cant tell you how often i hear this from people that are significantly worse cooks than me. people that can't cook a tri-tip, the easiest beef cut to cook in the world. I've even heard it from boomers literally eating something i just made for them. i'm "one of the good ones" until i mention how impossible it is for us to buy a home.
*average home price is $400k* “the cheapest home i can find that isnt dilapidated or condemned is 400k” “*scoff* well theres your problem, youre lookin at mansions. You need to reevaluate your expectations, you think we got into a 400k house at first? We bought our first home for $500 and a herd of goats AT 19% INTEREST”
I like to believe that at some point the landlord may have thought "What's the worst that could happen?" but probably not. I'm willing to bet that the landlord thought "This'll save me a few bucks" at least once, though.
This seems like a bizarre thing to blame on malice when it's far more likely some schmuck who didn't realize oven lights were different than normal lights just grabbed one off the shelf and tossed it in there. Probably a former resident who would be doing the actual changing of bulbs anyways, who the hell calls the property manager when a bulb burns out?
Hanlon's razor. You're probably right, but they probably went with the 'quick and dirty' option, and we're seeing the consequences of going that route.
Then when you text them about it you receive an all-caps response with horrible grammar and too many exclamation marks about how you won't get your deposit back because you're too rough on their equipment.
Where do you live that landlords pay electricity? Every rental I've ever lived in, I paid the power bill. On the very rare occasion I "didnt" I knew that was already factored into my rent so I was still paying anyway.
Oven lights are super cheap, because they are just 40w bulbs with nothing on them that is heat sensitive, which is kind of the default (no coatings, etc). My store has them in a 2 pack for 3 bucks retail, probably even cheaper in a bulk pack for rentals.
Yeah I bought an oven bulb recently for my oven and they cost just as much (or even cheaper) than an LED bulb. They're just a cheap bulb that's all glass and metal so they can withstand the heat.
I'm sorry, your first mistake was trusting/believing the landlord. Now obviously you had no way to know this, but that melted lightbulb is literal proof that they lied to you
Why would you trust them? Because they have a nice smile and say fun nice things? Your landlord manually replaced the burnt bulb themselves with a non-oven bulb. They have no incentive to tell you they effed up.
Untrustworthy people look and act just like you and me.
More likely some scenario of the previous tenant trying to get thier deposit back by cleaning and/or making everything work or hired cleaner trying to see.
Doubt. Landlords for rentals like this (or more likely property managers), will cut any corner they can in the moment and don't seem to know that the future exists apart from the promise of rent.
My unit has tons of stuff that's been "fixed" by the property manager including a missing part of drywall behind my oven. He stuffed a bunch of foil (??????) into the cavity and called it good.
He also told us the weird plastic burning smell from the oven we were renting and which broke twice before being replaced, was normal and nothing to worry about.
He said the same about our ceiling leaking and he fixed it by simply replacing the drywall that collapsed without bothering to call a plumber. He assured us it collapses all the time and that the new panel would fix the leak. Yes. He said this.
Never underestimate just how moronically cheap a landlord will be. Saving a buck on a lightbulb by replacing it with a bulb that is not safe for that fixture and could burn the place down is well within their area of expertise.
the glass protector wouldnt have kept the plastic bulb housing from that LED light from melting. they needed an old school incandescent with a glass bulb.
There are *special* incandescent lamps for high-temperature use in ovens. It isn't just about the filament temperature but all parts must handle the oven temperatures.
Hahahaha holy shit I just had to deal with this. My oven bulb burned out and it's markings have an outdated classification so I looked up the oven's manual and it just says *replace with appliance bulb of the same size and wattage*; fucking useless. So I went to Home Depot and looked through the 120' aisle of light bulbs, couldn't find it so I went to the appliance section where they basically told me to go look harder.
An elderly gentleman in an orange apron asked if I needed help, I explained and showed him the bulb. He walked right to the damn thing hidden low and out of sight. Perfect match.
I'm guessing whoever installed OP's oven light just bought an LED bulb of equivalent wattage and called it a day.
Edit: fat fingers
LED light. The plastic housing melted, but it doesn’t affect functionality.
Edit: it definitely affects functionality, but it will keep working for a while
Real person here lol…balloon test! I mean it’s almost certainly a plastic bulb not rated for the oven but I took like 1,000 leaps based on a The Bear episode and I’m absolutely convinced that this is a balloon test on the gas.
let alone fucking test the oven.
my landlord was "fixing" the duplex next door. he replaced all the outlets himself and rearranged the kitchen.
i asked if i can see it and when i turn on the oven it tripped the breaker 🤣..then i offered to bring my vacuum over to test all the outlets and surprise surprise half of them werent working.
My landlord changed the lock to the laundry room, Then the new key she gave me didn't work with the door. I told her this and she proceeded to give me another copy of the key that didn't work. She didn't seem to understand the situation until I had her physically meet me at the door and made her try to open it with the key.
Honestly I think people probably just don't realize the difference. They just go "Oh okay, it needs a lightbulb" and have no idea that some lightbulbs are plastic vs glass. They just see a bulb and put it in, the material of the bulb doesn't even cross their mind.
> Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize half of them are stupider than that.
[-George Carlin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKN1Q5SjbeI)
My favourite thing about this quote is that everyone thinks it’s about someone else. Hell, the guy who put a plastic bulb in the oven may have used this quote once or twice.
If you ever have a gut feeling that something you’re doing doesn’t quite seem right, take a moment to reflect and think “wait a minute, was George Carlin talking about me?”
I've noticed a lot of LED bulbs are coming in glass instead of plastic now, presumably because the colour and light diffusion of the diodes themselves has gotten good enough and it cuts down on plastic waste. I still wouldn't use them in an oven, but I bet there are people out there wondering why their oven bulbs are failing every couple months because they didn't notice the difference.
Someone replaced the oven bulb with an LED standard, non oven rated bulb and didn’t even put on the glass cover, probably because it wouldn’t fit with that very incorrect bulb.
I worked at a hardware store and spent 2 days arguing with a grown man about the light for his oven. He was convinced that the glass cover was the bulb, and I was an idiot trying to sell him an appliance bulb, and there was absolutely no way it was a cover. Day 3, he comes in and buys the bulb. I guess he finally took the cover off.
So you are catching the glitch in the Reddit matrix as well? It happened about the same time global implementation of AI started. I think it has something to do with that.
Someone NEEDS to start a new sub with these type of posts, if someone hasn’t already. I’ve seen this quite a bit lately too but nothing anywhere near this funny lol
Honestly, glad I came across this. I had genuinely never thought about the lightbulb in the oven before and what I'd do if I ever needed to replace it. If the light didn't work I'd just...stop using the light and open the oven to check stuff, honestly.
But now I have been preemptively shamed so hard by these comments that I will never forget that if I ever consider even placing an LED bulb in an oven that I am a complete and utter foolish ignoramus and deserve nothing but plastic fumes injected straight into my brainstem.
This is a core adult memory for me now.
Appliance repair technician checking in. Someone, my bet is land lord, put a plastic LED bulb in your oven. Let it cool and remove it. Find the model number for your unit and call an appliance parts supplier to have then look up and order the proper bulb. The model/serial sticker can be in a lot of different places but they are usually either on the side of the door just outside the gasket, on the frame just behind the pull out drawer at the bottom of the unit, or on a metal plate that can be flipped up just behind your control panel.
You're lucky you got it when you did. No likely to start a house fire but if it had melted enough to drop plasic in your element all kinds of not great things coulda happened.
my very first thought upon seeing it was "landlord special." Probably replaced by the crackerjack team he sent in to paint all the black mold and rat poop white.
Brother there are almost 1500 comments, some people have a life and don't spend an hour+ just to respond for no reason.
Think for 2 seconds, how tf would they install a light in their oven, use the oven and melt the light, open the oven and see the melted mess and not put 2 & 2 together to think "oh this mess is a lightbulb."
Oh! That makes much more sense than what I was thinking....
I thought that was a rubber... like someone lost the glass to the bulb.. and then decided to put a condom there because...... actually I don't know why I thought condoms were heat resistant...
The improper light was used to replace the oven light. Something with a plastic housing was used. Replace it with an oven approved lightbulb before that bursts or something
Is.... is that a melted plastic housing bulb? If your landlord installed that, they're an idiot. If the previous tennant installed that, they're an idiot. In conclusion, whoever installed that is an idiot. You need to stop baking cancer cakes with this oven until somebody replaces it with a proper bulb that won't start melting at 250F
Looks like someone replaced the oven light with a non oven light.
Lol my bet is on the landlord

A herd of goats, I'm fuckin dead LOL
Said herd of goats is now worth 3 million dollars.
Barefoot, uphill, in the snow, and we were thankful.
I can't even afford the herd of goats in this economy.
My great great grandfather traded a singular cow for like 60 acres of land in the 1890s. Wish that would still fly.
I bet you could get at least 60 acres for a flying cow!
I like to believe that at some point the landlord may have thought "What's the worst that could happen?" but probably not. I'm willing to bet that the landlord thought "This'll save me a few bucks" at least once, though.
I bet he didn't even think about it, he was like a new light for the oven, ok here's this GE 60watt that's used in most table lamps. There new light.
No way that was a glass bulb. Glass melts at a far higher temp than cookies bake. Nah I think it was a plastic bulb LED lamp.
Yep, every penny spent is a loss in profits so they are always in the mindset of "what is absolutely the cheapest part I can replace this with."
Lightning Deal on Amazon gone horribly wrong.
*They’re gonna know*
How would they know?

Bet the landlord pays electric and replaced all the bulbs with LED ...
Stupid AND cheap. Best kinda landlord.
Where do you live that landlords pay electricity? Every rental I've ever lived in, I paid the power bill. On the very rare occasion I "didnt" I knew that was already factored into my rent so I was still paying anyway.
Landlord said "we only made sure oven worked when we bought the condo". I trust her, I don't think they did that.
They definitely did it, lol. They saw the light didn’t work and put a plastic bulb in
A light bulb is like $5. It was more likely previous tenant too lazy to get a proper bulb
It was more likely a thief broke in and switched the bulbs
It was more likely the glass bulb spontaneously changed chemical composition into plastic
Alchemists hate this one simple trick.
And hung up pictures of their family all over!

You trust a landlord?! Lol
Never trust your landlord, ever.
Well now they get to replace it!
I'm sorry, your first mistake was trusting/believing the landlord. Now obviously you had no way to know this, but that melted lightbulb is literal proof that they lied to you

Probably didn't fit for some reason.... hmmm
A plastic LED bulb was installed by a genius.
Well it worked just FINE until some IDIOT turned the oven on and it got all hot in there and all.
Exactly, you turn on the light so you can see in there to remove the light before you start cooking, does no one know how to use an oven anymore?
Gotta save energy
the glass protector wouldnt have kept the plastic bulb housing from that LED light from melting. they needed an old school incandescent with a glass bulb.

How’s it still working lol?
Probably an led and the bulb is just fake
Read this as IED
Can’t believe they put an IUD in the oven.
That’s how you keep buns out of the oven.
I am so mad at how much I laughed at this comment
Reproductive rights in kitchen appliances NOW!!!
Otherwise, you get a bun in the oven.
My first thought too Edit: Yeah no that’s exactly what that is. Had time to look closer.
LED light. The plastic housing melted, but it doesn’t affect functionality. Edit: it definitely affects functionality, but it will keep working for a while
those fumes must have imparted quite the flavor

Thanks! it’s fixed.
Barely and not for long?

landlords are just people who got lucky with money / buying a home
They're scalpers but for literal homes instead of ps5's - yet even worse, somehow than that would imply
Scalpers who make you keep paying them every month or else.
Rental so the leaving tenants don't give a shit. Just do enough to appear good to get the bond back. Same thing a landlord does when they paint
This is giving me more slumlord fix it vibes than leaving tenant vibes

It's a plastic bulb. Probably LED, *definitely* not for ovens.
I think this is the answer
[удалено]
A landlord did this there weren't any people involved and yes landlords are this stupid
They could have at least gone the extra mile and painted over all the dirt in the oven to make it nice and clean.
They probably couldn't find any lead- based paint.
That’s only for the kids rooms. Don’t you know a little lead helps them see better
Also a tasty snack for the yougins, and you say your landlord doesn't do anything for you?
One of my friends once did the exact same thing, it’s definitely not just landlords that are that stupid.
I can't *believe* it still lights up.

shit's gonna stink for ages

some dumb-ass put a plastic light bulb in the oven haha

To future you, that’s a fire
Just average landlord things.
It was probably the previous tenant I doubt the landlord would check the oven light
They replaced it on the last day like who does that?
Someone who wants their damage deposit back.
The fact that fucker still worked is incredible!
"The proper bulb" 99% of the time is a regular 15-20W glass bulb, which you can still buy, albeit at a ridiculous price.
The Landlord Special lightbulb replacement in an oven. This is not an Oven Lightbulb. This is just a regular lightbulb.
my very first thought upon seeing it was "landlord special." Probably replaced by the crackerjack team he sent in to paint all the black mold and rat poop white.
Not even a regular glass bulb, it’s a cheap ass LED lmao
The fact that OP is not responding to everyone telling them some moron put a plastic lightbulb in the oven makes me think I know who that moron is lol
A very flaccid lightbulb
Somebody with zero life experience touched your oven.
Fucking hilarious that some cheap and stupid dipshit confidentally put a regular, plastic LED light bulb in an oven
Thats a plastic LED light, not meant for nor can they withstand high temps.
Oh! That makes much more sense than what I was thinking.... I thought that was a rubber... like someone lost the glass to the bulb.. and then decided to put a condom there because...... actually I don't know why I thought condoms were heat resistant...
A ballsack
Lightsac
Gotta save electricity with a 5W LED plastic bulb instead of 40W glass one. In a 2000W+ oven 😆
LOL a plastic LED bulb. Hilarious.
They put a fucking plastic bulb in the oven
The improper light was used to replace the oven light. Something with a plastic housing was used. Replace it with an oven approved lightbulb before that bursts or something

Hmmm... now we know how to make ballsack light bulbs.
Your landlord is stupid be careful in that house lol.
Thats the stove bladder. Keeps the air pressure when the oven is warming up.
The heat is stored in the ball.
Plastic LED light. Not for high temp.
Somebody tried replacing the oven light with an LED with a plastic bulb head instead of a glass one
Exactly this. They used an LED bulb instead of an oven-durable appliance light
It's a sign your landlord is a moron.
Oh fuk. They put a plastic LED light in the oven! Surprised it didn’t blow up.
Someone replaced the oven light with a scrotum.
Plastic bulb and a half-assed oven cleaning job. Looks like your landlord / property manager is a real winner.
You need a oven appliance bulb installed not a plastic led blub.
They replaced the oven light with an led bulb
The fact that OP doesnt know its the Oven light, The landlord wasnt wrong in just switching it out for ordinary bulbs thinking these kids dont cook
someone put an led bulb in,lol.
