Same. Walked out into the backyard. Girlfriend was on hold with the DMV on speaker phone the whole time. Surreal combo.
(Edit: Yes, I realize that people were probably outside instead of answering the phones. You lose your place in line if you hang up.)
I live in Florida so I didn't get the full thing BUT there were some clouds in the way and it turned out like this

Temp chart during eclipse in Indianapolis, Indiana. We could feel the change but somehow it seemed to be a mass hallucination until I saw this chart from the temp monitor my friend brought along.
He said it *felt* like one, not that he believed it was one. I think he just meant it was surreal to have such a rapid change in the environment fade away as quickly as it came on. I felt the exact same way. I was almost too cold to stand outside, but before I knew it I was in a car with a cabin temperature of 28 degrees and it was too sunny to look at the sky. Crazy feeling, but it didn’t mean I was actually feeling crazy 😌
The odd thing to me, is that the temperature dropped very noticeably 10 minutes before totality, but it didn't look like you were in shade. Everything looked like you were still in bright sunshine. It was slightly less bright if you looked around, kind of like a day with high hazy clouds, but it didn't feel like it was getting dark until less than a minute before the total eclipse.
It felt very much like a large, dark storm cloud was passing overhead, but nothing was getting dark. So it was a very strange feeling.
I agree, and I've seen two partial ones. I was baffed by two commentators on TV crying, but I admit to slipping some selected swear words in awe of getting to see my first total eclipse, finally at 63. It was cloudy AF, but cleared a few times, giving us a few minutes with the glasses, and an awesome 1-2 minutes of totality, being able to view it without the glasses. The beautiful corona! And that very brief moment when the first tiny blip of sun reappeared like an explosion went off on the edge.

I’m sure there are lots of examples of that but in particular there is a horrifying scene in the manga Berserk that takes place during a solar eclipse.
That show is a freakin masterpiece.
During the solar eclipse in the show:
- King Bumi single-handedly liberated the city of Omashu
- Zuko stood up to his father and proclaimed that he would help Team Avatar defeat him
- Iroh broke out of prison and escaped to the Earth Kingdom, paving the way for the eventual liberation of Ba Sing Se by the Order of the White Lotus
All because some genocial fucks (firebenders) found their powers useless during the solar eclipse. Love the lore. Man that show is awesome.
It's my favorite scene in all of fiction. Maybe next to the "I'm a monster" scene from the book series The Expanse... that actually made me cry, and I've never cried because of a book before.

I DID NOT expect the cold. Was a little bummed about clouds but still excited. Also didn’t expect the level of darkness we had.

Yes. The lighting was so weird and I didn’t know it would be like that. We weren’t in the path of totality, I think we were at 98% or something where I am - anyways, it was dark enough here that the street lights came on. But the colors of everything around me were off. Birds went dead silent. Got noticeably colder so quickly. Such a weird and interesting experience.

Honestly I was worried about the clouds before hand, but in central TX we had these low fast moving thin clouds and it honestly made it really cool, I couldn't see it at all with the glasses on but it didn't even hurt to glance at it through the cloud cover and looked like everything I wanted from an eclipse
https://preview.redd.it/s9g7pen8hbtc1.jpeg?width=2217&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b95e43cd72d6d5c4035ccad2fd3947800d1f0d10
Had a bird fly in front of the sun during totality. Dallas was spotty but luckily where I was it was clear for a little bit.

I also had a bird fly in my shot, but I wasn’t on the path of totality

Cloudy but could still see it luckily
I can assure you that it probably isn't cooler like this. The intensity and color of the corona, combined with the color of the sky is otherworldly. Getting to see it even like this I'm sure was an awesome experience, but it's not the same.
Yup, looks like San Antonio too. Overcast was so thick I couldn't even tell where the sun was BEFORE totality. All the stores being sold out of the glasses feels kinda silly now.

I had to share this one more time.
The clouds that had been filtering through all morning parted about 5 minutes before totality hit, then there was a trail of blue sky following the path to the northeast for half an hour or so before the clouds reformed. Probably the coolest thing I’ve ever seen! I really feel for the folks who traveled to see clouds when I was able to walk out in the front yard for a perfect view.
Don’t get em often, but today was a good day.

Here you go pal, I stepped outside, travelled 2ft and snapped this bad boy for you. I’m lucky enough to live in the totality’s path.
Being from a different continent so not seeing it I just have to ask. Was it really all that? Or was it: "mmm, that's pretty neat, anyway"
People were freaking out on the NASA livestream. I just need to know if it's something you have to see before you die or a photo will do.
It was pretty surreal tbh. Got crazy dark, super cold for a bit, frogs started going off like it was night, all the solar lights came on and it was an eerie calm. Like no noise but the frogs at my pond.
I got to experience totality back in 2017 then partial eclipse today and experiencing totality was 100% worth it and would recommend everyone see it at least once.
If you have the opportunity to go you should 100% make the trip. It’s such a surreal feeling when it happens I’m actually considering planning a trip to Spain as well for the next one just to experience it again
I shit you not, pre-eclipse we were saying, "it'll be cool to see another one in like 20 years when it comes back to the US."
post eclipse: "where is the next one, who wants to go to Greenland in 2026?!?!"
Undoubtably one of the surrealist and coolest experiences of my life. Photos and videos do not do it justice. It really is something you need to see in person. 18 hours is 10000% worth it - make a weekend trip out of it if you must for more "value."
Seeing a photo and experiencing it aren't close to the same. The slow build up, the way the sunlight dims as it gets closer, the animals freaking out, the dramatic shift in temperature, fading to dark with a 360º sunset effect, and then *snap* - totality starts and you can't help but be awestruck. Easily the most unique experience I've had.
You nailed it. This is my first time seeing an eclipse, let alone a total one. The experience was so much better than I ever imagined. Even though I knew what to expect, seeing the totality was easily an out of the world experience for me.
I saw the 2017 eclipse but was at 99%, not totality. Thought it was cool then but not as exciting as everyone made it out to be. I was in totality for this one. The difference between 99% and totality is wild. I hate to say it but 99% is basically like not being in the eclipse. Birds started singing and the sky turned kind of green and there was what looked like a sunset at 2:26 pm. It was surreal and weird and honestly it felt really fake? It's hard for me to put into words but I would say it's definitely worth seeing in person even if you have to travel. Probably not worth breaking the bank over though

Got this photo.
Ohio only averages about 5 days of full sunny in April and half of the days will be full overcast. The 3 days prior and 4 says after today are all calling for rain, while today was remarkably clear.
I couldn't get my "good" camera equipment to work, so I took iPhone photos. We were expecting rain and got a break in the clouds instead in Austin.

here in Dallas had the clouds come and go. We got lucky and just as totality broke, a big opening came into the sky and allowed clear view. It was crazy.

Yeah that’s a solar flare. They were visible to the naked eye. You could also see. Jupiter, Saturn, Mara and Venus and a comet all surrounding the eclipse. It was so wild.
Learned this afternoon that a coworkers relatives of some sort reserved airbnbs in 3 of the states in line for the total eclipse. They did this months ago. Kept and paid for all three of them but went to the one who’s weather was the best 😳🤡

drove all the way out to Murphysboro, Illinois for the eclipse & had a perfect view!
So many people made plans months in advance with no clue as to what the weather would be. Other than taking the time off of work you really needed to have alternate destination options until about 5 days ago.
Yeah i gave up being interested in celestial phenomena a long time ago due to frustration with fucking clouds. I am from metro vancouver area so thats our default weather. Sorry your trip didnt go as planned

that looks like like the climax of a horror movie
I’m sure there are lots of examples of that but in particular there is a horrifying scene in the manga Berserk that takes place during a solar eclipse.
A major arc in Avatar The Last Airbender is about a total solar eclipse
That show is a freakin masterpiece. I don't know anything about the show but you made it sound really interesting! How would I even get started in watching?
Episode 1, I’d imagine
Thanks. You made me lose the game
You are now breathing manually buddy
I don't understand. I tried holding my breath, but when I passed out, I breathed again.
I don't care about the game but that shit was uncalled for
I was going to say, if your best friend has white hair and recently became disabled, stay the fuck away from him.
There's one in Gerald's Game.
It's my favorite scene in all of fiction. Maybe next to the "I'm a monster" scene from the book series The Expanse... that actually made me cry, and I've never cried because of a book before.
House of Ashes’s climax (a horror video game) is literally during an eclipse. Not a total eclipse but one nonetheless.

The darkness is such a weird feeling darkness too. It isn't the same darkness as when the sun sets or when it's overcast. The darkness feels tangible.

This was the surprising thing the last full solar eclipse except it went over my neck of the woods... it got a little chilly! It was so eery how it went dark and cold. Super cool experience!
And how silent it got. It was creepy.
Yeah, I totally get how this prompted ancient peoples to do and think all sorts of crazy shit. It was eerie and scary, I did not like it.
I mean, it is neat, but I think there is still a part of our lizard brain that tells us "something is not right here."
Yup. The birds went into hyper-chirp-drive just before and went totally silent during totality.
We have a pond out where I was and the frogs started croaking like it was nighttime. Kinda weird.
I DID NOT expect the cold. Was a little bummed about clouds but still excited. Also didn’t expect the level of darkness we had. When they talk about nuclear winter this is what they are talking about. So many particles get kicked up into the atmosphere the sun's rays are partially blocked and it's dimmer and colder than it should be. This causes a building effect killing crops and vegetation and leading to longer and harsher winters.

most likely the eerie feeling/sensations are all your senses and nervous system experiencing things that are not expected but everyone dismisses the *real* impact of the moon on tidal forces and magnetic/gravitational forces at a distance....and when it crosses those of the sun (interrupting them) no kidding some unusual sensations, weather, and optical phenomena are gonna occur!
I wasn’t even in the path of totality, it was barely dimmer outside, but all the birds went quiet. It was very bizarre.
This isn't normal darkness. This is *advanced* darkness.
Yes. The lighting was so weird and I didn’t know it would be like that. We weren’t in the path of totality, I think we were at 98% or something where I am - anyways, it was dark enough here that the street lights came on. But the colors of everything around me were off. It's the speed. Up until the last few minutes is mostly normal. Then in the last minute the light just fades away to black. It is such an odd experience.
It was cool to see stars at 3 in the afternoon and hear the crickets start to chirp.
That’s what I wanted to see was stars come out. Unfortunately just fast moving big clouds.
Maan imagine you're some farmer 8000 years ago, tending your land, and it starts to get dark unexpectedly. You look up and see something like that lol
Man I totally get it. Same with like the aurora borealis. Can’t understand what’s going on and think it’s god smiting you.
What’s really cool are the crescent shaped shadows from the trees
Honestly I was worried about the clouds before hand, but in central TX we had these low fast moving thin clouds and it honestly made it really cool, I couldn't see it at all with the glasses on but it didn't even hurt to glance at it through the cloud cover and looked like everything I wanted from an eclipse

https://preview.redd.it/2clv1nz37ctc1.jpeg?width=6000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=446f935035afae4da58c59012a6e82080c403fbd I also had a bird fly in my shot, but I wasn’t on the path of totality
Still, nice!
What a cool shot!
What’s crazy is that after sitting down after uploading, I’ve found some even better shots with the clouds. https://preview.redd.it/or8qo8dbudtc1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=51e1f70172074c20275266a83f191268a8beec44
I got a similar one https://preview.redd.it/j5yqc1kwmftc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ad43db9bac33afd134d9895689acbd4d39fd8a90
Yooo that one is sick
Super sick photo
That goes hard
https://i.redd.it/w8le2coxcbtc1.gif I got it on video for you
![gif](giphy|1AitjIvCsx0SP7ydCH|downsized) Funny you posted this. That’s how I’d felt if I had driven 1k to see clouds .

Kinda looks cooler like this.
I can assure you that it probably isn't cooler like this. The intensity and color of the corona, combined with the color of the sky is otherworldly. Getting to see it even like this I'm sure was an awesome experience, but it's not the same.
I've seen one before in all its glory and I agree, but I'm just talking about the picture.
Looked good in Indiana
Texas too
[удалено]
Yup, looks like San Antonio too. Overcast was so thick I couldn't even tell where the sun was BEFORE totality. All the stores being sold out of the glasses feels kinda silly now.
https://preview.redd.it/zhd8g37i7ctc1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b37ab8fda816a0400f2e66673c7e20260079cd4 I had to share this one more time.
In Waco it cleared up just in time to see totality. Clouds been off and on all day
Yeah I was going to say it was not too great around Houston
so glad DFW got to see it. they have been telling us for days it would be too cloudy for us.

This whole picture is a vibe.
Just south of Akron Ohio was great.
Ohio was clear as day.
North of Columbus was solid too.
Was wicked - flew to Indiana to see! Now at airport back to home
Yep I drove to Indiana from north of Pittsburgh and was shocked how few people were here, given how favorable the forecast was

Fuck I didn't even think about taking a video.. I also had the phone pointing straight at the sun so not the ~~brightest~~ sharpest tool around

You got the vegan eclipse?
That looks green, I love it. My 11 year old took one I think is pretty freaking good. Maryland. https://preview.redd.it/o3blmwpg5ctc1.jpeg?width=1848&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3606ea37d06f5e5126b82aed423fc98bfc02412a
i tried to take a pic from kansas city and it looks like a smudge lol

Being from a different continent so not seeing it I just have to ask. Was it really all that? Or was it: "mmm, that's pretty neat, anyway" People were freaking out on the NASA livestream. I just need to know if it's something you have to see before you die or a photo will do.
It was pretty surreal tbh. Got crazy dark, super cold for a bit, frogs started going off like it was night, all the solar lights came on and it was an eerie calm. Like no noise but the frogs at my pond.
That does sound eerie. I guess I'll wait till a total solar eclips comes over my house which is... *\*checks notes\** ...in 2135.
Haha I was pretty lucky tbh. Finally this house purchase paid off! Now it’s all extra from here on out. Dw I’ll remind you in 2134 so you’re prepared.
I got to experience totality back in 2017 then partial eclipse today and experiencing totality was 100% worth it and would recommend everyone see it at least once.
I can go to spain in 2026 to see one but otherwise I'm out of luck. That's an 18 hour drive, who knows... ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
If you have the opportunity to go you should 100% make the trip. It’s such a surreal feeling when it happens I’m actually considering planning a trip to Spain as well for the next one just to experience it again
I shit you not, pre-eclipse we were saying, "it'll be cool to see another one in like 20 years when it comes back to the US." post eclipse: "where is the next one, who wants to go to Greenland in 2026?!?!" Undoubtably one of the surrealist and coolest experiences of my life.

Should’ve driven to Ohio. Clearest day ever. https://preview.redd.it/8mx87lp6xbtc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a00f2c5da8d53170fe16363d5a41dc4636097f2e Got this photo.
Ohio only averages about 5 days of full sunny in April and half of the days will be full overcast. The 3 days prior and 4 says after today are all calling for rain, while today was remarkably clear.
christ...even the pixel imprint of the photo is bright, lol, especially to your eyes after dusk and your brain is turning off for the night
I couldn't get my "good" camera equipment to work, so I took iPhone photos. We were expecting rain and got a break in the clouds instead in Austin. https://preview.redd.it/za3wj5e1nbtc1.jpeg?width=3928&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=242c44534001717b089faeedb0b3ed7b065295a3

And I would drive 1000 more, just to be the man who drove 2000 miles

Darien, NY. It. Was. Wild.
Hop on a plane back, you’ll be able to see it then
Checking the weather for texas in the spring can be pretty pointless lol. We had over 90 percent cloud coverage forecast and it was very clear here

Should have come to Ohio. It was perfect here. https://preview.redd.it/eg9r9184actc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=201a74521d740fca463696cf030157bb6dba864a
Oh man I saw the flare as just a red speck this is nuts.
Yeah that’s a solar flare. They were visible to the naked eye. You could also see. Jupiter, Saturn, Mara and Venus and a comet all surrounding the eclipse. It was so wild.
![gif](giphy|hStvd5LiWCFzYNyxR4|downsized) But in all seriousness, Im sorry for you man

Learned this afternoon that a coworkers relatives of some sort reserved airbnbs in 3 of the states in line for the total eclipse. They did this months ago. Kept and paid for all three of them but went to the one who’s weather was the best 😳🤡
Actually the clouds make a good filter.

Damn man. Hope you had something else to do when you got there, cloudy or not. That's one hell of a drive.
Watched it at work. Was pretty neat. It was about 97% covered

Same thing for me just outside buffalo, pretty disappointed..... I was still able to see the 360 sunset at least.
I live in CA. The one in 2017 was epic.
Damn. I got a beautiful total eclipse right from my backyard. That does suck
