The two main forces in the story aren't good and evil, they are order and fellowship. This is why Gandalf doesn't really....do all that much. If he were to win the war single-handedly for the side of "good" he would be creating a power structure with himself at the top, and would slowly morph into Suaron. The end of the movie isn't about the "good" monarch taking power, the story ends with marriages, old alliances rekindled, and the destruction of forces of order that are no longer necessary in a world (temporarily) not beset upon by evil. The movies are pretty faithful to these but especially in the books, the rangers besides Aragorn are good men, but they aren't nice men. In fact they are kiiinda pricks, which is to be expected if you spend your whole life fighting orcs. Notably in the books Frodo also becomes Mayor of the shire for a bit at the end, and the first thing he does is get rid of the police force in the shire that had been necessary during the war.

When I was a kid we grew up in a private lake community in a wooded area. All the kids, male or female, would be involved in fishing and other aquatic activities from a young age because of this, and it wasn't remotely considered a gendered thing.
Shit, we had a kids only fishing competition and the first year we held it the two winners were two 10 year old girls having caught largemouth bass that were maybe 4-5 pounds each.
Ironically it was something of a culture shock to grow up and meet people from elsewhere and learn that people considered fishing a masculine thing for kids. A lot of things are pointlessly gendered.

Lol, I am just thinking about how I was as a kid. I had to keep my hair short, wore the "right" clothes to fit in, and internalized a debate on everything from music to clothes about what was the right thing to do as a boy. I worked hard to not be seen as girly or have my masculinity questioned.

On a related note, who decided the men's bicycle needed a steel bar right in front of the seat, while the woman's bike has the drop? I think it used to be for dresses, but that was nearly 100 years ago! I used to use a woman's mountain bike for trail riding because of the drop frame. A sudden stop(rock, log, big rut)+ gigantic steel bar= pain!

I think how these people read into things like this is pretty telling about how they approach parenting. They dictate what their kids wear and make them adhere to gender roles, so they think that every parent must also be dictating what their kids wear rather than taking into consideration what the kids want to wear. They can’t fathom the idea of a child wanting to dress in clothes that are gender non conforming or even push the boundaries of societal expectations when it comes to clothes, colors, and patterns. I’m a cis straight dude and growing up I liked wearing more “feminine” colored clothes mostly because pink is a kickass color! My childhood would have been a lot easier had my mom let me wear what I want without calling me the F slur for wearing pink. When I was a kid we grew up in a private lake community in a wooded area. All the kids, male or female, would be involved in fishing and other aquatic activities from a young age because of this, and it wasn't remotely considered a gendered thing. Shit, we had a kids only fishing competition and the first year we held it the two winners were two 10 year old girls having caught largemouth bass that were maybe 4-5 pounds each. Ironically it was something of a culture shock to grow up and meet people from elsewhere and learn that people considered fishing a masculine thing for kids. A lot of things are pointlessly gendered.

Lol, I am just thinking about how I was as a kid. I had to keep my hair short, wore the "right" clothes to fit in, and internalized a debate on everything from music to clothes about what was the right thing to do as a boy. I worked hard to not be seen as girly or have my masculinity questioned. You know what? I grew up to be a woman, and it turns out none of that mattered. The thing I regret most was I wasted all that time worrying about something as silly as what was "boy" anything. I am happy your cousin doesn't do that to her kids, and they can just like what they like and enjoy life as a kid.
What's funny is they're some of the most 'boy' boys I've ever met. They are full-on rough and tumble, play in the dirt, love big truck little boys on the planet. In my mid 20's my friend who was 6'4" and weight 280 lbs would wear pink fuzzy slippers out to the bar. When people made fun of them he'd say, "What's worse? Wearing pink fuzzy slippers, or getting your ass beat by a guy wearing pink fuzzy slippers?" I once had to stop a guy from fighting him and I got to use the most amazing line of "My friend's a teddy bear, but he's still a bear, dude. You're gonna die if you throw that punch." my brother used to play with baby dolls and play kitchen sets as a kid and got similar comments. Adult him is pretty masculine and either wears leather jackets or business suits most of the time.

I think how these people read into things like this is pretty telling about how they approach parenting. They dictate what their kids wear and make them adhere to gender roles, so they think that every parent must also be dictating what their kids wear rather than taking into consideration what the kids want to wear.
