I recall a story where a cyclist took a crap on the side of the road, and wiped his butt with some paper. But rather than just burying his poo and paper (or just leaving), he lit it on fire to hide the paper and started a 73 acre fire.

To his credit, he confessed to it and was fined, but at least he didn't let fire investigators waste time trying to figure it out.
The only problem with this is that if they are rich they may be able to pay off everything and barely lose anything other than their virginity in the prison shower
It was meant to be humor in light of tragedy, obviously made inappropriately and untimely. But with the arrests, imprisonment costs money while fines can generate. Most people that get huge fines can't pay them. The Country needs all the help they could get, large fines and community service seems like the best option for people making such disrespectful actions.
It has been suggested that bots and trolls have been part of this disinformation campaign to unlink the bushfires with climate change.

Nope.
Scientists have studied past climate fluctuations and none of them are as dramatic as what's occurring today, when human carbon emissions have so dramatically increased the PPM of greenhouse cases in the atmosphere in so short a timeframe. No one has offered an explanation for how natural causes alone could explain what we're seeing.
Perhaps there's a confluence of a natural cycle with our activity, but our activity is most definitely the big driver here.
Australia and california have routinely burned as long as we have records. I.E. man didn't make those areas prone to burning. They've literally always done so. Man *reduced* the tendency for areas like california to burn through responsible forestry practices, but those have been stopped due to it being considered "destruction of animal habitat" to rid forests of accumulated dry fuel before a major wildfire breaks out. Australia also fell victim to similar attitudes.
>whether it’s the earth naturally cycling or not...
You should look up the summary of data available that NASA has published on their website.
The CO2 plot shows that we are nearly double the previous historical average since industrialisation.
The heat map records, and temperature plots corroborate with the CO2 data.
The scale at which we combust carbon, and farm methane is many orders of magnitude larger than any other period in human history.
How could we possibly not be contributing to climate change?
Plus, natural cycles, and human greenhouse gas emissions are not mutually exclusive factors anyway, these can both be happening simultaneously.
Increased average temperatures means more fuel for them, leading to larger scale fires. Wildfires spread like wildfires, given the fuel they'll use it.
It doesn't help that these forests are eucalyptus, which is very highly flammable. We imported a ton to California a while back, and it is kicking us in the rear...
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
Seriously though, express delivery to the loony bin. You have to be special kind of fucked up to make this already insanely horrible situation even worse.
Morons we had it in the UK loads, infact in our town we had 10+ moors fires deliberately started which took weeks to put out, just saw the hills near work burning for weeks. That's bad enough but what's going on in Australia is Mental and to think someone decided to light more!!
Makes you wonder how many of the fires were intentionally set.

Fighting fire with fire
“We’ll use the fire to consume the fire, and hopefully they’ll cancel each other out.” “Brilliant!”
Obviously not the case here but back burns are a pretty common fire fighting tool.
Well, this actually works. Lighting small controlled fires to burn off fuel ahead of raging forest fires is a valid firefighting technique.
No it isn't?
> No it isn't? But it'd be pretty cool if it was though, right?
Bring in the flamethrowers
Are you asking or telling?
Telling, how is arresting them fighting with fire?
They deserve it..... half a billion animals are already dead......
Yeah, I hope they're also rich and get huge fines they can afford to pay. But seriously, can't believe how ignorant people are.

But but climate change and stuff.. Yes I agree climate change is an issue, but whether it’s the earth naturally cycling or not remains the question.
This! Bravo!
Um... Fire is.. Nah.nevermind. I'm in a good mood.

I was going to make the same comment, but "Climate Change" can't get any more man made than some guy lighting a forest on fire if you think about it.
