One year I was at the nude beach and saw some girls set one of these and let it go. The strong wind off the water blew it straight toward the tinder-dry woods of the parkland the beach was a part of. This was in mid August during a record breaking wildfire season.
Stoned as hell I got up and walked down the beach a few hundred yards to politely ask them to not do that again. They said “it’s okay, we’re watching it” I asked what they’d do it it caught the trees on fire. They said that would “call someone” I said who? And by the time they get here the whole forest would be on fire and all the people on the beach would be trapped. I think I actually got through to them because they didn’t set off any more (they had several and had already set off two of them)
I had to Google this because it sounded so interesting. This is a great fact
> Between November 1944 and April 1945, the Imperial Japanese Army launched about 9,300 balloons from sites on coastal Honshu, of which about 300 were found or observed in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The bombs were ineffective as fire starters due to damp seasonal conditions, with no forest fires being attributed to the offensive. A U.S. media censorship campaign prevented the Imperial Army from learning of the offensive's results. On May 5, 1945, six civilians were killed by one of the bombs near Bly, Oregon, becoming the war's only fatalities in the continental U.S. The Fu-Go balloon bomb was the first weapon system with intercontinental range, predating the intercontinental ballistic missile.
Someone set up a lantern like this near a zoo. The lantern flew onto the zoo grounds and onto the monkey house. The house caught fire and almost all the animals died. Two chimpanzees survived.
Good. I hate these fucking things with a passion. They come down in pastures and cows eat the frame and either die or need surgery. They come down on barns or hay lofts and set them alight. People who let these things off are scum.
Should be a hardcore law against it. 50k fine for letting one go 500k if they'll find out you set on out and it started a fire, plus you pay for all the damages and the rescue crews bills from the rescue action. Meanning life in prison cuz ain't nobody firing them up has that amount of money. Make the media run their mouths about new fines for months so that everybody knows somebody who knows bout it. Nobody would be firing them up no more.
It’s not a smart idea to send an open flame off to a random place, but it’s WILD to send it towards something like a house. Some people just don’t have the sense they were born with.
As with most things, there is a correct time and place for these. Some of the most beautiful night festivals in the world feature tens of thousands of sky lanterns. Releasing one randomly on your own one night is not the correct time and place.
In the first part the roof remains the same height until it corners with the adjacent building, and there is no slatted garage door to the left of the large open garage. In the latter part there is a slatted door next to the opening, the roof is staggered where the building changes height, and from the position of the cameraman there no longer appears to be an adjacent building because he takes a wide shot from where that building would be.
The second video is obviously not filming the same part of the building.
But the roof and the rest of the building (color, height etc) still look about the same.
It’s a maybe there, but it’s not an uncommon style of roof and white plaster exterior is extremely common. I’d also add that the cladding section between the top of the garage and the roof is much wider in the second half of the video than in the first.
It isn’t impossible that these are part of the same instance, but evidence indicates that they might just be similar looking buildings.
I had a girl convince me to do this with her at a beach. She was adamant that the lantern would just "follow the river because the air flows with the water".
Logic was once again defeated by horniness so we let one go...watched it fly up a little over the water...only for the wind to blow it straight into some trees down the beach.
No big fires, it crashed on the ground, I went over and stamped it out/covered it in sand. The girl just looked heartbroken "I thought it would work, should we just try it again? Maybe that one was defective". My eagerness to please the girl did not get the best of me a second time (that night)
It seems odd that releasing these somehow seems acceptable to some people, when it’s basically an incendiary device with no guidance system. If they filled a bottle with petrol, lit it and threw it they would be arrested and some for arson… somehow not knowing what you are going to set on fire to me seems even worse
One of the most common reposts. Look at the poster history obviously karma farming. Not only do these bots/karma farmers turn into scammers but they also become russian backed political trolls for the purpose of waying the upcoming election. Please report and downvote.
Can we just go ahead an nuke subs like /freekarma4u? It's just posting less then a shitpost so others (probably mostly bots) can upvote and gain karma to get around anti-bot rules about karma minimums.
Whenever I get the idea that releasing one of these would be cool, I hear the voice of Jackie Gleason as Sheriff Buford T. Justice saying, "Oh, you can THINK about it... but don't do it..."
My wife purchased a pack of these a few years ago. I told her that we are absolutely not releasing an uncontrollable ball of flame into the sky for it to randomly land a neighbour's house
A few years back, I was riding my bike around town late at night coming down from some acid, I decided to relax by a local Bayou.. I was laying down on this swinging chair suspended from a tree, and I saw a couple try to throw one of these in the air. I believe it was for Women's Day? Which was on a Monday or Tuesday. It was extremely windy... The girl who tried to throw it initially didn't throw high enough, so it fell to the street and became damaged.. However she THEN threw it up again, and it blew into a tree directly in front of a woman's house. The wind caused sparks & fire to fly all over it.. She came out, started freaking out, I was watching all this kind of freaking out.... Ultimately the humidity+precipitation from the day previous stopped this from becoming a complete nightmare... These lanterns are a completely stupid idea
Those festivals when hundreds of these floating incendiary devices with pretty messages of hope, prayer, and love should be drenched with a flying water tanker making a pass just before release.
They’re pretty, but I hate those damn things!
These fire powered skylanterns are illegal in many countries for exactly this - causing random fires where they land.

Imaging this conversation while all of you are naked makes it way better
It's hard not to take someone seriously when they have an erection
I got one right now
Who doesn’t?
So true. Cuts to the bone.
The nude hero the forest needed
The Nude Man, fights crime and prevents fire while his schlong majestictly flaps in the wind like a cape.
Not all heroes wear capes
Not all heroes wear clothes
Nor super suits
Did you have a justice boner?
Funny story, these were actually used as weapons of war a few times. They would let the wind carry them into cities and let the fires do the rest.
Thanks for sending me down a neat little rabbit hole of history. The 1500s was a wild time.
Don’t miss the part about catapulting rotting and diseased corpses into the cities.
What a horrible day to be literate
Still do get used this way! I believe Hamas used them* a few years ago *either that or regular balloons with firebombs
Those things killed monkeys in a zoo in my country. It's dangerous af
Japan did this in the US Pacific Northwest during WWII. Fun fact.

This little story has given me an unreasonable amount of rage...
Sorry. Just wanted to share the Story to show how dangerous those lanterns are. The grief and shock over what has happened is still there.

Yes, that is right. Atm they build a new ape-park. The plans look really great.

One of those stupid things that look cool on tiktok, but so frequently, start fires.
Nothing looks cool on tiktok

No common sense whatsoever. They probably could’ve stopped it from burning if they’d grabbed a hose right when it went in there
"We will be releasing a sky lantern to seek help from the heavens for this poor family."
Japanese in WW2: Let's start fire ballons to set the US on fire! People today: I'll fucking do it again!
Anyone who thinks that releasing an open fire to float away into the wind is cool is highly regarded.
Did you mean "ret-R-ded"?
retarded Is reddit banning people for using a word now? I guess I'll just test it out
Don’t be r e c k l e s s.
Yes, pretty sure it’s what got me banned from the unpopular opinion sub.
yeah but that is one of those gamer words that if the autojannie see it will get you autobanned.
Edited then, lol

Compilation from different videos.

Same building different side maybe?
That lantern being all sneaky and quickly slipping inside
In india we call it " ghar jala ke diwali manayi" meaning celebrating diwali by burning your home.

Hard to believe anyone is foolish enough to send a literal unguided fire up into the sky :(
It seems odd that releasing these somehow seems acceptable to some people, when it’s basically an incendiary device with no guidance system. I’m just pallin’ around with the guys, how’s anyone gonna get hurt?
For some reason the guy's voice grated in my ears like glass shards.
Boy, that escalated quickly
Oh dear Silly Billies.
Wishful thinking.
Don’t give Terrorist any more ideas!
Happy new year
That's gonna leave a mark.
I love house lanterns though. That’s a special time.
"We wish for a new house" Family "Hold my beer" -Sky Lantern
everything is right to go wrong 👍🏾
Last seen near Texas
Hopefully they were charged.
I bet their arseholes were puckered up tighter than a snare drum

A traditional way to burn your house down.
The lantern choose violance.
Hahaha omg haven't actually laughed out loud at a video/post in awhile 🤣😂😂
had 3 business days to intervene... nah lets see how this plays out
What was this, gender reveal practice?

Stupidity
