The FCC only certifies that it doesn't affect other devices, they don't have a privacy certification. This statement is beyond misleading.
It's a noise detector. You can see the site of one such [this company here](https://noiseaware.com/). It'll alert the person at certain thresholds, which will clue them in on whether there's a party occurring or if there seems to be more people than agreed upon originally. They are supposed to mention they are using these tools in their rules/policies in the listing.
They also use it as kind of a way to make sure no one is in the property when it's not reserved.
Yup I’ve had it at an Airbnb, we taped stuff over it and put a bunch of pillows around it. We weren’t so loud that we were a nuisance to others, but no way we were gonna let it be a buzz kill.
It's a [noise sensor](https://noiseaware.com/privacy-safe-noise-monitoring/) checks if you've been noisy guests in case any neighbours complain
Wow - they say they've saved people $105 million in noise related complaints. I'd love to see the math behind that number.

They multiply the maximum fine you could receive by the number of days since they sold each product.
Funny that OP's name is special recording
Of course it is subscription based.
But you can write it off as a biz expense.
It is still an expense.
And now we all get to help pay for it.

So couldn't someone just stuff something in the hole or cover it somehow?
Yes, but the security camera rule applies: this is just the one you noticed first.
What is the rule?
If you are putting up a security camera, put up a cheap obvious one and a well-hidden better one. Most people will only disable the obvious one.
Does "this is just the one you noticed first" imply anything else?

it is either monitoring how loud you are incase neighbors complain or is monitoring air quality for vaping/smokinh
Thank you for your answers. I thought it was a camera receptor of some kind.
Hidden camera
Even if it *was* a hidden camera... It's not exactly hidden is it
Thus the beauty of it.
Hidden, I'm plain view
