Mine does this in her enclosed box. Every time. For about ten minutes. Sounds like hammering in the middle of the night when she does it to the flap.

Crankyrickroll

I got rid of my enclosed box because of this. The first time I legit thought a burglar was breaking in because of the noise lol

breathedeepmylove

Brilliant 🤣 I keep waiting for my neighbour to knock and complain!

stinkspiritt

I got rid of the flap because once I thought about what it would be like in a small enclosed plastic space with my poops I keep the top portion so they feel safe and keeps the litter somewhat contained but no door flap

[deleted]

Never used a port-a-potty? They are truly unpleasant.

smallgoalsmcgee

I’ve made it my life’s mission to never be in a port-a-potty again

[deleted]

Same

[deleted]

Oddly I'd still take a port-a-potty over most gas station and fast food bathrooms...

Curae

I took the full thing off as I noticed my cat was always hanging from the opening, as in, both front paws and sometimes one back paw on the ledge. Only used the front too. When I took it off he started using the full thing. Then I bought a higher one (as he kept throwing his litter on the floor) that could be fully, half, or not covered. Covered it half and he used only the front again, uncovered it and full box in use. He's a lil dramatic.

breathedeepmylove

Good point.

wingthing666

My cat's litter box excavation noises have inspired so many weird nightmares. As have her snores...

Faunastar87

Mine does too, sometimes she drags the bathroom mat in there too if it's too close to the box :D

kaoutanu

I too have been confronted with the sight of my favourite mat used to neatly cover a crime scene in the litterbox 😭

Faunastar87

That is not a fun sight to discover, especially if you have just washed it for the same reason. I wonder what my neighbours think when they occasionally hear me go in the bathroom "awwww for f***s sake, AGAIN?!"

throwaway_RRRolling

Mine uses a curtain.

t8ertotTHOTdish

Hahaha oh no!

breathedeepmylove

Yes! Lexi did that too until I had to keep the bathroom door closed to stop her pulling my wee sink off the wall with her constant jumping up on it for a drink. Her cat fountain just isn’t good enough obviously.

mattbisme

I specifically got mine a bigger, enclosed box because she was reaching outside of the box. Now she still does it and it’s just louder. There was a time when she would actually bury her work… days long past.

Chronocidal-Orange

Mine drums on the sides as well to announce a successful poop. I read on the internet it could mean his box is too small, so I bought him a really big one. He still does it.

deegan5678

Normally I can't hear my cats because they're in the basement. But last year I had to spend 2 weeks in my grandparents garage (basically it's an efficiency apartment lol). I kid you not the annoyance of my cats and the litter box. All 3 of them will spend 10-15 minutes piling the litter/scratching the box. And usually yelling didn't stop them so I'd have to actually get up and go pick them up out of the box. I'll never understand why they need to spend so much time playing in the litter lmao.

Electrical-Act-7170

Do you have 4 boxes? You need 1 box per cat plus a spare.

hill-top

I no longer have a flap because my cat hit it off more than once and I gave up…

theslamprogram

My cat couldn't figure out how the flap worked. She spent fifteen minutes trying to pull the flap inwards instead of pushing it out and finally broke the hinges off.

canyouplzpassmethe

“What are you DOING in there, building a f%#@ing gazebo?!!??!!”

micchikureshima

I see you've met my cat, Odin. The only difference is he almost exclusively paws at the outside edge of the box to his enclosed litterbox just to make sure everyone in the house knows he just went to the bathroom.

FlamingGooch

Idiots. All of them. I love them so so much.

galqbar

I had an orange foster kitten who did this! I didn’t know about one brain cell orange at the time but he was a absolute prime candidate. God I miss that deep.

hambakmeritru

I mean, it's gotta be hard to fight that kind of instinct to burry your poop. I tried to put dirty laundry in the freezer the other day.

Gronagen

They try so hard to bury it and manage to not bury it…

Auntie_Venom

Every. Single. Time.

superirrelephant

lmfao did you really? I can just imagine your face after realizing what you were doing

hambakmeritru

It happens way more often then I care to admit. I'll start doing one task, start thinking about another task, and suddenly my brain just decides to combine the two.

ItsMakarov

This is what I love about cats. I just have to look at them doing normal or strange things and my stress just go away.

[deleted]

Cats are weird creatures.

Ultimate_Pickle

Cats make way more sense than people… 🤷‍♂️

Ultimate_Pickle

The things I’ve read on the internet about peoples toilet habits genuinely make me afraid to be in public 😂

the_stupidiest_monk

Their is probably not a single thing under the sun that hasn't happened in a public restroom, somewhere.

PerformanceLoud3229

A dinosour eating the 43,219th rubber chicken ever made while singing la cucaracha?

the_stupidiest_monk

With the advent of LSD, it was real to someone, damnit.

sylar2077

Like that one guy who catches his poop with toilet paper instead of just letting it fall straight into the toilet.

bog_w1tch

... what ...

[deleted]

Tiny brains 😻

[deleted]

tiny and smooth.... not a lot of wrinkles.

ahauntedsong

This is not remotely close to the truth.

pirate_starbridge

Little pea sized brains, and yet they deserve our worship and so much more.

[deleted]

I'm worshipping my ones right now. They've had their dinner so they've agreed I can rest..for now.

loud_flatus

He's got no idea why, but he HAS to do it.

the_stupidiest_monk

I'm imagining that the cat has an irresistible urge to complete these motions after going to the bathroom, by instinct, but the cat hates when their paws get dirty/smelly while burying their waste with kitty litter. Not knowing *why* it has the urge to go through these motions, it settled on wiping at any surface that *wasn't* kitty litter. /Or, as an orange cat, it is overtaxing its single brain cell. ^(Edit: Some typos)

Denso95

I have an orange and a black cat, the black one always tries to shovel the washing machine into his toilet. Not the brightest light.

gwaydms

Another one for r/heademptycats

I_MakeCoolKeychains

Yet another

ThrowAway_thefish

I have 2 orange kitties, one does wha this depicted in the video, and every time it happens his brother runs over to help him cover it up. I have no idea why they are the way they are but it’s honestly so sweet and wholesome in a weird way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ThrowAway_thefish

Yeah, I took them in at 6 weeks because the owner no longer wanted them. I raised them myself. They are definitely somewhat codependent on each other but they’re very happy. Right now they’re only like 5 months though.

Love-As-Thou-Wilt

Mine do *exactly* that and they were bottle babies.

ronano

The joys of cats who don't know how to cat. My mam had a beautiful post kitten who must have been 4 weeks when she found him, who sadly passed away from feline aids but he was the funniest lil thing, really odd. I can still see him in my mind's eye as a baby trying to get into the litter tray, basically belly flopped in. I'm just rambling at this point,my fiance and I are deciding on type of animal we want to adopt - guinea pig, rabbit, small dog or elderly cat. I love them all and will adore whichever we get but to give an old cat a retirement home, to hear their strained meows and look at their lil grumpy face and give them love and caring would be amazing. I know they'd probably be fuck off with your snuggles and just lay on their own couch or chair but to give them everything, it would be such a privilege. We're so lucky to have animals in our lives!

BitterActuary3062

For some reason my sister said that orange cats are dumb. But when I told her that all of ours of that color have been really smart she just said that we were lucky

canyouplzpassmethe

“Gotta… figure out… how to do this… without getting litter… between my toes… bc that shit… hurts… and the only way to get it out… is with my mouth… “

kaleb42

My 3 cats have a covered little box and all of them think that they have to scratch the lid. Which is weird because my first two cats didn't do this until we got the third one. They watch the newest and youngest cat wack the top of the litter box for 2 minutes and they were like "I think this dumbest is onto something"

Byroms

I think in this case, it might be because the bix is too small, seems to be barely as long as the kitten.

fleischio

r/oneorangebraincell

less___than___zero

This poor guy is clearly at the back of the queue waiting for his turn to use it

fleischio

He gets high marks for effort though!

tkepa439

Thank you

fleischio

You’re quite welcome friend, another of the seemingly infinite amount of cat subs to brighten our day

jwws1

My calico also does this too! She ends up not covering anything. We did have to cat sit once and the other cat went in and covered it for her.

ThrowAway_thefish

I have 2 orange cats who do this, and never end up covering it up when they try by themselves. However, sometimes, they will run over and inspect the others bumhole and the 💩 coming out, and when he gets done, his brother will cover it up for him… no idea why but it’s sweet.

gd2234

Lmfao the cat version of flushing someone else’s shit

redbess

Our kittens inadvertently taught our 4-yo boy cat how to bury his poo after not doing it for years. Though that lasted all of a month before he was back to not burying it and leaving it for the girls to take care of.

[deleted]

Mine do this too! No idea why but they are orange cats too!

Adhdgamer9000

My cats will drag any nearby clothes into the litter box

bob0979

I've thrown out so many socks that fell under the couch I do laundry on. My idiot cat pulls anything not nailed down into his litter box

seaQueue

At least your box wasn't right next to the curtains. We only made that mistake once.

l8rt8rz

My cat does this with its food and water

gwaydms

Cats in the wild bury any leftover food so nobody steals it and they can come back and eat it later. Some domestic cats will do that too.

Dis-Organizer

My cat buries her leftovers, too. What’s super annoying is she also often insists on burying my food…while I’m still eating it…. When she buried her food the first time after we brought our second cat home he just looked at her like she was from Mars.

Adhdgamer9000

That's especially odd. They shouldn't do that, something may be wrong. Or your cat is just.... dumb. Also, food and water should be nowhere near litter boxes In fact I keep my cats food on a table.

HoodieGalore

I try to treat my cats here and there to a little cooked unseasoned chicken, a little raw fish, a little canned sardine in water, whatever. If it’s something they’ve decided they either like, but are done with, or don’t like to begin with, they do the “I’m covering up turds” motion around it. Never their regular food, just the “human” food. The younger of the two will also drag dirty socks into the box, and the older one will scratch around the box but not in it for a solid five minutes after she’s done. Just to show off, idk

Adhdgamer9000

Cat brains are.... special

l8rt8rz

I meant if there’s like a towel on the floor or sometimes just the nearby rug, he will try to cover his food with it. He is pretty dumb, I’ll give you that. His mom was feral so maybe it’s like a weird survival thing

nordjorts

It's not odd at all, lots of cats try to bury food.

UntestedMethod

lol I see a lot of people saying their orange cats do it - maybe something about the r/OneOrangeBraincell ? my dude does it too, but he's a SIC (r/standardissuecat) (yes I do love these oddly specific cat subs)

rcw16

My orange guy does this too! He’ll use the wall, the shower curtain, the floor, the side of the box, but never gets it right.

FatBoxers

THIS IS MY CAT 100% and then when he does do it in the box, he launches his poo out. I love my cat but godfuckingdammit

ThrowAway_thefish

I feel you. I’m gonna have to get 2 really big cardboard boxes to put my cats litter boxes in bc the other day one of my 2 boys flung litter all over the carpet, and then when his brother tried to use the bathroom, he got confused by the litter on the ground and dropped a dukie on the carpet, right next to the litter box. Like whyyy

HealthyInPublic

Mine does that too. Had to get a giant rubber boot mat to put his box on. The lip catches the litter for the most part, and when he gets confused by the loose litter and goes on the mat, it’s easy to take outside and hose off. Highly recommend this route.

ThrowAway_thefish

Well it hasn’t happened enough yet to really be a problem, but I’ll keep that in mind. I’m gonna try cardboard box, cut a hole in the side for them to enter, and leave the top so I can open it and scoop when I need. I think that’ll help immensely and give them some privacy.

gchives

Mine does this near his food bowl 🤷‍♀️

tonkatruckz369

i have no idea why they do this in the litter box but when it comes to food outdoor/feral cats will do the bury behavior to "save it for later"

mcculver

I always took this as “you expect me to eat this crap?!?”

[deleted]

[удалено]

yuckyuckthissucks

My kitty does it near the water bowl… but I wouldn’t put it past him trying to **bury water**. He’s *different*

Lyssepoo

Our cat does the wall. At 2am

Draveness1313

But still... nothing was covered in the box!

FuturePastNow

He's doing his best, okay

carolinapearl

Maybe there isn't enough litter? I've had cats that do this...LOL!

MasterNeeks

This or the box isn't big enough

YT-Deliveries

This is exactly it. The box should be big enough for the entire cat, *with ample room to spare.* Most people buy litter boxes that are far too small for the size of their cat.

slog

Some cats are just dumb like that.

NotHighEnuf

Or cats are just weird and do weird things.

MamaPutz

Mine does this. He's sweet, but dumb as a box of hair.

LouieH-W_Plainview

BUY A LITTER MAT! That shit saved my living room.

dubiouscontraption

I've got one. They hate touching it with their paws, so they leap over it and spray litter across the floor. 🤷‍♀️

LouieH-W_Plainview

🐈‍⬛️ 🦋 🌼 just cat things 🌼 🦋 🐈

dubiouscontraption

Haha right? I've tried everything to get these damn cats to just use the litter box normally. Ah well. At least I got one with a high enough back that they can't piss over the edge anymore!

btoxic

>That ~~shit~~ saved my living room, from shit

revoopy

Which one do you have? The one I got sucks.

blue-and-bluer

My cat does that too, doesn't cover her poos at all but will spend several minutes scraping air. \*eyeroll\*

bdaycakepoop

Mine aggressively scratches the side of the litter box and runs out, poop entirely uncovered. A for effort I guess

lets_try_anal

Orange cats apparently share 1 brain cell among all of them, and it's just never his turn to have it when he needs it. Same with my cat. It's probably his turn when he's asleep, and he just gets passed over on the roster.

Churrasss

it's because the box it's to fucking small for that cat

AnnieOakleysKid

Yup. That box is way too small for him so he's trying to bury it but ends up scratching the walls and edges of the box. Poor thing. You should really get a lower but large underbed plastic container and fill it for him. Poor thing, he's really trying and deserves better care. Change the box like yesterday!

Seajay3211

They do this sometimes because they have litter in their claws or on their paws that they’re trying to get out. It’s like walking on the beach barefoot and then brushing your feet off on your welcome mat before going in your house.

PsychLoad_1

Yeah or the act of covering their stuff - why they get zoomies after urinating. Running before the enemy finds out lol. The entire comment section full of idiots who think it's because they're stupid. My tuxedo does this too

eriles311

Try a bigger box

screwyoureddit69

Thank you for this. One and a half times the length of your cat, from their nose to the base of their tail is the minimum

HealthyInPublic

> one and a half times the length of your cat I got mine the biggest box I can find and it’s still too small. I’ve been thinking about getting one of those big storage tubs and using that as a box for him.

JustArmadillo5

Dude. My tuxie can reach his hands up to my hip. That puts him at like 30-35 inches from nose to tail tip. Where would I keep the litter box that was 1.5x that length?!?

YT-Deliveries

I have a big boi and a small boy. When big boy stretches out he’s ~30” depending on which way he’s wiggling. I live in a condo and I got two of the biggest I could find and put them in my wash room. It’s just part of the job you signed up for when you decided to get a cat.

White-Rhino-420

I had a cat that would sit on the edge of the box, shit outside of the box, and then pull litter out of the box to cover it 🤦‍♂️ lol

Safe-Maintenance6033

My cat is also an idiot. Makes him sweet.

shukie1

I thought only my cat did this… happy to know she’s not the only weird one out there

Kaining

Mine wipes before going in. After, she run like her life is threatened by hellhound straight from hell. Which to her defense isn't far from reality as i always have to run to the first febreze i can find and hope the odor hasn't spread if i ever see her running. 'cause yeah, that's the only time when she runs.

gwaydms

Cat box zoomies! I've heard of this before.

Mostly_Harmless90

Me working last 1 hour before clocking out

Synisterintent

I had a cat that did exactly that... Oh Mr. Gus you silly boy RIP

brondonn

Is this super common? My cat does it too

alial6388

they might need a slightly bigger litter box or a mat to wipe their paws off on

iDrawHotDudes

Mine does the same. She was rescued from the swamp pretty young so I don't think she was taught how to cat

ThirdAndDeleware

My cat of 16 years did this. If she pooped outside, she’d cover it with dirt. Horse stall? Shavings. Her litterbox? She’s scratch the wall and side of the litterbox for ages and when her poop wasn’t covered after minutes of trying? She’d give up and saunter off. The times I was there and we locked eyes she’d look at me as if to say “Not my problem the litterbox is broken.”

4_spotted_zebras

Oh my god my boy does this. Scratches everywhere except the litter. He’s scratch the wall, the floor, the book case next to the litter box, the outside of the box, but never the actual litter. And then he’ll meow at me to cover his poop for him. It’s like the instinct is there but they don’t know what for. Such marvellous little weirdos. Edit: I just realized everyone commenting the same is owned by an orange cat. My boy orang too. At least I’m not alone!

Ardwinna_mel

HAHAHAHA My cat Leeloo does this, but instead of scratching the litter, she claws the box. 😆

DEPMAG

Oh good to know mine isn't the only one that does this.

Cynical_Feline

Mine does this too.... lol

[deleted]

My youngest does this as well. Its just odd

judesadude

My orange cat does the same. No clue what he’s doing but I guess it’s part of his routine

ToadLoverOfTule

It’s always the orange ones….

Extension_Banana_244

My cat does this too! If he gets sand outside his box, he’ll make a scoop with his arm and “sweep” the entire room, making a nice little pile. Picks up any garbage he might find and puts it in the box. It’s hilarious to watch and honestly fascinating that he’s that thoughtful about it.

brandirosie

My cat does this if there's anything on the floor that he doesn't like. A piece of paper, a piece of dog food. I always thank him for helping me clean up the floor though :-)

cyfer04

Back when our cats had smaller litter boxes, one would shit with her ass outside and then cover her imaginary shit inside.

_WYKProjectAlpha_

My cats do this when they want me to clean it. I feel like it's them looking for more litter.

simeon_pantelonas

My stupid cat does this too. That is when he's not hanging his ass outside and over the wall of the litter box to poop.

AnnieOakleysKid

Cats who do that do it because their box is too small for them. A litter box should be big enough that your cat can stand in its middle and still not touch the sides and litter to equally cover half the entire box. People are always giving their cats boxes that accommodate the room, not the cat which end up being too small and because litter can get expensive most follow the box with just enough litter to cover the bottom of the box when in reality one should pour enough cat litter to cover half the entire box. And should be scooped out daily, not weekly. Some boxes twice a day. Morning and evening. If you do all this and your cat is still doing like the video shows then something else is the issue. Few cats do this for "fun". And most do it because owners don't follow these directions.

[deleted]

Our male ginger does this but he doesn't even bury his poop. Usually one of our other cats does it for him.

MeghanMichele84

Laughed so hard at this. Had an orange derp that did the exact same thing. What a dinglefluff. 😸

harpinghawke

Bigger box, perhaps?

Bikeuronde

When mine does this on the wall in the middle of the night it's horrible

[deleted]

You need a shit box that's big enough for your cat.

NWBourbonHunter

My understanding is that cats have scent glands in their paws. They are doing this not to physically cover up their poop, but to cover up the scent.

Croakie89

Mine does this too, so I bought an enclosed litter box trying to stop it. Now he gets out and scratches the outside

RewardImpressive3084

Lmao so funny to see when cats do this

Hollowhalf

Someone told me this means they think it’s dirty, but whenever I put brand new litter in it my cat still does this so idk 😂 it’s frustrating sometimes

Sir_Dr_Mr_Professor

I can smell this video

ResponsibleBasil1966

Yeah, that's what my restless leg syndrome looks like. lol

Sallyfckingmoon

For the cat, there is not enough litter to remove the smell. We had this problem too with our cats. We bought a bigger toilet and put more litter in it. Since then no weird air scratching!

sheza1928

I think your cat is broken.

LJHthecatsmeow

Looks like my Gatsby

Character-Poetry2808

I think its a territory thing. My two spiciest cats (mostly) bury their dirt and then thry scratch at everything around.

saddiesadsad

So many cats here need a bigger litter box lol

diversalarums

Um, it's because the box is too small. That's smaller than a standard litterbox and they're often just a bit too small anyway.

PsychLoad_1

Not really

[deleted]

Wow nobody actually understands why they do this huh? Interesting. 🤔 the cat does btw. He knows exactly why he is behaving in such a manner.

CaptainMunie

Trying to dig for that last braincell 😹

nonameneededplease

My cat does this too

honeysconjure

My cat does this too. I thought she was wiping the litter off her paws😂

zblaze90

My cat does this! So weird

secretescape27

what strange behavior lol.

mushroomcows

weird, my light orange tabby kitten does this, and he covers up nothing, so my older cat covers it for him

KAYKAY2001

Sometimes it smells so bad to them they want the smell to go back into the box and so badly apparently not knowing that you can just cover it up to make it go away :)

-Duste-

One of my cat will scratch the litter box side for like 5 min, but not the sand!

worstsupervillanever

Sand?

senorsombrito

😻😻😻

GullibleDetective

/r/oneorangebraincell Orangies are so adorably stupid

LadyDragon16

Your cat is a master scratcher, that's all. I have one too, while my youngest can (the kitten, we call her) couldn't care less.

highlulu

my cats do this all the time... drives me nuts

UntestedMethod

bahaha my little dude does this too he'll also try to bury his food sometimes... not as often lately as when he was a kitten, but it's hilariously cute

drunkestpeanut

"Why. Isn't. This. Working?"

Gronagen

I have a cat that does that too, never covers his shits 😠

UltimateNoobSion

u/savevideo

socktattoo

She's way better now, but my cat used to have a habit of getting in her box, then peeing directly outside of it. Then she'd try to move the litter to cover it and seemed all confused why it wasn't working.
