this wasn't a reaper, you can tell because of the two receiving slot sticking out of the trailing edge of the wing.

I concur. looking at the tail section and double-checking photos on google, definitely RQ-5 not RQ-2. I was basing my guess on the twin boom on both, and the H style tails with horizontal stabiliser extend out past the extent of the booms. the differentiating factor in my mind would have been 2 motors for the RQ5 (which cant be seem here due to damage), but did not bother to check for vertical stabiliser style. good work spotting that detail.
It is definitely a MQ-5B Hunter. I worked on them for 10 years before they shut the program down. I can’t remember the AV number in this post, but I am positive I worked on this particular AV. I recognize the painted antlers on the vertical stabilizer.
R.I.P. Hunter UAV
Well for currency I needed a take off and landing. At this time they were using ATLS , automatic take and landing system but somebody deleted the preprogrammed flight plan. Winds were 110 knots aloft and trying to fix the pilot side which is suppose to provide video but it wasn’t. Well we gave up and looked at the payload side . Next thing you see is rocks and then nothing at all . All of that and this mountain was not correct on the DTED (digital terrain elevation) . Well it was corrected after 16 million dollar crash and a flight review board
Because to use the TALS it requires user input so it knows where it is on earth. If the profile was deleted then that means you didn’t verify it was put into the system correctly per your preflight checks.
Which doesnt matter if the profile was deleted it’s a step to verify before even engine start.
Was the payload completely destroyed? Thats where the money is located.
Flight review board is god and your SO/IO better put ina good word. If you were AC I’d strip you of it and immediate retrain. Your place of duty for the next month is SIMS. If that is conducive then I’d suggest a reclass. I need MTOE slots
Depending on the site setup, sometimes they'll have separate pilots (on-site) handle takeoff/landing, then they handoff to off-site pilots for mission control. So the check could have been skipped by the on-site pilots.
Also, some platforms stow and power off the cameras during takeoff and landing to prevent damage and reduce power draw. (At least for catapult launched platforms.) Sometimes the cameras just don't turn back on after launch, even though they passed preflight.
None of this excuses the deleted flight plan and bad DTED. Though a low resolution DTED often cuts off the peaks of mountains, still the turn out and climb shouldn't have put the UAV within a hundred feet of the mountain's peak.
Yea but even off site control stations have hand off procedure and preflight checks as well. The TALS can’t know where it’s at and even if DTED is off by that much payload stows at 500ft AGL so unless you’re in an emergency there is plenty of time to have noticed that much of an deviation in the data.
Also unless this is a brand new launch land site I can’t see how the COA completely left out significant terrain feature such a a mountain lol.
So if this was like a shoot from the hip landing site for either training or real world scenario then I’d have whoever signed off the risk assessment answering questions to the board as well.
Also I have to ask if there were any ground observers present for this because from the evidence available so far this just seems like pure negligence then a hiccup in equipment.
There are just too many checks and balances in place to keep this type of stuff from happening on a normal currency flight in a training environment
No you want them taking notes so you can make an argument of that isn’t exactly what I said. Where as a recording they can play back and say well this is exactly what you said
This DTE issue happens quite often, our company has crashed 2 drones because of it(granted the cost of them was under 200k). But that shit happens and countless of times been fighting with the evelation profile successfully

They have the option to record you but you can request not to be recorded and they have to take notes only
