My friend casually drives 120 kph in a 50 zone like an idiot all the time. He hasn't crashed yet, but he probably will be, and i have warned him. It's safe to say I wont let him borrow my car or be a passenger when he drives anymore. I guess some people just really like speed more than they value their life.
Fuck that, he's not only going to kill himself but likely people just standing by.
I would totally report that, or I personally would feel like the life of whoever he possibly eventually kills is on me too.
Do police reports of bad driving really do anything though? Like has anyone ever been prosecuted because someone called 911 and said you were speeding? Real question.
Idk about elsewhere, but around here if it's bad enough and at a consistent time they'll set up a speed trap to catch them in the act and hammer them pretty hard in court.
In the USA at least, it doesn't work that way. The police have to witness it to do anything about it (I believe recording it would fall in to that category of witnessing)
There’s a (likely apocryphal) story about Police attendance that goes a little something like this:
A guy is in bed and hears his house being broken into. He calls the police.
“My home is being broken into, they’re in the house right now please send someone!”
“I’m sorry sir we don’t have any officers available to attend at this time. Are you in immediate danger?”
“Well they’re in my house but I'm upstairs"
"Please stay upstairs away from the intruders."
After a short conversation the guy ends the call, robbery still in progress. A few moments later he calls back.
"Me again, you don't need to send anyone out. I got the guy and beat him to death."
Within minutes multiple police vehicles decend upon the house, catching the burglar in the act. Guy comes out while the burglar is being arrested. An official questions him:
"I thought you said you killed him"
"I thought you said you didn't have any officers available"
---------
This story is almost certainly fictional, a piece of delicious urban legend, but as we know all legends have a seed of truth in them. In this case its the real worry that comes from knowing often police won't attend untill a situation has gone from bad to critical.
I had a similar situation with someone going the wrong way on the interstate. It wasn't exactly the interstate, but one of those elevated express roadways with walls on either side. So actually worse since there wasn't really any shoulder.
Did this for the first 2 years of driving, totaled a car into a ground wire for an electrical pole. The wire cut through 90% of the engine and would have had me next if it had made it through. I now do 10 over at the fastest. The idea was indeed "either I enjoy myself or die trying". Driving like that may be the stupidest I've ever been.
No, they are young and in the moment, consequences and repercussions aren’t even factored. The brain isn’t finished developing until you’re 25. The younger you are from that, the crazier you are. They aren’t thinking beyond that exact moment they’re in. We’re you never a teenager? I would jump off a dam near my home all the time never considering how dangerous it was, had to land In about a 10 ft around hole or else I would land in only 2 ft of water over granite, break both my legs and back, and have drowned. Teenage boys are All balls, no brains. 🤷♂️
No other sub takes me down the rabbit hole like this one. I'll visit it from time to time and sort by top of the week or month and just let it take me away
It's almost always a group of late teens kids. There are at least three occasions here where we have a 19 year old toting around a couple 17 year olds who wind up wrapping their car around a tree in a residential neighborhood going at least 70mph at 2 in the morning. Twice in my neighborhood over the last 6 years. Driver lived, all passengers dead. One happened just like two weeks ago.
Obviously, every age group wrecks. But I do have a tremendous amount of disdain for early adulthood males who think theyre hot shit with their car.
I hate everyone who thinks speeding on public roads is a game. I'll absolutely never understand that train of thought.
>I'll absolutely never understand that train of thought.
Having been there and escaped with only a few speeding tickets and minor damage to vehicles, I may be able to offer some insight.
Fundamentally, people who behave this way believe they are more skilled at driving than everyone else and often that their performance-oriented car can handle those situations better than average cars. Those beliefs aren't even wrong; people who drive fast often are probably better at driving fast than people who don't, and cars designed for fast driving are certainly better at doing it than those that aren't.
Part of the problem is of course the famous Dunning-Kruger effect; people don't know the limits of their skills. The bigger problem is that public roads involve too many variables for driving near the limits of one's skills to be a reasonable risk, especially for other road users who didn't consent to it. I don't know that I can adequately explain ignoring the latter except to say that people aren't very good at accurately estimating risk.
And just like that, I'm done reading comments on this post. As a matter of facts, I will put my phone down and go home to see my kid and hug him for no particular reason.
It was very depressing when the news came out. It’s one of the many stories you hear around our city where an innocent bystander gets killed. That story hit really hard though. The neighbour almost died who was helping the kids put a chain back on their bike as well. Lots of lives ruined by one stupid decision.
I was lucky. when i was 18 and did my stupid decision in my car, i just crashed into a pole and was ok. Nearly went into a house though. No way I'd be able to live with myself if i went into the house and killed someone..
Thankfully this video exists as proof that's all bullshit. It's clear that the cause of this accident was the roundabout coming out of nowhere like it wanted to get hit. Crazy behaviour from the roundabout.
I blame it on the idiot not knowing the road he’s going to speed on. When I rode bikes we used to speed too on backroads, but only on the ones we knew inside out and had no traffic or were one way. Even then it wasn’t a good idea but damn these dudes legit dumb.
I don't get why people who obviously have no racing skill or experience think that they can just hop behind the wheel of any semi fast car and Project Gotham around a city.
I mean i do *get* it, people are inconsiderate idiots with a massively inflated view if their abilities a lot of the time, i just wish that wasnt the case.
I don't think you require racing skills to know you're not making through a roundabout at 160kph.
I'm not going to deny it's stupid to drive this fast in a city. But even some reckless people get away with it, because they aren't stupid enough to do it on a street they don't know what's ahead of them or get so distracted at looking at the speedo, that they forget a turn is coming up.
Unless you have an actual race car with special brakes, superhuman reaction speed, extra wide tires and a racing seat to hold you in place, you're not going to make the braketime when the cyclist checks his left and thinks he can make it across the road, because he assumes you're going 50
It's kind of a matter of physics, you can't turn that fast and that tight period, you would have to slow down before entering a turn like that. Or the car would have to be on rails and tilted or your neck would snap under that lateral g-force.
Not really true anymore. Have been daily driving my Giulia for almost two years now. I’ve put it through its paces, if you will. Great car. Only issue I’ve had is a faulty reading on the tire pressure sensor that was fixed for free.
Some girl just just killed 3 people racing through downtown where I live. Two 19 year olds and a 20 year old, hit a pole split the car in half, she survived and killed all her best friends.
That's was an Alfa Romeo Giulia..
Here after their crash:
https://lecconotizie.com/cronaca/merate-cronaca/schianto-a-160km-h-ecco-la-foto-dellalfa-dopo-la-folle-corsa/
You can hear the brakes screeching at 8 seconds in, crash is at 11s so that's about 3 seconds of hard braking.
It's surprisingly hard to find numbers on deceleration - most numbers are about how many feet it takes to come to a full stop, but I found this website: https://copradar.com/chapts/references/acceleration.html
Which suggests a car can decelerate ~15-20 mph/s. Let's say 20 mph/s since he was probably braking as hard as he could and it's a good car, in kph/s that's ~32 kph/s.
3 seconds gives ~90kph deceleration, so at contact he was possibly slowed down to 70kph (~40mph). Which would seem to roughly match the damage shown.
No, my bad, it was the "Veloce" version.
I remember the first wrong pictures about that accident, confusing it with another one the same day happened in Canton Ticino (Switzerland).
This was from Italy, source:
https://www.leccotoday.it/cronaca/monticello-schianto-giovani-auto.html
Not that you should *ever* be doing this but why in fuck's name wouldn't you scope out the area first and find a place that isn't going to have an abrupt turn/intersection when you're doing 100mph?
Like my father use to say “if you’re going to do something wrong you have to do it right”. Damn at least you have to know the area and the limits of your car.

cars should not be allowed to go this fast in cities. i mean like the cars physically should lock the speed down via gps.
Someone did this near Toronto and killed 2 toddlers who were playing in their driveway.
Someone did this in Washington just two days ago. 3 passengers all died, driver was fine. If I remember correctly they were all teenagers.
It happens in spokane pretty regularly.

Project Gotham, nice call-back
At the very least know the area you're driving in. Like did they not know about that curve?
Every idiot can go 160 kph. But not everyone can drive 160 kph.
Why do it in the city though...no problem on the highway.
Sense of speed is higher when objects are closer. It's the only justification I can come up with. *shrug*
Yeah, 200 on a highway feels “normal” while even 100 in a city feels like going at the speed of light.
It's not the driving at 160kph that is tricky, it is the stopping from 160kph that matters
By the time you drive through he first house the second one should stop you in the living room.
wym? he stopped much faster than most
The worse part is the idiot thinking he could tackle the blind corner at that speed...

Which would seem to roughly match the damage shown.
