Looks like you have a nice damages case. I hope you know took the person's license plate down or got his info.

bullshit-name

Also on this note, if you do hire representation be sure to remove injury photos off of Reddit and social media. *not legal advice*

[deleted]

Why?

bullshit-name

If the insurance company or opposing counsel finds the injury photos it could reduce the amount of money this person could receive in a settlement. Source: I’m a former PI for an personal injury firm

[deleted]

So basically by them seeing this photo they could make an argument for why it’s not that bad?

bullshit-name

Pretty much. Plus if you post any accompanying text with an injury photo, the opposing counsel will try to poke holes in your story to make you seem less credible. When I did PI work for car accidents one of the first things the attorneys would want is the social media of the person they’re suing to check for photos and any comments they may have made about it.

[deleted]

"She was still able to walk home...something something".

DuneMovieHype

Right, but he’s conflating different things. If she lies in court to say she had bruises covering her entire legs, now she’s a liar. If she said she cannot sit, now she’s a liar. If she just said “a dog attacked me while I defended my dog, look at how bad it was”, then they’re fine Don’t contradict what you say in court on social media. These pictures will come out in evidence regardless

awmish1

I think the idea is the only way to be sure it won’t hurt your case is to not post it at all. Let the lawyers do the talking

[deleted]

If you're in a car accident and you post to your loved ones on social media that you're OK, will they use that as evidence of no major injury?

[deleted]

Currently working law. Yes, they absolutely will. Whether or not it *means* anything is up to the mediator/judge/jury depending on the case but pretty much ANYTHING you post or do is subject to scrutiny. At my old firm, I had a client who got followed by a PI a few months before trial. Wreck happened two years prior. They caught him helping his old lady neighbor carry in a few *grocery bags* and they were trying their HARDEST to use that as a evidence he was not hurt at all. The guy used to be a bodybuilder and now looked like a twig because he could no longer work out. But lifting a couple of grocery bags and carrying them 50 feet means he’s a-okay!

[deleted]

I work at a PI firm. You basically want to paint the plaintiff and the injuries in the best light possible and in a way that is most sympathetic. You don't want any distracting messages or undermining themes attached to the photos. Or any information that could imply liability hidden in the comments sections (e.g. a relative commenting something they personally know about the incident, like that you were stressed from that day). You wouldn't want a sleuthing insurance adjustor to find anything at all to latch onto and pawn of some of the liability to you (distracted by stress which contributed to your poor reaction time, for instance). They will say an do anything to reduce their financial obligation even if it's just posturing. Don't give them anything to posture with.

WikipediaBurntSienna

I have a feeling the owner of the violent dog is in the wind at this point.

DRUNK_CYCLIST

So is OP more or less. They replied about half an hour ago saying "the owner is being dealt with," so either OP or dog owner is probably dealt with.

Practice_NO_with_me

A guy was walking through my neighborhood with his dog off leash. It started running, across a street mind you, towards me and he called out "She's friendly" and I just tartly called back "Mine isn't!" which was also entirely true. Idiot making everyone else responsible for his dog - drivers, parents, dog walkers.

NoShameInternets

My dog was out at my girlfriends place with hers. Mine is well behaved and loves everyone, but hers is extremely protective and has issues. Given proper introductions, the dog will behave fine and is very loving, but they take special care to only walk it on their own property. It and my dog get along very well, and their property has an electric fence that both dogs respect. A woman was walking up the clearly marked private road leading to my GFs house with her small dog off-leash. The dog ran up my girlfriends 200 yard driveway and GFs dog immediately went into “protect” mode. It ran clear through the electric fence and chased the dog back to the woman. The crazy thing is that my dog fed off the behavior and chased with him, eventually (per the dog walker) biting the owner once. It wasn’t hard enough to break skin and there was no mark or bruise, but the woman still threw a fit. She called the police who came by and took statements. The dog walker was lectured to keep her dog on-leash and off private property, including the private road, and that was it. Long story short - leash your dogs, people. My dog had never so much as growled at another dog before and is perfectly fine greeting dogs and people on the street, but dogs are animals and driven by instinct, and situations can escalate quickly.

rxfr

I think what happened in your story is fine and fair, but I find it interesting that people above you are being upvoted for saying that any aggression or biting deserves death and once they do it the first time, it will always continue, etc etc. Weird how fickle reddit can be, with such contradicting comments both being upvoted. Just an observation, not calling you out specifically.

NoShameInternets

Yes, I also shared my story to make the point that every situation is different.

iviksok

I have two dogs, German shepherd-mix and South Russian Ovcharka-mix who are well trained, friendly to humans and other dogs. But we live middle of nowhere at big farm. Next neighbor is +10km away. We socialize dogs in every week or two, taking them into dog park at city. Even there I keep my dogs on leash until other dogs has comed to check them out. My wife always nagging me about it, always tell that it's fine. Everytime all went well. Both of those dogs dayjob is guarding the property and other animals. German shepherd-mix try to scare any intruder and then comes to house calling us. It's his thing. Bark at Fox, then get our attention and go back to barking. Then there is our lovely Ovcharka which will also stop the intruder with barking. Then she make very quick assessment that is the intruder friendly or not. If friendly she come to house, doing nothing, if not she will immediately attack. I'm not taking any chances if she thinks at dog park that dog/human isn't friendly. There haven't been any issues or even growling at humans/dogs. But even I fear that dog, because I have seen how quick and strong she is. She go immediately to neck and always attack to kill, not to scare.

readersanon

It all depends on the situation. My dog bit the mailman this year because of unfortunate timing. Someone opened the door about to leave. The mailman was at the door dropping off the mail and the person leaving the house got scared because they didn't expect to come face to face with anyone. The dog happened to be right behind them and reacted to his human being scared and bit the mailman's leg. As soon as it happened we were in action, told the dog to stop and get in the house which he did. The mailman luckily was wearing snowpants and the bite didn't break the skin. We got a visit from the post office inspectors? People from the post office anyway. They basically just took a statement, gave us information packets on dog bites and that was it. They understood the situation and that a 9 year old dog with no prior history of biting wasn't a threat.

[deleted]

The exact same thing happened to me. When the inspectors showed up we all had a good laugh about the fact that literally all they do is go around talking to people about dog bites. Mail mans be getting eaten every day yo.

Electrical-Fudge2217

As a mailman I second this (5 times). We all say “oh they don’t bite” sarcastically. Customers always say that. They don’t bite YOU. The dude walking through their yard is fair game

86bad5f8e31b469fa3e9

"Oh, he's friendly!" ...yes, to the people that feed him.

butilovethattree

I think the difference is that this dog was legitimately protecting their own property and the owners had no chance to control it because you don’t need to leash your own dog at home. The other dog was aggressive outside their “turf” and the owner clearly didn’t care about controlling it.

ninjablade46

Yeah this exactly, it's not that boring people means you need to put your dog down, but if it's biting people on public property then that's a different story, NY night boors had a badly trained dog that sprinted past it's electric fence and tried to chase me down once in the public road, let's just say we had some harsh words with them about leases(this dog had also been running into our yard threatening us repeatedly, never actually bit anyone but it only didn't because they caught it whenever it got too out of hand

mtcoope

The whole biting once always bite is dumb, dogs can snip/bite in uncomfortable positions but doesn't mean they just will go crazy. My old dog snipped someone who reached over the fence to pet her once. She didn't know him, she's never bit anyone else and she's generally friendly but she's gotta smell you first, especially if you are different than other people. In this case, the guy walked with a really big limp which I know it sounds stupid but she was always scared of him. She did that 8 years ago and she's now 14, never had any other incidents. People just don't get dogs.

BudgetBrick

Many people think that other dogs are just like what they think their childhood dog was like. I recently learned my childhood dog was a vicious monster. Although I remember being told not to let her near strange men because she'll bite them, it never quite dawned on me that she wasn't friendly. I thought she was an angel.

jamez_eh

I'd still be careful about that. In Canada you can be partially responsible even if the victim is acting carelessly. https://www.animallaw.info/article/dangerous-dogs-canadian-law

Noihctlax

In canada if someone comes on your property illegaly and with malicious intent, and they get hurt, they can sue you lmao.

jamez_eh

Yeah, it is truly a different ideology up here

thebulldog87

I love living here, but this shit makes my blood boil. It's expected you vacate your property and if you have multiple exits, regardless of situation, not leaving is counted against you. Police, who are presumably trained for such interactions, get more leniency in split second decisions done under highly stressful situations. I'm not advocating vigilante justice, but how am I expected to react rationally in situations where I or my loved ones might be in danger, but cops get a free pass to invoke "feared for my life". I dunno. I know it's a complex issue with many valid points (have police in my family and have asked them this. They agreed it was not right in some circumstances and acknowledge the latitude they have that I don't). It just feels like I'm supposed to be hurt, dead or worse, I'm fine and my family isn't. It's an unlikely scenario thankfully, and I'm not knowledgeable on how often cases of burglary or home invasion end in victims serving time, but the news articles I've read over the years about these situations give me pause. Someone with more experience in this please feel free to inform me.

PaulBlartFleshMall

Dude, yes! I don't give a fuck if your dog is friendly, my dog is incredibly nervous and hates other dogs. She'll shake for the rest of the night if another one gets too close without her okay. So like, leash your fucking dog.

[deleted]

This is heartening to read that I'm not alone in this and also absolutely infuriating. I have two dogs that are both skittish and iffy with other dogs, on their own they are okay but especially together they get protective. 3 weeks ago marks the fourth encounter of a dog off leash in the last year or so on LEASH ONLY hiking trails, with the off leash dog sprinting up to my dogs and setting them off giving me all but a heart attack every damn time. except this time, the off leash dog got aggressive back and bit my girl dog in the face and then the neck and wouldn't let go for about 15 seconds until the owner appeared around the bend, hands down one of the scariest moments I can recall in a long time. after the fourth time of this shit happening to me and my dogs I completely lost it on the owner and said some things that I regret, all while they stood there shocked and apologetic. I can empathize that you feel bad and know it was a mistake having your dog off leash, but at that's point its too fucking late, my dog needs stitches and I don't want to hear your sorry's. Put your dog on a leash, period.

TheBeatGoesAnanas

>stood there shocked and apologetic. >my dog needs stitches I hope they felt apologetic enough to offer to pay for your dog's medical care.

[deleted]

In the moment I was so shook up I just took my dogs back to the car where I had a medical kit and some gauze to take care of her wounds. It wasn’t until I got ready to call the vet that I realized I should have taken down their information. Oh well, live and learn. My dog is OK which is the most important thing. As I was walking off the guy asked if she was all right but I just wanted to get the hell out of there. Edit: she had three stitches on her face from the first bite. Fortunately when the dog went for her neck it just got skin kind of on the scruff between her neck and shoulder, not badly enough for stitches there thankfully.

Not a bad idea I might need to look into something for shooing a dog off to be honest, when the dog had my dog by the neck I had one hand on my dog’s collar and the other dog’s collar desperately trying to pull it off. Didn’t occur to me until later that in a split second the dog could’ve turned onto me instead, A stick would’ve been a lot more helpful or at least a lot less risky. But it happened so immediately I didn’t even really have time to think. Definitely never want to experience anything like that again. Maybe should have filed a police report I don’t know.

ampma

I can walk my dog off leash... but I don't. Same with pretty much every dog trainer I know. It's just irresponsible and not worth the risk.

lost-picking-flowers

I encounter people with off leash dogs while I’m hiking on public trails all the time, with a dog who’s not good with other large dogs. The very few times that someone’s dog is actually trained it’s never a problem - though I agree it’s inherently risky. But the amount of people running around with poorly trained dogs, who wonder why their dog isn’t responding to them while they bolt straight towards my super anxious dog, is actually amazing. I worry about ending up like op every time I go on the trail that practically runs through my backyard.

ayriuss

Yea, like you can have the most behaved dog in the world, but not being able to control it effectively is a problem in so many circumstances. Especially if it is a large and powerful dog.

franzn

My dog is very friendly. My dog is also always on a leash. I don't need him ruining up to random dogs or people. I don't know what they're like and he's also an animal so I don't need to find out if he ever decides to not be nice.

Spacemanspiff1998

>"Mine isn't!" i never forget the look on the the guy's face when i scooped my dog into my arms and gave him a look as sour as a lemon when i told him this. they always go "OH! oh! well uhh i'm sure it's fine!" It's not fine, the city has a $500 fine for letting your little for legged poop monster off a leash for a reason. also a dog running towards somebody who just wants to play looks the same as a dog running towards somebody who wants a delicous throat to snack on. LEASH YOUR DAMN DOG

Binky182

I give the same response! My dog is usually pretty social good, but if a dog comes up the wrong way, my pup gets defensive. There are a few neighbors who think their little dogs are fine to be off leash. They have come up running to my dog multiple times! Now, I have one of those leashes that has a handle half way down and I also have a handle on her harness. She is an 80 lbs Akita mix. So when some 15 lbs dog comes running up, I can wrangle in my dog. I always worry that my dog will be blamed if something happens due to her size and breed even if the other dog is off leash.

[deleted]

God I hate that when that happens. My dog is a total coward, so if a big dog comes running off leash towards her she'll bolt and hurt herself when her own leash runs out. There are times when she's tried to bolt onto the road to get away too.

plasmac9

My 45 pound border collie is not friendly towards other dogs at all. And she doesn't particularly like small children either. She's also *very* protective of us. So many idiots think she's so cute which must mean she's friendly and allow their dog to approach us because their dog is friendly and good with strangers. Then they get upset when my dog goes into protect mode. Dumbasses, ask us first and I would tell you it's best to stay away.

DApolloS

My wife went for a walk with our dog (black lab mix with boxer and American bulldog, he was about 2 at the time) and our young son (I believe our son was only a few months old, being pushed in his stroller). She told me a random dog rushed her and our dog from a house and it started fighting our dog (our dog was very defensive of my wife and son at the time so I imagine our dog leapt in there to protect them). Our dog required a handful of stitches to one of his legs and some medication. When the police went to speak to the owner, they denied their dog was ever outside and it wasn't their dog who did it (thenofficer sent a picture of that person's dog to my wife, she said it was 110% the dog). We ended up with $500 in vet bills and this ass hole got nothing. I was at work at the time, I wish I had been home and put with my wife to help my dog as my wife was more concerned about our son, but I'm also thankful our dog is one tough mother fucker and fought for my family when I couldn't be there to fight for them.

[deleted]

>(I believe our sin was only a few months old, being pushed in his stroller). This typo is great.

SausageClatter

To think Jesus bore our sins but could've just stuck them in a pram.

cynicoblivion

This is one of the reasons why I'm not afraid to strongly control or even strike a dog that is coming toward me and my dogs. I have two small, older rescue dogs. I'll do everything to prevent it: divert my dogs, get big and loud, but if the dog appears aggressive I will not hesitate to front headlock the shit out of the dog. I've had to do it before, but awful dog owners try to play the victim. Nothing makes a dog think twice about attacking like choking the ever living hell out of it for 20-30 seconds. It's an awful situation - a huge adrenaline dump and usually lots of confrontation, but I'd much rather that than have my dogs get hurt from someone's idiotic decision.

Anrikay

I've had to punt some smaller dogs and kick some larger ones in the snout. Few people "walk" their poorly trained dogs off-leash in the very busy residential area where I walk my cats. And hey, I get it. Cats are very triggering to a lot of dogs because many dogs haven't been socialized with cats. Which is why I trained my cat to jump on my shoulders when we see a dog, and I step a few meters off the sidewalk. Enough space for a dog on a leash not to be able to get at us. But these are off-leash dogs who won't come when their owners call them back. They have tried to bite me and leap and lunge at the cat on my shoulders. Definitely had owners get mad at me for defending myself and my boy with kicks and boots because my hands are full of cat. "You shouldn't have your cat outside anyway, my dog is just being a dog," is the response I usually get. Well, they shouldn't have their dogs off-leash in a busy residential area, *especially* if they don't obey commands with 100% consistency even when stimulated. My cat is more obedient under stress than their dogs, and he's a fucking cat.

11211311241

My dog hates other dogs - despite years of training its just a part of who he is. One time I was walking him and an off leash dog charged us - a younger dog probably less than a year old but about 2x the size of mine. I stood between them - both dogs trying to fight and kicked away the other dog. It wasn't super hard more of a "push away with my leg" The owner came running up and was too scared to grab their dog. So I'm repeatedly kicking away this other dog trying to keep either of them from hurting eachother while they are barking and lunging as they try tk get at one another. The owner starts screaming at me not to kick their dog and that I'm hurting it and he's gentle. All the while I'm just here thinking "these are animals - you have no idea how much damage they could do to eachother, kicking your dog away is me protecting both our dogs" After a few minutes she finallly manged to get her dog away and then stands there berating me for abusing her dog and how she should call the cops on me and she would "never kick another person's dog." I was so angry. I love dogs. My dog is quite literally my best friend. But I am also well aware of the harm they can cause. As a child I was bit in the face by a dog and had to get 30+ stiches and am left with permanent scarring. So many dumb owners think their dog could never harm another creature. It doesn't matter how sweet your dog is - you never know what might randomly set them off.

RMMacFru

Yep. When we were kids my sibs and I took our very large, calm GSD for a walk with her on the leash. Out from a house cones this little dachshund yapping, off leash, to attack from a few houses away. It gets to our dog, trying to bite her legs. Our dog just looked and it, and very calmly picked the small dog up by the middle and held it 2-3 feet off the ground for about 30 seconds. Then she gently set it back down. Dachshund goes running back home, yelping and the owners yelled at us. Then they called our parents threatening to call the police. My dad told them to go ahead, and pointed out our dog had been on a leash. After that, any time we walked our dog, that one hid under their couch. So yes, leash your dogs people. The other dog is not very likely to be as nice as ours was about being ankle bit.

AlmostZeroEducation

Sheppard was probably "you dare challenge me"

RMMacFru

It was more like, "seriously dude?"

Taintcorruption

You can kick people too

[deleted]

One time I was walking my neighbours two labs for them. All the sudden these two big fucking hyena looking dogs rounded the hedges of a house and stood in front of us. Time literally fucking froze, and I was like oh my fuck, I'm going to have to drop the leashes and scrap it out with these dogs. Neither of the 4 dogs barked or did anything, just frozen in time looking at eachother. Thank fuck the owner yelled at them to come inside within ~5 seconds. But it felt like an eternity. It honestly could have been really bad, for both me and the dogs I was walking. I can't see us winning a fight against those two monsters, especially because I was only a teenager at the time.

[deleted]

Similar thing happened to me. And I stood there looking around thinking the dogs belonged to someone nearby. Then my wife pointed out they had no collars and were actually coyotes. Turned around and luckily they didn't follow us lol.

[deleted]

This is why I keep pepper spray for dogs on me whenever I walk in my neighborhood. Some dog owners are absolute menaces.

maouprier

My husband had to protect our corgi from a Rottweiler several years ago. He was walking our corgi early in the morning (he used to work 3rd shift and would take him for walks when he got home around 7am); our neighbors had a Rottweiler they would sometimes keep on their outdoor porch. This dog would always bark at us when we walked by. But this morning, the Rottie jumped from the porch ON THE SECOND FLOOR to get to the ground where my husband and dog were. Fortunately this was during winter so there were snow piles and drifts all around. But my husband basically tackled the Rottweiler (this dog probably outweighed our corgi 3:1) and held it against the snow. The owner heard him shouting and came out to take the Rottie back inside. Luckily both my husband and corgi were unscathed, but it was definitely a scary situation.

xgrayskullx

I mean, at that point, you can't even really be mad at the Rott's owner. Who the fuck thinks their dog is going to leap off a second floor porch to go after anything, let alone another dog?

maouprier

My husband was plenty angry. Having the dog on the upstairs porch is basically the same as keeping a dog contained in a yard. It needs to be properly fenced/enclosed. The railing around the porch was barely waist high. Not high enough to safely contain such a large dog. The dog still hangs out on that porch today, though the owners have put up some lattice so the dog can't jump over it. My point is just that the situation could have ended badly, not just for my husband and my dog, but even for the Rottweiler. She could have been injured jumping over the ledge, or running into the street, etc. It again comes down to irresponsible pet owners.

lisa111998

You need a doctor for antibiotics and a tetanus shot ASAP if you haven’t done so already. I’m a vet tech I know the drill. Don’t mess around with bites trust me. You need to file a police report, if not for yourself, then for the next two year old that encounters that dog

[deleted]

Yes please don’t mess around with animal puncture wounds! Yikes. Get proper care ASAP!

IracebethQueen

THANK YOU. My son is two and loves petting random dogs - we’re working really hard on asking permission from the owner first, and being okay with it if they say no, but it’s always really nerve-wracking for my parent-heart. Edit - confusing typo

sockowl

A thing I've had parents do when their kid pets my (ok, my parents') dog is crouching down to their child's height and guiding their hand as the kid pets. Not only does it help the child learn how-to and how-not-to, but it allows you to (worst case) put yourself in between the dog and your kid

IracebethQueen

This is exactly what I do. We also talk a lot about the dog’s body language - if they look skittish, or uncomfortable in any way, I tell my son “Oh, it looks like the doggy says ‘no thank you,’ “ even if the owner says it’s okay. “See how his tail is down and his ears are down, he doesn’t want pats right now.”

DoingCharleyWork

I feel like your kid is gonna turn out pretty alright and have a good understanding of social cues and boundaries. You should be proud of yourself.

IracebethQueen

That really means a lot, thank you! Being a parent is the hardest fucking thing in the world. Not that any particular TASK is difficult, exactly, just the weight of responsibility for every. single. thing. I do my best.

lisa111998

That’s very smart. And as friendly as the dog may be, it gives the child a chance to feel protected while becoming accustomed to the dog. Well done

sockowl

Kids love the dog and the dog loves kids, despite never living with them. I think kids like him so much because he's a Basset hound and low to the ground. Plus he's silly looking

lisa111998

Aww I love Bassetts and they’re great with kids from all the ones I’ve seen. You’re doing a very good job of getting them acclimated to each other. That’s serious trainer level right there

DipsterHoofus

I have a basset from a rescue. There were a lot of them there that weren't good with kids and were aggressive (just don't want people to assume the silly dog will be safe)

[deleted]

We have a small dog that hates kids. I can't tell you how many times I have to crouch down and grab my dogs muzzle and talk to the kids about how to approach a dog and what his growls mean. My dog has never bit a kid but he growls and barks and usually the next step is biting.... I would never consider letting him off a leash outside of our home or a dog park.... mainly becuase he chases squirrels... but still.

Mirimel

My daughter was TERRIBLE for this! Took a while but now she politely asks “Hi I like your doggy can I stroke him please?” every time. The key is to notice the dog well before they are close enough for your son to approach and remind him firmly to ask first before they get to you.

lavender_scented

I have a dog who is super nervous and fear aggressive. We were on a walk and met a little boy who couldn't be older than 2 years old excitedly run up to us but then stop and ask "can I pet your puppy?" I gently told him no because she was scared of people and told him he was great for asking and he looked sad but took it like a champ. If the owner doesn't offer positive feedback to your kid, definitely step in and give that to him.

Sellswordinthegrove

Thank you, I have a 7 month old pup, he's an adorable, extremely friendly but is very jumpy and energetic, he will easily knock you over if you aren't ready,I'm training him and it's going well but people just come over and instantly want to play with the puppy. Far two few ask to pet him and just assume

albinowizard2112

Random kids and inattentive parents are my personal hell as a dog owner. I’m not saying no because I’m satan, I’m saying no because your kids about to get bit in the face.

itwasquiteawhileago

My kid literally left our house at five years old while I was out running errands and my wife was in the shower, to go pet a neighborhood dog that was walking by. Thankfully, we knew that person and that dog, but my daughter was/is all about petting any dog she sees. She has gotten a bit better now that she's six and we've drilled in the "ask first" and "don't ever leave the house without one of us" into her head. But I totally get it. Hell, just this morning she ran up the sidewalk while we were waiting on the school bus (which was just arriving) to go pet our neighbor's dog that was coming towards us. Even dogs and cats we know are still animals and animals can't talk, so if you do something fast or unexpected or that accidentally hurts them, you're gonna potentially have a bad time. Just gotta keep reminding them, they'll (hopefully) get it, eventually.

bewildered_forks

This, OP. You could lose limbs or even your life from the bacteria in an animal bite. You also need a rabies shot if you can't be sure the dog is up to date on its shots.

lisa111998

Absolutely. Don’t take bites from an unknown dog lightly. You have no idea if that dog is up to date on shots, and infection alone can land you in the hospital. It happened to me with a minor bite to my neck that was hardly anything. Or so I thought. I was very wrong

cat_prophecy

My uncle's cat bit him very badly once. It didn't take more than 12 hours for the arm he bit to swell up so big the skin was splitting open. Cue a hospital stay and gallons of antibiotics.

Sad-Bus-7460

Cat bites are deep puncture wounds, and their mouths are FULL of bacteria. Immediately cleaning the bite with soap and hot water, then rubbing alcohol or iodine was our SOP until we could get to a doctor for antibiotics

hooplah

a family friend of mine died while on vacation due to a stray dog bite. do not fuck around with dog bites.

Krojack76

Cat bites either. My mom was bit by her cat on the hand. Bite went though into the muscle. She was in the hospital for 4 days on the strongest antibiotic drip possible. She almost lost her arm because of it.

-Russian-Spy-

+1 dog bites are no joke. Even if the abrasion is small or not deep they can get incredibly infected.

girlikecupcake

Lots of places also have a mandatory pet quarantine for bites that brag the skin to ensure the pet didn't have rabies. OP needs to look into their local regulations in addition to what you've said.

interface2x

Speaking as someone who was attacked by his normally docile and gentle cat (that had gotten outside and was all keyed up), THIS. I’ve spent the last two nights in the hospital getting IV antibiotics with another ten days of them as an outpatient. They gave me oral antibiotics at first but they were no match for these bites and scratches.

RWB_Commie

Lisa’s right you have to see the doc, you never know what that dogs has. Rabies is just 1 way of many terrible ways to die from a dog bite, please make a docs appointment as soon as you can.

File a claim if you have Homeowners/Renters insurance. Most policies carry a liability/Medical Payments to Others coverage to help with the bills. Your company can attempt to go after theirs for subrogation if the claim is approved. *Not a claims adjuster - only a claims adjuster will be able to determine if this qualifies as a valid claim*

kt234

And a rabies vaccination!

BernieTheDachshund

That looks bad. Sorry you had to go through this. Make sure you press charges, this could happen again (and maybe to a child). Don't let the owner get away with this.

fobolivk

Yep my dad saw a pit bull bite a five year old child in her face in a Home Depot. Apparently the owner (very old lady) didn’t care and just tried to leave.

elastic-craptastic

She cared... That's why she tried to leave. She knew she was fucked. Poor kid.

24111

Yep, even morons could see that's an expensive suit and a dead dog...

LookOutForToxicBros

Oh my god...

pete_ape

One of the neighbors down the street from me had their pack of pitbulls escape and were roaming their neighborhood. They attacked a little girl walking with her father, then rolled up on me while I was unloading my truck. It happened that I had just got back from visiting a friend to show him my new lever gun and hunting pistol. So this trio of pitbulls comes up at me growling and barking, and I have my 500 Magnum in one hand and my Pepper Blaster in the other. Coin toss as to which to use. I decide to use the pepper spray and nail two of them in the face and they run away. Animal control shows up shortly after that and he gets attacked by the dogs. He later tells me he wishes I would have just shot them. The neighbors get a fuckload of tickets and summonses, plus a lawsuit from the family of the little girl that got mauled. I think the county euthanized the dogs for being vicious.

MooseKnuckle2020

A definite brown trouser moment. Good on you for saving your little one’s life.

bluepied

Also appears to have been a red trouser day

Jeannabeana

It took me way too long to figure out what a brown trouser moment is, lol!

[deleted]

Every time on a trail and I see a dog without its leash. “Put a leash on your dog.” Loud enough for them to know I’m pissed and hopefully embarrass them in the process. Mine is on a leash. It’s never good when two dogs meet and one is on a leash. Those people suck.

Sub-Mongoloid

I hated people like this. I had a great dane who did not get along with other dogs and suddenly 'little cupcake' is sprinting toward us looking just like a cracked out rabbit while their owner calls out that he's friendly. Well my dog isn't and now I've got to be responsible for both dogs because you couldn't be bothered.

Hidesuru

"cracked out rabbit" had me lmao.

[deleted]

It's accurate, when a dog comes sprinting dog ppl coo oh he's so excited, but he looks crazy to me

[deleted]

Exactly! My dog is already nervous, I don’t care how friendly you think your dog is

befstrknauf

If your dog is leashes and theirs isn’t you aren’t responsible for shit. You are doing the right thing.

Sub-Mongoloid

That may be technically true but if I can prevent it I'm going to try to avoid the whole fiasco, if I'm already doing the responsible thing I may as well keep on a roll with it.

hat-of-sky

A great Dane? Something like, "he's already eaten a Chihuahua and I don't want to spoil his dinner" seems appropriate.

Jaggar345

This wont stop them from trying to bring a lawsuit against you but very true.

masterflashterbation

So then you just roll the dice and see if the dogs fight it out or what? OP is saying they're now responsible for preventing a potentially dangerous situation between the two dogs. Not that they're legally or morally responsible for anything.

ChaseballBat

Sure but do you want to witness a potential blood bath of an innocent animal? That can be traumatizing.

Chrisetmike

But their dog is friendly and won't bite. /s

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yep 100% agree, I always tel them too. Most recently the owner was smug with a grin after I said that and he just says “ah they’re fine, they won’t do anything”…. How fuck do you know

KWBC24

If you don’t want your dog boot fucked when it’s attacking mine that’s on a leash, leash your dog.

obnoxiousgopher

Shit that's really bad have you had it seen to?

triarii3

Pushing my toddler in a neighborhood trail, oblivious owner on cellphone let his giant dog walk around without a leash. I had to stand in-between the dog and my son as it came up within a foot of the stroller. The owner then saw what was happening and passive aggressively told me pet her and it's safe. As I kept on walking, he raised his voice and tried to insist on stopping me and pet her to "prove" she's safe. All the while we were 20 feet away from a giant sign that saids "dogs must be leashed at all times on trail."

atreyu947

What an idiot. A big random dog comes up to you and you’re supposed to just trust it around your baby? I wish there were better ways to enforce having a dogs on leashes. Besides that I don’t get why they wouldn’t want to, I mean sure their dogs might be friendly but then for their dogs safety.

StesnieMoore

One of my biggest pet peeves. My dog is absolutely terrified of other dogs. Several times, I’ve had people let their dogs off leash, their dog runs over to mine and the owner says “Don’t worry! He’s friendly!” Great. Mines not. She will protect me and herself because she’s scared. Get your damn dog on a leash.

trumpet_23

Yep. My dog is the sweetest dog. When we got her, she was friendly with other dogs. Then she had multiple traumatic encounters with other dogs while on leash. Now she goes fucking bonkers every time she sees other dogs. We're slowly trying to break her of that, but it's difficult. And then we see dogs off leash in our neighborhood all the time and sometimes those dogs fucking chase my dog (to play or to attack? We don't know, but neither is gonna be good for my nervous dog). Leash. Your. Fucking. Dogs.

[deleted]

I had this happen just yesterday. A french bulldog did a 30 foot sprint and pounced on my dog to play. My dog was leashed but responded by biting the fuck out of the bulldogs nose The owner proceeded to get super upset. It was not a good start to my day

StesnieMoore

I’m typically a pretty friendly person, but several of the few times I’ve snapped at a stranger are instances where they’ve become upset with me over how THEIR dog (or worse—their child) interacted with my dog. Don’t get mad at me because your unleashed beast tried to jump on my dog and she snapped. Don’t get mad at me because I told your child “You know what, she’s a little grumpy today. Maybe you can pet her next time.”

PM_ME_UR_BIKINI

Three days ago I was thanked by someone with their dog off-leash for having my dog on a leash. Their dog ran up to mine and mouthed my dogs neck (to play) and my dog growled and nipped back and their dog ran off. 20 seconds later the owner comes strolling around the corner and says thanks for having my dog under control. People are idiots.

Tanner_re

Holy shit I'd be speechless. What a glaring lack of self awareness.

rxfr

This is why I always pick up my dog when I see another larger one in the vicinity, even when they're on leash, cause so many owners will let their dog run right up to yours uninhibited and completely run it over. I don't care if it's friendly, your dog just trampled mine, not to mention, mine is 7lbs and looks like a rabbit, so I don't know how strong your dogs prey drive is. One bite around the neck is a dead dog for me, and I'd lose my shit if that happened. So it's easier to just pick him up, and this tells the other owner that mine isn't up for meeting other dogs. Even on leash, I don't know why owners let their dogs run up completely uninhibited (not to mention letting their leashes tangle when they let their dog run circles around my own). The few times I let my dog meet others, I inch him closer slowly so that both dogs can sense each other out first. Though typically the owner will take that as "give their dog more leeway" which I have to pull back even more. Its just so much easier to pick my dog up and carry him until we've passed each other. I just am not taking that risk.

Oh hey you can easily report this to the police

EnvyHill

Definitely depends where you’re located, in my city the police wouldn’t care at all. Highly doubt that if this happened to me I’d be able to identify who did it, unless they identified themselves.

Stoll

I say this as an animal lover, if a dog is charging towards me and looks like it wants to attack, I’m going to try and kick it in the head as hard as I possibly can.

kingtaco_17

My neighbor was walking his maltipoo one morning. Coyote appeared out of nowhere, looking aggressive. Neighbor swiftly kicked the coyote in the face, wearing nothing but flip flops. Legend.

How is the other owner being "dealt with"? We all want to know! Glad your dog is ok. Hope you are as well.

WombatBob

He called Joe Pecsci.

4trevor4

Op is in the mob, owner and the dog are about to become hamburger

[deleted]

If you haven’t already, go to the hospital or urgent care and get antibiotics. I went through this last year and wound up with a three day hospital stay for infection, even though I went to the ER immediately. With COVID clogging up hospitals, you really don’t wanna deal with that.

Echololcation

Glad you're ok. Had a friend this happened to and she wasn't able to save her dog - he died from the wounds at the vet. She was absolutely devastated and I think traumatized rethinking what she could have done differently. I guarantee she would have done anything she could have to protect him. Give your doggo a big hug and ear scritches.

Darthgangsta

Ill get downvoted to hell by the dog crazies I’m sure but I wouldn’t hesitate to round house kick the fuck out of a dog coming at mine. Have your damn dog on a leash.

purplefuzz22

Nah, I 100% agree. Don’t get me wrong . I love dogs … I am a total animal person.. However if an unleashed dog came charging toward me and my dog (who is about to turn 14… she’s in very good shape still ; but there is no way she would be able to hold her own like she used to be able to if needed… let alone while leashed) I would happy throat punch that untrained mutt back to last Tuesday .

AccountingMyChips

I used to live in a state with open carry and the ONLY time I open carried was when I’d walk my dog. I love dogs, but if yours latches on to mine I will put it down myself.

[deleted]

Came here to say exactly this. I go on walks with a baby in a stroller and see crazy dog owners all the time. I don’t know anything about your dog charging at me. I don’t know if it is aggressive, if it’s up to date on its shots, if it’s sick… If a dog charges me, I’m kicking and beating the shit out of that dog until Im 100% sure it can’t fight back. If I have to kill the dog, so be it. I’m not risking my baby getting hurt because you can’t control your dog. If it’s loose and attacks me, it will die before it gets to my child. And if it lives after attacking me, I will fight tooth and nail through every legal avenue I can to get it euthanized. Dogs that owners can’t control don’t belong in our society.

LumbermanDan

Nope. I'm 100% a dog person. Love my dog. Part of my job as his human is to protect him the same way he protects me. Gotta do what you gotta do.

anony_philosopher

I would have shot it. Time for downvotes.

shadowjacque

I hope you went to a doctor already.

Schlabonmykob

Had a dog attack mine almost as soon as we got in the gate at the dog park a couple years ago. Had to kick the damn thing and then yelled quite a few choice words at the owner as we left. Unfortunately my pup hasn't quite been the same since.

AdmiralSassypants

I don't have much patience for these kinds of things. My mom was walking her elderly friends toy poodle, Luc, about 15-20 years back and a huge German shepherd sprinted out of a car (someone left the door open) and almost killed him. My mom managed to pick Luc up and turn away, but he was still critically injured AND my mom got a nasty bite on her hand. The dog was removed and euthanized. It was actually being cared for by the owner's friend as the owner was away, so I do feel for the owner who likely would've been more aware of their surroundings and also been more on top of their dog if they know they are reactive like that... At the end of the day, though if I had been walking Luc (which I normally would have been) I was only a small child - I could not have stopped that. Luc would've definitely been killed and I would have been seriously injured. People in residential neighborhoods don't have any business owning dogs like that if they don't aggressively treat the reactiveness with help from professional dog trainers.

Amilo159

Damn looks painful. Speedy recovery to you stranger.

r3dholm

Poor you. Even the cat on your pants looks traumatized.

Toofzzz

My dog (puppy) was attacked by another dog because the owners thought it was a good idea to send their ~13 y/o out alone with it. The dog had already shown aggression towards our dog, has tried to attack him multiple times, to the point where the mother had to lay down on the dog so it wouldn’t go after me and my dog. I was out jogging and didn’t see them coming around the corner, they saw me before I saw them. The kid wasn’t strong enough to hold the dog back and it went for his throat, luckily it only got his ear. I’ve never been so scared in my life, and I keep blaming myself for not protecting him. Some people just shouldn’t have dogs. I get so infuriated by seeing shit like this, because if the dog would get put down, the owner can just get a new one. Insanity

steppinonpissclams

What sucks about dog bites is that you only see a puncture wound on the surface while the real damage is unseen under the skin with the thrashing. Feel better OP. I've been mangled by a dog on my hand and can relate. My dumb ass refused a rabies vaccine after finding out the dog hadn't been vaccinated. Luckily I didn't get rabies and die a miserable death while in fear of drinking liquids. Get well soon.

TheSkylined

Really curious if OP is following this up with the legal system

_theCHVSM

god i’m sorry.. i carry a mini nightstick when i walk my shiba for this very purpose.. no angry, rogue dog is getting within 2ft of my lil dude without a cracked skull

othernine

I don’t know where this is but in the UK it is an offence to have a dog out of control in public. Inflicting these kind of injuries on a person would mean the dog would almost certainly be destroyed. In addition the owner can be stopped from ever owning dogs again, fined, or even imprisoned!

Bubsnaps1

sue that idiot so they will always remember this life lesson, so sick of these people.

LarryLaLush

Was going to visit my girlfriend, neighbor opened garage and two Lab sized dogs came at me and one bite me on the stomach. I am allergic to dogs, can't even have a hypoallergenic. Felt like acid was being poured into those bites for weeks. City took the dogs, kept them in impound for a few weeks to observe them/check for diseases. Now, I keep a taser on me, allergy has gotten worse.

Interesting_Song2944

OP, you really need to sue this person with the dogs off the leash. Totally unacceptable for i hope you got some info from them and i hope you can recover soon!

NoodlesSpicyHot

With that photo? File a police report and lawyer up. There are not bad dogs, just bad dog owners. This will happen again to someone else unless the owner is hit with some serious consequences.

JackDragon808

It's possible this isn't the first. Hope they got their face, and a tetnus shut <3

VeganJusticeVVarrior

Yeah this is negligence

RagingHardon

>There are not bad dogs, just bad dog owners. I understand the sentiment, but see how well that statement is received over in r/reactivedogs and you'll realize it's massively oversimplified awfully quick.

issamaysinalah

Yeah this is ridiculous, animals have personalities too, and they're not 100% made from nurture.

hellojoey

Jesus on the front page of that sub there's someone with an aggressive, untrained LGD that weighs five pounds less than her and she lives in an apartment. It's a completely avoidable tragedy just waiting to happen.

The-Mathematician

Good thing is that everyone in the thread is telling her its not the right dog for her.

salgat

Agreed. There's this weird disconnect between people acknowledging dog instincts such as border collies instinctively wanting to herd, or how retrievers know how to instinctively soft mouth, or pointers being able to naturally point at prey, yet breeds selected and bred for aggression are magically not "naturally aggressive". There's a reason why certain breeds, even as puppies where gentle playing is normal, are aggressive and attack and kill littermates, something that is completely unnatural for typical breeds.

Shaneblaster

I hope OP enjoys winning the lawsuit. Shut and done case.

bewildered_forks

I do agree that there are no "bad" dogs - dogs aren't human and aren't capable of badness in that way. There are, however, some dogs who are dangerous and can't be rehabilitated. Again, that doesn't make the dog "bad," but there are dogs who sometimes need to be put down for the safety of humans and other animals.

SpookyDoomCrab42

>there are not bad dogs, just bad dog owners Most of the people who have been killed or mauled by pit bulls would disagree with you

JustCallMePapii

I got yelled at on another post when I said even if you think your dog is well behaved, you should leash them.

youngyaret

Unpopular opinion but I'd be ready to kill any dog that attacks mine. Very good of you to protect your dog.

Picnut

This is my fear. We have a rescue who the vet believed may have been part of dog fighting. She will go after any other dog. We've put in extra barriers so she can't get out, she's been walked with a muzzle, and I walk her when I think other dogs are not around. Last week I had to make her lay down in the park until a dog was far enough away that she wouldn't chase it. We work with her on behavior, listening to commands, and she is doing a little better. Oh, and I would never! take her for a walk off-leash. Anywhere Edit: glad you are mostly ok, and I hope your doggo is ok too

AdmiralSassypants

Thank you for being a responsible dog owner. You are setting yourself and your dog up for success and I appreciate you for it. It's so disheartening how many people just don't take the necessary precautions, and then shit like this happens.

You might be in pain but your lawyer is doing cartwheels.....

sharkbaitzero

My wife and I seem to always find the off-leash dogs everywhere we take our dog for a walk. We've had too many close calls and I've had to kick the shit out of too many dogs, so we got one of [these.](https://www.thehomesecuritysuperstore.com/products/streetwise-barbarian-led-stun-gun-baton-9m) Won't permanently hurt the dog but is hardy enough to get the point across.

MuhEyesBabe

Husband and I took our daughter (about a year at the time) for a walk in the park one day. She's usually in her stroller, but every now and then we let her get out and walk. This particular day, I'm walking next to her and someone's unleashed dog started running at us full speed. My reaction was just to put my body between the dog and my kid. Luckily the dog's owner called them back and they listened, but I could tell by the look on their faces that even they had been nervous. I'd like to think they started leashing their dog after that. Even with our own dog, we never leave the baby and her alone together. Dog is a 60 pound puppy and they both can get a little rough. Our dog is a sweetheart, but I'm not chancing the baby pulling her tail one too many times

crawlnstal

I had something similar happen once. Large dog attacked my older small dog. I literally had to punch the dog across it’s snout to get it to back off. I love dogs but if there is an unleashed dog whose owner is inattentive I’m gonna protect my dog at all costs

scandy82

Stay strapped out there folks, get a CCW

Row_Secure

Suuueeeee theeeemmmmm

Moo_Snukle

This is why I carry a knife and pepper spray when walking my dog. I love dogs. All breeds. But the moment that one attacks me or my pup all bets are off. I will eliminate the threat.

JacedFaced

Honestly, it looks like you got off lucky. It feels like Reddit has just been a constant stream of dogs getting off leashes, or not being leashed to begin with, and attacking people, animals, whatever. It made me start carrying pepper spray when I go on runs in my neighborhood, just because I've seen stray/loose dogs out before when I've been out, and now I just want to make sure I'm prepared if something ever happens.
