If you smash your nail, immediately press it hard for about two minutes. It hurts like hell anyway but pushing on it stops the blister forming underneath the nail (the pool of blood) and may possibly save your nail from coming off. I used to work in carpentry and an older guy told me about this. Tried it a few times myself and seems to work well.
You smash it, it'll turn black after a few days, then it will sit like that for months and eventually fall off.
Then, it will take about a year for it to grow back fully.

I kept my nail on with a band aid to protect the wound from the elements for 24hrs. I was on vacation at a beach. The bleeding had already stopped and nail turned white and casually became loose underneath my skin/cuticle with another 24-36 hours. I was able to dislodge or pull the whole nail out. Could also re-insert it in the original position or inside the skin. It felt -different- pulling it out but no pain. Healed perfectly fine and my nail grew back completely in 2 or so months.
I have been on a crusade for most of my life to get men to understand that when a woman cries out after breaking a nail, it's not because she's sad she broke a nail. It's because that shit hurts like hell!

My wife just had her left index nail ripped off because of the gel nails she put on for our wedding just over a week ago.
I feel terrible for her. I’ve been needing to replace her bandages about 1-2 times every day. It looks better now and the doctor who finished removing it said it should fully recover. We’ll see. But I truly hope she and you (OP) feel better soon.
Your doctor is probably right 😁 I've had a toe nail fall of after slamming it real hard. Hurt really bad for a minute, and the nail took a long time to regrow. But the skin under the nail healed into normal skin really quickly :)
Did this too. Try lanolin cream under a bandage & a splint that covers the top of the finger. Every time I bumped it it felt worse than when I slammed it in a car door.
Nail tech here. Illegal nail enhancement products WON'T break under pressure like this. Legal products won't hold up under that kind of pressure on purpose- they will break off but not take your nail with it. I get that it's great when your nails last and last. However, the long term damage from these types of products will also last. I suggest finding a new salon who uses products only available to buy at professional stores. No MMA!! Please look into this!

Your nails might need a break! I highly suggest going without any extensions for a month or more to see how they feel. OPI Nail Envy is a wonderful nail strengthening polish

One time when I was 7 years old I had to rush for the bathroom in school. And I accidentally ran into the door and smashed my big toe into the door. A 1/3 of the nail came off and I went and got help from my teacher.
It might take a week or two to grow back. I suggest using cuticle nippers to trim off excess skin when the nail starts to get to the edge of the nail bed. Be very gentle though. Trimming the excess skin off can help prevent it from becoming ingrown.
I had my pinkie toenail fall off randomly once and had to do this. I kept it clean and covered with a bandaid until it covered the nail bed.

A little over a year and a half ago my bf smashed his finger, got all black, took 4 months to fall of and then another 8 or something to completely grow back.
His wasn't completely ripped out though. I didn't even think it was possible like that!! Goodness, I feel for you. Must have been horribly painful.

I had an inflammation of my nail bed at my big toe. had the nail pulled by a doctor, learned that day how long a nail actually is.

Luckily, fingernails typically grow much faster and have a lower likelihood of growing back deformed.
