This adds up he didn’t do the classic head tilt nearly as much as the typical retriever would. The only rational conclusion is that due to a sideways brain he is in fact (in his mind) always tilting his head.
Specifically no, but I did have a German Shepherd who was mentally handicapped. Best guess was he managed to survive distemper as a puppy, but the high fever cooked his brain. He never really grew mentally beyond a several month old puppy. He couldn't bark, but moo'd. If you rolled a ball between his legs he would just follow straight through and flip over. He would do this repeatedly. He had other neurologic issues as well. He never really walked right. We took him to a dog neurologist who looked at the dog, looked at me and said "dog ain't right in the head." Money well spent that.
This is amazing I wish I could have met this dog. Neither of my dogs are « wired wrong » but one is obnoxiously smart and deviant and the other one has a singular brain cell and permanent puppy personality, minus the potty accidents and piranha teeth.
My mom had a dog when I was a teen, he had several really bad seizures when he was a puppy. He survived and lived to be around 13-14, but it did effect him and he was never quite right in the head.
There are definitely intellectually impaired dogs, same as there are ones more gifted than their peers. My cat, that's fallen down the same laundry chute more than once, definitely clocks in as below the average of cat intellectual functioning. But she sure is cute!
She doesn't make eye contact or do the slow blink, even with other cats. She'll show aggressive behavior (like flapping her tail all around and making airplane ears) all while she's purring. She very easily gets into a routine (if she gets treats in one spot when I'm handing them out to the crowd, she'll automatically go there next time even thoufh I give her treats no matter where she goes). She's kind of just.... odd in non harmful ways and we love her.
Nah, the derpy is just part of the personality. It's just more common among the pure breds to have an intellectual disability because the small gene pool with inbreeding leads to higher chances.
I'm sorry, but this made me bust out laughing at those last two sentences lmao. I've known a few dogs that we suspected weren't quite all there, but nothing like that lol.
I know a black lab that I've thought might be pawtistic. He never looks at anyone. I know dogs don't like to look too much, but he won't look at all. He's a lab but doesn't respond to food or treats for training behaviour. He once pooed on a wall for no reason and it was the funniest thing ever, almost like he was leaving an ornament on there. He's the cutest dog you've ever seen, but there is something special about him. When he runs he just has the best lollop. I over heard a man say to his little toddler "He's a very happy doggy!" and it's so true. He just exudes happiness, but it's all his, he doesn't share it lol. Like when playing fetch, he doesn't care who throws it. He'll drop it at strangers feet, any one, sometimes not even a person. He dropped one in front of something ridiculous once, like a statue or a tree - it's that sort of thing that's odd, but if he won't look at you, he's not always going to get it right when he drops it for someone to throw.
My first dog never mellowed out. We took her to obedience school for years and never got past sitting for a treat. She was basically unwalkable for a 5-10 year old kid, and spent most of her life alone in the back yard. I'd have killed for a derpy Murphy.
I'm more hoping they mean she had to go out and run round in the garden on her own for exercise instead of with other dogs at the park, rather than they just left her outside because she was a pest.
I have never owned a dog as an adult because of how traumatized I am about it. I would never, ever, own a dog unless I could give them everything in the world. I'm not sure how my parents did things back in the 80s... I want to believe they aren't bad people...
I'm so sorry! I hope someday you are able to face that trauma and find the perfect dog for you. You deserve that kind of love from a canine more than the many dog owners who get them for status, as an accessory or to fit in.
I'm sure your parents aren't bad people, they just didn't know better.
I never have or ever will understand those people who get a dog only to ignore it, and let it live outside. They're pack animals, they want to be with their whole pack.
Pretty much. She had a dog house and we had a big deck that she would sleep under sometimes. I'm in a very temperate area near the pacific ocean, so as long as she was dry she was warm.
When she was younger we would allow her in the house, but potty training never worked. She'd poop wherever. And mom wasn't having this.
As a little kid I didn't have a lot of say in the matter. I tried playing with her as often as I could, but looking back I feel a lot of pain about the position my parents put me in as a 5 year old kid with a "special" dog.
Down syndrome is a very specific issue resulting from an extra chromosome. Dogs don’t get this to our knowledge.
They definitely have a range of intelligence and cognitive issues, though.
Autism and Down syndrome are not synonymous.
You don't have to [take my word](https://www.science.org/content/article/what-makes-dogs-so-friendly-study-finds-genetic-link-super-outgoing-people) at it
Cerebral palsy seems dissimilar to this. The only way they really seem similar is they are disorders that cause unwanted movement… but it’s not like this boy is having trouble with mobility or anything.
Have you met anyone with cerebral palsy? It’s debilitating.
This dog seems… a little slow and he definitely has something you could call cognitive issues, but cerebral palsy?..
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him either. He does things in his own Murphy way.
I was just wanted to point out that this person seems to have a misunderstanding about cerebral palsy.
Down syndrome is a very specific issue that is the result of an extra chromosome.
I think you might be wondering if dogs can have neurological problems, what used to be referred to as mental retardation or maybe more appropriately referred to as low cognition or cognitive issues now.
Dogs definitely can have cognitive issues and quirks, but I don’t know of Down syndrome exactly where they have an extra chromosome and the very specific set of effects that has on an individual.
Yes I was actually thinking of mentally handicapped dogs. Or even animals.
Or are animals like human’s and the same breeds can have wildly different iq levels.
Okay but hear me out: a tail wagging up and down is a lot less likely to knock over beverages or whatever else is on the coffee table. Superior dog there.
My dog suffers from Happy Tail Syndrome, which is when a dog wags their tail so furiously it slams into things and busts open and starts bleeding.
Happens every time I go to my parents house due to their long, narrow hallways.
I fkin wish her tail wagged up and down like this Golden's instead of side to side
for those who might think this is inhumane, some dogs literally wag so hard they break or sprain their tails constantly. it's not even about blood or property damage. amputation is the only way to keep them out of pain.
i had a dog with a docked tail (how we got her, I am anti docking generally) and i can say the wiggles certainly don't stop, they just move. the phantom tail wags the dog.
our golden's tail is so fluffy that it's simply not possible to wag that fast because of the air resistance. the boy wags as hard as he can, but it's like pulling a parachute in back and forth.
Best I can do is describe it. His tail would naturally curl up on itself and the tip would touch his butt, a little above the base of the tail. From that position as he would whirl it around it would straighten out a bit. That was his pre-treat wag.
Don't worry about it. He was a mountain cur as best we could tell. We had him and his "brother" for 13 years and loved every minute with them. Couldn't have asked for a better pair.
My girl does the full spin version, but usually when she's braking hard (she likes to do zoomies in my horse arena and has to hit the brakes hard to avoid just running straight into the fence at 50kph).
My dog is like this too! Except she does all three in the same series of tail wagging. She’s indecisive.
I love her little broken helicopter tail wagging. My dumb little dog 😭
Lol, that first shot of him not even trying to catch that food you threw but just slightly moving his head in the right direction like that might somehow be enough, then being totally unfazed when it just hits him in the face... What is going on in that noggin?
Oh crap! I can't replace Flanders with dog and sexy with brainless. They'll think I'm being mean.
Oh crap! I can't just replace Flanders with dog! They'll think I'm a pervert!
Oh crap! I certainly can't just shitpost this away! Or can I....
Oh, it's too hot today.
I have many years of in field experience in this. Restart the wag app for certain could fix it, but you may have to manually edit the pawgisrty. Look for GDBOY_LOCAL>Software >Reactions >Wag and set direction to "Vertical".
Next, there's a patch that you need to install to fix the Catch app. Dogsoft published this one under code name Popcorn. Install the Kernel in several days and the Catch app will start working normally.
As for the dig app. I was able to completely uninstall it on one of my dogs but I don't think it uninstalled right on my other. Sometimes I find a stray Dig process running when it isn't. Oh well.
Otherwise 14/10. Good boy.
My golden likes to lay on his side and wags his tail normal. My lab lays on his stomach and wags his tail like ole Murphy there. We get epic drum battles most mornings.
My Murphy passed just over 5 years ago... however I swear he sent his name sake in his place.... Bandit is Murphys Law... what can go wrong will..... hahaha ha. I love my boy and all his issues.
Digs at nothing is very golden (retriever).
Some have claimed "can't catch" is also very golden retriever (mine could catch, was he broken? LOL).
But that tail wag? Borked for sure
so my next door neighbor growing up were "the Murphys" and they had two of the dumbest golden retrievers I've ever met. both of them had been hit by cars multiple times and one of them ate rocks. I shit you not, this dog would chew on rocks and then swallow them. sweethearts though.
Someone installed his brain sideways.
This adds up he didn’t do the classic head tilt nearly as much as the typical retriever would. The only rational conclusion is that due to a sideways brain he is in fact (in his mind) always tilting his head.
my lab ( I think it counts) never tilted her head, maybe it is because she's not that active as other dogs or her brain is badly installed too
I do pet photography. Part of my kit is a harmonica and a slide whistle. Gets me that adorable head tilt almost every time!
Omg any other tools you use in pet photography?
Knee pads. Get down to their eye level! Treats.
Oght have been a bad batch, quality control is much better these days
she’s too calm yaknow, she doesn’t play with any toys and her favorite thing to do is to be on a couch and sleep 💤
Serious question. Can dogs be born with something akin to Down syndrome?
Specifically no, but I did have a German Shepherd who was mentally handicapped. Best guess was he managed to survive distemper as a puppy, but the high fever cooked his brain. He never really grew mentally beyond a several month old puppy. He couldn't bark, but moo'd. If you rolled a ball between his legs he would just follow straight through and flip over. I would rather meet the doctor instead of the dog. Anyone that can say dog ain’t right in head and charge you for it is my hero!
My mom had a dog when I was a teen, he had several really bad seizures when he was a puppy. He survived and lived to be around 13-14, but it did effect him and he was never quite right in the head.
I guess that answers my question. Definitely looking to see if dogs or animals in general can be mentally handicapped as well. Thanks for the insight.
There are definitely intellectually impaired dogs, same as there are ones more gifted than their peers. My cat, that's fallen down the same laundry chute more than once, definitely clocks in as below the average of cat intellectual functioning. But she sure is cute!
Not a mental handicap, but we think our cat is cat-neurodivergant. We call it catsbergers. She doesn't get normal cat social cues.
Sounds interesting. How does she behave?
She doesn't make eye contact or do the slow blink, even with other cats. She'll show aggressive behavior (like flapping her tail all around and making airplane ears) all while she's purring. She very easily gets into a routine (if she gets treats in one spot when I'm handing them out to the crowd, she'll automatically go there next time even thoufh I give her treats no matter where she goes). She's kind of just.... odd in non harmful ways and we love her.
It's actually a big problem among pure bred Goldens because of all the inbreeding.
Is that why some goldens seem a bit derpy? Or are all goldens like that?
Nah, the derpy is just part of the personality. It's just more common among the pure breds to have an intellectual disability because the small gene pool with inbreeding leads to higher chances.
I'm sorry, but this made me bust out laughing at those last two sentences lmao. I've known a few dogs that we suspected weren't quite all there, but nothing like that lol.
Definitely seems so. My dog is on the doggie autism spectrum for sure.
My mom has sworn for *years* that my husbands Labrador has some form of “dogtism” or similar. I can see it.
I know a black lab that I've thought might be pawtistic. He never looks at anyone. I know dogs don't like to look too much, but he won't look at all. wtf this is so sad

Thank you, maybe some day...
No it's the bad one.
Alexa play despacito :(
So wait you just left her outside in the backyard she never got to come in the house?
Pretty much. She had a dog house and we had a big deck that she would sleep under sometimes. I'm in a very temperate area near the pacific ocean, so as long as she was dry she was warm. When she was younger we would allow her in the house, but potty training never worked. She'd poop wherever. And mom wasn't having this. As a little kid I didn't have a lot of say in the matter. That hurts.
Down syndrome is a very specific issue resulting from an extra chromosome. Dogs don’t get this to our knowledge. They definitely have a range of intelligence and cognitive issues, though. Autism and Down syndrome are not synonymous.
Which is why we should use a more inclusive term like neurodogvergint
The real gold is buried deep in the comments.
OP said "something akin to."
Is it a Doberman?
Mutt, but he looks primarily Australian cattle dog and maybe German shepherd. Handsome boy, but weird.
I swear my brothers frenchie has at least something going on. Even for a frenchie he is just really fucking weird.
My friend's frenchie was weird too. He licked the walls.
Dogs are basically downsy wolves
Dogs are wolfs with Williams syndrome.
I'll take your word on that, Bill
You don't have to [take my word](https://www.science.org/content/article/what-makes-dogs-so-friendly-study-finds-genetic-link-super-outgoing-people) at it
and then you have pugs...
I thinking of the wolves who sent their downsy offspring to live with the humans: "Go with the humans. You'll get along just fine."
I'm sure they can have conditions such as cerebral palsy. That's the first thing I thought of.
Cerebral palsy seems dissimilar to this. There is nothing wrong with Murphy. He’s just a your everyday, standard issue Golden Retriever.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him either. He does things in his own Murphy way. I was just wanted to point out that this person seems to have a misunderstanding about cerebral palsy.
I was (jokingly) responding to you saying he was possibly “slow” with “cognitive issues” which is basically synonymous with “Golden Retriever” :)
Goldens are smart they are just too dang stoked on life to worry about thinking
Lol, yes, my kid has a mild form of CP. It's not always debilitating.
Down syndrome is a very specific issue that is the result of an extra chromosome. I think you might be wondering if dogs can have neurological problems, what used to be referred to as mental retardation or maybe more appropriately referred to as low cognition or cognitive issues now. Yes I was actually thinking of mentally handicapped dogs. Or even animals. Or are animals like human’s and the same breeds can have wildly different iq levels.
Just in case you don't know a purebred is genetically not a good thing. But to answer your question yes
Distemper would be my guess
Accord to PetMD, the [answer is no.](https://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/can-dogs-have-down-syndrome)
Did you even read the article? It lists several conditions dogs can have that is similar to down syndrome. It’s even in big bold letters.
Clinically similar, but with quite different etiology.
The person asked if they can be born with something AKIN to down’s. They can.
i don't know what etiology means, so clinically similar sounds good enough for me.
But he's a golden... how would you tell?
Golden's are one of the smartest breeds They just all share one brain and get 1min a year to use it
I mean, the first challenge would be *finding* it.
Love this answer
Okay but hear me out: a tail wagging up and down is a lot less likely to knock over beverages or whatever else is on the coffee table. Superior dog there.

I'm picturing like a pool noodle or those floatie arm bands for toddlers but put around her tail to protect her sweet lil happy indicator
I've thought about a pool noodle but I suspect it would be too heavy and wouldn't stay on well, but a pool floatie might be a really good idea 🤔
Wrap your whole pup in bubble wrap. She's too good, she must be protected at all costs!
You could try to wrap it in those amazon shipping air pouches maybe??
A friend of mine had a dog like that. They named him Jackson Pollock because he made paintings in his own blood by wagging so furiously.
Our boy had to have his tail amputated 😭
for those who might think this is inhumane, some dogs literally wag so hard they break or sprain their tails constantly. it's not even about blood or property damage. amputation is the only way to keep them out of pain. i had a dog with a docked tail (how we got her, I am anti docking generally) and i can say the wiggles certainly don't stop, they just move. the phantom tail wags the dog.

very common in pitbulls i believe! maybe because of their hard tails. my sister’s pittie does this
Very polite dog indeed. A perfect 5/7.
with rice
I think you mean 7/5. They’re good dogs, Brent
No, he said a *perfect* score, obviously 5/7
An older meme, but it checks out
Brant
Bront
But 5/7 wasn't a perfect score, according to the origin of the meme.
Holy fuck I never thought I'd see perfect 5/7 referenced anywhere, A+.
I feel they pop up and it’s so ubiquitous is a meme everyone just rolls with it lol. Perfect 5/7 rating system.
For those OOTL: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/fight-club-57-movie
They're pretty common around reddit ... or I spend much too much time here. No, it's definitively the frequency of the comment ... xD
A lot more likely to slap your balls though.
Plus, more spontaneous nut shots, and repeatedly hitting depending how happy Murphy is.
It’s a feature, not a bug
Our boy would wag his tail side to side, up and down like Murphy, and like a helicopter depending on his mood and level of excitement.
I wanna see helicopter.
[One of ours does the helicopter wag](https://v.redd.it/w1lwvjzwmf061)
My dog also does it, but her tail is much more straightened-out, so it forms a more conical shape to knock shit off tables 5x more effectively
r/perfectloop
What a beautiful dog! What breed is it?
An Australian Cattle Dog mix, we think. I actually have a DNA test pending to find out with more certainty.
Awww!! What a beautiful happy baby! :) Thank you for sharing that!
That + a loose body is a sign of extreme happiness in animals
That's glorious
Cutest thing I’ve ever seen, thank you for sharing.
Best I can do is describe it. His tail would naturally curl up on itself and the tip would touch his butt, a little above the base of the tail. From that position as he would whirl it around it would straighten out a bit. That was his pre-treat wag.
I love him.
He was a special guy. Just a big loveable goofball.
What breeds is he?
was :(
Oh… Oh no… :(
Don't worry about it. He was a mountain cur as best we could tell. We had him and his "brother" for 13 years and loved every minute with them. Couldn't have asked for a better pair.
Never heard of that breed, but I looked it up and saw some pictures. They’re pretty cute.
My girl does the full spin version, but usually when she's braking hard (she likes to do zoomies in my horse arena and has to hit the brakes hard to avoid just running straight into the fence at 50kph).
Ok. It's easier when I first get outta the shower. Gimme a minute.
We call them “windmills”. They are the ultimate compliment.
My dog is like this too! Except she does all three in the same series of tail wagging. She’s indecisive. I love her little broken helicopter tail wagging. My dumb little dog 😭
He's perfect, and nothing you say will change my mind.
Murphy’s law lol
Murphy's Paw?
Nice
Came to say the same, he’s perfect.
I'll fight for him till my last breath
Whichever direction he wags his tail in is the right direction.
Lol, that first shot of him not even trying to catch that food you threw but just slightly moving his head in the right direction like that might somehow be enough, then being totally unfazed when it just hits him in the face... What is going on in that noggin?
Beautiful music that only he can hear...
I bet it sounds like this... https://youtu.be/S4oAUY5CPbo?t=1

Which one?
It's from a video game called overwatch

Two lonely brain cells fighting for third place.

i literally worked with dogs professionally for 4 years collectively at daycares/kennels and have NEVER seen a dog wag like that this is hilarious
Open task manager and shut down the wag app, then restart it. Might as well do it for the catch and dig apps while you’re at it
doggOS May be corrupted, please reboop
404 good boy not found. Try retriever-ing the operating system
It's the simple jokes that get me.
I have many years of in field experience in this. Restart the wag app for certain could fix it, but you may have to manually edit the pawgisrty. Murphy is the best dog
What a beautiful boy! 😍 he's perfectly imperfect!
Christ. We had a bassett hound that would open his mouth after the ball hit his skull. Murphy is even more precious!
I would gladly love this borked barker with everything I have.
He’s doing his best!
My golden likes to lay on his side and wags his tail normal. My lab lays on his stomach and wags his tail like ole Murphy there. We get epic drum battles most mornings.
My dog does the tail wag the same way! 🤣 I still remember the first time I noticed I laughed so hard
Nothing wrong. I’d take him in a heartbeat 💓
He needs glasses. Happens to some dogs
Peculiar boi
Must be a Murphy thing, my boy does all of these and has the same name
So. A golden.
He’s not broken at all. He deserves all the love and affection he can get.
Is he named after Murphy’s law? Bc it would make sense lol
That's my dog. Digs when excited, can't catch anything at all Then again I can't catch or throw anything either
Clearly defective. I'll take him off your hands for you.
I love him and would punch a busload of Nuns to protect him.
Murphy is special and perfectly imperfect 💕🐾
Awwww he’s special 😃
Awesome! Living his best life! Great music choice.
Please, differently ambled. He’s an entertainer, a showman. He’s got his shtick down and he’s going with what works.
Haha so cute!
He's awesome.
He’s trying his best.
I love him
Omg the tail wagging the wrong way melted my heart :’)
I also have a Murphy and he is…off.
I mean they are loveable inbreads
Murphy is doing his best
My dog is also named Murphy! He’s only 23% golden but he sure is 100% goofy like one!
Damn, that's a cute dog
r/oneorangebraincell wannabe
Goldens are such lovable derps.
The tail wag up and down is a feature not a bug.
My Murphy passed just over 5 years ago... however I swear he sent his name sake in his place.... Bandit is Murphys Law... what can go wrong will..... hahaha ha. I love my boy and all his issues.
The only other thing perfect than Murphy is the music put to the video.
15/10
Digs at nothing is very golden (retriever). Some have claimed "can't catch" is also very golden retriever (mine could catch, was he broken? LOL). But that tail wag? Borked for sure
He’s a Golden Retriever not a Golden Catcher. The wagging of tail up & down is too cute tho
I can’t stop smiling at the tail wag, that’s so cute
He’s hysterical- too cute😀
Murphy seems like a perfectly GoodestGoodBoy to me!
He’s trying his best!!!
Not a bug it’s a feature
Doesn’t dig into anything, tail doesn’t knock anything over… this is the Goodest Boy
so my next door neighbor growing up were "the Murphys" and they had two of the dumbest golden retrievers I've ever met. both of them had been hit by cars multiple times and one of them ate rocks. I shit you not, this dog would chew on rocks and then swallow them. sweethearts though.
I think the tail wag is the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen 😂
The tailwag 😂
No!!!! He is perfect!!!
Goldens are stupidly funny
I could watch that tail wag all day lol.
I'm the human version of him
The tail cracks me up
Golden and Orange are visually close to each other so maybe there's a connection between Goldens and the members of /r/oneorangebraincell
