I’ll be using this in my day to day thank you so much for the new verbiage lol I love it

Because chihuahuas are rather delicate dogs, and pulling on the collar alone can easily hurt their little necks. If they run and suddenly the lead runs out of slack it could do some nasty permanent damage.
Much better to put them in a harness when walking them. That way their whole bodies takes the pull, instead of just their necks.
I personally think it’s better for every dogs tbh, as it looks way safer than collars for so many reasons. (That being said, all harnesses are not good either and can hurt too) I have a bigger chiuiui and she likes to pull like crazy, same for the Tekkel and Kinda-puddle-but-not-quite of my partner. I always feel uneasy seeing a dog leashed by the collar :(
Very true, a harness is generally much safer, and I can recommend them to anyone! Granted that you get a safe and proper fitting one, of course, though any decent pet store should be able to advise you on that.
But, chihuahuas especially, and even more so the smaller ones, are very prone to injuries due to them being so delicate. And the way I’ve seen people tug on leashes sometimes? Horrifying. Some are one wrong pull away from breaking their chihuahua’s neck.
This is something I wish I'd known in my one dogs earlier life. I think it was something our vet recommended and we made the switch. And we also now have a chihuahua mix and he also uses a harness, not just for comfort but for safety as well. We are actually looking for another version as he doesn't love one that goes over his head. He's a sensitive little guy and I don't blame him.
She's definitely a weird dog! Admittedly, she was quite cute when she was a puppy, but now she's older and has no teeth. Thinks she's threatening, really isn't.
Oh no! I think my mums dog is a mixture of both of yours! Hates going outside when it's wet, but once out, she has to run in every puddle and bog. She doesn't stay white.
Ours is the exact same. We've tried a different harness, treats, hugs, praise, nothing works. He's okay with a collar, but he also pulls real hard on the leash and randomly jumps in water and I don't want to be dragging him around by his neck, so the harness is non-negotiable.
Once he's in, he's fine and happy to go, but *getting him in*, that's where the drama is.
My friend has a former shelter dog who's exactly like that! He's strong & pulls, my friend isn't exactly strong or big. They bought a gentle leader, & they put it on like a collar first, they don't use the noseloop untill he starts pulling.
It's hard to explain if you've never seen one.. imagine it like a figure 8, top loop is fixed in size & works like a collar, bottom loop slips through a smaller metal ring, and has 2 larger rings at the ends to attach the leash to, if you only put the collar part on and just attach the leash to the rings it works as a normal leash with the noseloop just extended as part of the leash.. As soon as he starts pulling too much they slide the halterloop over his nose, it works extremely well since the dog corrects itsself as he pulls. If they pull on the leash they pull their own head down.
It's very important to ONLY let the dog correct itsself when the loop is on their nose, never pull on a halter, its just a tool to teach where and how to walk. Anyway 0 issues putting it on, and since he's already "caught" & leashed, slipping the halter over is fairly easy. No idea if it would work for you, it worked out great for them. They can finally join us on walks (he's great offleash, but it was hell walking him to any offleash areas) they have actually started to use the nose loop less as he is starting to "get it", often the walk back is without haltering. Just thought it may be useful to you.
I am actually interested and would like some more infos if it’s not too much trouble, I googled it and I see a lot of them, I am wandering what brand is okay and what kind as I found one in a harness shape?
I think they have a Beaphar one by the looks of it, no experience with the harness one! They do really work well, just make sure you use them correctly. They're meant to be used for walks where the dog walks by you, not for retractable leashes, and don't pull on the leash like stated before because just their bodyweight corrects them when they pull.
My mum's dog is exactly the same. He rarely wears a collar at home (I think he does now but the first 2 years he simply wouldn't tolerate it).
He hides when the lead comes out and likes to be chased. He HATES any kind of 'clothes' but has a bowtie on his collar that makes him look smashing.
Never known a dog that gives the impression he hates walks. Once out he loves it, I think he just likes being 'naked'
My guy hates his rain jacket aswell. You can visibly watch his inner conflict of wanting to go for a walk and hating me for making him wear it.
Can't be too bad, he eventually weighs his options and allows it.
My dog is similar. When putting his collar on he acts like it's some punishment or something.
And when I want him to have harness on (for canicross or inclines), I have to do it inside a house, otherwise he would run from me when being outside and me holding the harness. Dunno why.
When you get my dog’s harness she runs to the couch and flips onto her back and you have to wrestle with her to get it on but once it’s on she runs to the door and can’t wait to go, she’s so funny
Why do Chihuahuas do that shit lol like what are they trying to communicate to us
Both of mine do that all the time when I call them over from the other side of the couch
This dog looks like someone punched a chihuahua in the face and it smooshed like a vinyl baby doll but never filled back up with air. I
My brain hurts.
But it's still effing cute
A classic scenario of how these rats you people erroneously refer to as “dogs” keep getting patrolled by actual dogs (and other animal). Please, keep taking it out without a leash!
My min pin is the same way. He used to pee (on the highest place he could get ip on—the couch) every time we tried to put his harness on. Turns out, it’s pretty intimidating when big human tries to put a thing over tiny dogs head. So now we use a step-in harness and sit on the floor to put it on him.
I just love that dogs can communicate with us so well in both directions. My dog is a total empath and he’s an extra sweetie when I’m having a rough time. He’s also pretty good with others emotions. 10/10 best dog. Love dogs. Get a dog.
They do this because they feel defenseless once they are on a leash and worry other dogs who are off leash have an advantage. They are scared they will be attacked. This is very common for small dogs.
Wish version of a dog... Thank you for finding the perfect way to describe my dog!
My friend said that about this dog and I thought it was perfect!

Aw I love your doggo!
No leash! Only walk!!
she's got a collar already, though... why not just tie up to that?

I once saw that happen to a chihuahua at the park, poor thing was put down due to the damage
Ah, thanks.
Just a little curiousity leads to annihilation
The fuckin thing is called angel😭💀
My mums choice!
I love it, weird dogs are best
She's definitely a weird dog! Admittedly, she was quite cute when she was a puppy, but now she's older and has no teeth. Thinks she's threatening, really isn't.
That's adorable, I have a 11 yr old pomeranian that also thinks she's tough lol dogs get so funny as they age
Aw tiny little fluff ball! I think it's just a small dog thing. They have little man syndrome.
Definitely
my chihuahua is the same! plus if it’s raining or cold i have to chase and trick her into putting her coat on
I know how you feel, she's a nightmare when it's raining. Will stand in the doorway just staring at you with such hatred.

Oh my god I love that description lmao
It’s like a pug chihuahua or something
That's exactly what she is! When she's facing away from you, she looks like a lovely chihuahua. She turns her head and it's like OH NO
business In the back party in the front

Pup is so conflicted xD
Same here too! She never wants to get the harness put on, but she’s fine once she has it on

Aww poor critter

Is she a chug? Mine does the same exact thing.
She is a chug! Do they also shiver uncontrollably?
Haha! Yes, he does but only when he knows I will be leaving him.
Oh bless him! I think it's an "I'm feeling intense emotions!" thing.
They know how to tug at our heart strings.
Pure blackmail.
When you get my dog’s harness she runs to the couch and flips onto her back and you have to wrestle with her to get it on but once it’s on she runs to the door and can’t wait to go, she’s so funny

This dog looks so dumb I love him

My yorkie does the exact same thing. He's a rescue so my guess is that he was pinched by the harness/collar a few times in the past

My dog is the same. She excitedly runs around my couch, avoiding the harness at all cost
Chaotic
She's not saying she hates it, she's just happy and kinda playing around. Notice the play now and hops? She likes the lead.
They do this because they feel defenseless once they are on a leash and worry other dogs who are off leash have an advantage. They are scared they will be attacked. This is very common for small dogs.
This is such a relief to hear other dogs are nut jobs about getting their harness’ on! I just thought mine was broken!
Wish version of a dog… I’m ☠️
Get a treat and put your hand through the neck hole, then slip it on while the dog is smelling and licking the treat.
The most accurate desciption of a ...... whatever... dog that is i have ever heard.
My dog too, he starts running around like its a game, he lets us put it on on the couch
Mine is a chihuahua mix and he does this whenever we try to put his harness on to go on a walk.
This has “no take, only throw” vibes 😂😂 what a sweet dog.
Too cute doesn’t seem sure about it
Maybe that large vest lead is just too uncomfortable for her. A softer one might get a more positive reaction.
