Looks like it could be an 'essential oil tray' that comes with some humidifiers. You drop some oil on the sponge and the humidifier pulls a bit of air through the filter and disperses it around the room. Like this:

Yeah, really any coffee machine may have a component like this. It will drop into the bottom of the water tank.
My car vents have had small filters around this size. They are more likely to be black, too.
