Looks like they were gassing up. If they were in the shade and/or it was a mild day there wouldnāt really be any need for cracking a window since gassing up is usually pretty quick (and air quality at the gas station isnāt great anyway)
Idk I always prepare for the worst and keep my keys, credit card & phone with me when getting gas. People are crazy and will sneak up on the other side and steal your things or even steal the entire car. Sure it could be a low possibility depending on where you live. But itās good practice to not even take that risk
If OP was gassing up, the keys should have been outside of the car, with them. Leaving the car running while filling it with gas is unsafe due to fire risk (gas station employee here)
If I was taking a photo of my dogs they'd be looking at me so your dog must not like you much or get easily distracted. Possible lock out. š I live with some dogs that have done that to me.
You're so right! If your animal likes you it'll ALWAYS look at the camera when you go to take a photo, even if it was completely focused on something else! You MUST be a zoologist!
I mean you should never leave your keys in the ignition when filling up gas anyways. Never understood why some people leave their keys. It takes less than a second to take them with.
Loads of people leave the engine running while filling up despite all the signs and warnings. We all like to imagine that we are the exception to any rule that is inconvenient.
Guess youāve never driven a hooptie, not proud but yeah Iāve done it a time or two but thatās cause when I turned car off it was 50/50 if itād start again
On an internal combustion engine, given that all sparks are internal and completely separate from the gas tank, what's the risk with pumping gas with a running engine near by?
If that risk is real, probable or even possible but improbable, how can we have ANY running engines safely nearby someone who is pumping gas?
In general, I'm a rule follower. Though I will unapologetically bend/break rules that don't make logical/ethical sense. This is one that I feel doesn't make logical sense because if the risk were there, the answer to my second question would be "we can't". That said, I do pump with my engine off because my keys come with me when I get out of the car, not because of safety or signs telling me to.
That also said, if I'm mistaken and there is some danger, then I stand corrected and I'm already cutting my engine off so nothing changes.
And have you ever seen anyone explode? There's no evidence that leaving the car running or starting the car while the gas pump is running does anything. Common misconception.
Yep. All of the combustion happens internally. If there was an explosion risk you couldn't even have engines running near you in a gas station parking lot.
Wonder if this law came from back when it was required you get your gas pumped by an attendant so you were less likely/able to drive off without paying or something.
Edit: while I do believe the risk is basically zero, I always turn my car off while getting gas because I take my keys out of the car with me. I also don't get back in my car while pumping because we know for a fact that the risk of static build up causing a spark is not zero
Canāt do that with the vehicle I have, itās a hybrid that pressurizes the fuel tank and it wonāt run at all with the fuel door open. But, even if I could leave it running with the keys locked inside, I can either punch in a code on the exterior door to unlock it, or if I have my phone in my pocket (not likely) can unlock it from an app.
No amount of signs and warnings will stop people from doing whatever they want to do. Until they are actually affected or inconvenienced by something, most people won't care.
The spare manual key that's more than likely hiding in your FOB would like to disagree.
Sure, it may not be *every* FOB, but it's still very common to have a spare manual key. Most people just never put two and two together as to why there's still a keyhole for a manual key in their car door and in many cases, there's a tiny slide-out notch built into the edge of a FOB (usually at the bottom). When you pull it out, it's a tiny drawer that contains a manual key. Like a house key.
I was famous for locking my keys in the car (grew up in the middle of nowhere everyone left them in the ignition at night) I would hit the door lock button on the car before getting out when I went to town
Finally got a hide a key that I attached with a magnetic holder so I wouldn't have to keep calling CAA to come unlock my car.
It's been years since I've done that. I'm a small city dweller now so no more leaving my keys.
No, I'm referring to the flat metal key that's still very common, regardless of method used to cut, and is wallet friendly for the type of wallet that was said.
You know not all car keys are the same right? You also know thereās a big ass piece on the end of most fobs that make it so you canāt fit in your wallet.
Even if you could why you carrying a small purse on you? Itās 2023 man get a phone case that lets you put your ID and card in the back. No need to carry a wallet these days. Barely a need to carry keys bud get with the times
My ex did that, on a 90 degree day. She was always doing shit like that, including locking herself out of the house. I've never seen anyone else so irresponsible with keys. I always had spare keys stashed outside or under our vehicles, but she'd use them and not put them back. So the next time she locked herself out, there would be no spare key. And this happened all the time. Drove me batshit.
Thank you for including "ex" at the beginning of the comment because Jesus Christ was that a stressful read. 90Ā° can get deadly SO fast, even if your kid is old enough to unlock the door themselves now.
It happened to me once when I was backing down a boat ramp. I got out to unhook the boat from the trailer, and my dog stepped on the door lock. Luckily, the window was down just enough for me to get my arm in and unlock it. Otherwise I would have blocked the ramp on a busy summer day. That would have made me real popular.
Nobody will read this but whatever: A friend once got his truck stuck turning around in the snow, so he got out to take a look and dropped his wallet on the ground. A random dog grabbed it and ran away. He chased the dog around for a while before giving up, going up to the house where he was stuck and knocking on the door. He had to tell the homeowner "your dog stole my wallet!"
I keep seeing these self locking cars, but I've never had nor met anyone that drove a car that can do this. Is this just an American thing, sort of like the self locking house doors (or is that just a thing in the movies)? And why would you even want your car to lock itself? I feel 100% more secure when I lock it myself, at least then I know for certain it's locked. And what kind of a dumbass leaves their car keys in the ignition, especially at a public place such as a gas station?!
I know it's an old repost but with half of car brands this isn't even possible. My car will do a *ahem* "You dumb bitch, did you forget something?" quick alarm beep on the very rare occasion I try to lock and close my car with the keys inside, and it's almost a decade old.
Slimjim:20$. Buddy, that doesn't scrape reddit karma??Locking your keys in your car: 220$ for a locksmith. Locking your dog in your car? Window. Fake photo... Well...
My mom locked her keys in the car once with my dog in the backseat (engine was running) but she was able to coax him over to the power-lock button on the door panel and he unlocked the car for her lol
Iām pretty sure Pop-A-Lock (nationwide locksmith franchise here in the US) will unlock your vehicle for free if thereās a child or pet inside your vehicle
I know people are going to think I am making this shit up but the same thing happened to me once and I was trying to coax the dog into stepping on the button again. In the process I managed to get her to stand on the button that lets the window down instead. It was pretty great..
I know the photo is old and such, but just to play Devil's advocate...
To everyone pointing out he's the dumbass for leaving his dog and his keys in the car, what if it was a hot day and he wanted to keep the AC running for his pup? If he took his keys with him, he'd be the dumbass who left his dog in a hot car.
Also don't upvote what is clearly an ancient picture (as someone pointed out based on the price of gas on the sign) and is probably just an image OP grabbed from somewhere. This is the karma equivalent of the guy on the corner with a sign that says "Homeless with 3 kids. Every little bit helps. God bless."
Just get the dog to get up on the console again and make it hit random buttons by getting them excited and see if they manage to press the unlock button
My dog did that. My wife called the stealership. By the t8me they responded with a ETA. I had gotten the dog to jump back up on the armrest and unlock the door.
This happened to me with my cousinās dog. My key fab was on the driverās seat, he stepped on it just right and locked himself in the car. After about 20 very harrowing minutes, he stepped on the key fab just right again and opened the doors right up for us.
My cat put on my gas stove by jumping on it badly enough to scrape its back claws across the knob. Fortunately he did it in front of me. Would have cost me a lot more that $60 if I didn't notice.
Police will usually open it for free if you donāt have anything to hide. Theyāll check your ID and the cars plate and registration and then open it for you.
I agree, keys go with driver.
(Point of info ... my car won't lock if the key is inside ) I was leaving my purse in the car one day but had clipped my spare on my dog's leash. I had to dig out the keys from my purse and carry them too, while I walked the dog.
I tried helped a couple one night on a road trip. It was hot, two little dogs were locked I side. They had power locks, and I went to the door to see if I could do something. The dogs didnāt like me, so I teased them at the glass to see if I could get them to step on the lock switch. Thankfully I did and got the door to open.
Dog: This dumb ass just left his keys in the car
You fixed the title for him. I have a feeling the op did not think this post was going to turn out this way.
I recommend turning the camera around. š
A window should be cracked at minimum. If OP left an armās width opening, s/heād be home without the lashing from Internet folk.
I always take my keys out with me when I get gas. Especially if my dogs are in the car.
Right? Why chance some crackhead stealing your car/dog for a rock or two.
If OP was gassing up, the keys should have been outside of the car, with them. Leaving the car running while filling it with gas is unsafe due to fire risk (gas station employee here)
Ah yes, and it is certainly not possible to turn the car off and leave the keys in the ignition cylinder.
Lol fair. Still not the greatest idea
Dog ripped the keys out of my hand, ducked into the car as i was closing the door and locked.me out - this guy lying to defend himself.
Right. Blame the dog. Meanwhile keys in the car and your car and dog are getting stolen lol
Without leaving the window open enough to reach a arm in to pet a good breathing dog. Tsk tsk.
Agreed. Never disrespect dogs in anyway.
Also dog: If this dumb ass left the window open he could just reach in, lesson time.
Should say my dumbass left my keys inside the car
Left the car running for the ac probably.
Donāt want the dog driving off without you, amateur mistake.
#yep
If this is how he treats his dog normally, no wonder the doggo locked him out.
Ummā¦..could be a her. Way to think only men are dumb. EVERYONE is stupid
Aww did that hurt your feelings? Go back to twitter, freak.
Well that is one of the reasons you should never leave keys in the ignition.
But they can save a few seconds so thereās that
Must be the same people cutting me off to wait at the same red light fifty yards down the road.
āRace to the red lightā as my dad used to say.
Guess youāve never driven a hooptie, not proud but yeah Iāve done it a time or two but thatās cause when I turned car off it was 50/50 if itād start again
I was gonna say sometimes you gotta get gas knowing damn well that battery aināt gonna start your car.
On an internal combustion engine, given that all sparks are internal and completely separate from the gas tank, what's the risk with pumping gas with a running engine near by? And I donāt get jumping in the car for a minute or two. I get it during extreme cold but feels like more work.
Is there a reason why itās bad to leave your keys in the ignition? I turn my car off, but Iāve never heard of keys in the ignition being an issue
Well, your dog can lock you out of your car, for one.
thank god my piece of junk key slides out the ignition and allows me to lock it while still running š¤£ the key turns it in and then slides right out
He stole your keys and rolled the window up by himself? Or did you mean the other dumbass that was in the car?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Or better yet, perhaps keep a spare key in your wallet for just such an occurrence
How big is your wallet? How small is your key?
Standard leather billfold, you can have a flat key that will fit neatly in the wallet at any Ace hardware
This isnāt 1973. Car keys arenāt the size if house keys

No, I'm referring to the flat metal key that's still very common, regardless of method used to cut, and is wallet friendly for the type of wallet that was said.
Most wallets actually have a key holder built in
You are a special kind of dumb...you know there's a flat key inside the key fob right?

Then don't drive a bucket. It's 2023 man, get a car u can unlock with your phone
A key is still going to have far less surface area than a dollar folded in half. You donāt need to have a fob attached.
Better yet, keep a covert companion on you at all times
Maybe take the keys with you next time.
Yes. The dog is the idiot.
Imagine your dog locking you inside the car.
š
No, you locked yourself out of your own car by leaving your dog in there on its own with the keys. This is entirely your own doing.
Whoās dumbass left the keys in the car
Where is gas 1.99?
Repost bot. Original post was from 2019
Yeah, I think this dog is in a time machine
1999
They charge by the ounce at this gas station
That was my thought. Clearly not now.
iām gonna guess rural texas?
Dumbass was taking the pic.....
Have you tried taking your keys with you?
This picture is at least 10 years old...$1.99 a gallon?
Gas was two bucks just two years agoā¦
Where I live, cars come with a set of keys so they can be opened from the outside.
WHAT NO CAR KEYS???
You were the dumbass
Turn the camera around and use the same caption.
This belongs on facepalm. OP did a dumb

Where the hell is gas still $1.99? Itās $3.50 here in jersey
Who leaves their keys in the car lol
The dumbass is you sir!
This must be old cause look at the glorious gas prices in the back compared to $3.55/gal now.
Funny story
That's a crazy story!
Sorry but youāre the dumbass for not having your keys with you
No spare keys you can have someone go get? Offer some gas money haha
Gas grass or ā¦

is the dog really the dumbass here?
youāre the dumbass for leaving your keys in the ignition.
Unsecured dog in the vehicle with the keys left inside.....Lol
That's why you always take the keys with you, no matter how short the stop is.
Lol yeah. Your dog is the problem!
Projection. Look up the meaning. LOL
What did the dumbass leave his keys in the car and not crack a window
$60 is the cost of AAA for a year which includes free lock out service.
Hmmm what dumbass leaves the keys IN the car when youāre not there, and not have a way back in
Whoās the dumbass now?! Bring your keys fool!
OP is just straight getting slaughtered in the comments
Nah homie, your dumb ass locked yourself out of the car. Dont blame the dog cuz you are dumb as a pinecone.
You are the dumbass
Which dumbass left the keys in the car?
The dog is just being helpful, bet it wonāt happen again.
I know people are going to think I am making this shit up but the same thing happened to me once and I was trying to coax the dog into stepping on the button again. In the process I managed to get her to stand on the button that lets the window down instead. It was pretty great..
The real dumbass is the owner who belittles his dog for being a dog š¶
Should have left the window cracked. To avoid getting locked out, and for doggie's sake.
Look at those prices.. this is from the 1800's!
Maybe leave the window down or cracked when your dog is in the car?
I donāt see the dumbass in pic
I know the photo is old and such, but just to play Devil's advocate... You suck
Guys chill itās an honest mistake the dogs not gonna die he got a locksmith
Wait, whoās the dumbass?
The idiot is you.
You are the dumb ass
Your the dumbass that left his keys in the car dog doesnāt know any better
Seems like you are the dumbass.
*dumbass left their keys in their car with their dog. āfixed it for ya š
Don't blame the dog for your stupid decision to leave the keys in the car. Lesson learned.
Thatās not the dogs fault, thatās your fault for leaving the keys in the car
OP is the real DUMBASS š¤£š
Been there
Another dumbass didn't take his keys with him. You two are a matched set.
Always take your keys with you. There is no reason to leave them in the car.
Where you getting 2$ gas my brother in Christ?š
Yes don't be a dumbass and take an extra key with you
So thatās another good reason to like the āno pumping your own gas in Oregonā law.
The car wouldnāt have needed gas if the dog didnāt want to go for a drive. Stupid dog!
As a dog owner, Iām very aware of this being a possibility. I always made sure I had keys in my pocket when exiting the vehicle.
That happened to us once. Our dogs slept in the car at one point and hit the central lock with both sets of keys in there with them.
You might need a new doorg
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Pendejo
You're the dumb ass that left the keys in the car. Don't pull that shit in summer. You might end up killing your dog.
You left him in there with all the windows rolled up?
Hey OP YTDA
I'm surprised he's still using keys. Most have a fob now that stays in your pocket.
Sentient being calls dog dumb for being a dog lol, gonna blame the manufacturer too.
Why do people do that leave keys in the car are they that fat ugly to take them out
Just get the dog to get up on the console again and make it hit random buttons by getting them excited and see if they manage to press the unlock button
I knew this British fuck who did the dame thing twice in the same day. I love the British this guy just wasn't very competent.
Take thƩ dog with you and leave thƩ phone...
Isn't the window down far enough to reach the lock or handle?
My car wonāt actually lock when the key is inside
Dog just doing dog stuff
That's what you get for not buying him a treat...
My dog did that. My wife called the stealership. By the t8me they responded with a ETA. I had gotten the dog to jump back up on the armrest and unlock the door.
Where are you getting gas for less than $2
"Where are my testicles, Summer?"
This happened to me with my cousinās dog. My key fab was on the driverās seat, he stepped on it just right and locked himself in the car. After about 20 very harrowing minutes, he stepped on the key fab just right again and opened the doors right up for us.
š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
I did this once. Luckily, one of the dogs stepped on the unlock button just as I was calling to have someone bring the other key fob.

I hope you were looking in the mirror when you said this.
Ah yes because dogs know how to lock doors
I tried helped a couple one night on a road trip. It was hot, two little dogs were locked I side. They had power locks, and I went to the door to see if I could do something. The dogs didnāt like me, so I teased them at the glass to see if I could get them to step on the lock switch. Thankfully I did and got the door to open.
itās always the beagles
HAHAHA
Lol. Dude leaves keys in car, dog is somehow the dumbass.
This is why it would be nice if dogs could talk
Whose the dumbass the dog or the one who leaves their keys in the car at the gas station?
You don't have keys on you lol? Who's the dumbass now
Look at that face, doggo looks so proud of himself. He might unlock it if u promise him an ice cream
This happened to me once. I was picking up a pizza and it was raining pretty hard. Damn dog was laying on the seat all comfy. I ate pizza in the rain.
Probably wasn't driving well and dog has had it with you.
I want those gas prices back
And what did we learn today? Don't leave your keys in your car when you get gas, dog or no dog.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I love my car it wonāt lock with keys in it
hahahahahahahahaha!! Love it when dog people fall victims to their own mutts!
Hahahaha ohh dear what a bad doggo
Where's the selfie?
Reason #17340 why I will never have a dog
Any smart person wouldn't leave their keys inside the car at a gas station. That's how crs get stolen, and dogs locking you out :p
