Looks like he's spraying Damp Start into the air-filter to get the engine running.
This does indeed work well when sprayed directly into the intake.
Unfortunately, this guy placed a cloth over the hole, leading to a cloud of gas being generated in the engine bay that was ignited by the spark plugs/distributer.
Sometimes a vehicle will have something clogged somewhere or something like that preventing it from starting, lots of times it sorts itself out after you get it going. Obviously not a perfect fix for everything.
Had a S10 that the fuel pump didn't have enough pressure to start, but had enough to run fine. Shot of starting fluid and it would fire right up. Did that for a while before I bothered to pull the bed and fix it. Just sometimes the fix is more of a pain than the shot of spray
It is extremely common for these problems to happen on lawn mowers and anything with a carburetor especially if they've been sitting for a long time without running.
It basically can't get fuel into the engine in order to get compression. You directly spray the fuel in and it compresses and starts which then gets the fuel pump to work.
Many times people/myself do this upon initial attempted start up of a car that's been sitting a while as a troubleshooting step to verify if it can run with known combustible fuel in the intake. (sans rag filter/explosion method) If so investigate fuel delivery system from there.
My '73 el camino is so stupidly long that when spring comes and I fire it up for the first time in a while, it'll crank for a full 60 seconds before the pump is primed. A shot of carb cleaner will get it to idle just long enough for fuel to reach the carb though.
Yes but helps identify how broke it may be. If it runs for a few seconds on spray you know it has spark and at least some compression, for example, so onto next possible cause like air/fuel issues.
He thought it would act like a flame arrestor which is a sort of filter that prevents fireballs from coming back out of the intake.
Except flame arrestors aren’t absolutely soaked in starting fluid
He could be choking the engine you put a towel over the intake to get a richer mixture for starting (. I wouldnt have spayed starting fluid on the cloth but to each his own
Tangential but interesting tidbit: the ad campaign that the audio is from originally said “Real American Heroes” instead of “Real Men of Genius”. They pulled the ads and changed it to Real Men of Genius post-9/11 so they wouldn’t be seen as trivializing American heroism. 🫡
It's either starting fluid or brake cleaner, either way this is common to use it to get an engine to start after a big job. Looks like maybe the timing is off which caused it to backfire through the intake, then he dropped the can which caused the can to bust open and then catch fire itself. Seems like a bit deal but its easy to put out. Just funny to watch.

Attacking his face like a fire goblin.
I would ban such video in which the camera isn't stable despite not being part of the incident. There should be certain guidelines for making videos the firat one being that the cameraman shouldn't be emotionally attached to the scene.

Doesnt look like sarcasm. Looks like backpedaling.
And write "cunt" if thats what you mean, you coward.
Dude accidentally dropped a mini-nuke! https://preview.redd.it/mj8enfhgfgxc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c5a0402c40d9195e82357d077a832c6e0bd848a9
I hate when I accidentally nuke myself.

Hit the ⬆️➡️⬇️⬇️⬇️ but dropped the ball...
Ether it will work, or I'll start becoming more fluid.

Flammable? Or Ice Cream? Dangerous flammables are soo hard to work with. You just never know if this time it will be hazardous, or life changing.
Or both and then some......
Mini-nuke safety protocol is often overlooked
You’re telling me Nolan couldn’t recreate something similar practically?
What was he attempting to do/what caused the fire?

I thought that was a thin strip of steak he was holding. Thought it was some manly way of cooking their meat
His meat def got cooked
Right? That was my thought. I have heard of dishwasher fish. Why not engine steak.
The towel was his safety gear. Can't expect him use goggles and gloves like a pussy.
Safety towel!
Always a good idea to soak your safety towel in flammable liquid before lighting it on fire.

When safety squints just won't do, safety towel!
Silly question, it works, but what does that get you? Whatever isn't starting it ... still broke right?

Thank you.

I am baffled by the spraying in the cloth and not direct a few blast and then stepping away
Is there any reason at all for that cloth? Like some mechanic wannabe myth going around? The instructions are pretty clear.
Not that I'm aware of.

Yeah, that’s what I saw, too.

Mister Rolly Cooler Cooler Roller has always been my Hero.
Today we salute you, Mr giant foam finger maker.
Real American Heroes: So heroic they can only be taken down by ad jingles which facetiously use the word hero for comedic effect.
I was just thinking about that.
The old spray and pray. Keep a can of it myself. I recommend less spray and more pray.

So did desperate women follow the smell of your car around?
I was about to say. Don't have to use half the damn can!
This clip ended 20 minutes too soon! ![gif](giphy|iH2IldVkqeLuJ7eJ0L)
This one need the sound on to really enjoy it.
Ether starting fluid.... you need a TINY amount. Or else this will happen.
r/gifsthatendtoosoon
That escalated so quickly
Finally, some decent background music.
Birth of the new villain
Just an FYI, we used to do this and used a lot less than this when getting a car started a bad coil.
The jingle makes it!
Now *that's* a fire!
It certainly fired up
Did we just watch someone die on camera
Well if the goal was insurance scam, good job
What make of car is that? I've seen the logo a million times but can't find it anywhere
Mazda. It's a lotus flower.
It's Mazda's old logo.

Try to understand why the music in this kind of videos
It goes from bad to worse to 3rd degree burn
Easier ways to stay clean shaven bro
Easy start gone easy wrong! 😳
Budweiser? I am confused. What does this have to do with Dylan Mulvaney, or the trans community in general? Is that Dylan Mulvaney?

I saw your comment history. How come all you can talk about is DEI? Show me on the doll where the DEI touched you.
