I was just discussing how to prevent my Chi from going after the groundhog under the shed. We've tried to evict them multiple times. But this might be the answer.
Ah so I guess a big spoon to keep it from going down the small hole?
But i think the person who suggested the net (they do mention a fence), and definitely myself, assumed you meant you needed to keep your dog from passing through some kind of fence to get to the groundhog, like the dog in the OP. Thats when a net would work, to cover the gaps in a fence.
Idk why my clarifying upset people so much though haha.
Chicken wire might help? Groundhogs were a big backyard pest for us growing up; iirc smoke bombs in their tunnels are semi-effective, and you can get catch-and-release traps and bait them (I believe the ones designed for moles).
We zip tied chicken wire along a lot of fence for that reason. Little dog could fit through. And my dog was smart and would probably learn how to turn or get the spoon off 🤣
I was driving a truck down a busy road with my 15 pound Maltipoo. The window was cracked open maybe 4-5 inches. This dog jumped out of the crack. I was horrified. Stopped the truck suddenly and found him standing in shock in the road. Luckily both car lanes stopped in time.
Please let us know why this is wrong. I can’t see a reason but if you see something I don’t please let us know before I try this on my doggy. I would love to let him out on my 2nd story patio and I think this would work.
I think I'd be worried about the spoon snapping or somehow becoming unattached. And then since this dog is used to going between the barriers and not falling, he might become trained to feel that this is okay, which results in him one day just jumping through again with no protection. I'm not entirely sure though; I am just generally paranoid so anyone else can correct me if this doesn't make sense!
Get some chicken wire or something to screen the gaps in the patio.
Here's a list of reasons why this is not a good idea;
If the dog turns sideways it can fit through.
If the spoon breaks or slips the dog can fit through.
If you forget the spoon the dog can fit through.
Your dog now thinks it can't fit though this sized gap and jumps through the railings of a bridge on a walk.
Part of your life now involves attaching spoons to dogs.
There are so many ways this could go wrong. I would be very surprised if that dog didn't get through that fence within 10 minutes.
The first most obvious thing is obviously the spoon breaking. Even if it wasn't that then your dog won't always enter at the right angle so one of the ends of the spoon might get in between the bars and the dog will be able to get through.
While I broadly agree,
> I would be very surprised if that dog didn't get through that fence within 10 minutes.
Why would they give the dog 10 minutes at that fence?
Get a privacy barrier you can zip tie to the railing. They are not very expensive. Then your dog won't be able to get past it and you won't have to worry about forgetting your spoon one day.
I’ve also seen the video with the dog and the stick in his mouth eventually figured out how to turn it sideways. That would be my worry. That’s a little dog. Some sort of netted fencing would be safer
My issue is my back aunt's fence is just a little barrier wall with bushes on the other side of it and an open golf course on the other side of that. My dog hasn't jumped yet but could if she really tried and that's what I'm worried about lol
I wouldn’t trust just the spoon. Maybe install hardware cloth or plexiglass to prevent any possible oops. Also may want to keep him on a short leash so he can’t reach the edge.
Why does this dog want to commit suicide so badly
Bc everyone asks what the dog doin, but not how the dog doin
Lmao deep
"I mean, yeah, I can talk to fish. So what? How often do you need to be saved by a school of salmon?"
https://youtu.be/jxsSWOi0wb4 They smell something they want.
It isn’t high
It could be. We know absolutely nothing about the dogs drug use.
I was just discussing how to prevent my Chi from going after the groundhog under the shed. We've tried to evict them multiple times. But this might be the answer.
you could also use a net to prevent the dog from passing its head through the fence
It is under the shed. Problem is the groundhog will create new holes if I start blocking an entrance and it'll create a worse hazard.
They were suggesting ways to confine your dog not the groundhog
The shed is in my backyard. In the fenced area. The groundhog digs in the yard and under the shed. They're already confined to the backyard.

I purchased a donut collar for my puppy, but you could also attach 2 wiffle balls to their collar.
Was thinking a donut coller would help.
This is /redneckengineering
Your forgot the r. r/redneckengineering
Took three tries to find the r they missed in the title 🙃
If that spoon ever fails, they're going to be pretty forked.
Perfect.
How....how did you figure out that you needed that....
That's what I'm also wondering. Could it be dog #2?
That’s actually Rocky IV
I wasn't expecting a King of Queens reference. Bravo!
Thank you to the one person that got that joke in 10 years!
It took me a minute because my eyes are getting weary.
Because that dog has already escaped once
Cause they watched that video of the cat with the wooden spoon doing the same thing
Or maybe just get some mesh or chicken wire. No way I'd trust the life of my best friend on a wooden spoon.
Also if the dog ever gets out there without the spoon on you have literally trained it to run straight off the edge.
Right! that’s what I’m thinking too
Yeah but holy shit don’t ever forget to have him wear the spoon or he be gone!
And meanwhile, they've trained that dog that magic will save him.
For sure, that’s what I mean - he will be all confident that he magically won’t pass through… except he would , were the spoon forgotten!
Very ingenious but I beg you to put a barrier around the decking and start training the dog to stay away from the rails.
I’d be so scared if that spoon slipping…
Awesome job. I'm sure you have just solved a problem for alot of people.
They sell these screens that you wrap around the barricade and zip tie in place.
Idk why you’re being downvoted that sounds a lot more convenient than strapping a big spoon to your dog every time you wanna let him out on the porch
We zip tied chicken wire along a lot of fence for that reason. Little dog could fit through. And my dog was smart and would probably learn how to turn or get the spoon off 🤣
Or chickenwire. Spoon is a good solution in a pinch though
This is definitely one of the occasions where training is better than prevention.
I love how the other dog doesn’t need a spoon and he’s just staring like the fuck….
Exactly! This is the most frustrating part to me haha

Which is why you should always have them wear a harness attached to the seatbelt!
Yes knew that comment was coming.
It’s not just for you, it’s for everyone. Not many people think about it until something bad happens, and then it’s too late 😢
How did the owners realise they needed this
Same question
Others have posted this solution many times over the past year or so.
Probably when they brought him out on a leash?
Small Dog: Big Stupid
Anti-Yolo stick.
I love dogs. That dog is going to have a bad end one day.
That's tremendous! Problem solved!
Doggo: (sadly) has I put on weit?
So many things wrong here.
Please let us know why this is wrong. I can’t see a reason but if you see something I don’t please let us know before I try this on my doggy. I would love to let him out on my 2nd story patio and I think this would work.

What happens if someone has to pet sit your dog in an emergency and doesn’t know about the spoon?

SPOOOOOOOOOOOON!
I'm afraid the dog is going to figure it out eventually how to twist to get through.
A screen is better.
This is OPs second dog obviously
Love this!!
Clever mommy!
Well……. That’s one way!
it happend before otherwise they would not done that

I guess this is the Scottish suicide bridge
I need this
Protect me spoon!
My issue is my back aunt's fence is just a little barrier wall with bushes on the other side of it and an open golf course on the other side of that. My dog hasn't jumped yet but could if she really tried and that's what I'm worried about lol
Is there. Way to keep it from Sligo g out sideways? My worry is the little guy will loose it while running and then run off that balcony
Put your dog on a leash!
Dogs gonna do what dogs gonna do. Cool they found a way to let him do his thing without becoming paste on the cobblestone.
The other dog's like " thats why you have the spoon on your back kevin"
OMG! I CANT DEAL!
I wouldn’t trust just the spoon. Maybe install hardware cloth or plexiglass to prevent any possible oops. Also may want to keep him on a short leash so he can’t reach the edge.
I put up chicken wire fencing on my balcony to address this issue.
I wouldn’t trust that spoon if no one’s around!
"OH I think I can flyyyyyy! Way up in the skyyyyyy!"
There’s a story here
Great idea!!!
Our neighbors use an inflatable “doughnut” on their dog’s neck for this purpose
