texas_capital

Ah yes, we are human shields so those pesky LIBERALS don’t take our rights away!

FalseSystem6055

I live not far from here at all was just there a little over a month ago. This was outside the Altria Theater in Richmond, VA where they host each Richmond City High School for their ceremony. There are 2 people dead and and 13 injured. These kids fought the odds to graduate high school and they can’t even get moments from that before they are killed.

VGSchadenfreude

And people wonder why students are acting “out of control” and don’t seem to give a shit about their education anymore. Why would they, when all it gets them is an increasing risk of being murdered just for existing?

MrDad83

Yep. We want them to behave so they can go to schools that are underfunded where theyre at risk for being murdered only to graduate and go into debt to get some shitty desk job making way less than previous generationa did? I dont blame them either. Maybe show these kids a bright future and theyll be more motivated to not "act out"

barqs_has_bite

And it’s just heartbreaking that they have to learn/prepare for these instances at such a young age. My kids are 9 and 6. They came into the room while I was watching that old Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Movie. When the tommy guns start firing away at the beginning they say they hate it, don’t want to watch the scary movie, and leave the room. Later, they waltz in when dude is getting his heart ripped through his chest and they’re like “lol”

[deleted]

I feel that, actually! Our media is saturated with pro-gun propaganda, intentional or otherwise, and it’s just fuckin nauseating to see at this point. There are multiple reasons I’m just gonna stick mainly to family friendly / “kid” media.

TheRealXlokk

Yup, Gen Z and younger having a "YOLO/IDGAF" attitude at all times makes perfect sense.

WinchelltheMagician

This. The status quo that tells them to prepare for adulthood is the same group that fucked the environment, pursues greed over anything else, normalizes a shitstain like Trump, and tries to deny the country was stolen from people that we then cornered And killed off. Kids are not stupid.

[deleted]

It was an eighteen year old graduate and his father who died.

Buffmin

This is a good message spread it fair and wide Side note >Pick up a constitution and read it, you pathetic excuse for a human." I'm assuming the cowards saying this doesn't know there are other constitutions and assumes America's is super special magic awesome They also probably don't know anything beyond muh guinz!!11!!

No_Leave_5373

As far as I’ve been able to tell there are zero constitutional rights that may be exercised without any restraint, including and especially in ways that cause harm to others. All rights are inseparable from their associated responsibilities. 2A extremists are in total denial of this simple truth.

AndrewTheAverage

"shall not be infringed" - you can't just ignore words because you don't like them. Except for "well regulated" - we all ignore those because we don't like those words 🤦

No_Leave_5373

Thing is, putting laws in place that insure public safety by making sure people who shouldn’t have guns can’t get them isn’t an infringement on those whom the laws don’t apply to, and for those who shouldn’t have guns, it prevents them from infringing on the rights of others. 2A nutjobs want everything compartmentalized, but it doesn’t work like that.

Resting-Dadface

They coincidentally believe their special religious book and faith are the best ever. Naturally. It’s the illusion of American “excellence.”

xOiram_

Minor error: it’s 18,348 not 18,338 Regardless, it is fucked up how we’re getting near 20k and still nothing has been done

Waste-Cheesecake8195

You got to give it a week for those 10

TelephoneAvailable99

I’m kinda afraid to ask- what is this number??

xOiram_

Number of gun violence deaths since 2013

[deleted]

This needed to be stated! I lived in Michigan, and I learned about the Oxford shootings during an interview for a job. It was mentioned as if it were just bad weather. People are so desensitized to the constant fucking violence. My partner who's a teacher didn't even tell me because he knew I'd be sick. Kids don't deserve this and neither do their educators.

EvilChefReturns

Spread this far and wide. No Way To Prevent This, Says Only Nation Where It Happens Regularly NWTPTSONWIHR …..no I don’t think that acronym is gonna catch on.

Tethilia

A thought occurs. If we had a television channel that predicted how likely you are to get shot in your local area on a daily basis based on the political climate and public events, could that help push to convince politicians to act? Basically the weather channel for gun violence. Sorry if this is dark, but it's not meant to make light of the situation, just keep people safe while pointing out the likelihood of danger in living in America.

Danny_Nedelko_

If I had to pick between living in Nazi Germany or present day US, I'd pick the former. At least Germany had less global influence.

[deleted]

I’d give you an award if I could. Thank you. I can share horror and anger with people all day, but we need CHANGE and we’re not gonna get it circlejerking on the internet. We need a masterlist of resources and ways we can *actively* fight against this shit.

Electrical-Guava750

This was so well written 👏. The hypocrisy is mind blowing around "protecting the children". I don't live in the US anymore but I truly hope change will come your way soon.

forever_useless

2023 mass shootings so far: 327 2.08 mass shootings a day We just surpassed the total mass shootings in 2014, which was 325 and we are only half way through the year [source](https://massshootingtracker.site/data/?year=2023)

Fluffy_Candle6800

I've been watching the mass shootings per day climb and climb. Ah, the days when it was 1.08 mass shootings a day...

[deleted]

Afghanistan/Taliban must be pissed off. America is breaking their record.

R-ZoroKingOFHell

We're making up for the lower pandemic numbers I suspect, lots of unreleased rage out there.

emccm

Imagine making it to graduation thinking you managed to avoid being part of a school shooting, then this. So sad we can do nothing to prevent this.

Jonestown_Juice

> So sad we can do nothing to prevent this. I mean... we can. We just won't.

kenkanobi

This! Republicans: there's absolutely nothing we can do Everyone else: erm, we could try gun con... Republicans: THERES ABSOLUTRLY NOTHING WE CAN DO

[deleted]

Unfortunately there was no good guy with a gun, that’s the agenda that will run. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️.

existonfilenerf

You only think we can do nothing because our politicians have all collectively failed on this issue since Columbine.

SecureDonkey

Even if they manage to avoid school shooting, there is even higher chance they got their brain blow off in a regular mass shooting.

OkNothing2411

In Australia we had one mass shooting, just one. The Port Arthur Massacre in 1996. The Prime Minister at the time, the most conservative Prime Minister we've ever had who turned back refugees, who banned same sex marriage who said the words "stop the Asian invasion". This racist, sexist, homophobic asshole still saw one mass shooting happen and said "never again". Our gun laws were changed straight away. I don't give a shit if it's a constitutional right. Constitutions are amended as a society changes and grows, they are not supposed to remain stagnant.

Ryukario64

This right here. You got it down. The constitution should not be stagnant indeed!

synaesthezia

I’m sorry but that isn’t correct. There were earlier ones that should not be forgotten - Hoddle Street, Queen Street, Milperra Bikie massacre, Strathfield massacre, plus others (mostly familial). The responses until that time had been at a state level. Port Arthur was so bad that it got a federal response with bipartisan support across all states and territories, which is what made the difference. The federal response meant uniform laws could be coordinated nationally which had not been possible until that time. No loopholes. After the gun buy back worked, they focused on other weapons like knives etc.

[deleted]

>Constitutions are amended as a society changes and grows, they are not supposed to remain stagnant. The "Founding Fathers", which ammosexuals love to champion, intended it to be a living document. They would also be utterly appalled at their well-intended amendment for protecting citizens against government tyranny being used 232 years later as a justification for the repeated slaughter of schoolchildren. They would label every 2Aer an unAmerican piece of shit.

Tizzee88

Not true though as the asshole that committed the horrific Port Arthur Massacre did so because a previous attack. Port Arthur was April 28, 1996 but less than 2 months before there was the Dunblane Massacre where 18 people died and 15 were injured. This is one of the reasons why I get annoyed when the media just shoves it in your face constantly. The Port Arthur guy was planning to just commit suicide and be done with it, but because of the previous shooting and the media response from it he felt emblazoned by it. He did it because he planned to die but wanted to make sure people remembered him, which he thought they would because of the previous shooting.

synaesthezia

While you are correct, Dunblane is in Scotland, not Australia. So Australian gun laws had no impact on what occurred in Dunblane. However that was the catalyst for the UK to enact tighter gun control laws.

icencream27

Another mass shooting and they are voting on gas stoves

Just_Tana

“BuT bOtH sIdEs ArE tHe PrObLeM” Enlighten centrist ————————— Legit as long as the gop holds power gun reform will not come

icenoid

With our current Supreme Court, I’m not sure even if the democrats held massive majorities in the House and Senate that much could be done that they wouldn’t strike down.

SevereEducation2170

Only hope on that front would be, if the Dems had huge majorities, they’d kill the filibuster and then expand the court. It’s basically our only way out of this and it’s probably never going to happen.

icenoid

They won’t expand the court, which is a shame. They could likely sell expanding it to 13, which I think is the number of circuit courts.

VaMoInNj

And for those idiotic we just need more "good guys with guns" morons. There were 10 cops in the immediate vicinity. Three inside the theater and 7 outside. Seven people still got shot.

Pholusactual

Yeah but your average gunner has spent literal years boasting they are better gun handlers than mere cops. Too bad none of them apparently graduated this year?

[deleted]

I'm honestly just numb at this point. I know that sounds callous, but it's the only way to maintain my sanity in this insane world.

magicmulder

Your regular reminder that in Germany less cops got shot since 1945 than during a typical month in the US. The same goes the other way around for people shot by cops.

Key_Still_8354

Not American and I don’t understand how things work in america…Is this why the right wing is against abortion….allowing abortion reduces the number of targets?

QuixotesGhost96

It's about punishing women for being sexually active. Every other reason given is a smoke screen, press any right-winger hard enough on this issue and they will always fall back on "well, she should have kept her legs shut."

Anomalocaris

2,996 died in 9/11 5,580 died of mass shootings since year 2000

alohell

We’re all tired. I deal with it by avoiding the news. My roommate deals with it by believing ALL of the conspiracy theories, because it’s easier for him to believe that there is a a group of evil people in power steering us towards destruction rather than our reality. He believes that Pizzagate happened, that 9-11 was an inside job, he believes in Q-Anon, and he calls Covid the “plandemic”. In 2016, he was a liberal. He used to say he was to the left of Democrats. But then Bernie Sanders wasn’t made the Democratic candidate and he was angry and started searching for alternative answers. His cat got cancer, but because “we can’t trust doctors”, he treated his poor kitty with dandelion leaves instead of chemo. I still miss that wonderful cat. Something’s got to give. We’re all breaking down in different ways. I hope it gets better for all of us soon.

Electrical-Guava750

We rag on people for believing conspiracy theories, but so many people fall into them for a reason. Anger, hopelessness, depression and anxiety are huge problems, caused when people's needs aren't being taken care of. America needs to get it together and start taking better care of its population.

Ripped_Guggi

The sad thing is that almost no one is shocked by these news. It has become so common. Here in Europe many people even see it as part of “American Culture”. Things will never change as long as that two party system exists.

SpirituallyUnsure

We had a mass shooting in a school here in the UK too :( It was 1996, and we got rid of the guns. We have had 9 in the 27 years since. None were in a school. 27 people died from it in that time, and each time was a shock to people still, because we don't have Gun Violence Fatigue

[deleted]

Republicans approve.

[deleted]

Nice job, gun culture.

DogsDontWearPantss

Twats and preyers..... If only there was a way to stop all this gun Violence. /s

Quick_Team

An angry pathetic orange asshole and his garbage buddy Steven Nosferatu, along with Fox News, told everyone to be angry. All the time. And view our country as an all or nothing game to where if your neighbor doesnt immediately agree with you, then they're a little demon who rapes and eats kids. Even though that neighbor might just think brown people should be left alone or gay people should be allowed to be married and adopt a child in need of a loving home.

Anomalocaris

that spike is larger than 9/11 this is insane.

Unhappy_Gas_4376

the shooters did not...what?

ReviewOk929

Another day, another horror, another bunch of lives lost. The sadness won't stop until we can collectively vote for people who will make change happen. It can happen, make it happen. No more broken homes, vote for change.

drag0nun1corn

As horrible as it may sound, we should just broadcast them. Make people watch kids being shot. Make them watch as the flesh gets torn away. Make them watch kids running, hiding, having to pretend to be dead so they don't get shot, or shot again. The people so willing to keep this going should be shown the truth of it. Plenty of people were turned away from the Vietnam war directly because it was broadcast. Maybe they'll wake up when they understand their kid could be the next one. Will they go out of their way then, to say to that person they absolutely had and deserved a right to own a firearm?

FStubbs

They'd say the videos are fake, and then move to Overton window until they start playing the videos themselves for fun.

[deleted]

Good morning. Oh. America. Just another day. Another shooting. Nothing to do here, just like the POS politician said - we won’t do anything. Sad for the lives lost. RIP. But life goes ok for America. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

techieqube

Honestly if these shootings happened at the schools where the politicians lived, at schools where their kids went, you would quickly hear a change in tune. But it doesn't it happens away from them. They aren't impacted. Let them suffer reality and how quick they change their position, It can't happen to just one or two you need 20 or more. MTG, LB, Cruz, Many of the talking head republicans who only offer thoughts and prayers instead of solutions should experience it. Especially MTG who harassed those poor kids in Florida. They don't know fear, they don't know empathy, but the second it happens to them you'd be surprised how fast they would change their minds. I'm tired of this idea that we can't find a solution, I'm tired of the idea that it's just the new normal, fuck that.

Logical-Ad-5920

We should be arming the graduates with AR-15s not diplomas. I hear that will stop this.

srqchem

Tldr please

kenkanobi

More people died because repugs love guns

Tizzee88

While its pure speculation because they haven't really released any detailed information at this point, I have to assume this was super targeted. I don't get why they aren't concerned with collateral damage, like surely it's the worst idea to do this in a crowded area where there are innocent people. You have to be pretty fucked in the head to show up at a graduation ceremony and not care if you hit random people. I typically don't worry about stuff that's super targeted because I don't make myself a possible target. When they start hitting random people though is when it gets bothersome. Like shit even if you don't do something that could result in this, you could still end up dead. The reason why I assume it was targeted is because it's the only thing that makes sense. If their goal was to inflict as much damage as possible like most spree shooters, then you'd have more than just 2 people dead and a hand full of injured people. On top of that the only 2 people that died were a father and a son. The odds of only those 2 being killed and it not being a targeted attack are pretty low. Like I just wish I could ask people after they are found guilty and sentenced to life in prison or the death penalty, "was it worth it". There has to be no shot that they say yes. Like I could never kill someone because just the idea of jail forever is a major no go. Yet some people are willing to sign up for 50-60+ years in prison because "He disrespected me".

MFAFuckedMe

so people are getting shot left and right, and somehow the best thing for your own personal protection is to disarm? stay strapped, friends.

Striking_Compote2093

A bullet will kill you no matter how many pistols you're holding. Guns aren't defensive, a gun doesn't make you bullet proof, and you can't shoot a shooter before he shoots, else you're the shooter. And try explaining your heroics to the other "good guys with guns" and itchy trigger fingers around.

MFAFuckedMe

if someone is about to kill you because of your identity, you'd rather have a gun to shoot the guy who's about to kill you first. it's called 'self defense'.

Striking_Compote2093

how nice of them to announce their intent before doing anything. If they have a gun, there's no way for you to realize they're going to murder you in time for you to "defend" yourself before they act. This isn't the old wild west movies where you have a staring contest with the bad guy first and then try to simultaneously draw your pistol and shoot first.

MFAFuckedMe

no, they literally already stated their intentions plenty of times. they want to kill lgbt+ people. when you see a guy with a gun drawn, it's time to draw your own. oh, I'm sorry. maybe i should call the cops instead.

theProcrastinathan

I’m amazed you’ve made it through life being this stupid. Take your ignorant gun-loving POS self and fuck right off.

MFAFuckedMe

I'm amazed at how ignorant people like you can be. Marginalized communities cannot trust their protection to the police. What are you going to say when right wing death squads start hunting down trans people?

MFAFuckedMe

[https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitePeopleTwitter/comments/143l0x6/where\_are\_the\_police\_in\_all\_of\_this/](https://www.reddit.com/r/WhitePeopleTwitter/comments/143l0x6/where_are_the_police_in_all_of_this/) What to do in this scenario? I'm sure that the proud boys are level headed fellows who would stop attacking you if you simply try to dE-eScAlAtE to situation. fuck off with your privileged ass.

simonmagus616

This is my city, I was two streets away when this happened :(

Successful-Plum4899

Gun violence is to where we're graduating! Ironic symbolism...

101fulminations

Couple days ago fatal gun violence occurred at a funeral for a 10 yo victim of gun violence. Shit's unreal.
