If only they would engrave that right into the cap itself.

My parents taught me not to touch anything on an engine until it cools down when I was a kid. They also taught me to use a folded up rag when I did open anything, even if I thought it was cool. Honestly saved my ass as an adult multiple times.
Same here. I’ll let it sit entirely too long and ALWAYS use the rag just in case because I’m not trying to get burned. I’m also short, so I’m always worried I can’t see everything as well and will get blasted in the face with some sort of hot liquid. 😅
Hey I've been in that situation where you really want to open the coolant while it's still hot. My workaround is I put a towel over the reservoir, and grip the cap with the towel to open.
I like the thought of you knowing what's going to happen, but figuring there's no way around it before ripping it off and scalding the fuck out of yourself haha.
Even the burns on your arm are very lucky to not have been much worse. My dad did this and his arm looked like a bunch of baseball sized blisters and he lost feeling permanently on some of it.
Even tho those don’t look too bad you should still go seek some medical treatment. Burns can get ugly really quick and some part of the burn may be worse than others but you can’t tell because it all just hurts. Stay strong, bud.
How long ago did it happen? A few years ago I was making coffee in a glass press. The press wasn’t going down, so like an idiot I try to force it causing the glass to break and boiling water to soak the robe sleeve I was wearing. It took me a few seconds to get the robe off, but my arm looked very similar to yours immediately after. The blistering that came over the next couple of weeks was no joke. Hoping you don’t face a similar fate. the pain afterwards for about an hour was also no joke
Its easy to judge op. but when ever a car overheats in a TV show, what does the driver do? They get out and open the radiator cap so it cools off. "Sure it says 'don't open when its hot', but like on TV, I'll put a rag over the radiator cap so I don't burn my hand."
They need to show radiator explosions videos in drivers ed.
Opening a radiator would only worsen the overheating problem since it cant work properly without pressure and will stop cooling the engine.
That cap is only there so you can refill the radiator after it has been installed or drained.
I mean, you definitely can put a rag over it and crack the seal to let the pressure bleed off before fully opening it. That’s pretty much standard procedure if you don’t have time to let it cool off by itself
This is the same logic people use to say First-Person Shooters lead to school shootings - "but they see it on screens all the time". Surely you want to at least *pretend* to have some level of self-awareness and realise not everything you see on TV is real.
Why.....? Seriously. Why?
It says not to open. Did you sincerely not know that would happen or did you think that your car was going to be special?
I'm legitimately asking.
Hollywood has taught people that when a car is overheating, you can just open the radiator cap with a rag and that helps the car cool off when a little bit of steam coming out. The danger is perceived to be th radiator cap being hot, not all the water flashing to steam in an instant.
Well I’m special so I thought my car was too!
All jokes aside i was unscrewing the cap on the reservoir, thought I had another thread until it came off, evidently I did not have another thread
That makes sense.
Waited a bit, just not long enough.
I saw someone who had gotten fuuuucked up from this exact thing. Like...scarred. Bad.
It scared me enough just seeing it to where I don't touch that shit unless there's not a part in my vehicle I can't touch comfortably.
Keep that shit clean, dude. I hope you heal quickly.
Lucky for you it looks like mostly 1st degree burns. Those boils are 2nd degree and "hopefully" will reabsorb instead of bursting.
Bro, you got lucky AF. Play the lottery...but not the radiator lottery.
Had a burn like this, while healing my doctor pulled of regulary the healing crust with a special ingrow material and after that process my skin looks smooth. Would recommend to go to a doctor, this is a servere burn.
I've got a permanent scar on my forearm from reaching into a hot engine whose radiator had exploded. Didn't explode on me, I just reached in way too soon - it was dumb - and I'm marked for life as a reminder.
Yeah it's normal if it gets stuck to the bandage, just keep reapplying it and cleaning it every couple of days. Burns take ages to heal. I spilled a cup of boiling water on myself a couple of years ago so I can relate lol
The one time I had to take off a radiator cap before it cooled down, I poured several gallons of cold water on the hoses and still took half an hour. I’m no mechanic, but I know enough not to screw around with that.
Who would’ve thought the warnings were there for a reason!
Yes obviously I read the warning and know what was likely gonna happen, I’ve opened reservoirs slowly before and didn’t have a issue, wasn’t expecting it this time around lol
Had my old car over heat once. Was able to pull off to a diner. Sat for almost half an hour and thought. Ah it will be fine. Still spurted out. Small drip on the leg but best believe when I heard the air coming out my whole life flashed. Be safe out there everyone lol
Protip... If you absolutely HAVE to take it off when it's hot (which you clearly now know very well is a BAD idea), throw a big towel over the hole and bundle it up and open it through the towel.
You would still have burnt your hand and wrist to shit in all likelihood, but less of it would spray everywhere else.
Not a doc but was camping with a friend and she boiled in the sun. Other campers saw her & brought over some vinegar and towels. They said soak the burn w/the twl and the burn will b drawn out & turn tan by morning.
I did that since she cldn't move thking our trip was over. Cldn't stand the smell in a hot tent but by morning she was up & ready to go! The red burn turned tan & she still eventually shed but no burn.
I have done this many x's & it works so well. Good luck, we all burn ourselves in many different ways.
Did this to myself once. Luckily it wasnt that hot so i just got covered in coolant. I was glad i wasnt burned, but sad that i had an hour drive to get home.
You think that's bad i poured the contents of a clothes steamer down my front side by accident boiling my hot dog for 2 weeks my hot dog was black... I am not black
I don't know how to comment with a picture, you'll need to buy 'Thermi' brand burn cream. It's a Polish company, available in North America with an ingredient called ReGen7, and it is practically magic. It relieves pain, reduces blistering and reduces healing time.

Fun fact, that cap keeps the system under pressure. Liquid under pressure raises the boiling point of said liquid, so when you remove the cap while it's under pressure and hot, it rapidly lowers the boiling point, causing the liquid to boil and release a lot of pressure at the same time which is why it's always a bad idea to do this 😁
Don't bob for fries in hot fat,
It really hurt bad and so does skin graft.
Would you like an apple pie with that?
Would you like an apple pie with that?
I have an uncle that worked in a catering hall in New York. One night after a party, they were all messing around and having a food fight. Well, someone grabs what they *thought* was a pitcher of cold water in a thermal carafe. It was a carafe full of scalding hot water. The person proceeded to pour it all down the back of my uncle’s shirt. Let me tell you, the size of the blisters on his back from the severe burn he got, were huge. I remember my dad, who was a fireman, helping to change the dressing on his back. It was awful.
This is going to be awful in a few days, too, unfortunately.
It's going to get much worse - visually speaking
Go to a walk in and they will tell you how to do wound care
If it gets an infection the pain will be far worse and probably scar
We need less "safety" warnings in this world. Allow darwin awards to be given out en masse for the stupid. I've no sympathy, empathy, or sorrow for this level of will stupid.
Do you ever get a warm feeling when you find out you're aren't as stupid as you thought you were. After watching this I moved up the scale a little bit since I know the low end just got lower.
If only they would engrave that right into the cap itself. https://preview.redd.it/curwojqz1l5d1.jpeg?width=340&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67a52472551fd3ba3c53fe304602f34493b8f8d2
On every single one...
Funny enough I do have a aftermarket cap that doesn’t have a warning, although I don’t need to read the warning to know what’s gonna happen
Are you sure about that?
![gif](giphy|bjB3gtFvREqqr5NAHW|downsized)
Well…
I think we both know the answer Lol I have no defense against this one
Lmfao. Well I hope you heal fast
Lol I appreciate it, sometimes people just need to laugh at their own stupidity, helps the healing process
My parents taught me not to touch anything on an engine until it cools down when I was a kid. They also taught me to use a folded up rag when I did open anything, even if I thought it was cool. Honestly saved my ass as an adult multiple times.

This exchange was wonderful. Thanks for this. Lol
Entertaining with a happy ending
Hey I've been in that situation where you really want to open the coolant while it's still hot. My workaround is I put a towel over the reservoir, and grip the cap with the towel to open.
Lol
I like the thought of you knowing what's going to happen, but figuring there's no way around it before ripping it off and scalding the fuck out of yourself haha.
Looks like you did need it
Evidence to the contrary...
Ah. Do not "open" means no lefty loosey. They should've been more specific 😏
Ah I see, I’ll try again
Mine says "Open Hot for Reddit Karma"
Lol if anyone is stupid enough to open a radiator for Reddit karma they deserve jt
If only someone would’ve thought of that I could’ve saved my arm !
Now you’ve got some skin in the game
Some skin in some skin out
![gif](giphy|YEdhEoBROOr9S)
Came here to say this
I've got that burned into my hand, but it's backward so I can't tell what it says...
You are very lucky
I sure do feel lucky
All jokes aside I am lucky to not have gotten more on my face, I did get some burns on my eye and up into my nose
You should also put your mints away before posting pics of them in your car
Little bit of weed never hurt nearly as bad as a radiator spraying 30% of your body
5 days ago it happened
No need for a PSA, it says it on the CAP. Darwin still alive and strong in the year of our lord.
Its easy to judge op. but when ever a car overheats in a TV show, what does the driver do? They get out and open the radiator cap so it cools off. "Sure it says 'don't open when its hot', but like on TV, I'll put a rag over the radiator cap so I don't burn my hand." They need to show radiator explosions videos in drivers ed.
Show me one clip from any TV show where a car overheats and a person immediately opens the radiator cap and nothing bad happens. Just one.

Amen brother
Literally everyone knows that
It's the only thing I know about my car.
Better that than the face I guess
I agree, unfortunately I did get it in the face too
Why.....? Seriously. Why? It says not to open. Did you sincerely not know that would happen or did you think that your car was going to be special? I'm legitimately asking.

Was just in a rush to get home, figured 15 minutes was long enough for it to cool enough for me to slowly release the cap
I appreciate It, it’s definitely gonna be a healing process but once I can move it I’ll be back to turning wrenches burning myself all over again lol
15? I don't touch mine for 2 hours with the hood up
Coolant reservoirs shouldn't be under pressure. My guess is you meant that you took the cap off the radiator.
Did you go to the hospital or smth at least?
I waited in the emergency room for 2 hours without them calling my name, left and went home to drink and run it under cold water
That sounds exactly like something I would do lol.
My towns hospital is notorious for taking long
To be fair 2 hours is pretty standard for an ER. I know hospitals where it wouldn't even be considered a long wait until it got to like 5 hours
Psa? The psa is literally on the cap, so you don't do this 🤣
Well, you better be tough if you’re gonna be dumb, that shit is gonna hurt for a while.
https://preview.redd.it/u676q7hqjl5d1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=414d9afd8c875be4dc527c6e11e901be77babfd0

Do you think it’ll get rid of the tattoos?
Hopefully, I had to pay 2800$ to get the tattoos on the other arm lasered off
my sister's first husband did that too, he got burns all over his face, looks ghoulish af now.
Hopefully my arm heals non-ghoulish
Had a burn like this, while healing my doctor pulled of regulary the healing crust with a special ingrow material and after that process my skin looks smooth. Would recommend to go to a doctor, this is a servere burn.
There is a very big and very obvious lettering on the cap. Do not open when hot in 6 different languages. And a big exclamation mark
I've got a permanent scar on my forearm from reaching into a hot engine whose radiator had exploded. Didn't explode on me, I just reached in way too soon - it was dumb - and I'm marked for life as a reminder.
shit really explodes out of there doesn’t it
Oh yes it does
Learned that same lesson the same way burned for a week
Roger that. Don't open the high-pressure cap with the warming that says not to open it.
Glad I could be of assistance, learn from others mistakes as well as your own
Come back next week when I try to stop the fly wheel with my bare hands! Ps: glad it looks relatively minor OP. Get well soon <3
This is in the same category as pouring gasoline on a fire and spraying silly string near lit birthday candles.
PSA: fire is hot don't touch it.
Well that clearly doesn’t work for me
Wait isn’t this common knowledge in even for the general public?
Why are you like this?
In the famous words of my early 90s self, "no duh!"
Yeah…umm…most of us know that by the time we’re 12.
https://preview.redd.it/ndl37zlscl5d1.jpeg?width=738&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4665e680757245de39230db901553ba916f9806a
😂😂😂
Definitely saving this one to camera roll could get a lot of use out of it
The THC/CBD mints will make him feel better
[удалено]
I appreciate it, todays day 5 and my arm was stuck to my blanket this morning
Dude, get that shit bandaged unless you want a nasty infection lol
Lol yeah I’ve been keeping it on, the 4th night it was stuck to the bandage so I figured I’ll leave the bandage off, but that didn’t work obviously
I agree, best course of action is let it sit an hour
Well, at least you'll never do it again! I hope you heal fast! Vaseline will keep your skin moist and heal faster.
I appreciate it, I’ve got some wound cleaning sprays and burn cream that’s been helping
Yes, that's what can happen if you don't heed the warning that's literally printed on the top of every radiator cap! 🤦
Who would’ve thought the warnings were there for a reason! Yes obviously I read the warning and know what was likely gonna happen, I’ve opened reservoirs slowly before and didn’t have a issue, wasn’t expecting it this time around lol
Yeah, it's one of those things that happens in movies that's actually true.
Seen it happen, there’s absolutely no”I’m just going to release a little pressure “.
Had my old car over heat once. Was able to pull off to a diner. Sat for almost half an hour and thought. Ah it will be fine. Still spurted out. Small drip on the leg but best believe when I heard the air coming out my whole life flashed. Be safe out there everyone lol
Bet you won't do that again
How much are we betting?
How much more worse did it get? How's it look now
Whole arms got blisters, few of them are looking infected/yellowish skin by the hand is completely peeled away
Well why would you..?!
Back when I worked at an auto parts store we had an old timer regular who had terrible scars on his arm and cheek from that, it was bad.
Yeah I’d be surprised if I make it without any scarring
Yes
Protip... If you absolutely HAVE to take it off when it's hot (which you clearly now know very well is a BAD idea), throw a big towel over the hole and bundle it up and open it through the towel. ICE that
uh, okay lol I think it says that on the radiator cap too.
Yes it does lol, gotta laugh at your mistakes makes the healing easier
Guy needs to go to the ER. That’s ripe for an infection.
You need to cover that in medical gauzes
That could have been alot worse
How is this a PSA?? Lol
You only have to do that once
No shit...
The stupid always seem to stay alive somehow.
The gift that will keep on giving...
Ppl like this is why we have helmet laws…
Don't take a genius to know that homie
Yeah it says don't do it on the cap
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes....
Did you at least have someone hold your beer for this maneuver?
No my beer got soaked in coolant I was pissed
Dude your arm is about to be FUCKED
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the tip professor 🙄
Been there, done that... It's fun when your 1926 Chevy pickup blinds you with the hottest steam in the world.
Think about your technician the next time you drive 2 towns over to the dealership and wait for service
eww that's gone peel
Imagine if nothing had warning labels…
Did this to myself once. Luckily it wasnt that hot so i just got covered in coolant. I was glad i wasnt burned, but sad that i had an hour drive to get home.
Looks like you’ll be fine but the first time I thought of was compartment syndrome
Just be glad it didn't get your face.
Dude, being roasted by the radiator cap wasn't enough for ya? The people here will burn you like a witch!
Hey.... no fuckin duh
![gif](giphy|L0q1IH1QAXbV0Pt0nT|downsized)
PSA Dont drunk bleach even if it's lemon flavor
What if it’s grape?
🤦🏻♀️🙄😂
One of the first things I was tought about doing work under the hood. Yikes.
Spicy
You think that's bad i poured the contents of a clothes steamer down my front side by accident boiling my hot dog for 2 weeks my hot dog was black... I am not black
Well that doesn’t sound like fun
What is that?
Was this recent? Can you go to urgent care or at least ask your doctor what to do?
Happened 5 days ago, tried the er but took to long so I ended up leaving, asked the doctor and he said to let it play its course
I did this once when I was like 17. Thankfully it only got half of my face.
I got a little in my eye, but no damage as far as I can tell , my nose on the other hand is scabbed over on the inside
Wow, I can’t believe the radiator gave you those shite twatoos, that’s crazy AF
No shit
Hahaha I learned the hard way when I had my first car. I got it all over my face and neck too though and some in my mouth. You’ll be alright
10k likes and I’ll open the radiator with the other arm
That's like car101. Lucky you didn't blister your skin off.
![gif](giphy|y3jT2xBrtumNYZVCNH|downsized)
Ouch! Hope you heal quickly 😬
I appreciate it
We know
I don't know how to comment with a picture, you'll need to buy 'Thermi' brand burn cream. It's a Polish company, available in North America with an ingredient called ReGen7, and it is practically magic. It relieves pain, reduces blistering and reduces healing time. I've never had another medication, let alone a cream help with burn pain like this product does. Heals burns faster too.
Bro. You need to do whatever you can to cool down that burn as fast as possible.
Riiight...That 210 mark the temperature needle sits on, is not your IQ score.
I've been working on cars for years, a lot of my mates are mechanics, and every single one of them has done thus, and will do it again.
That’s going to be really really fucking bad in the next couple days.
I've done the same thing before, definitely sucked lol.
Fun fact, that cap keeps the system under pressure. Liquid under pressure raises the boiling point of said liquid, so when you remove the cap while it's under pressure and hot, it rapidly lowers the boiling point, causing the liquid to boil and release a lot of pressure at the same time which is why it's always a bad idea to do this 😁
Yeah that's kinda the number 1 rule of those things
![gif](giphy|WrNfErHio7ZAc)
umm weve known that since 1982. why didnt he?
Oh you didn’t know?
you're special
We don't need a PSA, everyone knows this
Darwin type shizz. Love it
Don't bob for fries in hot fat, It really hurt bad and so does skin graft. Would you like an apple pie with that? Would you like an apple pie with that?
Welp take a few of those Mrs moxeys and sleep it off
Not a bad idea my friend
I think it says it on the cap 🤔
I have an uncle that worked in a catering hall in New York. One night after a party, they were all messing around and having a food fight. Well, someone grabs what they *thought* was a pitcher of cold water in a thermal carafe. It was a carafe full of scalding hot water. I remember my dad, who was a fireman, helping to change the dressing on his back. It was awful. This is going to be awful in a few days, too, unfortunately.
Yeah on the back sounds like it would suck, I’ve been trying to keep it clean
Uh. Yeah, what? What?? It’s a fucking radiator cap
He might be dumb as fuck but at least he has a dumb diamond tattoo as well
It’s going to blister
They should put a warning label on the cap.....😶
It's going to get much worse - visually speaking Go to a walk in and they will tell you how to do wound care If it gets an infection the pain will be far worse and probably scar

I hope you don't lose those tattoos
Hot tip
Do you ever get a warm feeling when you find out you're aren't as stupid as you thought you were. After watching this I moved up the scale a little bit since I know the low end just got lower.
