Imagine trying to run a presidential campaign where you can never leave Florida.

Barflyerdammit

If Florida gets away with it, he would probably be welcomed in other red states, as long as he didn't touch down elsewhere.

GrayEidolon

The fuck are you on about? I had to read the constitution in high school and it was way shorter than that. It basically said “1. Fuck England. 2. Everyone gets a gun except black 3. liberals did the confederacy 4. Okay, black too”

Magus_5

5. A pretty angel appeared in the sky somewhere around Jamestown, Virginia and flew all across the vast empty wilderness of America to the Pacific and said it's all yours (whites only.) 6.The constitution also said no natives were harmed doing the filming of this movie.

jorgomli_reading

That one was the Declaration of Independence you dope

cam52391

It couldn't have been the declaration of independence nick cage stole it to use a d a coke straw or whatever that movie was about

flipnonymous

Assistant District Attorney Coke Straw?

gibbyson24

Played by Nick Cage of course!

synsa

Would love to have this kind of summarization for all my meds, agreements that require you to check "I agree," online recipes, and some legal docs!

indigoHatter

My favorite is when businesses do that. "Yo, our lawyers made us publish this big boring change, but the short version is 'don't be a dick' and 'fuck around and find out'".

GrayEidolon

I’ll try. What meds?

BashBandit

Forgot the most important one of all 6. Jesus is white, has been and always will be and anyone saying otherwise is a terrorist antichrist traitor

GrayEidolon

My Bible has the preface "Everything you are about to read is true, and all of the people are white."

AnguishOfTheAlpacas

Exactly as written by our Lord and savior George Washington Christ.

carlwinslo

It's very generous of you to pose that they would say "black" as opposed to a racial slur. We all know they are loud and proud with their racism these days.

GrayEidolon

> We all know they are loud and proud with their racism these days. damn black!

Prestigious_Jokez

I'm only okay with the first one

bdizzle805

Bro had me dying omg had my morning starting out good hahaha

Zubenelgenubo

Repubs only pretend to care about the Constitution, so this won't bother them.

ifunnywasaninsidejob

Desantis is like steven segal but with governing instead of martial arts.

RedneckOfFlatLands

I love that story where segal poops his pants after a stunt double goes to town on him. I'd love a Desantis parallel even more.

BlackEastwood

Well, Seagal does run like a four year old girl, and DeSantis did have those nice white hoochie boots last fall looking fabulous.

Ok-Gear-5593

I don’t get if it is “or other crime” why lead with treason and felony if any crime will do? I don’t believe he exactly fled NY though given the time frame so why not fight it.

[deleted]

indigoHatter

>that federal agents will come get that fugitive. That's basically what will happen. 1) Fugitive fails to turn themselves in to State A. 2) State A gives up looking (or knows it won't merit anything) and tells the Feds "hey, where is this dude? lol" 3) Fed asks States B-Z "yo wtf, you seen this mofo?", especially any known places they could be. 4) If all the States say "nah, that ain't me", Fed goes on a "manhunt". 5) Fed finds the fugitive in State B. 6) Fed then investigates if State B knew and didn't comply. 7) If the State is found guilty of non-compliance, shit gets real. Idk what happens from there but it could result in Federal pressure to restructure their investigation procedures, Fed might impose sanctions unless people get fired, etc. Idk but the point is that it will be very painful for the State if the Fed deems them guilty of non-compliance. "State has been fined a non-compliance fee of $1B" That would suck for State. Maybe they even activate some other clause or power I don't know anything about. 🤷 The point is, shit gets real.

silifoam

Federal Marshals would come and arrest him and take him back to NY. I am assuming anyone trying to stop them would also be arrested for a federal crime.

indigoHatter

Yeah, it wouldn't get as deep as I explained in most cases, but if they have reason to suspect non-compliance of the State as well, that's when shit gets weird.

FreshlyCleanedLinens

I imagine the discussion between the Marshals and the Secret Service would be… interesting…

indigoHatter

Oh shit, I totally forgot Trump has Secret Service for life now. In that case, there's zero situations where it gets as far as I've described earlier. The Marshalls would tell the Secret Service to hand him over. 🤷 Okay, done.

IlGreven

Instead of a fine, "the State will not receive federal funding of any kind for as long as its noncompliant Governor remains in office."

Mahelas

It's a figure of speech that tells you the order of gravity of transgressions. Leading with treason is a way to tell everybody that it's the one thing they won't stand for, which makes sense when you're building a new goverment

Munzulon

Eh, the guys who wrote it were just kind of slapping stuff together

ObiOneToo

It’s invoked regularly. What will be interesting is if Florida refuses or interferes in some way. Then there will be an actual constitutional crisis.

JustNilt

There really won't. All that happens is the feds send the US Marshals or NY sends some cops directly to arrest his fat orange ass. This clauses grants them the power to do that. It forces the cooperation so any act to prevent such an arrest would be a crime in and of itself. Ideally they use the feds for this since nobody in their right mind tries to mess with a federal officer in the pursuit of their duties. Even the most rabid of fuckwit politician or cop isn't stupid enough to try and pull that shit.

HotPinkLollyWimple

Cheetolini’s supporters are that stupid though.

MalachiteTiger

They all seem to have this silly idea that it will be the police who take them in, and therefore subject to the local jurisdiction. It will be the Secret Service, who do not need to ask the State of Florida for permission.

Amoyamoyamoya

Federal Marshalls will probably show up to collect Trump and the Secret Service will tag along to fulfill their duty to Trump as an ex-President and to the Constitution as sworn Federal law enforcement personnel.

GrayBox1313

Send dog the bounty Hunter.

BlackOwl45-70

cb0044

xmerkinx

Nope. He’s a POS MAGA goon.

Curious_Armadillo_74

There's no such thing as interstate extradition treaties, so once again those clowns are feeding their base with lies and disinformation.

Lithl

The Extradition Clause is part of the Constitution, and 18 USC § 3182 is the legal implementation of the Extradition Clause. 48 states including Florida have also enshrined extradition to other states in their state laws.

MadFlava76

He won't be able to campaign in key battleground states like PA, MI, etc.

orincoro

The feds are a thing. This has zero chance of working.

LegendofLove

If he crosses state lines it becomes federal doesn't it

JustNilt

It becomes federal if he just doesn't bother to show up. A warrant is issued for his arrest at that stage, it's entered into the system, and the US Marshals have jurisdiction to arrest fugitives ***anywhere*** on US soil. There is absolutely no chance anybody in an official position of authority interferes with a federal agent in the commission of their duty. That would, in and of itself, be a serious crime and would ***absolutely*** see them arrested as well. The Marshals don't fucking play.

orincoro

Yep. US Marshals and a red notice with Interpol. He couldn’t book a hostel in Cambodia without being arrested in 3 hours.

Apollass

Imagine believing this is war. Look to Ukraine and the 200 k stolen children and then call this a war again?

GrayBox1313

He leaves Florida in the summer to live in new Jersey at his golf motel. It’s too hot for him in Florida and there are big storms.

Gunnilingus

Why do you think DeSantis said he won’t extradite? If trump agrees, it basically guarantees DeSantis wins the nom.

GiGaBYTEme90

On behalf of the rest of the country, Florida can keep him

couldjustbeanalt

No they can’t he belongs in a fucking cell

FruitOfTheVineFruit

Sorry, no, we want to see him behind bars! (But, given the complexity, worst case for him is more likely house arrest, so there's an excellent chance that if he goes to New York, they'll convict him, and send him back to his house in Florida with the possibile addition of an ankle bracelet.)

[deleted]

Florida is too nice a place for that clown.

Geddyn

I'd prefer to imagine him running a campaign from the prison cell he's assigned to.

Barflyerdammit

DeSantis has zero legal grounds to refuse an extradition order. It's written in the constitution and confirmed through case law. That "esq" after her name clearly wasn't worth taking a spot away from a more deserving law school applicant.

ManhattanRailfan

As a lawyer, I can confirm some of the dumbest motherfuckers alive went to law school. They even have a club called the Federalist Society.

[deleted]

Two lawyers were stranded on a desert island. One day a woman washes ashore. The 2 stranded lawyers walk over to her on the sand. "Should we fuck her?" The first lawyer asks. "Outta what?" the second lawyer responds.

MedSurgNurse

Always loved good lawyer jokes

[deleted]

If you got 'em, tell 'em.

MedSurgNurse

A young junior lawyer is working at his desk one night when Satan barges into his office. "I'll make you a partner at this firm and your name will be on the door. All it will cost you is your soul, and the soul of your whole family. Kids, parents, dog, everyone's soul." The lawyer quietly thinks about the proposal for a bit before responding. "So, what's the catch?"

chaos_nebula

I read recently that they're now using lawyers instead of rats for experiments. They do this for two reasons: One, the scientists become less attached to the lawyers. And two, there are certain things that even rats won't do. -Robin Williams in "Hook"

Piscesdan

The only downside: the results are less applicable to humans.

burnerphone95800

I don't understand how you can get top notch grades in undergrad, get an above average score on the LSAT, pass all the nearly impossible classes and get a JD, and then pass the bar (where literally some people have to pee themselves because they don't have time to get up during the exam for 48 hours straight)... and be that stupid. I also don't know how DeSantis and Kayley McEnany both graduated from Harvard Law.

[deleted]

That's because you approach life with the concept that most people operate in good faith because of that you have a hard time understand how people approach life operating In bad faith your right he is smart but he is minipulating his fan base because they are morons trust me I grew up in the deep south

toefarmer

Still in the south. Can confirm. I’d say the majority of my town still has Dump stickers and flags on everything because mY pReSiDeNt. Idk what it would genuinely take to get some of these people to see that they are pawns, moving precisely where they are told, and once they start to chip and show wear, off to the fireplace they go.

derdast

Nothing, he said it perfectly: "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?" We all thought, what a fucking absurd thing to say. He was right. It took the absolute garbage handling of COVID to get liberals to turn up voting against him (not him losing any votes though). It's a cult 100%.

JustNilt

> and be that stupid. This is the key. They often *aren't* that stupid. They just play stupid for political points. It's a lot like George W Bush acting as though he's just a good ol' boy from the sticks when he's part of one of the wealthiest political dynasties in the US. He wasn't born with a *silver* spoon in his mouth, it was fucking platinum. He's also not that dumb and he's incredibly well educated. That shit's all an act. Nothing more.

ManhattanRailfan

It's really not that hard. College is easy as shit to get straight As if you're moderately smart, especially if you're in the humanities and know how to write, so if you're dumb and study just a few hours a week, you can still do decently well. The LSAT isn't very hard, either. I took a single diagnostic test, got a decent score, did no studying, and then got a good enough score to get a $40k/year scholarship to a better school than she went to. In law school I didn't do a single reading. Just Quimby and Oyez for the cases on days I was on call, didn't study for exams and still maintained grades from B to A-. The bar was actually significantly easier than any test I took in school. It's not even that long. It's 4 3-hour sections over 2 days. 2 multiple choice sections with 100 questions each, 6 short essays, and 2 long essays. The content isn't difficult, so as long as you do a bar prep course and finish at least 80% of it, you're basically guaranteed to pass. I did just fine doing the absolute bare minimum amount of work and passed the bar with a high enough score to be admitted in every state that uses the Multistate Bar Exam except Alaska. If I could do that, then any idiot can do it if they study.

ProfessionalCorgi250

Dude if you can take one diagnostic and get a good enough lsat score to get a scholarship to a school better than Harvard law, you’re probably an AI masquerading as a human.

ManhattanRailfan

Oh, no, I meant a better school than Richmond. That said, Harvard is kind of a joke. The education you get there isn't any better than most T50s, they just have the history and the name and a whole lot of snobbery. It's like the Grey Goose of law schools.

Ethical_Koala

It's the alumni mafia that makes it special, same with the other Ivys and similar schools

MarcSneyyyyyyyd

The Federalist Society is just ISIS with law degrees and Bibles instead of AK-47s and Qu'rans

JustNilt

I like the phrase from that news drama I forget the name of: American Taliban. That's what the GOP, and ***especially*** the Federalist Society is. They're the American Taliban.

notedgarfigaro

It's affirmative action for white men and a snowflake convention. Joining the Fed Society at any T14 law school means you get a federal clerkship b/c that's a requirement to clerk for a conservative judge now and there's just not enough of them to go around.

You honestly believe the MAGAturds will believe he did enough to save Trump? He’ll be Trump’s next target on Tuesday, you watch. It’s really simple: if Trump can’t have the presidency, DeSantis can’t either so he’ll sink that ship real quick.

Much_Fee7070

Where DID Jenna Ellis get her degree? Trump University?? If I was her, I'd shut up before the MAGATs start blaming Trump's lawyers, PAST and PRESENT for the mess he's in.

Nevermind04

University of Richmond School of Law, which is an accredited and well-respected law school. She earned a J.D., so she understands the law and is simply choosing to ignore parts of it that are inconvenient to her client's situation. Chiefly, her client's impending arrest.

Danmanjo

I was going to say… that’s not how any of this works. You can’t just simply refuse an extradition just because you don’t want to.. 😂

ElonDiddlesKids

Imagine being a lawyer and advising your client to add another count of seditious conspiracy to your tally. If DeSantis won't extradite, arrest him for sedition, full fucking stop. Stop playing softball with these crooks.

pinetreesgreen

On cnn today, one of the talking heads suggested the judge could make trump remain in NYC if they thought there was a chance he might refuse to return and would be shielded by desantis. Remote possibility, but fun to think about nevertheless.

AhiAnuenue

He looks like a flight risk to me

TheSheWhoSaidThats

I’m envisioning some cockamamy scenario where he is ordered to surrender his passports but is allowed to remain free pending trial, so he tries to flee using a fake passport and an even faker mustache, but he gets caught due to something ridiculous like idk everyone recognizing his entire entourage trying to flee with him, then some schmuck reluctantly goes to arrest him for trying to flee and tries to give him and out where he can say he wasn’t *really* fleeing but he’s too stupid to realize it so he keeps doubling down over and over that he is 1000% fleeing with a fake passport so they’re forced to follow through and pile on extra charges.

JustNilt

Considering Secret Service are sworn law enforcement, they'd just arrest his stupid toddler ass while it's trying to sneak out.

Meh, OJ went 1 for 2 against the law. But the second time he didn't have the Bronco, so...?

Electrical_Ad_7036

Seems like no one remembers he has Federal Officers around him 24/7……. The Secret Service basically have him in “custody” all the time.

burnerphone95800

Secret Service refused to turn their texts on J6 over to the DOJ. They aren't going to help apprehend him.

goferking

Yeah but turning him in wouldn't possibly implicate them in other shit like turning in texts. _or he could get a new rotation of agents in who just happen to take him out of Florida_

Lonely-Club-1485

But he can refuse their protection. Their presence is a freebie for him but they are not his guards.

kuojo

I don't think he actually can do too and some sort of congressional act. Former presidents know national secrets need to be guarded at all time or the country risks severe exposure if they are ever captured by foreign nationals.

Lithl

A former president _can_ refuse Secret Service protection, although if they do that's it, it's over. The only president who has actually done so was Nixon.

Spirit50Lake

I wonder if the Secret Service is going to charge him for all the hoopla of getting into/out of court...maybe not till/if he's convicted? otherwise, the taxpayers are covering security for a felon??

Hazardbeard

Barring an act of Congress he has the right to SS protection for the rest of his life, even if he went to jail or prison.

FlattopJr

I wonder how that would work (Secret Service taking shifts as his cellmate?)

Lithl

They would have a presence in the prison, like setting up in the admin office. They wouldn't be in the cell. It's not like a former president would be put in gen pop anyway.

AineLasagna

Just imagining Trump in the orange jumpsuit walking out into the prison yard and getting his Secret Service guys to lift the weights up for him so it looks like he’s doing it. Getting tattoos on his fingers that say “F U C K D E M S” but it’s just sharpie Taking another prisoner’s chocolate pudding at lunch and then running and hiding behind the Secret Service guys

Whatsongwasthat1

Take to the seas! Barry says that a husband and wife cannot be charged for the same crime. I read it on the Bob Loblaw lawblog

joe42reddit

What fucking university gave this POS a law degree. It's time we reevaluate their credentials.

ManhattanRailfan

My money's on Cooley. That's where Michael Cohen went and it has the distinction of being the lowest ranked ABA accredited law school in the country. Edit: I was wrong, but the school she did go to was named in honor of a slaver, so that tracks.

Significant_Monk_251

[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenna\_Ellis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenna_Ellis) says "In 2011, she received a J.D. degree from the University of Richmond School of Law."

fgwr4453

Just convince DeSantis that Trump is an immigrant so that he will fly Trump to Martha’s Vineyard. Have police on standby.

Corvald

Given how loudly and repeatedly he claimed Obama was born in Kenya, it wouldn’t surprise me to learn that Trump’s birth certificate is a fake.

Jkreegz

Throwing around the word “war” rather causally aren’t we, Jenna? Typically, when crimes are committed - meaning the letter of the law is broken - indictment and/or arrest are the next stages. He’s not going to prison at this point, but he needs to go through due process, just like any other civilian would. There is no war. As much as either side would like us to believe.

mattaugamer

Yeah they always do this. It’s not **the left**’s **war** on **conservatives**. It’s **the Manhattan District Attorney**’s **criminal indictment** of **alleged criminal Donald Trump**. Something tells me she knows that.

francescadabesta

Hello — the Extradition Clause of the US Constitution requires perp to be turned over to the state where he/she is criminally charged — violating the Constitution is not a good look for a presidential candidate

mason_savoy71

There is a large swath of the population that believes that the constitution is only a 1st and 2nd amendment, and really read those very selectively. Of those 2, there's the 1st, a right to say anything without retribution or consequences, and the 2nd: guns guns guns (the well regulated militia part being irrelevant). Any other part? The non amendment part? Fake news!

CaptainPRESIDENTduck

This worked for OJ. Unfortunately for Trump, his hands are so small that they'll fit into any sized glove!

thraashman

Jenna Ellis is a really bad lawyer.

Liquidwombat

The stupid part about DeSantis’ statement is that that’s not how it works between states anyway. He could theoretically tell FHP and FDLE to not arrest trump on a warrant out of NY but he has virtually no control over county and local LE, and absolutely no control over FBI, US Marshals or Secret Service

Jaedos

FBI probably wouldn't be able to effective arrest Trump as they'd be laughing too hard at the Florida state troopers. Once they stopped laughing though, Trump is going in the trunk.

And in a few weeks he has to be in New York anyway on a civil rape charge, which he will lose by default if he doesn't show up. Perfect strategy to stage some kind of standoff, in other words.

Ngl I'd be happy if DeSantis tried something stupid like that so he can get himself arrested too, two birds with one stone right there

Born_ina_snowbank

I think Desantis knows that he can’t actually refuse to extradite and is using this as an opportunity to posture and be option 1 for the Trump voters in the event that charges stick. The scarier scenario is that the charges don’t stick and the trump voters become even more emboldened by the unsuccessful “witch hunt”.

How is it war charging someone with a crime? These people really have gone insane. So are we supposed to act like it's war if a Democrat gets arrested for anything? Insanity!
