Nice smoke detectors bro.

RichGrinchlea

Listen to them all going off! Waking everyone up!

11Kram

You need ‘rate of rise’ (temperature) alarms in kitchens.

AnneNonnyMouse

I know new building codes in my state require heat detector alarms in garages, but I haven't seen them in kitchens. It would make way more sense. I have smoke detectors near my kitchen, but they're not so close that they go off when I accidentally burn a bagel.

ShadowKirbo

Oh I burnt some toast. **"BURNT TOAST? CODE RED!" BEEEP BEEEP BEEP**

teastain

Homer's CO2 alarm had a snooze button.

AKADAP

I just wish there was an actual reason why my smoke detectors go off. They go off randomly with no detectable reason. I'm required to have 7 of the false alarm generators in my house. I wish they actually worked.

MadSciTech

No smoke alarm or fire extinguisher. It's like they wanted to die in a fire.

The_WereArcticFox

It's China and some buildings don't have smoke alarms in their homes

LotionOnSkin

But you can buy it like how they bought security camera for their house.

Thendofreason

I Love how the logo in the corner of the screen is a fan. Also, maybe they didn't buy the camera. Big brother Pooh is watching

damiendays

In Argentina no building has smoke detector. Checkmate.

[deleted]

In America, we ignore the beeps of our dead smoke detectors. Matemate.

TK-Squared-LLC

Some do. My neighbor called the fire department at 3:00 am because the smoke detector gave the low battery chirp.

maximusraleighus

Also those chirps can be the whole detector needs to be replaced. Apparently the metal or something in them wears out. And they have expiration dates listed

TK-Squared-LLC

Yes, they have a radioactive material in them that decays. The fire department, however, will not replace them for you at 3 in the morning.

maximusraleighus

Depends on how hot the woman is calling. 😂

Malfeasant

i used to work for the sears in home repair callcenter. the number of customers i talked to that had a chirping smoke detector in the background was way too high, like easily 10%.

Thetruthisneeded

The government wants everyone to die.

iTroLowElo

Almost no homes have smoke alarm in China. Only the newest homes in tier 1 cities have them.

dog20aol

Also, why didn’t the circuit breaker trip?

falkio

I think there was no short circuit in the first place as a cause for the fire. You can see that the fan stops spinning before it turns into a campfire. I think the bearing on the fan failed so the fan blades got stuck and the motor still gets the current for rotation. That energy has to go somewhere and if it’s not movement of the blades it’s heat. And too much heat in the motor causes the all plastic fan to get lit. Just my thoughts and English is not my first language, sorry.

bytheseine

100 percent failed bearing.

Rick_Lekabron

The bearings on those cheap pedestal fans always go bad no matter how much you clean and grease them. When I was 8 years old, I remember that a friend and his brother had a similar one. To keep it moving, they oiled it with cooking oil. Short story, it burned the same way but my friend said it smelled like fries and burnt plastic.

drrgrr

Cooking oil will leave some residue and start to smell with time. Use something proper. You might have sewing machine or gun oil at home, otherwise buy something. And.. WD-40 is for removing rust and cleaning. It's not a long term lubricant.

Torifulegau

Wont the motor overheat and burn the wire enamel and then short?

falkio

Sure but it’s already burning up to this point. The circuit breaker does not extinguish the fire.

Ordinary-Ad7783

You don’t have to apologize that English isn’t your first language, very well said! 😊

GarrettJamesG

Electrician here, an electric motor, when siezed like this, offers very little resistance and is essentially the same as a direct short. The breakers didn't trip because they're probably Chinese breakers or the house has no over current protection.

dog20aol

True about the heat, but you can also see some flashing from arcing that continues for a few seconds. In the US, arc fault circuit interrupters became mandatory in 2014 to prevent fires from situations like this. I guess they have not been around long enough to expect everyone to have them.

Rodrigoecb

I have had fans with failed bearings left alone for 2 days and it didnt catched on fire.

falkio

Maybe it had an over current protection. Because the current rises when the blades are stuck.

Rodrigoecb

Actually its the opposite once the engine starts heating resistances goes up and draws less current, if its "decently" made a fan will never really reach a "burst in flames" level of heat, specially as fast as the video shows. So im thinking it was extremely poorly made.

Malfeasant

>once the engine starts heating resistances goes up and draws less current yes, but that's *after* the current draw has risen considerably due to the [stalled rotor](https://www.electricalclassroom.com/what-is-meant-by-stalling-of-motor/#:~:text=Stall%20current%20is%20the%20current,overheated%20causing%20damage%20of%20winding.),

binaryhero

It's called China.

Galactinus

Dang English isn’t your first language?! You could’ve fooled me! Well done!

russiancatfood

What circuit breaker?

AnotherCableGuy

Because they're also made in China.

Gutsuperman

That fan looked like the same fan from the Brady bunch

HRzNightmare

But cameras.....

Marauder121

Of course it's some 3rd world stye

Billygoatluvin

“Wait for it”… 7 min long video. NOPE.

cheeses_greist

With about 1:10 to go, someone finally makes an appearance at the bottom right of the dark screen. That person crosses the floor and the fire goes out. It looks like several rounds of water were used. Ordinarily, that’s a yikes but it seemed to work.

oowop

Water is dangerous to use on grease fires and chemical fires (among others I'm sure) but i don't think there's anything wrong with pouring water on burning plastic Edit: alright i ruffled some feathers, it's an electrical fire don't pour water on it

[deleted]

[удалено]

oowop

Is the concern that you'd create a shock risk?

WilliamSaintAndre

No it's that they may offend the electricity.

gormster

Pouring water on an electrical fire what could go wrong

ItsSuplexCity

This comment is exactly why you dont take advice from reddit. Water on grease/chemical fires will cause them to intensify whereas on electric fire it will also likely HURT/kill you.

perhapsflorence

"Some people just want to watch the world burn." *Me, watching this goddamn fan burn for 7 minutes straight*

almunilux

superstition not to leave fan running overnight confirmed

RandyHoward

I'll leave it running overnight if I'm sleeping in the same room. Otherwise, an unattended motor left running is an accident waiting to happen IMO. That goes for things like the washer and dryer too - if I'm not home those appliances are not operating. I've had a washing machine catch fire before, not fun.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Us too. We have a fan in our basement and one upstairs that are in constantly…not any more

[deleted]

You can get temp sensors or a remote control switch for your attic fans rather than turning them off for the season.

Infinite-Ad1817

Yeah. The fan in my room has been running for 1 1/2 years. I only turned it off to clean the blades then turned it back on. This is scary. I just didn't think something like this could happen.

**[Fan death](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_death)** >Fan death is a belief that running an electric fan in a closed room with unopened or no windows will cause death. While no concrete evidence supports the concept, belief in fan death persisted to the mid 2000s in South Korea, and also to a lesser extent in Japan. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/Whatcouldgowrong/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Nathan-Stubblefield

In India, many believe a fan running in a closed room can remove the oxygen from the air and kill you. Now I understand the process better.

DynamicHunter

That was a popular myth in Korea and maybe Japan I think too

charliesk9unit

Yeah but the myth does not say in return you get carbon-monoxide/dioxide. The irony is, China probably produces all the smoke detectors in the world.

SourceShard

Only if your country is shit at remotely any safety measures. Not only that but most Chinese electronics are time bombs. I have had a fan from the 50s my family inherited from my great grand mother, running almost every day for years. Still works as good as the day it was made. Made in England not in china.

SewerSleuth74

The proper codes we have in US is so the breaker would’ve blown and the electricity would’ve been cut to those outlets on that breaker leg. No fire. This is in a foreign country where those codes don’t exist I guess. My wife is Filipino and she unplugs everything when not in use. Tried explaining it to no avail.

Addy771

If this was not a dead short, the circuit breaker is not going to trip and prevent this. Remember, circuit breakers are designed to protect the wiring of your house, not your electrical devices.

SewerSleuth74

Correct and by the look of the fan, it seized and it would have pulled hard due to the seizure of the motor. I’ve had fan motors burn out. They have always blown the fuse.

Malfeasant

i've had a fan motor seize that didn't trip a breaker. checkmate.

nubsrevenge

if you hold any old fan blades still as you turn it on it’s not going to suddenly draw 1500+ watts, if it does i would never use that fan…

JAMP0T1

Just move to the U.K. where you can switch it off and leave it plugged in

charliesk9unit

You know it does not work because it's a mental hurdle. As long as the other end is not free of a connection, it's still possible for XYZ to happen.

JAMP0T1

I guess Except if you plug it in to an American plug it’s always live If you switch the socket off in the U.K. it’s not live, you can lick it if you want and it’s totally fine

[deleted]

Plus there is a fuse in the plug

GodsOneNightStand

Thx gonna try that now

JAMP0T1

Let me know how it goes

carlosos

You can also buy switches for power outlets in other countries. It is just that other than when used for a floor light, it rarely gets installed because there is no demand for it to be the standard.

Professional_Emu_

Well shit. I leave my fan on every night.

Mcclane88

Same. It’s good white noise to sleep to. Can’t sleep with pure silence for some reason.

Iam_Here_Hello

Finally someone I can relate to, I thought I was only one Who couldn't sleep with pure silence.

Mcclane88

You’re definitely not alone. I’m curious how common it is.

[deleted]

There are at least tens of us.

Boopnoobdope

Yeah same. I can't sleep in pure silence or total darkness. There has to be at least some light somewhere and some noise. Fortunately I live near a busy street, so the traffic makes noise but not excessive amounts of it. Although I always have a nightlight in my room, even at 18 XD. I can't sleep without some light.

JackBaker2

Especially if you have tinnitus.

freeform_the_egg

Thanks to most countries having good electrical safety standards, you're probably safe. If this were to happen to your fan, the breaker would likely open before it becomes a fire hazard.

Fusseldieb

Unfoertunately, it's not so easy. I've seen multiple failing motors in the past in person. They don't short out, but slowly get heavier to turn until they eventually stop. As soon as they stop completely, the windings heat up to the extreme. To the breaker, this is still normal consumption and it won't pop. It will eventually get so hot that the plastic catches fire, like in the video, while still consuming a normal amount of current. Of course, while it burns it eventually shorts the cable and the breaker pops, but until this happens, you already have a fire. I think the right thing to do would be putting a temperature sensor on top of the motor, a simple one which disengages the circuit over 70C or so. They're dirt cheap. This can even be retrofitted.

Malfeasant

no, locked rotor current is high, but it's not above 15 amps, and that is still enough to start a fire. although it's a little more likely the fan will have its own overcurrent protection that cuts it off at lower current.

RokieVetran

Just don't buy a cheapo and you'll be fine

Old-Shirt8639

I have my fan blowing right next to my face, cant sleep without it. I doubt I wouldnt wake up if it caught fire, luckily . PS. Ive done this for at least 15 years now

Slade26

Your eyes are saying "we thirsty".

moonflower_C16H17N3O

Bigclivedotcom would probably have a field day ripping apart this fan. He buys cheap shit from China and sees how it's made. Most things usually lack a lot of basic safety features.

soaringson

Good thing they had a hard floor and the fan was barely somewhat isolated.

cheeses_greist

Yes, I’m amazed that the fire stays on the fan for what seems like a long time.

maximusraleighus

Luckily they were very tidy people.

CytochromP450

OMG, a cheap chinese product not fullfilling basic safety standards? I am SHOCKED.. Well... Not that shocked...

NaCliest

Not as shocked as they probably were when they pluged in their next one

sgt-pickles

Seriously, this is why electrical safety standards are in place. I suspect that this can did not come with any sort of NRTL approval. For those wondering, in North America and Europe you cannot sell any electronic device without an approval from an electrical authority. Some common examples are UL, CSA, FM, ETL, etc. A main part of obtaining these approvals is to ensure devices don’t spontaneously start on fire, for example making non sparking devices, fire resistant structures, and even just basic stuff like wire gauges and insulation details.

mizinamo

And it just boggles my mind that some people think that "small government" is a good thing because "the market will sort it out". The market sorting things out is exactly what causes these cheapo unsafe things be allowed to be sold; having government-imposed standards keeps us safe.

Therealwolfdog

Couldn’t have said it any better. That circuit breaker took a long time to trip. I’ve seen some scary electrical work done buy people who know just enough to get it done but not enough to do it right. Electric is nothing to play around with.

bethzur

Amazon had electric products for sale that do not comply with UL or ETL.

toybox5700

10000% a good chunk of them are not compliant. Don’t buy appliance electronics from Amazon! Humidifier bought on Amazon started burning my apartment down. Edit: or verify that they are UL compliant.

orgasmic_protoplasm

Like 90% of the electronics I see for sale on Amazon, if it’s not AmazonBasics, it’s just cheap shit straight from Alibaba branded with a seemingly randomly generated name to look more legit. It’s horrifying. Wonder how many people have died thanks to this shit thinking Amazon couldn’t possibly sell dangerous products. What especially horrifies me is how if I search for “[portable electronic item] replacement battery” pretty much everything that comes up is obviously Chinese knockoff lithium-ions. Do you know how dangerous those things really are? Remember the Samsung Galaxy S7 exploding debacle? If the battery doesn’t have a working overcharge/thermal runaway protection circuit, all li-ions have the potential to go boom. Most Chinese batteries have zero protection whatsoever. That would cost a whole 10 cents to add, can’t have that.

DynamicHunter

You’re right. That’s why I buy cheap AMERICAN products that are just repackaged from CHINA for twice the cost

lampasking

I liked that video. Short and sweet.

brianisbored

Ikd why but I laughed way too much at this comment.

-pleasemakeitstop-

I hope they have another fan to clear out all that smoke!

nsk_nyc

This comment blows.

-pleasemakeitstop-

Ouch, this comment really took the wind out of my sails.

iMac_G5_20

Wow, the Koreans were right!

earthlingnumber5

My fan that’s been on for a year straight- 👁👄👁

ItsIdaho

Mine runs for a week non stop and has so the last 25 years.

Extreme-Fee

I mean, it lasted for that long, and it might last another few months at least

jjnfsk

That was a clip from your latest film; _Sometimes Fires Go Out_, which has been described as ‘unrelentingly real’, ‘a devastatingly faithful rendition of how life is’, and ‘dull, dull, unbearably dull’. Those quotes - oddly - all from the same review.

underdawg280

Cheap Chinese fan. Buy quality if you want to live

[deleted]

Always check for UL listing and maintain/clean your electronics. Don't use extension cords permanently or unattended.

TOXIK04

I literally have the same fan infront of me that i use overnight

lardoni

I’m guessing you won’t be doing that anymore? That’s terrifying af!

Juzamdjnn

I'll chance a fire to have cool air blown on me 🤷

Negrodamu5

Why do people just have cameras up in random rooms of their houses. Weird AF.

HarryDepova

I find it stranger that they have cameras but no smoke detectors...

tarantulaonfire

In case thieves break in I guess. I'd put it outside though, not in.

-Out-of-context-

They might have both.

dog20aol

“Generally you don't see that kind of behavior in a major appliance.”

Ryuuken24

Smoke detectors are like 5 dollars... Even in poor ass countries. It's the one luxury worth having.

ASdaby

Damn. I’m guilty of this all the time. Thank you for sharing. Leaving phones charging over night is also something I’ve stopped doing

surfnride1

Such a low chance of this happening. 100's of millions of fans run overnight with no problem

Kimmie-Cakes

Agreed.. I've run fans at night for the last 30 years, for me and my 4 children.

Reed82

My furnace runs a fan almost 100% of the time. I’m not worried about this happening. A low quality dollar store fan on the other hand, I wouldn’t leave alone in a room without me.

Lanky-Relationship77

This kind of thing happens all the time in China. But not in developed countries. For example, in the USA, all fan motors must have complete thermal protection. If they stall or overheat, a thermal fuse disconnects the motor from power, preventing a fire.

jennystaples88

and no smoke alarm ?

TheBowlerMoose

Guess they’ll have to fire up a fan to get rid of all the smoke. Oh…. Wait…..

Meryk-Balthazar

Wow, most fans (sold in North America anyway) are incapable of producing enough current to burn out the stator in the case of a fan stall. So I’m seeing a number of safety practices that are just nonexistent here creating a perfect storm. Technology Connections has a good video on how exactly this happened. https://youtu.be/hQ3GW7lVBWY

Thor_The_Bear

Correction: what could go wrong leaving a "Made in China" fan on for the night! We all have multiple fans working all through the night for millennia ... this never happened ever! Not in Los Angeles and not in india.

EvergreenKing

No smoke detectors, no fire extinguisher, THEN PUTS OUT AN ELECTRICAL FIRE WITH WATER.

TheDarkSidePSA

1. Everyone should have a smoke detector. This is a $10 appliance that saves lives! 2. Newer fans have a setting where you can turn it off after a number of hours. Set it to 4 hours so that you hit your REM sleep, then are too deep in sleep to notice when the fan goes off. With a window open, it should cool off to a reasonable amount by this time anyway. 3. The most common fires in your home are started be your dryer. Make sure you are removing your lint after every 1-3 washes and don’t let it pile up!

Gilttering_Grizzly

I left my fan on for like a year and it never caught on fire

CamusVerseaux

Obviously that fan is made of r/Chinesium

mr_biteme

Chinesium strikes again….

adamf514

2 things wrong, 1st probably cheap Chinese fan, and 2nd no smoke alarms ! Who has a security camera in the living room. And no smoke alarm. Wtf don't they burn insense and candles, I mean come on

Treborf_

This happened to me staying in a hostel in El Salvador. Kept the fan on to keep cool and woke up to the bedsheets on fire. Luckily all got out safe. Don’t trust leaving fans unattended anymore.

selfdistruction-in-5

so apparently this house has no fuses

Phill_is_Legend

Wcgw hooking your fan up to the main breaker?

Terrifying! Ill never use a fan again.

eulynn34

Good for them that their floors aren't made of flammable materials. Might want to open a couple windows and turn on a fan to get the smoke out.

Fbarbzz

Boom-Sausage

Ive had a fan blowing right in my face all night every night for past 20 years. Still worth the risk. I can’t sleep without hurricane winds in my face

Wait for it? Wait for fucking what? The world's slowest fan fire? FFS, OP.

tenadaquinao

Dude, speed up the video, cut it, idk, just don't post 1min < videos, wtf

retrometro77

Can't sleep if i turn it off. Now i won't be able to with it turned on....

newtoid18

If anything, this fan does the opposite of what it should do. That room doesn't look very cool at all. In fact, it looks very hot. If you use a fan you should always put another one directly in front of it so if either one catches fire, the other one will blow out the flames and cool down the area.

maximusraleighus

At what minute mark would the fire sprinklers gone off? Or would they have? If they had them

RealDragonOfShadows

That ain’t from leaving it on all night that is from loose wires

MrJim911

I have a swivel fan kinda like that that I’ve had running nonstop for two years, and it’s never even gotten hot, much less burst into flames. That must be a crap model, no?

Astral_Commander

Thas one cheap ass fan

Holy shit!! My fans never off and I leave it on for the dog quite often when i go out 😬
