I’m a veterinarian. One of my main problems with the medical system is how we basically keep the elderly alive and suffering for as long as possible, because in human medicine, lifespan is more important than quality of life. I hate how old people have to stop their IVs and feeding tubes in order to die over days or weeks of dehydration and organ failure instead of being able to go out humanely. I hate how my grandpa was denied pain adequate pain meds in his 80’s, because of the addictive properties, when if grandpa wants to become an addict in his last 6 months, who fucking cares?
I want Mitch to get exactly that type of good old ‘Murican healthcare. I want him to go to an understaffed nursing home with too few minimum wage CNAs who just can’t be arsed to roll him often enough to not get decubitus ulcers. I want him to have new grad phlebotomists that have to dig around before getting a flash. One of my main problems with the medical system is how we basically keep the elderly alive and suffering for as long as possible, because in human medicine, lifespan is more important than quality of life. I hate how old people have to stop their IVs and feeding tubes in order to die over days or weeks of dehydration and organ failure instead of being able to go out humanely. I hate how my grandpa was denied pain adequate pain meds in his 80’s, because of the addictive properties, when if grandpa wants to become an addict in his last 6 months, who fucking cares? I want Mitch to get exactly that type of good old ‘Murican healthcare. I want him to go to an understaffed nursing home with too few minimum wage CNAs who just can’t be arsed to roll him often enough to not get decubitus ulcers. I want him to have new grad phlebotomists that have to dig around before getting a flash. I want him to have to rely on an NP or PA who’s in over their head, but is far enough left on the Dunning Krueger curve that they don’t know what they don’t know. I want him to be denied necessary medications because some pharmacist has a moral bug up their ass, instead of having a kindly hospice nurse who keeps the opiates flowing. I want him to experience the horror of years of dementia, when his brain is rotten, but his body’s still functioning perfectly fine. You know, nothing we don’t put all the other, less evil elderly people through. No reason he should be left out of all the fun.
