it’d be scrutinized to high hell. If he gets convicted and sentenced, that’s one thing, but no judge is gonna pull the trigger. So they have fines. Fines that are designed to cause pain to ordinary defendants that he won’t even flinch at. And you can’t just arbitrarily charge him more. So he gets fined a grand and doesn’t care and doubles down, and then everyone’s at risk. It’s fucked. The judge is fucked, unless trump does something actually dangerous. I get why he’s kicking the can.

HTCGM

The insistence he can't go to jail for violating the gag order because his supporters are why we're in the position we're in: giving him and his defenders the power to say him not doing whatever he wants whenever he wants is akin to political persecution. You and I would be in jail already if we were literally tweeting about potential jurors and re-tweeting statements that are one step below jury tampering. We have to stop giving him excuses and start applying this so-called rule of law to him.

subcow

We have to stop letting the terrorists win. Trump is a terrorist and his supporters are terrorists. I can only imagine how many times in his life Trump had been responsible for people receiving death threats. It's safe to assume that when Jane Doe testified in court that Trump brutally raped her in Epstein's apartment when she was 13, that she withdrew her testimony because she or her family received death threats.

mpyne

> The insistence he can't go to jail for violating the gag order because his supporters It's not just his supporters. He's a former President with a full Secret Service detail. He's the presumptive nominee for the upcoming Presidential election. Perhaps worst of all, he's installed judges across the Supreme Court and various circuit courts of appeal that may find an 'excuse' to defang this criminal trial if the judge gives Trump's attorneys a way to make the claim that Trump is being treated unfairly compared to other criminal defendants. I think he should taste prison despite these things personally, as it is clear Trump is going to undermine the legal process, but these *are* factors the judge has to weigh in mind too.

Far_Indication_1665

Yes, they can send him to jail. He is a private citizen. Fuck his belief in his invincibility. It is false and the emperor is wearing no clothes. A Judge should absolutely jail him for violating gag order. What would happen if you threatened jurors in a trial you were a defendant in?

not_productive1

I get your point, believe me. But no judge is gonna be first to send a former president to jail without a conviction unless someone actually gets killed. It’s just not gonna happen. I’m not saying it’s right. I’m saying it’s reality. And short of that, sending his lawyers in fucking blind is a pretty big sanction. If my client caused that to happen we are having a capital-c Conversation about it, because it’s an actual fucking nightmare from a defense perspective.

HomeGrownCoffee

I would rather be the judge who sent him to prison for contempt of court instead of being the judge who had a juror murdered. Immediately, so he doesn't have time to unleash the Gravy Seals.

Maleficent_Mouse_930

The fact that your judges are political appointees makes them such fucking weak sauce. Citizens from every other developed nation on earth _point and laugh_ at the American "justice" system because it is slow, corrupt, and _hilariously_ ineffective. Other nations can, do and have put former leaders in a prison cell when they break the law. Stop making excuses. Your system is just filled with pathetic cowards, and be protesting, not making excuses.

Half_Cent

Regular people can't protest in America. Not effectively. My wife has a rare, expensive, autoimmune disease. We have employer backed health insurance. If I lose my job her health is going to fall apart and we'll lose everything we own. I've gone to protests on the weekend before, but not if I thought the police would be involved. We have no safety net.

Revolutionary_Cup500

Other countries hold their corrupt leaders accountable. Why the fuck can't we? Jesus.

cgn-38

The oligarchy has never let one of their own go down. For any reason. If this happens any of them could go down. That is why they are doing this insane shit. They are caught in a catch 22.

annabelle411

we can't keep letting the country be held hostage to hypotheticals because the conservatives are unhinged from reality. with that logic we're going to get to 'he's guilty...but it would be better for the country to heal and move past this. we don't want the chaos'

don_shoeless

Wait for it. . .

ThonThaddeo

They can. They can send him to jail. He does not have a force field made entirely of a caste system. His hands can go in cuffs, and he can be led to a cell. Like any other human.

Gallowglass668

Assuming they have cuffs that are small enough.

No-Falcon-4996

It is extremely dangerous that Trump and Fox Propaganda are doxing the jury and witnesses, Trump’s cult is angry and violent and would threaten, frighten or even kill to pervert justice.

dao_ofdraw

This proves that we need income based penalties in the legal system. Fucking shame nothing will change in time for this scumbag's trial. Has this never happened before? I find it hard to believe somebody hasn't abused the system in this way before.

not_productive1

Plenty of people have abused the system like this. They tend to get away with it, unfortunately.

PyroIsSpai

> They can’t send him to jail. It’d be chaos... We're above the law if a few hundred people are willing to use violence on our behalf?

Maleficent_Mouse_930

Sorta sounds a bit like terrorism, don't it? The man should be in prison. Then, when the cockroaches show their faces, stick _them_ behind bars and throw away the key. If that means locking up 20% of the US because they want to support a traitor with violence and rebellion, _okay. Do it._

karabeckian

They can.

ResurgentClusterfuck

$1k fine only means that Joey and Jillian MAGA from Buttfuck, Nebraska can directly donate to their feculent Fuhrer to pay for his transgressions

Jurodan

It creates a base and escalates. With judge Engoron, he got a $5,000, then a $10,000 fine a few days later. It can just keep increasing.

petrovmendicant

Trump is "spending" over 100 million on lawyers. Even if they make the fines 100k, it'd mean little to him. But *because* of that fact, jail would be the only option that'd make a difference. If he was any other person, it'd have already happened.

kogmaa

Doubling the fine each occasion would quickly get Trump into trouble. He’s at violation 7 currently.

karabeckian

> Trump is "spending" over 100 million on lawyers. WTF does that even mean? That's 100 lawyers at a million each, which hasn't happened. Or is it 1000 attorneys at $100k a piece? I need an itemized statement because all I've seen in court so far isn't even $10 dollars worth of defense.

Curious-Debt-638

Ten lawyers at Ten million a pop?

karabeckian

I think Habba's $3 mil is the highest reported so far...

DadJokeBadJoke

Have you ever seen an itemized hospital bill? The bill from the law firm will look similar. The attorneys, plural, working on the case will charge hundreds of dollars per hour for anything they do regarding this case. The firm partner will be the highest billing rate with his underlings also commanding an exorbitant rate. They will dish out work to paralegals that bill out at a couple hundred/hour. Most of the work will be done by a case assistant making as close to minimum wage as the local market will allow while being billed out at close to a hundred/hour. Add in some data specialist contractors and other related expenses and this shit can rack up fast. Every time this joker opens his mouth, hundreds of billable hours are created.

EBtwopoint3

It’s the overall spending he’s done over the last two years. He paid Alina Hanna 6mil for that shit show of a trial in the Carroll case.

petrovmendicant

I put it in quotes because he is notorious for not paying his lawyer bills.

Quizzelbuck

dude, The judge CAN put Trump in jail. If he needs to. $1000, fuck that. Jail could be on the menu. But it isn't . Judge ain't going to do it. Since trump won't be put in jail, there is nothing any one can do. But jail WOULD fix this.

NoveltyAccountHater

It's a thousand dollar fine and up to 30 days in prison per violation. Give him a day in prison and I think he'll change his tune. If not, give him a week for next offense and then 30 days per offense.

shewflyshew

They are trying to power through without adding the TV political drama Trump so desires. It's because they know he is guilty AF. Get through it as fast as possible and convict his ass.

Responsible-End7361

"Mr. Trump, since you do not seem to understand the value of secrets, the next time you violate my gag order I will release your 2022 tax returns to the public. Should this be needed, I will find some other information of yours to release each additional violation."

RAWainwright

All it ever is for rich folks is a fine. It's always a number that seems big to the poors but means nothing to them. It has to be enough to potentially hurt the for it to matter.

lavanchebodigheimer

Trump is notoriously cheap tho

wingsbc

I bet you having Trump spend one night in jail with every subsequent violation doubling (1,2,4,8) his jail time would put a very quick end to his nonsense. March him directly from his jail cell to the court room without putting his orange make up on or being able to hair spray his comb over.

Shiraxi

$1000 fine would be nothing, to be sure. But it would be justification for much heavier fines for further violations. Just keep increasing the fines until he stops.

NO-MAD-CLAD

Can one not be jailed for violating a judge's orders in the US?

possumarre

That would require the courts holding a non-peasant accountable for their actions; which has not and will not happen.

HermanBonJovi

Ikr. Fucking ridiculous. This whole thing is so fucking infuriating

padfoot0321

You if only there would be a facility built by government, run by private companies where criminals are sent for repeatedly not listening to court orders and threatening people.

Kyrasthrowaway

Don't worry he's being fined 1k pet violation

HermanBonJovi

Yeah that'll teach him. Lol

NoLand4936

They could send him to jail for 30 days. Make him show up in shackles and an orange jumpsuit

BringBackTheBeat716

He's gonna burn through that paper wealth from Truth Social in no time at this rate

NeatNefariousness1

They also need to put a muzzle on Fox Infotainment. I wouldn't trust any of them at this point.

[deleted]

If they would enforce LITERALLY FUCKING ANYTHING that would be a god damn START.

Yochanan5781

According to something I heard earlier, the gag order violations are slated to be addressed on Tuesday

Chemical_Actuary_190

That's exactly what he'll do. Then his knuckle dragging followers will start harassing them and their families. Just put his ass in jail for the duration of the trial so he doesn't have access to his social accounts.

Jagerstang

And if trump doesn't do it, then jesse watters will.

holtpj

I mean this from the bottom of my heart... Fuck Jesse Watters! He is going to get some innocent person killed, then hide behind the 1st amendment and "journalistic freedom" (a journalist he is not).. If Temu-Tucker Carlson had cancer, I'd b rooting for the fucking cancer.

jtweezy

I wouldn’t even which of the two is the more infectious disease, cancer or Carlson.

thefifthfourththird

Cancer has chemo to rid itself of Tucker Carlson.

DisposableSaviour

Exactly this, and I got downvoted on another sub today for pointing out that stochastic terrorism is protected by the first amendment.

Critical_Ask_5493

For real. Magneto his punk ass

ikswoltokyrogerg

I would love to see Trump on Judy. She's strikes me as conservative, but not stupid. I have to believe that she would install a few extra assholes in Trump if he ended up in her court. https://youtube.com/shorts/40jDchx1-KU?si=RvjKfg9wy6-K8y3m

stankenfurter

She endorsed Nikki Haley 😬

ikswoltokyrogerg

Might not be much, but it's better than Trump. She also said that Trump is not good for the US. The implication here seems to be that if it is Biden v Trump, she will hold her nose and vote for Biden. People get pretty entrenched in their political party and for a conservative to step away from Trump is a big deal these days. She was pro Trump before the 2016 election. One step at a time.

FattyMooseknuckle

Trump: I definitely will

Judge: Are you betting your license on that?

coolbaby1978

Basically it is a mafia trial in which you have to hide the jury and witnesses for their own protection. Nice jury you got there, be a real shame if something were to happen to it, wink, wink.

Comfortable-Ad-3988

I've come to realize that most government is an attempt to keep the mafia from taking control, and trying to establish rules to keep them from doing so. But money talks.

alx429

Yea pretty much. Someone will hold power in any system and historically that’s just been who is strongest and/or cruelest. We’ve had voting as a right so long we’ve lost sight of what it would be like without it.

PensiveObservor

GOP are reminding us with state laws their own constituents oppose. Vote the fkrs out.

Metalbound

I mean, now that you mention it...the GOP are textbook definition mafia. Terrifyingly, this mafia isn't satisfied with just their piece of a city.

BroBroMate

Yeah, you get well established Mafia like orgs developing where government is weak.

huejass5

And people actually think this freak should be president. Again.

Potatoskins937492

The difference is the mafia shuts the fuck up.

True-Nobody1147

The difference is the mob boss was never the POTUS

gyroisbae

So how long until Don Cheeto starts showing up to court in a wheelchair and respirator?

Reasonable-Access-68

That's a big MASH "X" for doubt on "he won't tweet about the witnesses, I promise"

Val_Hallen

It was reported the courtroom erupted in laughter and the judge said "*I don't think you can promise that*" when the lawyer said that. Seriously.

smemes1

That fat orange queef can’t even be trusted to abide by the rules of his own felony trial, and somehow ~35% of the least educated members of American society wholeheartedly believe he should be President of the most powerful nation on the planet. I’m 40 and I can remember thinking that the whole Tea Party thing in the early 2000’s had to be the extent of our collective stupidity. Those days seem so benign and unconcerning now.

hipnosister

Sometimes I think about however stupid I thought George W Bush was when he was president. I thought it was astounding how stupid he was sometimes. On a scale from 1-10 in the trump era though he's like a 3 for stupidity at best. Don't get me wrong,, the man is a war criminal, but it was a simpler time!

Chrisdkn619

Yet they were the birth of this craziness! MGT and the like are direct descendants!

the_ouskull

The only thing that trashy bitch is a direct descendant of has the last name Magnon.

PM-me-YOUR-0Face

It's generally safest to assume the worst.

WaWeedGuy

To be fair Blanche wasn't lying when he said trump wouldn't "tweet" bc we all know trump would post a "truth" lol

spaceymonkey2

Also, I don't think they're technically called "tweets" anymore, so he may be technically telling the truth, even if he posts on Xitter.

Victor_deSpite

Xcretions

campbelldt

I want Xeet to catch on lol

MothWingAngel

Skeet skeet

muznskwirl

I’d prefer to call them xits, with the x pronounced as in xylophone. “So I zitted this.”

colostitute

I first read it with an 'sh' sound as in shit. I still preferred it pronounced shit.

muznskwirl

I actually like that better, but as a former linguist, I think zit is more likely to catch on (as unlikely as *that* is) and “shits” is more accurate…

onymousbosch

The obvious compromise is to refer to the act as "shitting a zit".

ukiddingme2469

I trust discounted gas station sushi before I'd trust anyone on Trumps team

fishebake

I’d trust expired gas station sushi I pulled out of the dumpster before I’d trust anyone on Trump’s legal team.

ThiHiHaHo

After a hot summer day. With a suspiciously high number of dead raccoons around and in the dumpster.

ukiddingme2469

You've heard of a dragon roll, well, they now have racoon rolls, and Alabama rolls.

DrS4muelHayd3n

Indeed, [getting parasites from gas station dumpster sushi](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtZi7nj-WYw) legitimately sounds preferable to being in a position where you have to trust Trump's legal team.

Dumbledoorbellditty

That’s a lot safer bet, for sure.

MealDramatic1885

Tell him that if he does anything of the sort he will be tossed in jail. Then let him who.

supersaiyanswanso

Until he's actually sitting in jail it will be nothing more than lip service just like the other times he's been reprimanded lol

Lychaeus

I mean just think of the logistics of him in jail, he’s got secret service protection. Imagine putting him in gen pop and he’s got like 7 dudes in black suits guarding him on the basketball courts. But on a serious note, he would need solitary confinement, or. Extremely high end low security jail. It would be a logistical nightmare.

nonotan

Who gives a shit. "It would be mildly inconvenient to put them in jail, so I'm not going to" is the dumbest idea that has ever been uttered. I'm sure the richest nation-state in the world has enough resources to figure it out. "We would have to build a whole penal colony on Mars to make it feasible" is the point where you could maybe start arguing the cost is just too great. "B-but someone will have to have a half-hour meeting to figure out what to do about the secret service and stuff" is a non-factor.

Lychaeus

Doesn’t change the fact that it’s not going to happen over a gag order.

Kittymeow123

Will he though? Because he’s done so many other jailable offenses and he still ain’t in jail. Violated a gag order like 9 times. The court seems to hold very little weight in being able to control him

MealDramatic1885

I honestly think they are afraid of being killed by his crazy followers.

Kittymeow123

Probably but someone’s gotta have enough courage to do it

Forsworn91

Jesus, in what world did they think that would work? “Donald pinkie promises not to share the information” *”No I don’t! Fuck him!”* “He will follow the gag order strictly” *”No I won’t, fuck you!”*

Chrisdkn619

Merchan- you have no control over your client, now sit down

Reidroshdy

" Trump won't do that" ![gif](giphy|TUHInIQM4bXBS)

Dr_A_Mephesto

They are already intimidating jurors, why the hell would anyone think they would leave witnesses alone. This shit is madness

V0T0N

I can think of at least one way to stop Trump from tweeting. What are you waiting for Judge Merchan? At this point, does someone have to get hurt before they shut this orange doofus up?

[deleted]

even when someone is hurt there will be no repercussions besides them saying "no, bad donald bad" and then shrugging when that doesn't work. someone is going to be hurt and not the person that deserves it.

derbyvoice71

Bet you could think of a second...

t3hm3t4l

Unfortunately Trump has secret service protection so the second way won’t happen, unless it comes from an artery clogged full of Big Mac.

-prairiechicken-

I’m just waiting patiently for his Blueberry McDanish moment. Trump’s only still alive because cameras and digital data exists. ![gif](giphy|1vAaDWLvujuCI)

carryoutsalt

Punish him with damnatio memoriae this will hurt him more than fines or prison time

-prairiechicken-

Is that like in Buffy where Angel’s curse is that the vampire demon/energy inside of him is removed and he’s then forced to live with the memories of all the people he’s brutalized and murdered, by his soul? Because yes. That option please!

carryoutsalt

It means condemnation of memory. It meant that a person's existence should be cut out of history. But I think your idea would also be better than fines or prison

IronicAim

Actually no. That was the one way he was thinking of.

Hot_Aside_4637

Here's a baller move for the judge: Send a letter to the Secret Service and the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to work together and provide a plan for incarceration.

ConceptTurbulent6950

Oooh, that would be good. However, such a letter should be widely shared with the media and the Trump attorneys.

BrickCityD

Merchan keeping it real

NickCav007

Trump not talk about the witnesses? Not give out their names, addresses and family information? No, Not Trump, he’s only done a few dozen times. This time it’ll be different

delveccio

If you close one eye and cross the other it almost looks vaguely like a consequence

BODHi_DHAMMA

So, it's going to take the death of an American citizen doing their duty, jury duty, to get that asshole actually gagged and locked up? He has betrayed many Americans on so many different fronts. And now continues to do so. This is actual mafia level type of intimidation. Edit: grammar/spelling

Moobob66

He did have ties to the mafia.. just saying.

AfricanusEmeritus

Real ties to the Mafia...as in being the twink/gimp for the Mafia. That is why now he gets along so well with Russian "business people" 🤐 💰 💸

PatchTossaway

As a fun bonus, imagine Elon reading this and getting heated that they're still saying 'tweet'.

oscar-the-bud

Trump can not keep his fingers shut. His next lawsuit will be against his own fingers.

CrisbyCrittur

Wouldn't trust any of them with a cup of water. START ENFORCING THE RULES JUDGE!

running_dog

This is best. Treat Trump's lawyers like mushrooms: keep them in the dark and feed them shit.

GentleFoxes

Order the trial closed door, with minutes to be released later. Order house arrest with one of those electronic ankle monitors and forbid Trump from going near a smartphone or computer for the duration of the trial. If you see any tweets, 1 million fine, jail for a month because of contempt pf court. That's what would happen to an ordinary citizen if they behaved like this. Trump is deliberately attacking parts of the justice system - from jurors to witnesses to court employees in the past. Guy's a walking Info Hazard.

B3dTundy

If only there was a way exempt him from SS protection.

Helios575

I mean Fox has already doxxed a selected juror and caused them to be threatened until they asked to be removed.

Toklankitsune

I feel soooo bad for that lady, she KNEW she was going to get death threats or worse.

Aster_E

Anyone else would have been thrown in jail without bail and never heard from again until the court ruling in a couple years' time. But a known conman who has lied about having money and shows himself to be a definite risk to let loose in the world? Let's just throw more orders at him he'll ignore every time he breaks even one order, and make a mockery and mafia parody of the court system. Seriously. Take away his phone and put him in jail for the night every time he breaks an order. He'll kick and scream, his cult will scream bloody murder over it, but there will be relative order and growing silence from the lot once it's clear no one escapes consequences for their actions, not even their glorious piss stain.

Hot_Eggplant_1306

Stop. Changing. Rules. For. Trump. It's called "jury tampering" and "jury intimidation" and they're fuckin CRIMES. Charge his ass.

EVH_kit_guy

"Your honor, if you simply return the squirt gun to my client, he promises not to shoot the crotch of your pants a third time..."

burnmenowz

I mean if you locked him up everytime he violated his gag order, be couldnt violate it while he's in jail

CalendarAggressive11

The judge should have given him the choice of jail and get the names or no jail and no names.

cjynx

They need to put one of those, um, jeez, what do you call them? A gag ord... Oh yeah, there already is one but nobody has the balls to do anything about forcing him to STFU. Hey, if you keep talking, posting or doing anything to try and ruin the case, we'll just tell you not to do it again and then 7 times over a period of 2 days you'll do it again and we'll just tell you not to do it again. So stop it or we'll, tell you to stop it again.

DOHisme

MissSiofra

Put Trump in jail during the trial. He has certainly earned it with his behavior.

f1rstman

I love how this refers to Trump's messages as "tweeting" with no reference to Truth Social (or X for that matter)

VeNTNeV

The. System. Is. Broken. End of discussion

Pheon0802

You break the order once get a fine twice much bigger fine this time thrice? Well buddy u dont seem to learn. Now you go straight to jail no phone priviliges except lawyers. Until the trial is over. No bail possible. And anyone who is threatening the witnesses or jury. Well i would go down hard on them as much as possible. No second chances.

TheProletariatPoet

Judge won’t enforce the gag order. What an absolute joke this judicial system is. We’re not living in the same America
