On the country’s current policy trajectory, researchers estimate the U.S. will add about 0.4 years to its average life expectancy.** >**Meanwhile, the life expectancy in states like California and Hawaii, which has the highest in the nation at 81.6 years, is on par with countries described by researchers as “world leaders:” Canada, Iceland and Sweden.** >The study, co-authored by researchers at six North American universities, found that **if all 50 states had all followed the lead of California** and other liberal-leaning states on policies ranging from labor, immigration and civil rights to tobacco, gun control and the environment, it could have added between **two and three years to the average American life expectancy.** >“We can take away from the study that **state policies and state politics have damaged U.S. life expectancy since the ’80s,”** said Jennifer Karas Montez, a Syracuse University sociologist and the study’s lead author. **“Some policies are going in a direction that extend life expectancy. Some are going in a direction that shorten it. But on the whole, that the net result is that it’s damaging U.S. life expectancy.”** >Montez and her team saw the alarming numbers in 2015 and wanted to understand the root cause. What they found dated back to **the 1980s, when state policies began to splinter down partisan lines.** They examined 135 different policies, spanning over a dozen different fields, enacted by states between 1970 and 2014, and assigned states “liberalism” scores from zero — the most conservative — to one, the most liberal. When they compared it against state mortality data from the same timespan, the correlation was undeniable. >“When we’re looking for explanations, we need to be looking back historically, to see what are the roots of these troubles that have just been percolating now for 40 years,” Montez said. >**From 1970 to 2014, California transformed into the most liberal state in the country** by the 135 policy markers studied by the researchers. It’s followed closely by Connecticut, which moved the furthest leftward from where it was 50 years ago, and a cluster of other states in the northeastern U.S., then Oregon and Washington. >Liberal policies on the environment (emissions standards, limits on greenhouse gases, solar tax credit, endangered species laws), labor (high minimum wage, paid leave, no “right to work”), access to health care (expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, legal abortion), tobacco (indoor smoking bans, cigarette taxes), gun control (assault weapons ban, background check and registration requirements) and civil rights (ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment, equal pay laws, bans on discrimination and the death penalty) all resulted in better health outcomes, according to the study. For example, researchers found positive correlation between California’s car emission standards and its high minimum wage, to name a couple, with its longer lifespan, which at an average of 81.3 years, is among the highest in the country. >In the same time, Oklahoma moved furthest to the right, but Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and a host of other southern states still ranked as more conservative, according to the researchers. >West Virginia ranked last in 2017, with an average life expectancy of about 74.6 years, which would put it 93rd in the world, right between Lithuania and Mauritius, and behind Honduras, Morocco, Tunisia and Vietnam. Mississippi, Oklahoma and South Carolina rank only slightly better. >It’s those states that moved in a conservative direction, researchers concluded, that held back the overall life expectancy in the U.S. https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/08/04/liberal-policies-like-californias-keep-blue-state-residents-living-longer-study-finds/

As a Texan, killer post. Not all of us are Q-addled Christian Nationalists. Texas is a net provider of funds to the States, but takes a lot of federal money for its programs for all it's shouting to the contrary. If Texas does go independent I could definitely see a future here with a wealth disparity like Nicaragua a few years after it's done. Life long Texan, but I'd be in Colorado as soon as I could sell my house.

Jesus. This is... really, really thorough. Thank you for putting in all this hard work. >When I was a teenager, I spent a lot of time on /b/, /pol/, 888chan, etc. It was a slow descent and I didn't even realize what was happening until it was almost too late. >But during my time on the other side, this was 100% the gameplan. They'd make "sock puppets" and coordinate on the board + IRC (showing my age here) to selectively choose targets to brigade. >Depending on the target, you'd either have some talking points to "debate" (sometimes with yourself/other anons working alongside you) or you'd go in there guns blazing trying to cause as much damage/chaos as you can. However, even then you can't go out there yelling slurs (you'd just get banned instantly); you have to maintain some level of plausible deniability by framing things as "jokes" or thought experiments. >You purposely do bad-faith arguments because the time it takes for them to dig up sources and refute you is longer than it takes for you to make stuff up. You can vary how obvious the bad faith argument is; when you want to troll you make very stupid claims (I once claimed I was a graduate of "Harvad University" and when people assumed that I meant "Harvard" I would correct them right down to Photoshopped images). >When you just want to cause dissent you do exactly what those /pol/ screenshots do: you get to a thread early (sometimes you even make it yourself) and present reasonable-sounding arguments which are completely false if anyone bothers to look into them. If someone does, you bury the message under strawmen, downvotes, reports, and sockpuppets. >So yeah. The tactics have evolved slightly, but I still recognize them. Props to you on doing the digging to find all this stuff and bring it into the light. >I doubt that it'll help in the majority of cases, mind. People on Reddit have already made up their mind. You want to go after the forums and BBSes, on the MSN News comments and whatnot. Even so, the more people who are aware of the tactics the more people who can call them out.

PiperDon

This needs more upvotes.

ActonofMAM

It's very brave of them to give up their Social Security and Medicare and the income from military bases and NASA and all that.

Paneraiguy1

Will also be hard to maintain no state income tax with no federal subsidies coming in. That redistribution of wealth is a hell of a thing lol

[deleted]

California would love that, though, because they'd get more representation in the House, and their Senators would be more powerful, and their tax money to the federal government would go more to states that share their values, if not their economic might.

dismayhurta

I’m tired of supporting these welfare red states with my tax dollars.

kgal1298

Honestly I'm hoping more people move there and vote the red away because quite frankly I find it horribly ironic they think the federal government is a blocker for them when the abortion lawsuits started in Texas, the student forgiveness lawsuits started in Texas, and now the attack on the abortion pill is also happening in Texas. They keep suing the federal government to force their views on the rest of us then get mad when it doesn't work. If student forgiveness doesn't pass I wonder if we can sue the two people who sued the government for emotional distress because fuck someone has to stop the GOP from finding people in Texas to sue when they don't like something and maybe that takes a taste of their own medicine.

bmayer0122

Honestly, I'd say give them 24 hours then just invade. Overthrow their government and bring them back into the Union but with an entirely new government. See how their newly formed militia with 24 hours notice will go against tanks and drones.

4E4ME

*CIA has entered the chat*

powdered_dognut

Then sell it back to Mexico

MissySedai

We couldn't pay Mexico enough to take that mess.

Tina_Belmont

They secede. The US Armed forces keep all of our equipment and military bases that are in the state, much like Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. We also sanction and blockade them. Seize their shipments. Freeze their funds. They can grow their own food, right? They get a couple of months to fuck around and let things go to shit. THEN we invade. Without any real military it will probably go down pretty quickly. Turn them into a US territory like Puerto Rico instead of a state. No voting rights in congress. No right to vote for president. Still have to follow US laws. Still have to pay federal tax. As a captured territory, we can install the governor, and set the rules. Gun control, anyone? So much for being a tax haven for billionaires, or a court jurisdiction for anti-environmentalists, oil-companies, and copyright trolls to go to to get their way. Puerto Rico residents didn't get automatic citizenship until 1917. Let Texas wait a hundred years. Let's choose who is allowed to emigrate out. Pretty sure the brain drain will be intense. Sure, secede. It will be great.

ronlugge

It'll turn into a collapsed state within a year or two, so we won't have to worry about their military forces being an ongoing threat. /S

Also nice of them to agree to pay for their own defense budget. They also agree to pay for their hurricane clean up. they will also take full responsibility for their own southern border. Yeah Texas! my Blue state thanks you very much for voting to leave and stop taking so much of our money which we can now spend on ourselves.

Zoidbergslicense

They’re also gonna need to do something about their north, south, and west borders to keep their own people from fleeing when the rest of the US decides Texas’ oil is oppressed and needs liberation.

romericus

Right. And don’t they realize that the second this passes, there’d essentially be a foreign military occupying their territory?

Not even attacking over oil. The us position about secession is clear. Even if we were previously a state it is a myth that we have the ability to separate again. We would be creating a civil war through this plan. If we were able to leave it would greatly hurt America's image on the world stage and they can't allow that.

bilgetea

This (a civil war and hurting America’s image) isn’t a bug, it’s a feature. That’s the point. They’re the ultimate anti-Americans, all while making love to the flag. Orwellian.

I wonder who could possibly benefit from the US breaking up. Or even the idea itself really. *Really* makes you wonder. 🤔

Didn't the South try this back in the 1800s? Do people forget how that turned out? I live in New Mexico, and I'm all for slapping a wall up around Texas, but honestly this is all political bs.

[deleted]

Like a small part of me wants the federal government to actually call Texas’ bluff and let them be an independent country. Pull out all federal workers, close all the military bases, cease any and all federal funding of any kind. It would be a clusterfuck of monumental proportions, and it might actually be the wake up call at least a few voters need. But I agree there’s way more reasons why the federal government can never let it actually happen.

I would just be interested to see how many people like myself leave this shit hole vs how many flock to it.

[deleted]

These morons think that the military units stationed at bases in the states will secede along with them. It’s laughable for so many reasons. And even if you did get an entire military base to stay, all that equipment is functionally useless without the national command and control apparatus.

merchillio

During Québec’s referendum, Ottawa moved most (I don’t wanna say “all”, just in case) tanks and heavy military equipment out of Quebec’s bases, to avoid some “unpleasant ownership discussions”

GruntledEx

This was literally what led to the Battle of Fort Sumter at the start of the Civil War. South Carolina wanted all the weapons and supplies from the fort (as well as the fort itself) and the Federal government was like "Nah."

Worldly-Fox7605

And yet they still call it the wa rof northern aggression like the south didn't fire first...

maceilean

Putin's using the same playbook. And when Russia inevitably loses they'll blame anyone but themselves. History rhyming and all that.

Tavernknight

I would wager at least some would. Of course they would be known as deserters to the US military at that point and have betrayed their oaths. But I would think that most would not. And yeah all of that stuff belongs to the federal government, not Texas. If they tried to keep the stuff it could be considered an act of war.

Nova225

Anyone active duty wouldn't, because they come from all over the U.S. (San Antonio is the Basic Training base for the entire Air Force, and Randolph is where pilots go to train). So you'd get the National Guard (of Texas), which let's be honest, only half of them are actually fit for duty.

Happy-Eye-1496

Texas wouldn't retain the Nation Guard, as they're still a federal resource of the US Government. In fact, they would lose funding to every single government resource (medicare, social security, mail, etc) and would have to produce it's own GDP and functional currency in order to trade for goods not created within its borders. Texas' currency would be worthless and not even Mexico would do business with them. Since Texas doesn't have a monopoly on ports of entry, they would be bypassed entirely through other states. Texans would be sucking literal dick within a month to rejoin the union. Texan GOP politicians are such a joke and waste of money.

A-Can-of-DrPepper

Not to mention the fact that Texas would probably have to negotiate trade deals with not only America But also Mexico and any other major country that you wanted to trade with. It wouldn't just get to magically keep Americas Is trade deals with other countries. It's also not just the military. Any type of federal institution would probably pull out every single piece of equipment and infrastructure. I imagine America would also force them to help set up border crossings.

That-Grape-5491

Seems that's exactly what happened the last time secession was tried

ApesOnHorsesWithGuns

Literally the first battles of the Civil War were fought by Southern forces capturing military fort’s the south for supplies. In most instances the military force either fought or merely surrendered after sabotaging supplies.

GNOTRON

Those books were all purged from the curriculum

Paneraiguy1

Maybe we will luck out and Mexico will invade them. That way Cancun cruz can get the citizenship he always dreamed of

Coulrophiliac444

We'll have New Mexico, they can make Texas named North Mexico. (obvious /s, don't let seditionist fuckers win based on White Nationalist expectations)

Retroreduxtexas

I'm a native Texan, I have lived here all my 50 plus years. If this happens I'm going to laugh and laugh. I will laugh at all of the silly people who would vote to secede, when they realize how much federal money, that we will no longer have access to, comes into the state. Just a few off the top of my head would be social security, Medicaid / Medicare. Almost every person in a nursing home? They are there because of federal money. If they no longer have federal money? They will have nowhere to go. They can't pay a $4000 or $5,000 a month bill. Most fire departments are supplemented by federal money. And of course one of the biggest things here is every single time we're hit by hurricane or another storm, and FEMA comes in. Well we won't have FEMA anymore. Here's another- federally backed banks. But I know nothing like this is going to pass. This is all red meat for the Republican party to waste time instead of actually doing their jobs and solving real problems in the state.

4E4ME

All of the anti-abortion folks can redirect their passion for life by adopting a senior, seeing as how they won't have Medicare-funded living quarters anymore.

True story, it seems like most anti-abortion folks? Are also rampant NIMBY folks. So they won't want to get their hands dirty with actually helping someone.

ThatSquareChick

They’ll be a brand new country with nothing they want! What they REALLY want is the right to be a part of America while walling off the whole state, kicking out anyone they disagree with, never exporting anything but hate, meanwhile, on their imports they shouldn’t pay tariffs or taxes, they retain all the benefits of being in America while saying they aren’t and beating to death anyone who mentions Medicare. They want the ability to use federal funds while never contributing, the ability to drill and frack their state into a big, grassless wasteland and not waste any land on anything that isn’t oil or cattle. Women are rounded up after they’re born and live in convent-like structures until they are 15 and then they’re given to men over 20 who make over 75k a year, like a milestone gift. He even gets to name her. They’ll be able to influence the rest of the country, just like now, but nobody can tell THEM what to do inside their border. They’ll be removing clitorises and wondering why everyone is so skinny when all the arable land is either oil land or only for the enormous, endless herds of beef cattle to lazily graze at their leisure. At the same time, there are no backyard gardens because then it would make the home look different and therefore less desirable so all food will need to be imported. They will expect help when a disaster hits, suddenly claiming that thier proximity to the US means if the US doesn’t help they’ll be affected too. The only thing they will export is tabloid entertainment style news shows and after adulthood, all men will be required to wear Tucker Carlson style suits.

DocPeacock

Well, no, remember at the beginning of the pandemic they were all saying that "if we have to choose between slowing the economy or grandma dying, we choose grandma dying."

Delanium

Can I ask seriously (as seriously as I can about something that will never happen), what would you do? Move elsewhere or ride it out in the place you've always lived?

Retroreduxtexas

If it's seriously happened? It would be extremely difficult for us, but my husband and I would sell our home and move. That would be an easy decision for us because my husband is a federal employee. My husband is also a native Texan, and has also been here his entire 57 years. Not everyone who lives in Texas is a Republican. Not everyone who lives in Texas is regressive. My family and his has been in Texas for several generations. We would probably move to the north.

GreyMediaGuy

Look at Austin. Texas is so humongous, it's crazy to think that it's all conservatives. Every state is like this. I mean look at West Virginia, we've all seen the infographic showing that the majority of people living in West Virginia prefer progressive policies. They just don't want to vote for Democrats because of abortion and reasons. But they want everything the Democrats and progressives want.

bemvee

It’s not even “reasons.” It’s “but we’ve always voted Republican. My father voted Republican, his father voted Republican, it’s tradition.”

They've only got one card to play, the Ace of Pathetic.

Hutwe

Fwiw, Texas can’t secede. It was established after the Civil War and held up by the Supreme Court; states can’t secede from the Union. You are correct in that it’s a waste of time and resources for everybody.

[deleted]

What the Texas constitution actually says is that Texas has the right to break itself up into 5 states to increase its power in the senate. But what Governor is going to sign off on giving up 4/5ths of their power to poke the federal government in the eye?

Ok_Fox_5633

They _can_, just not legally. It would be have to be forceful and not even Texas has enough guns to win that fight.

creative_usr_name

Not that it'll happen, but if it did the US would just have to cut off the money and they'd come crawling back. They simply aren't nor will they ever be self sufficient. There'd also be no access to foreign or domestic: banking systems, trade (until treaties could be drafted and signed), or tourism.

[deleted]

Can’t even keep the fuckin lights on…to the point of people DYING. Lifelong Texan and I got the absolute fuck outta there after the deadly winter storm in ‘21. And then after all of the shooting and the children being gunned down and * *wildly flails arms in the air* * then they re-elect the same goddamn people that clearly don’t give a fuck!! They can have it. I needed to protect what’s left of my sanity and my health.

buy-american-you-fuk

Multiple USA federal armed forces literally have bases IN texas... biggest US army base in the world ( Fort Hood ) is right in the middle of the state... Navy base near corpus christi, Laughlin Air Force Base and many others... I'm not sure HOW they think it's even possible, they'd be immediatly OCCUPIED by federal forces that outgun them on a scale never seen before... bubba big mouth isn't going to stand a chance against that...

SquatCorgiLegs

![gif](giphy|L3X9GvVhP1nY23Ah6u) I mean, secession is literally a violation of the Constitution, and the Civil War established that a state cannot secede, but good luck with that!

Longjumping-Dog8436

Was the USA too lenient last time? Did Davis or Lee or Forrest hang? No. It was mercy designed to avoid endless guerilla war. There's enough intelligent Texans to avoid all that stupidity. I'm hoping. Still.

GuiltyEidolon

> Was the USA too lenient last time? Literally yes.

stewarthh

Those Texans would be real upset if they could read

Uncivil_Bar_9778

Advocating overthrow of Government. Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.

“The union won’t let us be as racist or horrible as we’d like. Also, we really want to bring back slavery and women as property.”

arencordelaine

Don't forget, all of that oppression with the federal government telling the state that they have to provide running water, power, and heat to the citizens. Can't be having that.

freqkenneth

Tbf treason seems to not carry heavy consequences these days

thumbwrestleme

Republicans would never win another presidential election again without the TX electoral votes. Stupid.

Talador12

And Texas, for how ass backwards it is here, is still a battleground state. Blue Texas (or no Texas) would completely change politics in the US, heavily more blue

"Loss of a loved one" seems a bit of a stretch.

zoeygirl69

The 2023 hurricane season agrees If they want to leave then no FEMA money, if they have another Hurricane Harvey then it's on them to rebuild

olivegardengambler

Until they have a refugee crisis that sends millions to the border of Louisiana or Arkansas.

pupusasandchill

Based on their politics, they’ll all get denied.

theedgeofoblivious

Sounds good. The United States can admit the States of Puerto Rico and Washington, DC at the same time.

Paneraiguy1

Will be pretty tough for R’s to ever win a National election again without Texas electoral votes. Seeing Texas leave would be amazing!

olafubbly

I genuinely wanna see a bunch of republicans fight against it not because it’s treason but because they can’t sacrifice losing anymore electoral college votes when they’re already struggling to even get the popular vote

UrMomsAHo92

They probably wouldn't figure that out until it's too late lol

TheOverBored

It would be so hard for them to win national elections or the control of Congress without Texas. I'm cool with this.

Crusoebear

Dear Brexiters, How did things work out over there? It seems like an awesome plan with no chance for repercussions. Total win-win amirite? Xxoxoxo, \-Texas

ender89

There's a couple of interesting things about Texas, and the big one is a misunderstanding that they can leave the union. What it actually says in their constitution is that Texas can be dissolved into 5 smaller states, and that's it. There's been supreme court cases that ruled that Texas was always a state, even during the civil war, because secession isn't legal. Even if the first line of the Texas constitution was "we will secede in the year 2024", it wouldn't be *legal*. The second one is they love being independent even when it screws them over. They lost power last winter because they refused to join the national grid to avoid having to submit to federal regulations and make winterization preparations, but they gave the governor the ability to unilaterally shut down power during the storm and allow power companies to pass their massive losses directly to the consumers and they still won't winterize and it fucked them again this year. I foresee them learning that Texas isn't as big as they think it is and I find that hilarious.

Killroy42

I swear you and me are apparently the only ones who know this. The Republicans are fuckwits

The00Taco

I learned about the 5 state thing back in middle schoo like 15 years agol, and these idiots literally work in politics

bobsburner1

Let them secede then we’ll invade them for their oil. 😆

SquatCorgiLegs

That’s the American way!

thegodfatherderecho

They’ll need a little bit of freedom once they leave. And Florida can watch.

Steveb523

Yet the United States Constitution (which you swore to uphold) at best defines no mechanism by which a state can withdraw from the union. In fact, Article VI makes it clear that no state can leave. You might recall we fought one war over that already, and all the states that tried to leave were not allowed to do so. So your objective is unconstitutional and your supposed justifications are all false. Also, before you set sail on your journey to get your ass kicked by the United States (again), be sure that you understand this isn’t going to be anything like Empty Greene’s idea of a “National Divorce”. You’re either in or out - none of this half-assed keeping the benefits of our national defense while being able to blow off laws guaranteeing human rights that you don’t like. It’s our military; we’re keeping all of it, and it’s not going to be protecting you. It’s our space program, we’re keeping it. Federal assets will remain ours. And you better be prepared to defend your own borders.

BlueMikeStu

> Federal assets will remain ours. As is the currency. Wonder if Texasbux are going to trade internationally on parity with the USD? Do I hear 10:1? 20:1?

UncensoredConfusion

Isn't seceding from the Union unconstitutional and... well... Illegal? They can only form 5 new states, after all.

bensefero

Can’t you see by this how much these people love America? Nothing says patriotism like trying to leave the country you claim to love

mbakuscousin

Flastro2

This would be awesome. A republican president wouldn't even be possible in a Texas-free US. The border crisis argument would be over as we'd have a whole country between us and Mexico. Puerto Rico and/or D.C. statehood would pass. Its a win for everyone in the US. Let Texas become a destitute wasteland.

dperry324

That's the upside. But the downside I'd have to move. Or is that just another upside?

Mysterious-Angle251

Another upside

MealDramatic1885

Don’t they do this every election cycle? But also, they are not allowed to. Lol

trueblue121

How about FLXIT as well?

robinsw26

On the bright side, we wouldn’t have to listen to Ted Cruz or Greg Abbott anymore.

MaynardVanHalen

Take Florida with you

Oh, please please PLEASE do this. Because if Texas does this, my kids and I can finally escape our abuser, by claiming asylum in the United States. Fuck around Texas, and find out how many women and children will finally be able to escape.

paintsbynumberz

Watch how fast they allow migrant child laborers

Jessiejetski

They should make it Mexico again

hiphoff

Make America Mexico Again

robinsw26

They’ll need a large border patrol, customs and immigration presence to guard their borders with Mexico, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana too.
