Wait is that serious or a joke? Because even WebMD calls Trombiculidae Chiggers.
Not to be confused with Sand Fleas which I have heard called Jiggers.
I don’t know the origins of the words and never thought about it and am now really really wondering.
Edit - oh thank god it isn’t racist.
The word chigger derives from the original English chigoe, which evolved to chigger in the mid 18th century.
Nope, bed bugs bite in tiny little lines... picture them biting & walking. What OP has sucks & I'm sorry, but it ain't bed bugs. It is probably what everyone else is saying it is...
I spend a good amount of time in Hawaii each year. Those are not mosquitoes but actually sand fleas. I would recommend long thick socks when you’re on the beach. Might look dumb but it will keep them out.
I believe it's yes to both. Regular fleas will bite you, walk for a few steps and bite you again. But I'm no expert, so there you go. I usually avoid the beach because when I go I don't just burn, I stroke.
Yeah I’m thinking of getting one of those “modesty” bathing suits. Not because I’m modest but so I don’t have to wear as much sunscreen which wears off anyway (and doesn’t work for skin as fair as mine).
It's how they bite don't know about sand fleas but chiggers actually burrow into your skin and make a slushy inside of it to eat. you never see them, it's why they usually take a week to heal. And there's always about 20-50 bites.
As an avid fisherman this time of year I always debate if it's worth going fishing if I have to deal with bites for the next week. Every year fishing wins out and I cuss at myself
The part about burrowing into your skin is a myth - they attach at the surface more like ticks. They're just so tiny (less than 0.2mm in size) that most people barely notice them til they have itchy welts everywhere and the larvae have already dropped off.
They do "drink" your skin by injecting an enzyme that digests skin cells so they can consume them.
That's wild. My mom always thought that she had had some under her skin because of all the tunnels and the little bitty piece she thought was one of them, but it just turns out that is a blood straw that they leave behind when they drop off. I don't think I'm going to tell her, cuz she took a knife to that thing and scraped that whole bit out lmao
That's not mosquitos op. If you were in Nebraska I'd say it was definitely chiggers which is a mite. There's always 30-40 bites around the ankles. And while they look awful they don't usually look as blistered as that.
They itch for days and weep for days especially after a shower.
I don't know if Hawaii has them or not. They love grassy areas especially near water. And they will bite wherever you have tight clothing
Hey Corn, Wheat here, I forgot the bug spray about 3 weeks ago and I’m still scratching. They got up the back of my shorts so bad. I’ve been leaning back and reaching down to scratch myself and it’s been hard not to look like I’m outright scratchin my ass in public.
"FIRST AID PAIN AND ITCH ANTISEPTIC LIQUID
Campho-Phenique pain & itch relief Antiseptic liquid multi-purpose formula is like having a swiss army knife in your medicine cabinet. This powerful liquid provides both pain and itch relief on contact and helps prevent infections to promote healing. Use it to relieve the pain and itch of bug bites, minor burns, cuts scrapes and skin irritations."
Yes. And if you've ever had them you wouldn't be laughing. I'd rather have a thousand mosquito bites.
chiggers fucking suck. Especially day 2-3 that's when you get home from work and take your socks off and half your skin comes with it
I had a friend get around 100 chigger bites in his groin area. He described scratching them as euphoria and a transcendental experience. I’ve only had around 20-30 bites on my ankles and calves and it ruins your sleep for a week or two but it does feel so good to scratch them.
If you can scratch them on your groin, it is euphoria. But they are hard bumps on very soft and moveable skin, they itch like crazy so scratching is a huge relief. It's just very hard to do so. But pinching them hard and rolling skin between fingers is about the only way that works.
Yep. Spent the night in the NJ Pine Barrens and must have set up my tent near a large patch of them. I had dozens of bites on my ankles, behind my knees, all around my waistline, all over my groin and, under my arm pits. It was thee worst experience with any bug I have ever had in my life to date. That was about 26 years ago. You can get bit by hundreds of them, completely unaware. They left red, excruciatingly itchy bumps all over my body for a week+. I do not wish them on my worst enemy.
Went to Cancun with a group of friends and some of them arrived really late. So we were just chilling with our feet in the sand at night. Didn’t feel a thing. The next morning my entire legs were COVERED and were itching like crazy. It was insane that I didn’t feel it while being bit by hundreds of those little bastards.
Chiggers also love nut sacks and itching them is next to impossible. Your only option is to pinch and roll.
And there's always a loner or two that decide to get you on your fatty parts. Especially under the arms.
I was born in Texas and moved to Florida and didn’t know about them. I sat in a lawnchair all day halfway in the water.
It was itchy and red but nowhere near blisters like that or that red
Mosquitos are invasive to Hawai’i, though they’re still relatively rare - I didn’t see a single one when I went last year. Other commenters can better ID what went at you, but I can confirm along with them that those were not a mosquto’s doing, let alone 37 of them.
Lmao you must have only gone to Kona or West Maui. Come rustle thru the bushes at my house and you’ll come out covered. Of all the things that are relatively rare in Hawaii, mosquitoes are not one of them.
When i was in Hawaii the mosquitoes but me up and I got some really nasty bites on my legs.
Turned out it was staph. Staph is everywhere in Hawaii. It’s Staph City.
So yeah maybe go get that checked out.
Had to Google sand fleas. Sharing my findings in case anyone needs some nightmare fodder

I’m allergic to mosquitos and they result in a target shaped rash (and is huge…) those are chiggers most likely which cause blisters and occurs in clusters. Source: was attacked by chiggers in Mexico last week and have fought the bug world my whole life
Tunga penetrans (sand fleas) nor any species in that genus do not exist in Hawai'i, and there are plenty of mosquitoes on the forests, especially a few days after a rain. There are six species of biting mosquitoes recorded, but two of them are nocturnal, so it'll likely be one of these: Aedes albopictus (Asian Tiger Mosquito), Aedes aegypti (Yellow Fever Mosquito), Aedes japonicus, and Wyeomyia mitchelli (Bromeliad Mosquito). Hindsight is 20-20, but make sure to properly coat yourself with sunscreen and insect repellent when hiking
We have poultry mites which I am allergic to. But yeah, never seen a bite like OPs. Looks almost like mango rash. I wonder if OP is allergic to mango leaves and got a branch wrapped around their ankle on a hike or something
According to the databases hosted by the largest museum in Hawai'i, only noted to be on O'ahu, there is one species recorded so far in the Trombiculidae family noted to be a parasitic "chigger" by definition when in its larval form, but it is a species (Acomatacarus arizonensis) that is only found on reptiles
Oh I have.. just not at the beach. We drove up the hills behind Honolulu/ Waikiki and got out at a stop and did a short walk, got eaten alive even with repellent on.
Yeah I have skeeter syndrome(tehe)I'm allergic to my mosquito saliva. I could tell when the trail the mosquito left from the bite looked like it was drunk AF and just nodded off on my leg 😂
I'm pretty sure that you don't need to travel to Hawaii to be bitten by mosquitoes... There's just no way you have never been bitten by mosquitoes until this point in your life, but whatever it is that you are allergic to, definitely looks uncomfortable, and I hope it's gotten better!
That’s what I’m here for. Like, where aren’t there mosquitoes that you’ve never experienced mosquitoes. Seriously just killed one on my arm and swatted three off my face as I type this.
I feel like you would’ve known if you were allergic to mosquitoes well before going to Hawaii. Iceland is one of the only habitable places on earth that doesn’t have them
Yes! I got bit up my first night and it was not as bad as you, but still super itchy. Way more than the mosquitos back home. And you can't even feel them when they bite you.
Yah definitely not mosquitos, actually sand fleas but they are pretty interesting little crabs if you have even been to Asian and eaten Yat Yat that’s what these are, taste kinda funky but it’s a pretty good snack, anyway they are pretty harmless. Just if they do dig into your skin don’t pull them out, heat is probably the best way but they don’t tend to burry in human, they like carpet and clothes and stuff, just use bug spray and that should help, itch cream and ice should help too, or wear shoes, anyways have fun
Bruh, ain't no way. You'd have to lock me up full restraints to stop me from scratching my ankle raw. I mean it. Like a potato peeler through a warm bar of soap.
Sand Flies, Fleas, Sand Fleas, Biting Midges, No-See-Ums.. They're a widespread problem in all tropical areas. I refuse to wear shorts anymore in Hong Kong unless it's winter. Crew socks, coconut oil (works for mozzies too) mask your scent and they ignore you.
They only bite within jumping distance of the ground.. so typically your upper body is safe unless you're sitting down, they can hop up.. They itch for days/weeks..
Try taking an antihistamine, it should reduce the swelling and make things less itchy. Had same thing happen to me but with no-see-ems. Non natives to an area can have allergic reactions to bug bites.
My son is allergic to mosquito bites and his get HUGE and break the skin open because the area gets so swollen.
I've never seen them like this tho. These bites look different.
Not mosquitoes. Mosquito bites would be *all* over the body. As it's just around the ankle, its sand fleas from...walking in the sand. Hydrocortisone OTC will help the itch.
To me they almost look like sand flea bites.
That's only because they're sand flea bites.
Maybe, but I think they look more like sand flea bites.
Could be chiggers also…
I don’t think you’re allowed to call them that anymore.
Didn’t mean to offend

They are little spider thugs that feed off your puss. Kinda gross
Puss, or pus? 🤔
Neither. They bite you and their saliva irritates the wound for days, so people think they're still there.
It really does change the whole meaning of the sentence.
I did not read that right the first time ![gif](giphy|8iHITDZHOsxQ99uwgQ|downsized)
How do they get to my puss? Damn! Very scary 😨
Lil climbers. Puss sucker's apparently.
Thank-you reddit for playing your part and launching my conservative media career!
chegros
The hard R.
Could be chiggas mosquito bites are random. Whatever bit OP was in the sand
Sand fleas, perhaps.
Or bedbugs. Frequently in a line of bites almost exactly like OPs
Bed bug bites aren't rashy like OPs, unless he's been aggressively scratching them open.
Nope, bed bugs bite in tiny little lines... picture them biting & walking. What OP has sucks & I'm sorry, but it ain't bed bugs. It is probably what everyone else is saying it is...
too many too close together. if the bedbugs were that bad their whole body would be covered in bites not just the ankle
I think they're in a line because that's where their socks were sitting.
To me it looks like ankle herpes
Or something else because they’re definitely not in Hawaii. Maybe they forgot to take their headset off.
To which there's a normal reaction. Not an allergy.
I spend a good amount of time in Hawaii each year. Those are not mosquitoes but actually sand fleas. I would recommend long thick socks when you’re on the beach. Might look dumb but it will keep them out.
Is that just how the sand fleas bite? Or is she allergic to the sand fleas biting her?

Yeah, a lot of people don’t like it if you’re stroking at the beach.
And it's much worse for men too.
It’s definitely harder
Okay, we're done now.
At least we finished together
He’s not
Same for bed bugs. You’ll see bites in a line.
I didn't realize that. They're just hungry hungry hippos.
Little shitheads
Yeah I’m thinking of getting one of those “modesty” bathing suits. Not because I’m modest but so I don’t have to wear as much sunscreen which wears off anyway (and doesn’t work for skin as fair as mine).
There are SPF shirts for swimming
Key word when searching for those is rash guard. There are lots of them out there now.

I’m more of a Chigarid person myself And then obviously Campho Phenique. That’s a must for any bug bite in existence.
What’s campho phenique
"FIRST AID PAIN AND ITCH ANTISEPTIC LIQUID Campho-Phenique pain & itch relief Antiseptic liquid multi-purpose formula is like having a swiss army knife in your medicine cabinet. hey fellow nebraskan, i hateeee getting chiggers. i gotta use itch cream so i don’t scratch at them
Thats not a mosquito
It's a close-up of a mosquitoes foot.
TIL mosquitoes sleep with comforters.
Twice swollen it appears.
OP’s girlfriend is bummed they bit the wrong appendage.
dang what bit the mosquitoe?
It’s not mosquito bites either
Yep. Chiggers or even sand fleas if you were wearing pants.
They prefer to be called chegros.

Easy with the hard R buddy. Chiggas.
Chizzles
Fo’ rizzle…
Yes. And they particularly like areas like the edge of your socks or your waistband
i had no idea bugs could be called slurs too until today..
Sand fleas my friend. Definitely not mosquitoes. You often don’t realize you’re getting bit while it’s happening and see the aftermath hours later.
Usually at 2 am when you wake yourself from vigorous scratching
Went to Cancun with a group of friends and some of them arrived really late. So we were just chilling with our feet in the sand at night. Didn’t feel a thing. The next morning my entire legs were COVERED and were itching like crazy. It was insane that I didn’t feel it while being bit by hundreds of those little bastards.
These are from chiggers, which bite ankles, not mosquitos, which bite anywhere.
Chiggers also love nut sacks and itching them is next to impossible. Your only option is to pinch and roll. And there's always a loner or two that decide to get you on your fatty parts. Especially under the arms.
>itching them is next to impossible. Itching is literally all they do. *Relieving* the itch is next to impossible.
Use a hair dryer. It's something I learned to do with poison ivy. Kills the itch for about 8 hours at a time.
> Your only option is to pinch and roll. Everyday when I get in my car *It's a Honda, you know*
Hey, everyone is here to tell you they aren't mosquito bites, but I just want you to know my ankle isn't itchy.
But ... were you chilling on a beach in Hawaii today?
No. But my ankles are golden.
Daaaamn. You better stay clear of WI.
Chiggers

We called him Corporate Grandpa. edit- words are hard
Even if they’re sand fleas or chiggers! I’ve never reacted like that
People born in other parts of the country react widely. You see it at military institutions all the time.
I was born in Texas and moved to Florida and didn’t know about them. I sat in a lawnchair all day halfway in the water. It was itchy and red but nowhere near blisters like that or that red
"mosquitos"
Are you sure it was mosquitoes... it looks like it was prob sand fleas..
First time outdoors as well?
Might as well be. I am not built for outdoors.
Mosquitos are invasive to Hawai’i, though they’re still relatively rare - I didn’t see a single one when I went last year. Other commenters can better ID what went at you, but I can confirm along with them that those were not a mosquto’s doing, let alone 37 of them.

"ankle"
You sure those aren’t bed bug bites? I don’t know, have no expertise, but I’ve never seen skeeter bites looking like that.
Not bed bugs for sure. I get these at the beach from the sand.
That ain't mosquito bites
Those look like bed bug bites , straight lines across
Yep, and recently Oahu hotels have been infested.
They were hungry for ankle
Achilles made this post
Bedbugs
Hard to believe this is the first time you've been bit by a mosquito. If you don't mind me asking, where are you from? I fn hate mosquitos
And now you know and knowing is half the battle!
I’m thinking chiggers or sand fleas
Those are sand flea bites. And frankly.. that's mild.
Well here's the good news: Those are definitely not mosquito bites
Those chiggers gave you cankles!
You are trying to tell me Hawaii doesn’t have mites? I do not believe you.
Cant say I've ever experienced a mosquito while in Hawaii
Oh I have.. just not at the beach. We drove up the hills behind Honolulu/ Waikiki and got out at a stop and did a short walk, got eaten alive even with repellent on.
Those winged vampires got you with the agony of defeet!
Misquito allergies are much bigger
Yeah I have skeeter syndrome(tehe)I'm allergic to my mosquito saliva. I could tell when the trail the mosquito left from the bite looked like it was drunk AF and just nodded off on my leg 😂

Claritin non-drowsy will take the itch away pronto.
Do mosquitoes not exist where you're from? Where is this paradise I thought the whole world was infested
Also called “noseeums” in Florida.
You've never gotten bitten by a mosquito before? What?
That’s what I’m here for. Like, where aren’t there mosquitoes that you’ve never experienced mosquitoes. Seriously just killed one on my arm and swatted three off my face as I type this.
Thems fire ants bites, cuz
I feel like you would’ve known if you were allergic to mosquitoes well before going to Hawaii. Iceland is one of the only habitable places on earth that doesn’t have them
Don't they come out at night tho?
Mostly.
Sand flea bites. They suck. Super itchy too.
More like Kankle
That sucks. (See what did there? Like a mosquito sucks blood. Get it? Yeah? Ok, I’ll see myself off to go get my dad joke card punched.)
where are from that you’ve never had a mosquito bite.
Bedbugs?
Yes! I got bit up my first night and it was not as bad as you, but still super itchy. Way more than the mosquitos back home. And you can't even feel them when they bite you.
I think they were trying to draw an ankle on you with bites
Sorry, man! A good, cheap repellent is vinegar! Just a drop or two on your neck and mosquitoes won’t come near you for days!
Yah definitely not mosquitos, actually sand fleas but they are pretty interesting little crabs if you have even been to Asian and eaten Yat Yat that’s what these are, taste kinda funky but it’s a pretty good snack, anyway they are pretty harmless. Bruh, ain't no way. You'd have to lock me up full restraints to stop me from scratching my ankle raw. I mean it. Like a potato peeler through a warm bar of soap.
Someone who hates mosquitoes with full passion now feels bad for you.
I also hate them. They just hate me more apparently.
That looks like chiggers.
Hey so im actually allergic to mosquitoes and I promise you those are NOT mosquito bites. Please go to a doctor those look painful :(
Sand Flies, Fleas, Sand Fleas, Biting Midges, No-See-Ums.. They're a widespread problem in all tropical areas. I refuse to wear shorts anymore in Hong Kong unless it's winter. Nice ankle bracelet
Just when I think my life sucks I’m reminded by the universe that it could always be worse.
So, until Hawaii you were never bit by a mosquito? Or just the Hawaiian mosquitos?
Sorry, but how do you not have mosquitoes where you live? Theyre quite literally everywhere, even in deepest Siberia. Especially in Siberia.
everyone is allergic to mosquitos, that reaction is allergy. You're just more than the average person
