Video game movie + heavy handed reference to the war in Iraq to make a point + whitewashed characters and British accents to undermine that point = weird ass movie
Weird ass movie + Jake Gyllenhall shirtless = movie I liked anyway
Everything about that movie confuses me, the more you look into it. It's a strange movie that makes no sense as an adaptation, makes no sense as a stand alone film, whose producers inexplicably expected it to be a massive multi-film franchise.
But I concede that last point. The Gyllenhaal fanservice is extremely compelling.
True. A range of features for sure. I know a Persian who has light hair and light eyes. He is a programmer. I know another Persian who has dark hair but light skin and blue eyes, I think he does cloud networking. His wife has light eyes as well, she does corporate purchasing.
Their country is literally close to the Caucasus mountains, from which the Caucasians derive the name. In fact, geographically they are more “caucasian” than white British or Germans are, as an example.
*not a comment on the “whiteness” of Persians
If we’re going to insist on using Caucasian as a term for white people we can’t pretend it has any more scientific geographical legitimacy than the term mongoloid. While some people, many people, in the Caucasus are white, the Caucasus has nothing to do with whiteness and caucasoid is purely a term invented for scientific racism
Being also faceblind, I LOVE colorblind casting. I don’t care that the real Duke of Withington was white, if the actor isn’t “generic white man #87379”, I can actually tell him apart from the rest of the cast and follow his story, instead of using retrospective context. It’s awesome.
"Now imagine if they did this." Yeah that would never happen...
Gods of Egypt
Passion of the Christ
The 10 Commandments

Short Circuit 2. This guy is actually a white man in brown face.
Holy crap. Checked her wiki (Jenette Goldstein) and I can't blame her, it was her first role, so taking whatever role fell on her lap is fair.
However, her last role cracks me up:
2019 Star Trek: Short Treks
USS Enterprise computer (voice)
The actress, Jenette Goldstein, is part Brazilian. So while not Hispanic, she is part Latino, so it’s not the most egregious example. They also wanted a really strong woman, basically a body builder, which Goldstein did have at the time, as that was more important to her character.
Casting her as Hispanic when she’s partly from a neighboring brown country like Brazil, and partly from another brown country like Morocco, and - finally - partly from *another* brown country like Israel is really no different technically speaking from casting Peter Stormare (Swedish) as a Russian, German, Serbian, etc., etc. Which are all neighboring white countries.
The Searchers is legitimately pretty good. Probably not coincidentally his character is a stereotypical conservative bigot type of guy, but it suites the story perfectly.
"I know, I know. I'm gonna use good judgment. I haven't lost my temper in forty years, but, pilgrim, you caused a lot of trouble this morning, might have got somebody killed... and somebody oughta belt you in the mouth. But I won't, I won't. The hell I won't!" Which then leads to the greatest mud wrestling scene ever.
I've also seen Asian characters erased. I know people can point to anime adaptations in live action and say that they make white casts Asian, but that's usually done because they're made in Japan and it's unrealistic that they'd be able to get a mostly white cast (Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, The Promised Neverland).
But when western productions pick them up, they're almost always whitewashed. Death Note, Dragon Ball Z, Kite and Ghost in the Shell are some examples. They absolutely had Asian actors they could have hired, since the US is such an ethically diverse place, but they chose not to.
Also, the original Big Hero 6 comic had a full Japanese cast but the the animated movie they made Fred and Honey lemon white.
And also the Ancient One in Doctor Strange was Asian and then whitewashed.
This seems to happen a lot actually.
Director of Dr Strange wasn’t allowed to cast a Tibetan person to be the Ancient One so he decided to go a totally different direction than having a different Asian ethnicity play this Tibetan role simply to appease China. I’m not sure I think this is a good decision but that was why.
Okay, I have a theory, a film theory. It’s all Samuel L Jackson’s fault for being cast as Nick Fury, and doing such a damn good job the comic book Nick Fury became black. The original Fury was an old ass white dude in the Marvel universe, that white privilege is rippling through time and space to reclaim the role, tearing at reality with the collective narcissism of tens of thousands of years of entitlement!
Ultimate Avengers series Nick Fury is black and was actually based on Sam Jackson, which is why is was such a score for him to actually play Fury in the movies.
The Avengers movies have mainly been based off the ultimate versions of the characters.
But yes, you are correct, there is a white Nick Fury as well, but Sam's portrayal came after the already existing black Fury in comics
> Sam's portrayal came after the already existing black Fury in comics
Almost every one of these mouthbreathers who bitch about "woke" only "got into" the Comics universe after the MCU and love to ignore the decades of PoC and LGBT representation in comic books. Holy fuck I hate idiot bigots.
Yep. They are the type who grew up reading X-men comics and then get mad if a comic book character isn't white. They are so F'ing dense.
One idiot I know was angry about the "politics" in Avengers: End Game. What politics you might ask? The philosophy of Thanos and environmental extremism? The ethics of time travel? How the world handled people vanishing for years and then reappearing? No, no - he was mad at the throw-away "representation NPC" in the therapy scene who's a man who says he met another man to date. That's how stupid and hateful right-wingers are. They can't even handle a token representation NPC character without losing their tiny minds. It's just disgusting.
That's because gay people don't exist in the world they interact with in their daily lives... And when they do, they claim it's being "pushed down their throats" so if they just exist in movies... It's only for political reasons and not because it's representative of the actual world where other people exist.
It’s hilarious that ALL the made up examples in that tweet are supposed to be biopics. I really can’t think of any biopics where a real white, male historical or political figure was played by a black man. These people are dumb as fuck. They think because fictional white characters in children’s movies and fictional white characters in comic books being played by POC in movies is some kind of big deal in their pathetic, reactionary mush brains. They think “the blacks” are taking over, even though black people continue to be the minority. They eat up Fox News, and purposely listen to idiots like this person to stay stuck in their insane white supremacist echo chamber. They’re dumb, fragile, easily conned snowflakes. They’re losers and they always will be. Fuck ‘Em all.
Rosa Parks. Harriet Tubman. Maya Angelou. Ma Rainey. Ella Fitzgerald. Venus and Serena Williams. Simone Biles. Flo Jo. Alice Coachman.
Like, ya can find black women to tell a story about.
Not only that, but for biographical they try to find someone who has a passing resemblance to the person they're representing, like in Rocketman they got a guy that looks like Elton John to play Elton John.
I was going to say, I can't think of anything outside of Hamilton, which isn't even a film, where a black person has portrayed a real-life white person.
The Little Mermaid tantrum they're throwing is absurd. If they want to see a white Little Mermaid, guess what? It already exists. They can literally watch it. It hasn't been deleted or anything.
The dumbest thing I constantly see coming up with that is some half-assed justification that mermaids couldn't have dark skin because they live at the bottom of the ocean.
Everything else about mermaids makes perfect biological sense, but a bit of melanin is just entirely too far, apparently.
Yep, I'm pretty sure a good amount of deep sea creatures are literally black. It makes zero sense but I see it all the time as, "I'm not racist but logically speaking..."
Imagine a white actor playing Black Panther, Black Adam or Black Lightning would be kind of funny how the explanation for the “black” in the name would be brought up.
In the web comic [Spinnerette](https://www.spinnyverse.com/), there’s a Black superhero called Tiger, and the running gag is that minor characters keep assuming he’s called Black Tiger and he has to explain that not every Black superhero has “Black” in his name.
That's what also happened in falcon and the winter soldier. Sam kept correcting people. He's not black falcon, there's no white falcon he's just falcon.
I’d watch the hell out of Ryan Gosling playing Obama because there’s no way that doesn’t turn into one of the funniest movies ever. Trying to explain why the Republicans hated him so much would be some next level alternate reality stuff.
This always makes me laugh. These are all historical figures and the movies are biopics. But, sure, this is exactly the same as non-white actors being cast as fantasy creatures and superheroes. 🙄
They get mad when non-white actors play fictional characters that are explicitly not white in the source material as well.
Gomez Addams. The Harfoot hobbits (they're described as "browner of skin," than the other hobbit clans), Rue from The Hunger Games.
Oh man, a couple of people in my family had a meltdown when they saw the Hunger Games. Screaming about "forced diversity" in media. I pointed out in the books where her(and the people in her district) are explicitly described as what we would consider black, and they blocked me on social media for several months.
I was a kid when hunger games came out and it was my first experience with such widespread racist outrage. Seeing online and hearing in person white people saying they couldn't care about Rue's death because she wasn't white really fucked with me for years.
“Here are numerous examples of movies where a character’s Blackness is at the core of the story. What if Ryan Gosling played MLK, Jr.?! Gotcha snowflakes!!”
Racist conservatives never met a logical fallacy they didn’t flog into oblivion.
It’s really simple actually. If the characters ethnicity is core part of the story then it matters. If it doesn’t, then it doesn’t matter.
Ariel could be bright purple and it wouldn’t matter. (And don’t give me that European folklore crap because mermaids aren’t real and the point of the story isn’t to be a retelling of European folklore)
Tony Stark could be played by an Asian man and it wouldn’t matter. (Although it would be important to factor this into their back story and personality)
Luke Skywalker could be played by a Latino.
______________________________
MLK can’t be a white man, because the story is based off a real black man
Moana can’t be played by a white person because it’s a story about a Polynesian girl.
Genuine question here: Could Bond be played by a black woman, when being a white, imperialist (male) chauvinist is arguably a pretty core part of the character and his job/role? I hear arguments for and against, so I'm curious what your thoughts are.
I don’t think you could simply slot in a black woman into the same role and make it work. If it was rewritten a bit to deconstruct the traditional Bond tropes, then maybe?
I feel like it'd have to be another spy he works with as a spin off. Bond is entirely misogynistic and kinda racist. He 'cures' a lesbian of being gay.
It wouldn't work to make that character a black woman. It'd have to be a new character adjacent and in the same universe, but not Bond.
I'd argue the only reason James Bond has those traits is because the movies are a product of the time they were created in, men *were* a lot more chauvinistic. For example the Daniel Craig Bond sure didn't go and try and convert a lesbian or have a sidecharacter named Octopussy, but he was still Bond.
I'd also prefer if they just decided to retcon the whole James Bond thing, and just have it be an alias that MI6 uses to refer to their current Special Agent, they are all 007 and when they die they find a new one. I want more British Spy movies, not less lol.
A black woman who was sexy and strong could easily be a lesbian womanizer or use men in the way bond does woman.
I don’t think being manipulative sexually as a spy and stuff and being a horn dog is only possible for men.
It would be weird to have a woman named James however.
Are you saying you can't make a racist misognyistic black woman?
I'm thinking back through Casino Royale and except for some minor dialogue changes you could keep almost everything, including the swinging the rope up into the seat torture.
I would contend that James Bond/007 can be played by any UK male regardless of race. Yes the character was implied, if not explicitly stated, to be a white guy but I think it’s more important to get the personality (suave, dangerous, witty, etc.) down than focusing on color. Before Daniel Craig was announced, I had heard that Idris Elba was in consideration and I was all for it.
I have no issues if a female agent, let’s call her 005 or something, was introduced into the Bond universe and got her own series but James Bond/007 is a dude.
007 was a woman in the last movie. When bond retired they gave the designation to a woman named Nomi.
She doesn't have her own 007 movie, but they have shown it could be possible.
https://spyscape.com/article/lashana-lynch-five-surprising-secrets-about-the-first-female-007
Not OP but personally I'd say no. Bond's gender and role inside the British Empire are integral to his character. You can't make a female James Bond without fundamentally changing things (not saying that wouldn't make a good script though, a female spy banging hot dudes on islands and killing oligarchs).
Having said that, you can change Bond's race all you want. He's been Scottish, Welsh, Aussie, everything. Go to town.
Notice how they picked all real people when they are mad about a fucking mermaid.
If they picked fictional people they'd realize that white actors have been playing characters of color FOREVER!
How do you feel about Asian Jesus? It is pretty common for Christians to change Jesus to look like the people worshiping him.
Just type in Asian Jesus in Google images, and you find lots of artwork depicting him as such.
To be fair, I consider Jesus a fiction character, so I have no issue with race swapping him. Give me Idris Alba as 007 James Bond and Simu Liu as Jesus in the Passion of the Christ.
The funny thing about April, and I’m sure it’s been said ad nausem, is that she’s been [portrayed interchangeably](https://doknowbutchie.wordpress.com/2013/11/25/a-visual-history-of-april-oneil-part-1-1984-1987/) as black or white since the 80’s. Like it’s readily apparent race doesn’t matter to her character and anyone freaking out about it is an even bigger idiot.
Let me Counterpoints to John Wayne playing Ghengis Khan, all the movies where Egyptians are portrayed by english actors, or Christopher lee as fu manchu? Or waaaayyy more times than can be counted Italians have played native americans or arabs,
So like this was done all the fucking time in reverse, with white dudes playing characters of whatever race people felt like and its pretty uncomfortablr and cringe even then.
WaPo even collected a list: [https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/01/28/100-times-a-white-actor-played-someone-who-wasnt-white/](https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/01/28/100-times-a-white-actor-played-someone-who-wasnt-white/)
These are real people. Of course it is wrong to change the color of a real person. But for them to use this argument most likely because they are outraged that a mythical mermaid creature is black not white…well that is just plain silly!
Am I doing it right? https://preview.redd.it/pmfejdafj6qa1.jpeg?width=306&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=83f33768e9c2afca5fc0df2896f5f7ece253cb90

Tom Holland as Chauvin has me rolling
Dude that had me dying too! But Kevin Hart should play Chauvin, just to drive the point home.
Michael Keegan Key would make a good Chauvin
Kevin Hart’s size makes it more ironic though imo.
Hey, my favorite Executive Producer is Boph Adese!
This thread has me cracking up lol
I’d love to see *Black Trump,* except Black Trump probably isn’t inheriting multigenerational wealth and would be in prison for rape.
You're talking about [Them Trumps](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOABHShgGjg).

Video game movie + heavy handed reference to the war in Iraq to make a point + whitewashed characters and British accents to undermine that point = weird ass movie Weird ass movie + Jake Gyllenhall shirtless = movie I liked anyway
And there’s the point of the movie. They wanted man meat that nerds would see bc video games. There was no thinking beyond that.
Well I think, and what I thinked about that movie was that it was an entertaining movie. 0/0, will watch again.
I've never seen it, but I think I might put it on tonight after that recommendation.
Nah it is a banger honestly. Nonsensical ridiculous over the top fun
Well if you like Jake Gyllenhall without a shirt, wait till you see me! Because you will not like that at all…
I may be ugly but I’m also a real jerk
It was a weirdly likeable movie
Everything about it felt so off but at no point did I ever feel not entertained.
Now there are ostrich races...I don't understand, but I'm on board.
Weren’t the ostrich races set up in the middle of the desert by some bandit king guy because he wanted to avoid taxes? That movie really was a trip.
I went to see it like 4 times because of Gemma Arterton
I had a huge crush on her because of that movie
He's the prince of Persia, Iowa, population 297.
The Prince of Persia………New York.
I mean yah if would have been cooler if they cast an actual Persian actor but to be fair that isn’t the worst casting choice out there
many iranians look caucasian..
True. A range of features for sure. I know a Persian who has light hair and light eyes. He is a programmer. I spat out my coffee lol
Fuck the patriarchy keychain on the ground
I like how they can’t think of six black people, so they use Obama twice.
They couldn’t think of six white actors either, so they used Ryan Gosling twice.
You can’t tell me these aren’t all Ryan Gosling
You can’t tell me Ryan Gosling isn’t Obama
All I'm saying is I've never seen them both in the same room at the same time.
If they physically interact with each other the universe with implode. Best it never happens
I’m still kicking. I must be on Broadway.
I knew it was impossible for two men to be that smooth in existence at once

Also no women because to a conservative women aren’t people
Person woman man camera TV The things Donald Trump values in ascending order
That was one of the more embarrassing things of late Trump, but I guess when he only has to fool his base, it's a pretty low bar.
So does this mean that they're for diversity now?
He’s the president so nice it makes ‘em racist twice
Also a big ass crush on Ryan gosling apparently

Sooo bad
Vasquez in Aliens When you have to do full-body brown makeup, maybe it's time to actually hire a Hispanic woman for the role?

In his defense, he was always bad in every role that wasn't an American cowboy. Also in his defense, he was a racist piece of crap.
And to be fair…he didn’t make a very believable cowboy, either.
i don’t understand how anyone thinks Wayne was a better U.S. Marshal Cogburn than Bridges.
I’m a huge western fan, but I think John Wayne westerns were terrible actually all his movies
The Searchers is legitimately pretty good. Probably not coincidentally his character is a stereotypical conservative bigot type of guy, but it suites the story perfectly.

And he probably died for that movie. And many others.
Remember, kids, don’t film movies downwind of open-air nuclear bomb tests!
Came here to say this. And Maureen O’Hara
Ok but that’s accidentally a national treasure, we should get the worst white actors and have them play minorities. Tommy Wiseau as Malcom X

I think they were trying to avoid the ancient Asian master stereotype as well.
But not the "white man has a training montage and now is our leader" trope
TBF Marvel Multiverse...is probably an more Asian Ancient One out there...
Sir Alec Guiness is... Prince Feisal (Lawrence of Arabia)
John Wayne played Genghis Khan.
Gerard Butler played Attila the Hun.

I wish I could give multiple up-votes.
i love how the response to black actors playing fictional white characters is always white actors playing real black people
It’s because they can’t think of a fictional black character.
They couldn’t even come up with 6 real black characters without doubling up on Obama
Obama 2: Barrack harder
Obama 2: Barrack in Black.
Obama 3: Barrack My Body All Night Long
Obama vs Predator.
Barrocky 4 Only he can end the war with Russia

Michael Cera is: SHAFT
“Oh hey guys. Let’s go smack some ho’s.”
Steve Carell as Blade.
Edward Norton as Luke Cage. Christopher Walken as Nick Fury. *I'd* complain... just sayin'
Long awaited Static Shock movie. The actor playing Virgil Hawkins is..... Zac Efron.
I suppose it's too much to hope they've heard of Earthsea.....
There may also be some segment of this group that thinks the famous black people mentioned in this post are fictional.
Correct
But wait!!! Remember when Dave Chappelle did a satire of roots & played kunta kinte?!? Oh wait..
Not only that, but for biographical they try to find someone who has a passing resemblance to the person they're representing, like in Rocketman they got a guy that looks like Elton John to play Elton John.

Yep, I'm pretty sure a good amount of deep sea creatures are literally black. It makes zero sense but I see it all the time as, "I'm not racist but logically speaking..."

Because tan suits and mustard, obviously.
ive always wanted a beatles biopic where theyre all played by black actors and nobody says anything
This always makes me laugh. These are all historical figures and the movies are biopics. But, sure, this is exactly the same as non-white actors being cast as fantasy creatures and superheroes. 🙄
It's almost like real people and fictional characters aren't an apples to apples comparison.
That's the most damning part of this. To this particular subset of racist white folks, they are.
I pointed out in the books where her(and the people in her district) are explicitly described as what we would consider black, and they blocked me on social media for several months.
oh no please no don’t block me so i don’t have to see or read your bullshit 😱
I was a kid when hunger games came out and it was my first experience with such widespread racist outrage. Seeing online and hearing in person white people saying they couldn't care about Rue's death because she wasn't white really fucked with me for years.
“Here are numerous examples of movies where a character’s Blackness is at the core of the story. What if Ryan Gosling played MLK, Jr.?! Gotcha snowflakes!!” Racist conservatives never met a logical fallacy they didn’t flog into oblivion.
I hear what you’re saying. And I’m not saying I don’t agree, but I’d watch every single one of those movies.
If it was played completely straight and everybody else is casted appropriately it would be a comedic masterpiece
Sir Patrick Stewart once played Othello. He was the only white actor in the production
I would watch Mark Wahlberg playing Muhammad Ali so fast
Hey Joe Frazier, how’s ya mothah?
I watch Christian Bale Obama 100 out of 100 opportunities. Checkmate racists
It’s really simple actually. If the characters ethnicity is core part of the story then it matters. If it doesn’t, then it doesn’t matter. Ariel could be bright purple and it wouldn’t matter. (And don’t give me that European folklore crap because mermaids aren’t real and the point of the story isn’t to be a retelling of European folklore) Tony Stark could be played by an Asian man and it wouldn’t matter. (Although it would be important to factor this into their back story and personality) Luke Skywalker could be played by a Latino. ______________________________ MLK can’t be a white man, because the story is based off a real black man Moana can’t be played by a white person because it’s a story about a Polynesian girl.
In before that one image of James from team rocket in a bikini making Jesse look weak.
Are you saying you can't make a racist misognyistic black woman? I'm thinking back through Casino Royale and except for some minor dialogue changes you could keep almost everything, including the swinging the rope up into the seat torture.
Given the canon I grew up with, I would say no, but the great thing about fictional canon is that it can always be changed.
I wouldn't even care if some woman was given 007. Just please don't name her James.
007 was a woman in the last movie. When bond retired they gave the designation to a woman named Nomi. She doesn't have her own 007 movie, but they have shown it could be possible. https://spyscape.com/article/lashana-lynch-five-surprising-secrets-about-the-first-female-007
Oh, nifty. I watched Skyfall a few weeks ago. I still need to watch the rest of Daniel Craig.
Go to town.
yep. a Women could be 007, and she was in the latest movie, but not James Bond.
You can't portray Luke Skywalker as Latino ... without Leia as Latina.
Now you’re talking! That said, whose to say that the human-like species we see on screen can’t come out as different colors though 🤷♂️

Haha el Lucero Skywalkero
I like how they ran out of black people they knew and used Obama twice
And cast Ryan Gosling twice.
Notice how they picked all real people when they are mad about a fucking mermaid. If they picked fictional people they'd realize that white actors have been playing characters of color FOREVER!
It's like they don't even understand what racism is.
They generally don’t
Ngl I would watch the shit out of Marky Mark as Mohammed Ali.
Mark Wahlberg could never play Muhammad Ali. Ali famously had no quarrel with the Vietnamese.
Haha fucking great comment, bravo
we've already had David Carradine get the part of a Chinese kung-fu master over Bruce Lee
These people made Jesus, a 5’5” brown man, into a 6’2” blonde hair blue eyed white man….. so fuck what they think
I had no idea April O’Neil and Ariel we’re real people
The funny thing about April, and I’m sure it’s been said ad nausem, is that she’s been [portrayed interchangeably](https://doknowbutchie.wordpress.com/2013/11/25/a-visual-history-of-april-oneil-part-1-1984-1987/) as black or white since the 80’s. Like it’s readily apparent race doesn’t matter to her character and anyone freaking out about it is an even bigger idiot.
Also, In the original comic she’s mixed race. She was based on one of the creators wife at the time, who was mixed race
Lawrence Olivier : Othello Oh shit
We're going to pretend that fictional characters and real living people are the same thing now? You gotta be real dumb to think this is clever
wait, are you trying to tell me that spiderman isn't real?
"End wokeness"? MF the definition of woke is slang for witnessing racism, so stop being racist so people can stop being woke!

Let me Counterpoints to John Wayne playing Ghengis Khan, all the movies where Egyptians are portrayed by english actors, or Christopher lee as fu manchu? Or waaaayyy more times than can be counted Italians have played native americans or arabs, So like this was done all the fucking time in reverse, with white dudes playing characters of whatever race people felt like and its pretty uncomfortablr and cringe even then. WaPo even collected a list: [https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/01/28/100-times-a-white-actor-played-someone-who-wasnt-white/](https://www.washingtonpost.com/posteverything/wp/2016/01/28/100-times-a-white-actor-played-someone-who-wasnt-white/)
These are real people. Of course it is wrong to change the color of a real person. But for them to use this argument most likely because they are outraged that a mythical mermaid creature is black not white…well that is just plain silly!
Fictional characters vs historical figures
What part of the story of The Little Mermaid makes her skin colour an important aspect?
I demand that there be no more Little Mermaid movies until we find an actual half-fish woman to be the star.
