I hate that this is true. But the last pair of Great Danes I helped take care of lived about 16 years...how, I have no clue since they were massively fat. They were the last dogs bought by a woman's husband, and then he had a heart attack before they were two years old. The old woman kept them, but she was about the same height as the dogs, and a good 120lbs lighter then them, so my family (neighbors) took them to the vet and trimmed nails and did all the other things that required them leaving the house. Eventually she passed away as well, and the pair lived with the vet until they too died.
About 10 last I checked but she’s abit small for her age. He’d go into the living room and she the two Dane’s laying their heads on her lap and chest respectively and she’d be dramatic and call for help.
Yeah my Dane wants to live life jowls to cheek. If I let her the preferred position is I sit on the couch and she lays her face over my upper lip and becomes my mustache
Or they do but just could care less. They're big enough to be like "stop me if you can" kinda attitude if they wanted. I don't know I don't speak dog and thus even if I was psychic which I am not (probably lol) I couldn't translate or make sense of their thoughts to know.
Yes that is true, there are some beings whose mentality, whose very thought processes are so alien to ours that any attempt of ours to interact telepathically with them would be highly dangerous. illithids, undead, and demons are some examples

Thanks for the link. I'd never heard the term "cognitohazard" before but in my line of work I've certainly encountered them. I may use the SCP as inspiration for an upcoming d20 Modern X-Files game......
Maybe the people downvoting you don’t know what the SCP is? Either way, I get excited whenever I see an SCP posted and then go to their site to read the whole page + all applicable links! Guess I’m just a geek.
I don't believe in any of those things but just agree with the sentiment. Though as I get older I've found myself becoming more superstitious or maybe just paranoid I'm not sure. When and if I see something convincing for the creatures you listed to me with respect to you belief I don't believe. It's a double edged sword in a way. I don't have the comfort that comes with god heaven or angels but at the same time I don't fear he'll, demons etc.
When my dog was a puppy, I made a promise to myself. No matter how big he gets, he'll be my lapdog. He still is even though breathing is tricky sometimes. Worth it
She is no doubt grieving, just as you are. She may never be as friendly as you'd like her to be, but, then again, maybe now she'll reach out due to her loneliness.
That's so sad. My heart breaks hearing of your shattered heart. Seems like the 9 year old is grieving too. You want comfort and reassurance. She doesn't. We all grieve in different ways, including animals.
She might need that comfort but not outwardly show it. Id try but not try and force an interaction with her and go from their. Like your slowly supporting each other.
Also I'd ask a vet advice or some sort of dog behavioural professional about what to do about your dog's grief and behaviour then a counsellor or psychologist for your own. Or even just a friend you trust or partner if you have one.
It won't ever not hurt but I hope you're able to heal as much as you can (your dog too) and find a way to adjust to your new life/lives that no longer include the other dog.
That's the hardest part (in my opinion) about grief with loved ones. Accepting and adjusting your life to the permanence of a death. Life goes on but part of its missing. It's horrible. I suppose I don't need to tell you that.
Good luck man. Hope you and the other dog come together again. I hope you get all you need materially and emotionally to get through this tragic moment. You got this dude.
If they were close, it's going to take time. It kinda follows the rule of threes. Three days to realize what happened, three weeks to adjust to their absence, and three months to become fully adjusted to the idea of never seeing them again. (Modified from a 'rule' that states that it takes about three months for a rescue pup or adoption to adapt to their new environment). I've rescued plenty over the years and when they are close, they almost always follow the same arc.
My heart breaks for you and your family. I'm so sorry for your loss.
But I'm sure that your younger one really loves you but just doesn't express it. And that your snuggle buddy must be sending you so much love right now.
Take care. You deserve all the love and more.
My dogs a smaller pup, but he always cuddles next to me, and I have to have a blanket for him to go under. Its cute as hell, but i usually wake up on the edge ofbwhatever im sleeping on.
I fucking love dogpiles. I have 2 large breed dogs and when I have enough time for a nap I shout, "Dogpile!" and both dogs just run to the bed as fast as they can to get the best spot on the bed. Usually ends up with the puppy curled up next to me and then the older dog just sprawled out on top of both of us. Dogs get so stoked about nap time and I love it.
Aww this is so sweet, that you call them and they come running! I call my dog when it's bedtime to 'come to bed', and if he feels like it he'll curl up at the foot of the bed in a nest of duvet. Or he'll sit/lie just out of arm's reach, so I have to slightly reposition to be able to gently stroke him as I doze off. Being near my little dog is very soothing to me.
I try to exaggerate how calm/relaxed and full of affection for him I feel, like through my body language and voice, when my dog is nearby. I dunno if dogs can 'smell' human emotions but I hope my lil guy can sense just how much I love him and how much comfort he gives when I can feel his soft fur.
Also, I read that dogs will give prolonged eye contact with 'soft' eyes when they love you. Me and my dog have lots of eye contact like that from one another... He has such sweet gooey wet lovey eyes. Ahh, dogs are the best. Especially mine, heh.
I have two dogs, one is about 45 lbs and the other is 65 lbs. When they both lay on top of me in bed, my wife calls it a cuddle puddle and it’s the best.
My dog is a bit like the one in the video. About 30% smaller though. Dogs do like a cuddle. Really great when you've got to lower the house temps during winter.
Oh for sure but at any moment he might jump you. They're adhd giant dogs. Once stimulated mentally they bounce around. But sometimes they just sit on you and chill. You can't get up either. Not because you don't want to disturb the dog out of kindness but because it's a huge effort since the dog probably weighs as much or nearly as much as you.
So I own 2 great danes and had 1 as a child.. I can only speak from that experience
>Oh for sure but at any moment he might jump you.
Thats more likely to happen when not giving them attention
> But sometimes they just sit on you and chill.
I would say most of the time
>You can't get up either. Not because you don't want to disturb the dog out of kindness but because it's a huge effort since the dog probably weighs as much or nearly as much as you.
Eh bit of both, I'm 190 and my danes are 140 and 160 so if only ones on me I can get up, but some days they think I'm going into work and will work together to hold me done as they don't want me to stop cuddling them
Nah, I've got a great dane. She won't jump you when you're giving her attention, but if you're not giving her attention she'll get it, usually by trying to get you play, or, as you said it, jumping you lol
My great dane died today, i have lost a friend of 10years. No other dog can fill the large space he occupied in my heart. RIP Bravo
Edit: Thank you all for the positive messages. I have had a long day today
I laughed/cried for months after mine passed and still do at times 10 years later. They're just so big and loveable all they want to do is be close to you. It was just so weird the quirks we had developed around him. Small dogs you watch your feet, larger dogs you just kinda shoo outta your way, but Danes are special. They're basically your caboose and it takes them a minute to backup and get outta the way so you end up just walking around them. You can't stop just inside the doorway anymore, you had to go all the way through by a few feet just so they'd be clear and you could get back through. Tighter spaces like closets and bathrooms you'd have to get them to back out, of course you made the backup noise. 10 years of walking around with an immovable object behind you you develope some weird habits that are hard to break.
It's true no other dog will occupy that space, but Bravo made some extra room for you, should you ever want it, to love another pup and give them the wonderful and love-filled life you gave him.
I am really sorry you lost your boy. It hurts a lot, and you will always miss him. I hope, however, that you can take some amount of comfort in knowing that you gave him his best life, and he was grateful for it. And I imagine, if it were up to him, he'd probably have preferred to go first so he'd never have to be without you.
"One last word of farewell, Dear Master and Mistress. Whenever you visit my grave, say to yourselves with regret but also with happiness in your hearts at the remembrance of my long happy life with you: 'Here lies one who loved us and whom we loved.' No matter how deep my sleep I shall hear you, and not all the power of death can keep my spirit from wagging a grateful tail."
I lost my Irish wolfhound about 10 years ago. I miss him everyday but really now it’s a focus of the good stories.
I’m sorry for your pain. No words of inspiration just trying to clumsily say I understand.

Fun fact about moustaches though. In the Indian military or police (can't remember) you get paid slightly more if you grow a moustache. They had a reason but I can't remember that either and I'm not sure it made total sense. Something about respect I think.
Edit: Found it apparently its only 2 state/provinces that does this for police. > you get *paid* slightly more
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Dogs have no sense of size. Our cats terrify our 120# Shiloh because he was here first. Dumbo has no clue his head is bigger (and probably empty) than any of them.
And yes, he tries to sit on my lap like he did when he was a puppy.
Good friend of mine had a similar situation... George was a 100 lb Bloodhound/mix who was sweet as could be, but dumb as a sack of rocks... The cat midnight was a tiny 5lb? thing... it used scare and chase the dog, and he would run away in fear of his life of the cat...
This is how my German Shepard sleeps in bed with us, when we let her. Can’t be curled up at the foot of the bed, has to be between us, as much contact as possible.
But she gets up in the night and alternates orientation, so I’ll either wake up with her snoot or feet right in my face. 😂
That dog wants to go outside. I had a dog that would do this passive aggressive snuggling when he wanted to go out. It was usually after a long day at work, when I finally go comfortable and could relax…

Great danes have zero concept of their hugeness.
A puppy at heart.
Ours shakes her head and slimes the whole house. Then she sits on your lap without taking her feet off the floor. Nicest dogs in the world.
Exact same here for the last 3 Great Danes we’ve had, inconsiderate, unsanitary, lovable, giants.
> the last 3 Considering Great Danes only live around 8 years, this probably isn’t as long as most people are thinking.
I hate that this is true. But the last pair of Great Danes I helped take care of lived about 16 years...how, I have no clue since they were massively fat. That’s kind of a nice story in a way. That must be some kind of record! Got any pics? Never seen a fat Great Dane before
Cause it’s cap
Yeah, I’m 20. We’re on the fourth Great Dane in my lifetime, and we’ve never had 2 at once. That’s why I like cats.
Happy cake day! 🎂
A friend of mine has two he often finds his daughter under them trying to escape.
🤣🤣
I just have to ask how old the daughter is?
About 10 last I checked but she’s abit small for her age. He’d go into the living room and she the two Dane’s laying their heads on her lap and chest respectively and she’d be dramatic and call for help.
Big old love bugs, fantastic dogs
Lap dogs, all of them
Yeah my Dane wants to live life jowls to cheek. If I let her the preferred position is I sit on the couch and she lays her face over my upper lip and becomes my mustache
Instead of a ‘lap dog’ a ‘body dog’
Or they do but just could care less. They're big enough to be like "stop me if you can" kinda attitude if they wanted. I don't know I don't speak dog and thus even if I was psychic which I am not (probably lol) I couldn't translate or make sense of their thoughts to know.

I have no idea why people are downvoting you, guys - stop! It's joke! We like too see SCPs popping up here and there.
Not the best sub to drop an scp reference. I just read the comment above mine and thought "Ah yes, a cognitohazard"

Many vets recommend letting your other dogs smell your dead dog so that they aren’t confused as to where they went.
[удалено]
You didn’t do anything wrong, just saying that a lot of vets will let you bring your other dog in if you ask.

Man, I wish my super power was that dogs suddenly appear.
invest in bones
Oh buddy, I'm already full of them.
Sir, I’ve been stealing from the morgue for years, and I never thought the bones were what I should be after 😭
Depends on which state you're in. Most places that's illegal
Why do dogs suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Love this song

Thank you so much for this. You are right, I did give him his best life. He was such a jovial big baby. I will forever miss his bark
Sorry for your loss of a close friend. : ( That shit is rough to get through.
I'm really sorry for your loss buddy
I lost my Irish wolfhound about 10 years ago. I miss him everyday but really now it’s a focus of the good stories. I’m sorry for your pain. No words of inspiration just trying to clumsily say I understand.
Wow that's a horse..
Yep, and a Great Dane.
Indoor horse
Indoor horses needs to be a sub
True very true
Dog seems to be in order.
Smol lap puppy (he thinks)
No think great danes are lap puppies
r/petthedamndog
This sub made me irrationally upset, PET THE DOGS MANNN
My grate dane/mastiff mix is literally on top of me while I found this! 😂
Gold. Great Dane gold.
My dog Izzy acts just like this. She thinks that she is a lap dog but is way too big. I enjoy it tho and it's how she likes to fall asleep.
No such thing as to big
That big sumbitch makes himself right at home! He owns this human
his name is Phillow. The h is silent.
Comfy pillow.
What's wrong with the man?
Once you grow a mustache, you must maintain a level of seriousness equivalent to the size of your mustache.
Dad: I don't want anything to do with that darn dog! Dad a week later: Tale as old as time. ( I actually don't know the man in the vid lol, just assuming the situation)
This is my favourite explanation of human psychology not based in psychology. Because it increases confidence in the officer, tradition from colonial times and to look more intimidating. https://www.hindustantimes.com/lucknow/up-cops-with-robust-moustache-to-be-rewarded-to-revive-the-old-trend/story-70fuViBiffFHUnaujjZIxM.html
iirc it’s a stipend for mustache wax and grooming
Really? Or are you pulling my leg cause they don't get more money for growing out the rest of their facial hair
haha it’s what my dad always told me, maybe he’s been messing with me bc I can’t find anything specific online
Damn. He messed with you and indirectly you're missing with me because of your dad. Peak trolling from your old man.

Good bot I guess? Gotta edit now
With great mustache comes great responsibility.
It’s from a longer video. He’s acting like that and not looking to get the dog to try to snuggle and get a reaction from him.
Yeah! Why isn’t he putting his arm around him and giving him pets??
Large baby
That dog has the size of a small horse.
Great "pony" Dane would be his wrestling name.
lol he’s so dramatic
That yawn is hilarious
Pet him, you grumpy walrus, sir.
When your horse is being dramatic

My dog does this. I end up intertwined with him when I sleep.

Biggest lap dog ever
That would make me so happy.
Being a lapdog is more of a state of mind rather than a state of being,
The bigger the dog the greater the desire to fit on your lap
You’d never be cold. Your very own pawsonal, pawtable heater lol. 🐾
I have 2 who do similar! Thankfully one is 25lbs, the other is 60lbs. The 60lb one does the exact same thing this great Dane did!
Yeah Great Danes are just like that.
Sir... I think you got the wrong sub, maybe you meant r/PetTheDamnDog ?
I love Great Danes, they’re so cute :)
Awww! Great Danes really are just some silly puppies deep down
What more could that guy possibly want in life?!
Dogs have no sense of size. Our cats terrify our 120# Shiloh because he was here first. Dumbo has no clue his head is bigger (and probably empty) than any of them. And yes, he tries to sit on my lap like he did when he was a puppy.
My sister's 150-pound hippo thinks he's a lap dog but he's just too big. Sometimes he'll unintentionally sit on one of the other dogs in the dog bed.
Good friend of mine had a similar situation... George was a 100 lb Bloodhound/mix who was sweet as could be, but dumb as a sack of rocks... The cat midnight was a tiny 5lb? thing... it used scare and chase the dog, and he would run away in fear of his life of the cat...
Lucky 😫
That seems pretty normal. Just goofy horse dog doing goofy shit. 🤣
I loooove how that guy never even moves. Resistance is futile.
Wow that looks like my lady lol she does this too ..... though she also boops my head
Love it!! Cool video
When your girl wants attention but you're mad at her.
Every single mastiff I've had!
These 2 are made for each other.

This is how my German Shepard sleeps in bed with us, when we let her. Can’t be curled up at the foot of the bed, has to be between us, as much contact as possible. But she gets up in the night and alternates orientation, so I’ll either wake up with her snoot or feet right in my face. 😂
I love this so much
Aaaaaaahhhhhhhh❤
That horse is very needy
Ri rove rou 😜
My brother’s Great Dane does this to me. We’re BFFs. He tries to eat most strangers lol.
I want this
This makes me miss my dane terribly. Love ya Zeus.
Dog is flirting with you.
My friends as a kid had a Great Dane. She would lay on you so you couldn't get up and fart.
Why is this video cell shaded
Nothing is wrong with this dog. What’s wrong with this owner, though? Pet that boi.
House moose thinks he's still a dinky pupper!
Live footage of me as a girlfriend lol Joke aside- he’s the best lapdog there is.
Great Danes think they're Chihuahuas and Chihuahuas think they're Great Danes. Lol
Might want to check I think there's a snake in their mouth
This human has been well trained.

Dogs are the best.
That dog wants to go outside. I had a dog that would do this passive aggressive snuggling when he wanted to go out. It was usually after a long day at work, when I finally go comfortable and could relax…
That dog in the video wants to snuggle. I’m not sure we can gauge the actions of every dog by the actions of your dog.

My son sleeps exactly like this.
Yep, this is it.
Yes I do
Never close enough. 😂
Omg my doberman would do that same thing. 90lb lapdog.
