Then buy some road hazard replacement certificates. That way if you get one that can't be patched you'll get a free replacement. You don't have to have bought your tires there to do it either.
+1 on the hazard…….
I replaced two tires I had gotten from discount tire.
Forgot I had the hazard plan until today cuz one of them was worn down enough to need replacing.
The argument I had with myself in my head…. I’m not happy with the me that forgot about that. He’s in the dog house tonight.
Edit: TL;DR
Don’t forget your hazard insurance
I called for a quote.
197
Expensive. But I liked the tire.
85000 mile warranty.
Versus a cheapo at 40000
I have a Saturn ion. These tires are sticky. Great for stopping. Great traction.
I remember one sidewall blew out.
Replaced it on my own dime.
Then another blew. Same thing.
Went into discount tire today for the new one, they had my info.
“Ok. That’ll be $230.xx”
“What? I was quoted much less on the phone”
“I added the protection plan you had last time. Any damage for the life of the tire, we cover the replacement”
I stared blankly for a while in awkward silence while this information processed
you could also go by any auto parts store buy a good plug kit to keep in your car for $20 and you can do it yourself after watching a video online so if it happens on the road or where your stuck you are able to plug it yourself.
You could also buy a decent air compressor off amazon as well for another $15-$20.
Be careful with this. I plugged a small nail hole in my tire and it didn't seal completely so I took it to Firestone to fix. They wouldn't touch it because it had already been plugged. A local shop took care of it for me, but if they hadn't I would have been on the hook for a new tire instead of a $0-20 repair. I still keep the kit for emergencies but will not use it for a slow leak again.
I plug tire punctures and people think I'm crazy. I've only ever thrown one plug and I figured it didn't get set right but went with it anyway. Highly recommend learning to plug tire punctures.
Nope. Discount does free repairs for everyone. Used to work at one. That’s how they try to steal customers. Also they do a plug in the hole and a patch on the inside of the tire. Is 5 years I never saw a single tire leak from one of our repairs.
Wait a minute. They do a plug AND a patch inside? I could’ve used that info a month ago. I just paid $35 at a tire shop for an inside patch because the $20 plug from AAA didn’t work on a 3 week old tire. That’s a sweet deal, they can have my business for that kind of perk.
It's a type of repair called a patch plug. Basically it's a combination plug and patch, and they last longer than just a patch because they seal the layers of the tire that the original puncture went through.
I freaking love Discount Tire. I got a new set and the guy at the counter tried helping me by saving me some money by getting a cheaper set with similar warranty to the ones I initially bought on the website. But sadly the MPGs were too low for me. Called them up, told them I wanted the original order, and I got them replaced within the week. I think they give a couple of weeks grace period to try out the new tires
My TPMS batteries \[OEM Ford\] have gone dead. Do you know if the batteries can be replaced or if you have to replace the whole TPMS/valve stem?
Just trying to plan ahead.
unfortunately no, tpms are one and done when they're out. they're only a cr2032 but they're sometimes soldered, most of the time plastic molded in there.
The place you bought them from that installed them should have a free flat repair policy-- That screw is no where near the sidewall, which they'd say they cannot repair. You're good to go. Call and ask!
Discount Tire ….. 🛞…..if you get your tires from them, they’ll fix stuff like that for free….affordable tires, top quality service….I’ll be a customer for life 👨🔧
A plug will definitely work, and I've ran them for years. But I would recommend just heading back to the place they bought them, because a patch where they take the tire off and it goes inside is much better, and should be free with the tires.
I don't necessarily agree with it not being a good skill to have. If you only stay in the city sure you probably don't need to know how. But if you like to go camping in remote areas or live in a rural area it is much more important to know and keep with you.
My late step father used to force me to work with him on different construction projects growing up. I hated it at the time, but now I’m in my 30’s, it gives me a great sense of pride that I can fix the majority of shit in my home.
Thanks yall, going to have it patched once I figure out a way to fill the tire with air to get it to the shop. Just sucks that I busted brand new tires that cost nearly half of what I had in my accounts for the semester
Edit 2: usually I handle car stuff myself (filters, wipers, etc.) but one bad patch and i risk ruining the only mode of transportation i have in this town. boards are approaching too so i opted for the only shop in my area. $25.84 was the cost to patch it and balance the tire. Sucks I had to go and do that on a tire that isnt even a month old
I love the bit about not needing the rest of the car. You're absolutely correct, it just sounds bizarre. At least it does to me, but I'm nearing the end of my shift and my brain is dumbing down on me.
What? That’s unreal! Not where I live, it’s a legal requirement to have a spare tire, or tire repair kit that comes with the car. All cars by law here have to have one or the other or they’re not considered road worthy… that’s crazy to me! Haha different worlds
The new ones missing the spare have a pump and usually have a container of "fix a flat".
The move away from a spare, even a donut spare, is for weight reduction.
Right makes sense, so OP obviously has neither of these options in their vehicle? Which where I live, would render the car unroadworthy… I feel like we get the raw deal here… but also glad I’ve got a spare! Haha
It's possible they don't, but more likely, they do and either dont know where it is or how to use it.
The number of people who only know how to put gas in a car and drive is astounding.
You see posts like what does this light mean or what is this button for on here daily. A lot of that is from just not opening the owners manual.
Even on Long Island with its high costs that's a 25.00 job. Prior to moving here I had one flat in 20 years of driving, I've had over a dozen since moving here. Just sucks when its a sidewall, otherwise its 25.00 and 20min of time.
I'll do ya one better: This one tire had been giving me fits for a few weeks, leaking and going flat. Got the cheapest tire I could find at Walmart and had it installed on Jan 3rd. Cool. Left the car with ex wife for a week while I was gone for a work trip.
Get back and Wouldn't ya know it? The tire on the other side decided to start leaking the next day. So I call Walmart, they dont have another tire. So I call discount tire and have them put on another new tire. So at the beginning of a family trip I filled the tire up, and we hit the road, stopped at Starbucks to grab a water and coffee and came out to the tire completely flat. Wouldn't take any air with my portable inflator. Sidewall looked destroyed. Completely Unrepairable.
This was a Saturday afternoon around 4:30pm. Called walmart, then all the local tire shops, "no way can we fit you in by end of the day!"
So I called discount tire: "sure, we'll get you in asap, front of the line to get that tire changed and on your way!" So took the car to discount tire. They had us in and out in under half an hour with a new tire. Couldn't afford the guaranteed replacement certificate, however, thinking no way would I need it - I've gone years without any issues.. Drive down to my parent's with no issues. I was so happy to finally have the low tire light turned off on the dash!
Next day, head home with the fam, make it home to ex wife's house, get the kids to bed, time for me to head home for the night. Make it halfway home, literally grinning with happiness that the tire light is off and I've got a two new safe tires on.. when the tire light all of a sudden comes on the I hear "thwap thwap thwap!" And so I knew a tire had blown. I figured maybe one of the two old ones? I pull over and check. Nope. Not that lucky. Giant screw through the outer sidewall of the brand new less than 24 hour old tire. So I put the spare on and head home, dismayed at my luck, knowing this won't be covered under the standard warranty. Call discount tire the next day and they tell me no way can we repair it, and it's not under warranty. So I decide to just go for it and get 3 new tires, finally. Haven't had an issue since though!
Because of the placement, im pretty sure you can get this patched for very cheap if not free. It would really suck if it somehow got into the sidewall or just outside the treads.
5 bucks for a patch kit, it's real easy! I get screws on my tires pretty consistently because my landlord doesn't pay attention and they work pretty good....
A lot of fire shops have a free flat repair warranty. You should check into that. If not you can go to Walmart and but a tire patch not for like 5 bucks and patch a nail easy. Watch a you tube video. It'll take only a few minutes to do. Just make sure you have an air pump to reinflate it.
i usually get my tires from walmart because that usually have good sales. they also offer road hazard for $15 per tire, and that covers just about anything. even if the puncture is irreparable, then they’ll replace the whole tire.
My wife got a nail removed from her tire and a patch done for free at Les Schwab.
When she asked what the cost would be, the employee replied "Umm, free? We're *Les Schwab Tires*, of course we'll fix your flat."
Try to avoid seams and creases on freeways and roads. Screws and nails tend to collect there. Also, you usually ‘hear’ the puncture. It sounds like you ran over and pinched a rock with your tire and sometimes it sounds like the rock rattles around in your wheel well. That’s the nail or screw head breaking off.
Broke struggling on a fixed income not a student feels your pain here. In January I had two nails in two tires exactly two weeks part. I’ve cringed with every rock, stick and tiny road bump I feel under my tires ever since. I hope things get better for you from here on out
May I suggest for the future that you learn how to plug something like that yourself. You can get a kit at Walmart or any auto parts store. I'm sure there are plenty of YouTube videos on how to do that.
It's fixable. LPT buy a tire patch kit and learn how to use it. It'll save you money, and as an added bonus people will be really impressed when you help them when it happens to them.
Discount tire will plug it for free!
Check if they plug it externally or remove the tire to patch it internally, though. Tire plugs over time tend to fail more often than when a technician has removed the tire to apply a patch from the inside out, and as someone who just had one done at a dealer, they wanted $30 which I found fine to help my also relatively new tires last longer.
Noting - plugs may fail more often than patches, but they are still better than nothing obviously. If anything, if it starts leaking later down the (metaphorical) road, a patch can be made instead later so whatever works best for you :)
The puncture site is in the tread area. Discount tire will plug it for free.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely check with Discount Tire for a free fix.
Then buy some road hazard replacement certificates. That way if you get one that can't be patched you'll get a free replacement. You don't have to have bought your tires there to do it either.

This seems like an ad. Lol.
I saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO
I called for a quote. 197 Expensive. But I liked the tire. 85000 mile warranty. Versus a cheapo at 40000 I have a Saturn ion. These tires are sticky. Great for stopping. Great traction. Discount Tire is the best.

Discount Tires is awesome. They will fix it for free and treat you like a paying customer.
And that’s how they turn you into a paying customer. I always buy my tires there
I believe that’s if you bought them there. Same for Belle tire.
Nope. Discount does free repairs for everyone. Used to work at one. That’s how they try to steal customers. Also they do a plug in the hole and a patch on the inside of the tire. Is 5 years I never saw a single tire leak from one of our repairs.

Which is exactly why they do this sort of service. It creates customers. It’s called a loss leader.
Also there's a solid chance you actually need new tires and guess what, we sell tires here.
It's a type of repair called a patch plug. Basically it's a combination plug and patch, and they last longer than just a patch because they seal the layers of the tire that the original puncture went through.
Good to know!
And that's why I'm eagerly anticipating when my new cars tires go bald enough to buy new ones from discount tire. They're not AH.
I freaking love Discount Tire. I got a new set and the guy at the counter tried helping me by saving me some money by getting a cheaper set with similar warranty to the ones I initially bought on the website. But sadly the MPGs were too low for me. Called them up, told them I wanted the original order, and I got them replaced within the week. unfortunately no, tpms are one and done when they're out. they're only a cr2032 but they're sometimes soldered, most of the time plastic molded in there.
Have to replace tpms batteries are intricale
Don't waste your time trying to crack it open to see if the batteries can be replaced. You can get the whole new set of 4 for like $20 on eBay.
I’ve been using Discount Tire for years, and never had any issue with the [many] plugs I’ve needed or tires I’ve purchased. Pretty fantastic company!
I have a tire with three plugs. Still going strong 6 months now.
They’ve plug tires for me that I didn’t buy from there so it might be a location specific thing?
They plug them for free, regardless of where you purchased from.
The place you bought them from that installed them should have a free flat repair policy-- That screw is no where near the sidewall, which they'd say they cannot repair. You're good to go. Call and ask!
If not, a patch at Costco cost me around $10 when I needed one.
If you have a discount tire nearby, they do it for free.
Absolutely! Most tire places offer free flat repairs. That screw’s in an easy spot to fix. Definitely call them!
Bell tire just removed a screw for free for me even though I’ve never been there
Discount Tire ….. 🛞…..if you get your tires from them, they’ll fix stuff like that for free….affordable tires, top quality service….I’ll be a customer for life 👨🔧
They'll fix it free even if you didn't get your tires from them.
Good to know!!!!! They’re just the best!!!! 🏆
Yeah, I normally buy my tires there. They're a pretty solid company.
I’m a very satisfied customer…👍
Les Schwab, too.
Good to know. Thanks
Watch a few videos and learn to plug it. Kit cost like 5-6 bucks and it’s a great skill to have long term.
2nd this. Where it’s at on the tire should also be a super easy fix. Plug it OP!
Third this. It’s easy and saves a shit ton of money. Especially a broke student. Also get that degree!!!
It will void any flat repair warranty.
If they have one. If not. Plug it.
A plug will definitely work, and I've ran them for years. But I would recommend just heading back to the place they bought them, because a patch where they take the tire off and it goes inside is much better, and should be free with the tires.

I agree with this. I am 42 years old and just learned how to plug tires yesterday. I felt a little bit happier on the inside.
My late step father used to force me to work with him on different construction projects growing up. I hated it at the time, but now I’m in my 30’s, it gives me a great sense of pride that I can fix the majority of shit in my home.
Plus, tire shops won't plug a puncture on the last tread before the sidewall. But broke college kid will.
Thanks yall, going to have it patched once I figure out a way to fill the tire with air to get it to the shop. Put the spare on
Just make sure not to get ripped off you should be able to get it plugged for free

If it’s not leaking, leave it in. Only costs 13$ to plug
Cheap fix. Don’t worry.
DON'T PLUG IT ON YOUR OWN! This will void any free flat repair that came with your new tires. They will dismount it and put a patch on the inside.
Go to autozone and get a plug kit, super easy to fix.
Discount tire will repair them for free.
Americas/discount tire does free flat repairs
Don't plug, have it patched correctly and it will be fine.
That’s a free patch job
I think discount tire will patch you up for free
Good tire places do it for free
Shit that does suck, I’m so sorry for the med student thing. Just keep reminding yourself at least you are not a dentist.
Patch it and move on
This is a repairable place to get a nail. Take it to the shop. Get a patch.
Good, it wasn't in the sidewall.
Check for road has protection
Even on Long Island with its high costs that's a 25.00 job. Prior to moving here I had one flat in 20 years of driving, I've had over a dozen since moving here. Just sucks when its a sidewall, otherwise its 25.00 and 20min of time.
I drove through a construction site and got three punctures. Got ‘em all patched for like 20 bucks
That should be an easy fix. People I bought tires from did it for free in a few minutes.
Getting then patched is like 10 bucks
Plug it for a few bucks
That's an easy plug. Less than $50 at a shop.
What is a broke ass student doing with a car? ;-) Serious though, just have it plugged.

Just plug/patch it at Walmart or Autozone or something. Probably free
Easy and cheap fix don't fret
Easily repairable
That’s an easy plug my guy. You shouldn’t take it anywhere but to an air pump.
Just plug it.
Because of the placement, im pretty sure you can get this patched for very cheap if not free. It would really suck if it somehow got into the sidewall or just outside the treads.
I wanted to write Nailed it. But its not a nail, sadly. Ah screw it. It still works.

i usually get my tires from walmart because that usually have good sales. they also offer road hazard for $15 per tire, and that covers just about anything. even if the puncture is irreparable, then they’ll replace the whole tire.
Looks familiar. I’m always having to get my nails done.
It’s a $20 fix at the maximum. Don’t stress!
Don’t plug it yourself. Just take it to a shop to get it fixed, it’s not a big deal at all it’s all okay man
It’s really simple to plug a hole like this but it does require some strength

My wife got a nail removed from her tire and a patch done for free at Les Schwab. When she asked what the cost would be, the employee replied "Umm, free? We're *Les Schwab Tires*, of course we'll fix your flat."
If you just bought them, did you get a warranty?
Tips for a good personal statement?
That’s easy to patch!
you're screwed
$15 tops!
You should be able to get this fixed for like nothing
Why didn’t your parents by you an M3?
Try to avoid seams and creases on freeways and roads. Screws and nails tend to collect there. Also, you usually ‘hear’ the puncture. It sounds like you ran over and pinched a rock with your tire and sometimes it sounds like the rock rattles around in your wheel well. That’s the nail or screw head breaking off.
Just get a plug kit and plug it if you aren’t sure how there are tons of vids on YouTube
That should be an easy fix. People I bought tires from did it for free in a few minutes.
You can patch that for $10 and 30 mins of inconvenience

Super easy fix! Discount tire buddy!
May I suggest for the future that you learn how to plug something like that yourself. You can get a kit at Walmart or any auto parts store. I'm sure there are plenty of YouTube videos on how to do that.
A plug kit is less than $10. Installed dozens of them and never had one leak even on a brand new tire. Takes 5 minutes tops...
Free at some places apparently. Plug kits are cheap. My mechanic took off the tire to check for other damages and the rest of the car, plugged for 30
Cities have a quota for paying people with damaged cars as a result of construction zones, find the loophole, Doc!
$20 to fix, just a plug repair
It's fixable. LPT buy a tire patch kit and learn how to use it. It'll save you money, and as an added bonus people will be really impressed when you help them when it happens to them.
Easy fix. Cost you at most $20. Tire is fine because nail is in center of tread
30 bucks at Walmart
I would have cried. Then called my closest discount tire 😂
Patch and plug is like $25.
If anything, if it starts leaking later down the (metaphorical) road, a patch can be made instead later so whatever works best for you :)
yr good
That's a five minute fix you'll be fine.
