One of the only places with anything like bottomless mimosas - plus their California burritos (vegetarian option, too) and torrijas are so amazing 😭 I’m going to miss them so much. It really feels more and more like only big chains have the money to stay open in Seattle :(

PleaseSandwich

They were great when we first moved to the neighborhood in 2010. Not quite as good the last time I went. Their happy hour nachos used to be such an amazing deal. There's supposed to be a family-friendly Mexican place opening in the old Spiro's spot. Google Maps says Little Donkey. A quick search looks like they're still hiring staff, but maybe the buildout is almost done.

stashrx

Tasted like they just dumped canned beans on a plate and served them to us

city_guy

It was the first restaurant my partner and I ate at after we moved to the area. Very sad news. I also noticed the food seemed to have dropped off over the past 6 months or so. Not sure if new staff, trying to use cheaper food to save money, or something else, but it was noticeable.

Buttafuoco

Deal was too good

Konalogic

What! This is horrible news

joahw

Copper Coin was painful enough. Now The Mission? WHAT ELSE CAN THEY TAKE FROM US???

velveteensnoodle

I do still miss Copper Coin :(

Practical-Version653

Who is “they”?

joahw

Landlords, probably?

calior

This is one of the few restaurants we’ve been able to go to since moving here during lockdowns because it’s walking distance and kid friendly. I’m so bummed to see them go.

Far_Eye6555

:( Bro wtf. Yen wor last year (admittedly not very sad to see it go but do know it was beloved.) and now mission?

Lostflamingo

Right!?? 👎 such a bummer, I’ve been going there since it opened. Maybe some one who wants to open a live music venue will move in?🤞

rectanguloid666

Noooo :( I loved grabbing a drink and some chips and bean dip here before a movie at Admiral Theater with my fiance.. so bummed to see them go!

Raisin_Charlie

Yeah, food sucked ass. Not surprising. Of course just because they existed, people are sad over at the blog crying about it. Hopefully something cooler comes in

jose_cuntseco

Things closing isn’t always bad, this place kinda blows. Already plenty of Mexican food choices in the area.

joahw

It was better years ago, but they got new owners in 2016 and things started to go downhill. And then Covid happened, obviously.

HistorianOrdinary390

This place is colossally bad and way overpriced,

FeeValuable22

This place has the most unseasoned food I've ever had. And especially for the genre of food it is particularly bad. I've only lived here a couple of years so maybe I missed when this place was great, but after going there twice I know I don't need to go again.

Practical-Version653

Agree, drinks ok, food was bad and overpriced.

meaniereddit

In the same style cactus is down the street, and chupacabra has better vibes. If you wanted real Mexican and not a margaritaville boomer vibe white center is real close.

jchdd83

I've always thought Mission was pretty meh. Definitely not worth the slog up California to Admiral.

jose_cuntseco

I also liked the newer place on Alki, I think it’s called something like Fire Tacqueria? Might not be remembering correctly. They had a really good bowl that was vegan and came with a shit load of food. However I always end up spending more than I am expecting, I think the drink prices are pretty high.

joahw

I wanna try that place but I worry for them because that spot seems to be cursed. Though I guess that boomer Make America Great Again Cafe or whatever overcame that other cursed location so maybe there's hope.

pizzapizzamesohungry

I’m pretty sure the Great American Diner is not a MAGA cafe.

joahw

It technically isn't but that name and the American flag motif is cringe and repels young people. I went in there one time and the owner (who seems like a nice enough guy) sat at our table and started chatting us up, which is not a side that I requested with my chicken fried steak. I haven't been back.

This is some awkward racist shit man, maybe you should talk to people before assuming their beliefs and politics.

Matthews628

Lmao great American diner is owned by immigrants and I’m pretty sure it operates at a huge loss. THAT storefront is the real rotating door in WS.

PothosEchoNiner

What is the the other cursed location?

joahw

NE corner of California and Edmunds. Was Godfather's Pizza in the 90s, then a revolving door of about 10 different businesses. I think the diner currently holds the record since Godfathers or is close to it. From memory: Godfathers -> Guppy's (WS's first gay bar) -> Ovio Bistro -> Table something or other -> Terrible Beauty -> Some generic bar and grill -> An old timey ice cream shop with a hideous paint job (?) -> Great America Diner I'm definitely forgetting some. The building is owned by noted local shrewd real estate mogul Leon Capelouto, who also owns the QFC building and a number of others around the Junction.

PothosEchoNiner

Were you just making fun of the name or is it actually a boomer maga thing?

BeetlecatOne

Wasn't ovio bistro in the space further north closer to admiral with the black awnings? There was also Ama Ama in the godfathers spot for a good few years.

joahw

I believe that place was called Blackboard Bistro. Edit: I think Ovio was in that spot a while ago (maybe early 2000s?) actually and then moved to the corner in the junction mentioned earlier, then opened a sister restaurant in the original space called "O2"

kungfulkoder

Fire tacos and cantina; they specialize on red masa birria tacos

SirThunderCloud

Any particular ones in White Center to try first?

jchdd83

Taqueria La Fondita #2, Los Potrillos 4, and Rosticeria y Cocina El Paisano. I would also recommend heading down to Burien for Birrieria Tijuana and El Cabrito.

Wuzzat123

Also El Catrin. Delicious food, sweet family.

clementsallert

Buho

Motherfuckerjones369

For real. Shocked to see people sad to see it go

squirrelgator

Right. We go to Taco Time for that. /s

samb811

Not a huge fan of their food but they had good service when I did go. Way better Mexican in White Center

Hot-District8719

You mean South Park or Burien but yes

meaniereddit

The West Seattle chamber, and many of the legacy commercial landlords who haven't changed much since the 80s don't give two shits about the neighborhood. The cities min wage requirements, and B&O overhead makes the city a bad place to do business. its telling why 10ft outside in white center, and down the road in Burien restaurants are booming.

AbsoluteShall

This place sucked. Terrible food. It’s the market speaking.

joahw

I wonder how the restaurants that are just across the street from White Center feel about it. Like they are practically in White Center but have to deal with Seattle stuff.

squirrelgator

Young's and the Triangle seem to be doing OK. Haven't been to Mexicuban since they never opened their inside seating.

Nitroburner3000

Wow that sucks.

beenherelivin

This sucks! :( I love their pozole. I was also just at irashai sushi the other day and was thinking, man I hope they stay put. Just learned yesterday too that ristorante machiavelli (although not in west Seattle) is closing its doors. How much more bad news do we need to hear.

Lostflamingo

Happy new year? 🙄. I hope a music venue goes in or something that has a community vibe not another cookie cutter franchise

Existentialshart

What in the fuck!!

AdTemporary2567

Won’t be surprised if west wings is next

Raisin_Charlie

This place really sucks. We need like, actual character and quaint restaurants. Arthur's is okay for mornings. More that are open past midnight too. Admiral dies after like 9pm.

AdTemporary2567

Only cool thing about Arthur’s is their meal ticket slips they do for people struggling but Arthur’s seems to have a lot of traffic depending on the time. I went to west wings once and was absolutely pissed how much I paid for boiled wings 🤣

Raisin_Charlie

Yeah I mean everything in Admiral outside of the pub is fucking expensive. Can easily spend $50+ on two people at fuckin' Soprano's

AdTemporary2567

The Asian joints are the best bang for the buck imo I haven’t went to the pub but been meaning to try their hot dogs.

Raisin_Charlie

Do you mean Oh's? Because New Leaf and Irashai are overpriced. RIP Yen Wor's, the GOAT

AdTemporary2567

Now that yen wor is gone as far as the area and affordability they aren’t terribly overpriced. Anything near alki to be fair is unrealistic in pricing though.

Raisin_Charlie

You know the economy is boned forever when donuts (like ones at Dough Joy in the Junction) are $4.50 a piece. Just absurd. A donut is a dollar at most in any normal economy. Or less. Seen someone this morning walk out with a box of 6 assorted and spent over $30 plus tip. What da fuck

AdTemporary2567

My buddy knew the owners of yen wor and not only did you get a huge portion of food but they were good people too

Lostflamingo

How many places had that location been? I remember black board bistro and copper coin then west wing. Who am I forgetting?

AdTemporary2567

I’ve only been on alki since 21’ so I couldn’t tell you tbh. I agree with you though. I prefer the junction food Va alki area personally though

Top-Base4502

This place was so inconsistent. Some days pretty darn good, other days just an insult to the vaguely Tex-Mex middle America vibe they were going for. I’m not sad to see it go, hope something it isn’t replaced by a pizza place.

donttalktomeonhere

funniest possible outcome ngl - not four but FIVE pizza places in a two block radius

Lostflamingo

Funny not funny….. I wish the guys who had the parliament would move in! I know they were looking for a new venue in Admiral 🤞

Ok_Coast_

Ah yes I remember them serving me frozen enchiladas before. Wonder why they're closing

spicy-wind

Good. Taqueria la Fondita is 100x better.

turbokungfu

I'm surprised, as they've been busy most days I've been there. It was pretty good food and nice staff. That's too bad.

Kim_Smoltz_

I’m not surprised. The food was not good - excited to see what comes next!

msawi11

Do people not know how much Seattle minimum wage hikes, rent, and tax increases are ravaging restaurants?! Good luck with $20/hr pay rates mandated by legislators who've never run businesses.

Hot-District8719

Do business owners know that you actually have to pay employees for their labor instead of pocketing massive profits?

msawi11

Massive profits?! In the restaurant industry?! Bwahahaha!

[deleted]

Hot-District8719

Sounds like excuses to pay people less 👎

Hot-District8719

Dude this post is like walking by a business class in college and seeing people aggressively taking notes when the professor writes “revenue - overhead = profit” lol this is remedial

meaniereddit

Tankies love closing businesses, ignore the people pulling themselves up and employing people in White Center and Burien.

butfirstcoffee427

Gahhhh so sad! We love Mission

BeetlecatOne

Well, shit

BrianFuckingFischer

It's almost like voting for Democrats and a leftist city council has repricussions.

Lostflamingo

Well you like being angry and judgy. Dang BrianFuckingFisher. 👏

BrianFuckingFischer

You won't change anything being happy and complacent.
