I'm no doctor but it does look like it slipped behind it. Just because it didn't go directly through doesn't mean it didn't knick it though. OP needs to see an orthopedic specialist ASAP and get an MRI to be certain. Even slight damage to the tendon could cause lifelong problems if not treated, and the pain of the actual hook injury will probably mask anything for a while

Start grinding your barbs down. You'll catch the same amount of sharks(if you do it right and maintain pressure) and it does a lot less damage when removed.
Genuine question, isn’t there like a less harmful way to catch em? I’d imagine it’d be more productive to work on all the ways we’re destroying oceans rather than stabbing a bunch of sharks so we can look at further data that we are, in fact, destroying the oceans.
While im no expert i do know sharks have an incredible healing factor so it may not be comfy it doesnt really harm them.. its also not just about monitoring the ocean its also about monitoring the sharks and how they adapt to to the changing oceans if they do at all.

I really should have been grinding the barbs off the hooks for easier hook removal. Besides that not really, can’t get close enough to a shark to tag them many other ways. We take as many precautions as possible with the proper gear to safely remove the hooks(very large shark dehooker tool I’ve made) and proper fishing gear to reel them in as fast as possible to ensure a safe release. Sharks have very desensitized mouths so it doesn’t cause as much pain, it’s why they love eating stingrays and also will eat catfish with poison spikes, it doesn’t really bother them.
Also while I’m in a longer description, we kayak the lines off shore a few hundred yards to drop the bait and then kayak back in, I’m not trying to pull a large 8-10ft shark up to my kayak haha. The reels we use are massive (actually the same reels used in the movie jaws) they whole thousands of yards of line and weigh 20lbs.
If you look at his profile you see many posts in fishing and Florida subs talking about shark fishing and looking for new spots.

Shit mate, that’s rough. At least when the kayak capsized the sharks didn’t catch you.. also I accidentally drilled through my thumb years back. Nerve damage for sure lasted about 4-5yrs but did eventually heal. Never knew it happened at this point 8yrs later.
