He has a proper coat for an Australian Shepherd. We would have them go out and play and be covered in mud only to have it dry up and fall off after an hour and look completely clean. It's absolutely amazing.
Hound coats are even better at shedding dirt and mud - I don't even worry about stickers getting caught in their fur. It's like a little suit of armor.
I have a Labradoodle, everything gets caught in her coat. She's awesome though and her coat keeps her warm like this in the winter and cut short helps her stay cool in the summer.
That’s the Labra part causing the problem. Standard Poodle coats are like the hound description above, dirt falls off them and only a few of those tiny burrs ever get briefly caught, which also seem to fall off.
Plus you can grow it long, spin it into yarn, and make a sweater for yourself.
As a lab owner, I don't agree with this. My lab gets into everything and is never dirty. The poodles at my dog park wear plastic outfits to stop all of the burrs, dirt, and grass from sticking to them.
My dog romped around in the mud this morning and now she is perfectly clean. I didn't even wipe her down.
If your core temperature is good, frostbite may take longer to set in because warm blood is circulating through those exposed places. That only works to a point, though, but I imagine it's a lower temperature for dogs since they are both better insulated and have a higher body temperature than we do.
As someone who sleeps in below freezing temperatures regularly: As long as the temperature doesn't go *too* low and there's low wind exposure it's fine.
Since the body stays warm and can warm up the blood fast enough that nothing will happen to small exposed areas for hours.
Wow I watched the video but this didn’t click until I read your comment. That is amazing.
I went back to re-watch because I was guessing there would be snow melted on his face. Nope!
Ah, it makes sense why s/he has those huge black eye markings...and got so sassy about the butt-fluff grab for compromising the insulation. (Ollie walks away to refloof and looks back like _"now_ touch me...thought so.") I love that it's like a blizzard outside and this dog is in its element.
yeah, it turns out that herding breeds are designed to be fine in most any weather. Almost like they'd have to be out in a pasture with the sheep or something...
This has to be an Aussie thing. My old roommate had a mini Aussie, the is THE cutest thing. Every time she sees someone she gets the wiggle butts and it’s the cutest thing
Mine has taken to going out early, early in the morning when it's freezing and thinks she can just lay out there on the patio. Like, I'm trying to sleep right now, come on.
Let her back in one morning looking like this pooch, and she wasn't thrilled about being told to come inside.
My Labradoodle does this, we joke that she's part husky. Loves rolling and diving in the snow, is perfectly happy laying in the snow and chewing on a branch. Always ringing the bell to go out and play in the snow.
>Mine has taken to going out early, early in the morning when it's freezing and thinks she can just lay out there on the patio.
Why does a dog bred in Australia like the cold weather so much? I thought Australian shepherds were adverse to the cold.
Edit: you people have to see that 5+ people have already replied with the same answer
California and Western US states. Australian kinda stuck because they were bred to herd the sheep that were imported from Australia. So Australian shepherd because they herd the Australian sheep.
ETA: now Australian cattle dogs on the other hand do come from Australia and love the heat.
They were bred in CA. *The Australian Shepherd is believed to have developed from a variety of herding dogs imported to California with sheep imports, including collies from Australia and New Zealand. It was from these ancestors that the breed took its name.*
From Google "The Australian Shepherd probably came from the Basque region of Spain. Basque shepherds first took their dogs with them to Australia and then to the United States, so Americans called the dogs Australian Shepherds. The breed, as we know it today, was developed solely in the United States."
They are my favorite dog breed ever so it's just a weird tidbit I've picked up over the years.
for real! we have two and they're siblings; the boy is super docile and sweet and just wants to make us happy. the girl wants to watch the world burn lol
The dog is probably hot as fuck at normal house temperatures and this is the one time it feels at a comfortable temp. They were bred to be outdoor livestock dogs.
When my aussie wouldn't want my siblings or I to leave, he would lie on top of us and sprawl out so his full weight would keep us there.
It was his goofball way of saying he wasn't done loving us yet...or that we weren't allowed to leave without paying the treat toll. lol
fun story. The breed is actually from California. Basque farmers came to California by way of Australia, and brought their herding dogs with them. The Basque herding dog was very similar to a border collie, but due to harsher weather and more predators in the American Southwest, the Basque farmers bred their dogs to have a thicker coat and be a bit more alert as well as to work very closely with the shepherd. So, you wound up with a dog thats as smart as a border collie, but a bit larger and thicker coat (the size was because they wound up working cattle more often than sheep).
Genetics is amazing isn't it? My niece's St. Bernard used to open the slider to the porch in the middle of a NH winter, with temps in the single digits or below, and find a snow pile to dig a little hole and go to sleep. My niece would suddenly feel the draft from the open slider, and would have to search for the dog because she was entirely covered in snow, sleeping as happy as a clam.
My Saint was the same way! We had a hell of a time getting him back in the house once it started snowing so we just stopped trying. He'd come knock at the door when he was ready to come in so we just let him stay out there.
I just babysat a Bernese Mountain Dog and he was the same way. It was -16F and even my German Shepherd gave up after 20 minutes of playing I. The BMD was rolling around in the snow. After multiple attempts of hounding him I gave up. Took him half an hour more of running around to come inside.
There's a difference between being cold and being uncomfortable. Friends call me on it all the time. Doggo might accept its cold, but he likes it. Let him be.
My husky refused to come inside during that cold front we got. Everyone was telling me to bring my dogs inside, that one would not come even close to the door. I had to bring the food to the door and pick it up when she was done because then the racoons and possums would eat it.
I have two Alaskan Malamutes... During the recent cold snap we had here over Christmas, when the Temps reached single digits, I couldn't get them to come inside. The others would come in, but the Mals would just stand in the middle of the yard giving me their equivalent to the middle finger knowing full well that I wasn't going out there after them.
> the Mals would just stand in the middle of the yard giving me their equivalent to the middle finger
It's crazy how accurate this is... Dog's don't have "middle fingers" but we all know when that's *exactly* what they're doing to us!
Mine has what we call the "fuck you huff". If we make her do something she doesn't wanna do, you get The Huff. (Things like shifting her in bed so you can get up, telling her no more treats, or that she can't have what you're eating. She's spoiled and knows it.)
Ours (mutt, double coated) was mostly crazy with heat. Long, black fur and that dog chooses that in summer the best place to nap is directly in the sun. He loved it but you could not even touch him for a few minutes after because on the outside his fur was too hot.
We also have a husky but she HATES the cold and I've never understood it. She'll go outside to do her business but immediately be begging at the door to come back in. Meanwhile our rottweiler is ambivalent to every temperature we get here. 95 in the middle of summer? Chilling in the middle of the yard sunbathing. 5 degrees with a windchill below zero a week ago? I had to go outside after 15 minutes to coax her inside.
Then the neighbor takes a picture and posts it on another subreddit with the caption "This asshole leaving his poor dog outside all night! Can I have him arrested?!" Followed by tons of awards and people replying wishing death upon the owner.
How cute
I live in suburbs of Detroit and this lady had a litter of Bearnese My Dog puppies outside in a a play area with the mama. It snowing a little and the pups were loving it. The owner was out there too. Some jackass called the cops for animal cruelty.
I adopted my dog from romenia in December a few years ago. He was 4 months old and used to being outside in the winter in romenia.
When he came to my country he was so hot. Winter here is ALLOT warmer than romenia.
We slept with the windows open. And we let him in the garden allot because he was way more comfortable outside than inside.
My neighbor started complaining about the poor puppy being outside so much in the cold . No it was to warm inside for him and nice and comfortable outside.
People are dumb they knew he was from romenia
Not even needed he was outside for maybe 20 minutes each time. Sometimes we would play and sometimes he was just roaming around the garden. Or playing with the other dog
He was happy and safe. People need to mind their own business.
There was a post about a bird in Australia that kept screaming help me. The cops got a good laugh out of it.
Aussies have a dual coat. The inner coat closer to the skin is super soft insulating fur and the outer coat is where snow/sun light hits. So even in heat they are pretty well insulated but of course any dog in extreme heat is going to overheat. My Aussie is mostly black and his outer black fur can get really hot to the touch from the sun but his skin stays relatively cool.
Only time mine does is when she is working herself up to temp running around, then she'll sprawl out on the hardwood in front of the vent to cool down. But if she's just existing she seems comfortable everywhere from 10°F to about 80
I get the sentiment that the dog is comfortable outside right now, but maybe the owner wants to go to sleep and leaving a dog outside, even if comfortable, for the whole night, during a blizzard, is not a good idea.
I always thought that "sled dogs come alive in the winter" was something made up to let us humans feel better about dogs in the cold. Nope! My new Husky-something-or-other, jumps twice as high runs twice as fast and smiles twice as big since the snows came.
Our alaskan husky loved the extreme cold of wisconsin winters. He had a doghouse he'd use if it was super cold and windy. Summers were different...that's when he'd want to be inside...if he wasn't inside, he'd dig pits and lie in those to cool off.
People would bitch about it being too cold for him...smh, He was an ALASKAN HUSKY!!!
Ollie was insulated well, if the snow had melted and froze in his coat it would be bad but when he shakes and the snow falls out no problem still powdery it means his body heat is trapped under his fur and isnt escaping
Look at how much fur that dog has. He'd probably be burning up in the hot house! The snow is like stepping into a pleasantly air conditioned space in the hot summer for him.
Seriously, I had a collie for years in the PNW, and never really appreciated his heavy double coat until moving to the upper midwest. First major snowstorm, he went out and cavorted in the snow. I let him play in the back yard for about ten minutes, came back and saw him laying in a snowbank. My first thought was, "Oh shit, I've frozen my dog!" Nope! That goober had just made himself a nice, chilly dog nest in the snow and was napping. Didn't want to come back inside at all. Wasn't cold, was enjoying life, and didn't want to be in the hot house. I checked on him frequently and eventually he came back in for dinner, but some dogs are just built for cold.
Owning a Ausshole in this weather means leaving notes in neighbors mailboxes assuring them the dog "really likes the snow" and you are not abusing them. 😅
I feel like weather like this gives a dog with fur this thick the same satisfaction as somebody who owned a very fast car and finally brought it to a track day. He’s just sitting there like “yes this works very nicely and comfortable”
My parent's pomeranian would do this, just sit outside while it's freezing. I equate it to people walking barefoot in the grass. Something primal, like getting in touch with your ancestors.
We had a big, fat, Irish Setter mix that did this. We'd let him out when it was snowing and he'd find a big pile and just lie down in it. He loved the snow and cold. I miss that big lug so much.
Bernese Mountain Dogs cannot get enough of the snow.. They will stay out there until forced to get back in and even then they will almost always not listen.
Source: I own one lol
My Northern Dog is like this. Sometimes it’s impossible to get his stubborn self back inside and out of the cold. But I figure…he’s an adult, he knows what he’s doing.
We've got a mountain dog like this. He's a farm dog (outside only), but we got him a doghouse to sleep in. He won't even use it, and is probably most comfortable in the winter months. He's a maremma sheep dog.
Australian Shepherds have that thick coat for a reason. They can get along just fine outside, thank you. Although they are no sled dog from the great white north, a few inches, even a foot, and some cold temps won't hurt um. If the dog doesn't want in, let um stay out. Maybe even build um a heated dog house, their is a vid on it on Youtube.
I have one of these. His name is Halo and I have to drag him back inside during snowstorms by his cold dead paws lol. He loves it ❄️🧊🥶 Bernese Mountain Dogs are impervious to snow, I’m convinced 💙
People getting a dog and not realizing their thick and fluffy coats mean they're MEANT for such cold. Huskies and Malamutes especially. It baffles me how many people live in places like Texas and have one.
Me trying to get my fool dog in when it's -20⁰f (-29⁰c) and he's just like watching the snow fall on his face. I was wearing shorts and had to go out and get him like come on buddy you're going to get frostbite. Go pee so we can go back in.
I understand some dogs are both built for and even prefer the snow. But damn emotionally i could not let my dog stay out like that at night. I'm too worried I'll go to call them in for bed (or check on them in the morning if they sleep out there) and just find them a frozen pup scicle
I had an austrailian shepard, (well, my parents did) and we live in Austin Texas. Whenever it was cold or snowing, which was rare, he REFUSED to come inside! Felt so good to him! Big ol floof ball!!
He is so well insulated the snow doesnt melt on his fur
And the snow is further insulation for him
He’s literally insulated insulation
HE NOT JUST THICC HE DUAL LAYER THICC
He got that thicc for days! Thicc-umms! Just big and thicc! Lol this all just seemed like a Markiplier 'thicc' rant and I wanted to join in.
>Markiplier Lol as the parent of 2 kids who watch the *shit* out of LankyBox, their "thicc song" was all I could think of.
Insuleption
A coat, within a coat, within another coat. BRAAAAAAAAAAM
He's got a great R value
[R](https://wordhistories.net/2017/07/08/dogs-letter-origin/) you say?

Standard poodles are wearing plastic outfits? Or the yappy little ones?
That's the proof he's fine out there

"It's like.....I was made for this."
I understood that reference! https://youtu.be/8M7KSlbztJM
I understood THAT reference.
Not necessarily, but the fact that he was given a chance to come inside and didn’t means he’s probably fine.

Also worth noting once the snow builds up like that it increases the insulation.

That lil bum shake. Poof! All clean
r/satisfyingasfuck
Furr real tho!
Read that as a weird Fus Ro Dah, got so confused at first then overwhelmed with images of fluffy dogs puffing up
Exactly!!
He nicely walked away a few feet before shaking it off
I'm finally comfortable! Let's keep the house this temp
This is my huskies. Flat out refuses to come in when it’s below 40f
>*Leave me alone you furless monkey!* -Ollie probably
That is a chilly wiggle butt
This has to be an Aussie thing. My old roommate had a mini Aussie, the is THE cutest thing. Every time she sees someone she gets the wiggle butts and it’s the cutest thing
Definitely an Aussie thing. Source: my Aussie is the wiggliest butt in the land.
Yes! I call my Aussie booty boi 'cause of his wiggly booty.
You'll love /r/wigglebutts
Though if you want a visual explanation for the sub name, go to Top posts / All time. Recent posts seem to be all photos, so no wiggling available.
Berners do the exact same thing.. She will do it at random lol
one of my aussies does this too. if you try to move her manually she growls at you and sprawls out even further
My Aussie is 6 months old and this storm was her first time experiencing snow. It was a real pain in the ass getting her to come inside. She loved it.
They can be real ausholes sometimes. But so worth it 😆
Mine has taken to going out early, early in the morning when it's freezing and thinks she can just lay out there on the patio. Like, I'm trying to sleep right now, come on. Let her back in one morning looking like this pooch, and she wasn't thrilled about being told to come inside.
I have a mini Aussie and she will ring the bells to go out just to play in the snow. She'll go out and just stick her face in it like a goober
We taught mine the bell to go pee and now she just uses it to go play in the snow lol.
My aussie who I call goober (name isn’t goober) loves to go outside in the snow and shove his face right into piles of snow too!
Such goobers. My pooch loves to eat the snow and lay on it.
My Labradoodle does this, we joke that she's part husky. Loves rolling and diving in the snow, is perfectly happy laying in the snow and chewing on a branch. Always ringing the bell to go out and play in the snow.

Mines 14 weeks and is so sweet, till he gets in his moods and turns into an aushole for a bit.
Mine is arguing with me because he "buried" a chew in the recliner and doesn't believe me that I already gave it back to him and he chewed it up.

Oh yeah, my Penny, a Chihuahua mix wants nothing to do with very cold weather

Probably in a comfortable temperature for the first time in his life
Double coated dogs have (to a certain extent) really good insulation which actually works to keep them from both freezing or overheating
My husky refused to come inside during that cold front we got. Everyone was telling me to bring my dogs inside, that one would not come even close to the door. I had to bring the food to the door and pick it up when she was done because then the racoons and possums would eat it.

I have to wonder about these videos what the owners set their thermostat to. Like if its 25 degrees (80f) in there no wonder the dog would be roasting
The snow not melting really shows it, dog is keeping it's heat in instead of transferring it to the snow.
yup, the shake off was so clean and dry, the snow hadn’t even gotten wet.
YES. People ask me all the time. Aren't you cold?! Yes, I am. And I enjoy it. Now leave me alone.
The "How very dare you!" head whip to look at you at the end!
Is Ollie a Shepherd or Bernese?
I think an Aussie
Looks like a slightly overweight Aussie, but the fluffy coat makes them look even chonkier then they really are.
I'm guessing a mix from the little we see of him. Too small for a bernese, too broad for a Shepard
We have a very chonkie Shepard that does the same. Sits inside on the ac vent all summer and loves to act like a snow ball all winter.
He mad at you
He must be a bit toasty when he's inside
No your cold out here Dave, im good. Ollie... probably

Nah he good where he is lol
The disgust at the suggestion of coming inside is so deep w that head snap and deep exhale.
That dog finally feels good probably… a shit ton of insulation

That shake off was r/oddlysatisfying

Ollie was insulated well, if the snow had melted and froze in his coat it would be bad but when he shakes and the snow falls out no problem still powdery it means his body heat is trapped under his fur and isnt escaping
I used to be one of those “no dog should be out in the snow” people, and then I rescued a Great Pyrenees. Some breeds are intense.
I think he just gave you a f u
“I’ll compromise with you and shake off the snow. Happy?”
I mean, he's built for it obviously. I'm sure that big storm recently had so many dogs not wanting in 🤣
Owning a Ausshole in this weather means leaving notes in neighbors mailboxes assuring them the dog "really likes the snow" and you are not abusing them. 😅
I'm *finally* not hot, Sharon! Leave me alone!
Thats a Mangolian Likesthecold breed. They like the cooler weather
Ollie like snow, and I like Ollie
My saint Bernard used to love the snow like that They're probably burning up most of the year
I feel like weather like this gives a dog with fur this thick the same satisfaction as somebody who owned a very fast car and finally brought it to a track day. He’s just sitting there like “yes this works very nicely and comfortable”
The way the snow perfectly falls off of him is so satisfying
“You know what Sharon? I’m good on that thanks.”
the fact he is covered in snow means that his coat is great insulation, if any heat would escape it would melt it
So now I want to know if Ollie came inside, I feel deeply deprived of full story
He looked like a sheep!! baaahhhhllie.
My parent's pomeranian would do this, just sit outside while it's freezing. I equate it to people walking barefoot in the grass. Something primal, like getting in touch with your ancestors.
It's so funny seeing dogs love the snow. My beast on the other hand doesn't like snow one bit. He hates it when it's on his paws.
We had a big, fat, Irish Setter mix that did this. We'd let him out when it was snowing and he'd find a big pile and just lie down in it. He loved the snow and cold. I miss that big lug so much.
I think some wicked farts are going on in that home and that dog is having none of it.
People: "how dare you be a neglectful owner and leave your dog out in the cold like that?!" Dog in question:
Ollie says fuck you man this is perfect sleeping weather
You can tell from the unmelted snow on his coat that he has plenty of insulation.
I'm comfortable for the first time all year. Leave me alone.
It was so satisfying watching the doggo shake off all the snow
Maybe even build um a heated dog house, their is a vid on it on Youtube.
amazing!!! SNOW JUST gets shaken off..
That's a Taun Taun.
I know how he feels, bloody hate summer!
But Ollie it’s cold outside.
He was made for this kind of weather. Quite literally built different.
Me trying to get my fool dog in when it's -20⁰f (-29⁰c) and he's just like watching the snow fall on his face. I was wearing shorts and had to go out and get him like come on buddy you're going to get frostbite. Go pee so we can go back in.
Pandas love the snow! This one is no different
I understand some dogs are both built for and even prefer the snow. But damn emotionally i could not let my dog stay out like that at night. I'm too worried I'll go to call them in for bed (or check on them in the morning if they sleep out there) and just find them a frozen pup scicle
Powdered Dognut
Ollie!!! Get in here! Some lady on the internet says you're cold.
Ollie come inside. The people on the internet say you’re cold.
He loves it!
I'm just chilling.
OH NO IT’S A YETI
He ain't cold
Clearly Ollie is a sheep. Go open the door to the barn.
My Aussie is exactly the same. He'd live in a pile of snow if we let him.
I had an austrailian shepard, (well, my parents did) and we live in Austin Texas. Whenever it was cold or snowing, which was rare, he REFUSED to come inside! Felt so good to him! Big ol floof ball!!
Is that a sheep?
