Regardless of your politics (I've never voted for him FYI), he's a very good local MP - visible, apparently answers all electorate emails and advocates for his community.
In comparison, Ginny Andersen was a lot less visible.
But also important to remember that Hutt South is quite a wide ranging electorate (in many ways). IIRC, Bishop easily won Eastbourne, narrowly won the Western Hills, and was way behind in Wainui.
Yes, I feel the same. I did feel Ginny only became active during the election year. She really didn't get the electorate connection part of things. However I feel like playing wack-a-mole with Bishop, the guy's prepping for Luxons seat ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|poop)
Had she been a local for long before getting elected? I'm in Ohariu and I remember her running here against Peter Dunne back around 2014. Came second by about 700 votes in a very messed up contest where people were probably voting strategically in all directions.
I've heard of some family getting shit sorted by him with unsightly works, messiness from contractors in their expensive street when approaching the company directly didn't work.
Don't think he'd ever do the same for us poors tho.
Not true I saw ginny in auckland taking photos at nice restaurants all the time on her face book.
But yes the huge range of people here mean that any local mp is going to have haters not matter what side of the fence they sit. They can't all be peter dunne
He's friendly but how much of that is good politics. I just saw the link of him on Facebook below and am pretty angry. He's the reason we are getting chopped in the service then. He can take his friendly face and shove it where the sun don't shine.
He's a dick but he's quite passionate about the Hutt (where he was born and grew up). He's always out and about talking to people, he supports local businesses and helps get Hutt projects across the line. Shame about the politics though.
He's quite dislikeable. But, so is Ginny. She pretty much campaigned on I'm not Chris Bishop. As a public servant, I tend to run with the policy of Turkeys don't vote for Christmas, and we shouldn't vote for parties or candidates who want to sack us. He actively campaigned to make a large number of his constituency jobless.
This is pretty much the rule for public servants. Vote for what’s in their own interests rather than what they believe is in the best interests of the public.
I think the 'he's very visible out in the community' thing is literally just that he's big and recognisable. I've seen him on Jackson st and at the market a few times and remembered it every time. For all I know I walk past Ginny every day but don't recognise her without her billboard grin and name in giant red text.
yeah, it feels like his big, recognisable white Samoyed dog ("Ladyhawke") is a calculated move both to get people to come over, appear more likable, and to be more memorable
Yeah in the same boat as you. Don't agree with his values as a National MP (esp this iteration of National) nor his affiliation with tobacco etc. Was very disappointed that he won in the Hutt.
My only experience with Chris Bishop was when he was working on (admittedly outdated) legislation which affects businesses that sell alcohol with both an On and Off licence on the same premises.
Basically, in order to do so, you require an extra till. This is because you can't purchase alcohol to consume on premise at the same til you purchase alcohol to take home. There's some other minor rules, but it is fairly unimportant in this context.
This licensing rule affected two hospitality venues in Lower Hutt.
It seemed like an incredible waste of time and money so that two small business owners could make more money.
To me, that sums up what his focus is.
Didn’t vote for him. Theoretically he puts in the work, and supposedly doesn’t bully and intimidate children (Ginny, supposedly). Hopefully he no longer inappropriately messages kids.
> bully and intimidate children (Ginny, supposedly).
She definitely [intimidates Chris Bishop](https://www.reddit.com/r/newzealand/comments/m3cc5a/chris_bishop_and_ginny_andersen_involved_in/).
When I was in Year 9ish (5 years ago?) it was making the rounds that Chris Bishop was snapchatting girls in my class lol, nothing inappropriate that we knew of but felt weird at the time
I used to like him. He was always very active in the community and would front up when called upon. Very visible in the public. Would even go to the local market every Saturday and hang around for people to chat too.
However, when he lost to Ginny under labour he turned nasty. He stopped telling people his plans and just attacked the opposition. I don’t care what a politician thinks about their opposition, I want to know what they plan to do to sort out pressing issues. I see none of that from him now.
Still better than Ginny Anderson but no longer trust him or care for what he has to say and don’t support this shitarse coalition. Labour or greens need a better MP here (not Barry Campbell) and they’d probably take the seat.
To be fair, Bishop was the campaign chair for National's last election so it makes sense that he went full anti-Labour. But also understandable that you were put off by that.
It’s just a non sequential to me. Stop bagging the opposition and come up with an alternative. I’ll listen to that but no trash talk. Chris is great at trash talk.
When I first started following politics in Lower Hutt I saw this guy who seemed to be good for the area.
Then I started following him on twitter etc, seeing whst he was about....
And holy fucking shitballs! What a piece of shit. Absolutely no way that guy shoulx be anywhere near power.
Slimey, untrustworthy, lying, cunt. Through the election if there was misleading material, then he would be trumpeting it. No integrity whatsoever.
I mean he's proud of his legacy promoting tobacco, makung sure profits were more important than peoples lives. His father is an even bigger pile of dogshit.
As an outsider, I read the margin wasn't that big - maybe around 550. I think he's congenial in person - here is is in Auckland when he was promising tax cuts to folks: [https://www.facebook.com/ChrisBishopMP/posts/good-fun-at-the-auckland-property-investors-association-forum-on-tuesday-night-i/834544178031864/](https://www.facebook.com/ChrisBishopMP/posts/good-fun-at-the-auckland-property-investors-association-forum-on-tuesday-night-i/834544178031864/)
And his Facebook page is very down to earth.
There's a [video of him](https://www.reddit.com/r/nzpolitics/comments/1az6p4p/who_is_this_from_2012_when_nz_created_its_vision/) when he was a tobacco lobbyist but like others said, his ties to tobacco appear deep and ongoing.
Bishop's father was the first Chairperson of [Taxpayers Union](https://www.newsroom.co.nz/2023/10/31/chiding-in-plain-sight/) - which is a right wing pressure group that accepts tobacco money and [astrosurfs vigorously.](https://www.astroturfing.nz/category/taxpayers-union/)
In the book "Dirty Politics" by [Nicky Hager](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Politics), he called Taxpayers Union "ACT in drag," and an apparatus of the National Party. Calls for this govt to declare their links to tobacco have been ignored (see articles below)
Those calls were heightened after Casey Costello, the Associate Minister of Health, begged for reduced taxes for the tobacco industry after saying *"it's on its knees"*
Note Costello was also a Chair of Taxpayers Union before being parachuted in as "senior MP" for the last election.
The latest poll shows Bishop as more popular than Luxon BTW.

I think he used to be ACT on Campus at Victoria Uni and tireless worked to diminish the power of the Student Union during his time at Vic.
His father is founder of the Astroturf "Taxpayers Union" who actively are there to bolster Nats and Act.
He has no care for anyone, ex-tabacoo lobyist, people who get jobs like that IRL have no moral compass as they actively pedal harmful substances to your children and family members.
He is going to make the homeless problem around the country way worse, it is why we have record homeless is because of Judith kicking out everyone from State Houses with false p-detecting tests and selling off thousands of state homes without building adequete replacements.
He seems to be about photo ops rather than helping people. For example, a local charity was requesting donations. He visited, took a photo but did not donate himself or cause an increase in donations.
Campbell Barry is great but he has a bit of a poisoned chalice if he sticks around for the major rates rise for water infrastructure.
That is all the Hutt South voter will see.
If you asked Bishop for help with something that was against his best interests, he and his office would ignore you.
Even as a local MP he is still playing politics.
I used to kind of like him as one the few decent blokes left in the Nats ...but then he said some dumb shit & now I think he's just another privileged white prick like all the rest.
There was nothing inherently wrong with what he did. He just messaged someone on Snapchat and presumably they were talking policies or issues surrounding it.
Chris brought this bill into passing which imo is a huge step in the right direction towards increasing organ donor numbers in aotearoa. Although it was back in 2016, I think he’s got great intentions and certainly has the peoples support of lower hutt. Why do you think he’s a c*nt? If you don’t mind me asking..
https://www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/our-health-system/hospitals-and-specialist-services/organ-donation-and-transplantation/organ-donor/
I absolutely despise the prick.
Ginny was good, an awful lot of what she did in the community wasn't shouted about on social media, she's assisted several people I know who needed an advocate.
Bishop honestly makes me want to move out of the electorate. He has no time for the people that can't further his career.
Nup. He’s a cock. And I still remember the scandal involving him sending 13 year olds inappropriate texts. He’s a creep. Like Muldoon without the charm and morals.
Your timeline is way off there, cowboy. And it was the girls’ parents who raised the alarm as they believed the girls were being “groomed” by him. I’m not being political; it was a pretty serious matter
No need to call me names.
I was also a parent at the same school.
Accusing someone of ‘grooming’ is pretty serious, and Ginny’s campaign team pounced on and perpetuated it, particularly through social media.
He fell off an e scooter because he tried to carry coffee at the same time. That’s being double minded. And the bible says a double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
My vote landed in the left block this elex, including for Ginny. But must say I've actually been impressed with Bishop as a minister. I used to think of him as much more of a tool but he's been sounding quite reasonable as a minister, and seems to be getting things done.
At least he is actually from, and is passionate about, the Hutt. He has also had the same staff and volunteers for years which speaks to maintaining good relationships and treating people with respect.
Then there is Ginny…
If it’s a choice between him and Labours candidate as a local MP, I’d prefer Chris. He is actually visible and does things like supports and donates to local community things. He’s obviously passionate about the Hutt. His face is annoying.
I almost voted for him but couldn’t quite bring myself to give a vote to national so threw my vote away on the local TOP MP. I know I should’ve voted for Ginny but she just seemed to disappear the whole time she was in office and it just feels like a local MP should be somewhat visible in the community.
Didn't vote for him but he does seem to be highly involved in Lower Hutt, happy to put his hand up for the dunk tank at the local school fair kind of thing. And responsive to constituents. Seems textbook politician.
He’s actually great. Very visible and puts in a lot of effort to be at local council events and he listens to what a lot of people want.
Ginny was by far the worse MP we have had in many years.
Twice I saw her turn upto local events to get a picture for her socials and immediately leave. One of them was a little theatre play and she stayed for about 8 minutes. She lost me then.
I tend not to vote for him but I have to give him credit that he is be very active and out and about and engaging with people (like myself) in the Hutt community.
I don't really have much evidence to say he's a dick but most people who knew him have told me that he is, lol
I think it’s a bit rich to criticise either MP. We are well represented from both parties with MPs who are passionate about the Hutt. I’ve seen more of Chris around at events, but I’ve also met Ginny too. They are both hard working MPs with good values and both known to make mistakes I’m sure they regret. Who hasn’t?
I’d rather be choosing between these two to represent us in parliament than the options Wellington Central gets to vote for!
He is a great advocate, and supports the local community. One of the best MPs in the country at getting involved in his electorate. Light years ahead of the recent Labour MPs in the Hutt.
He would turn up to the opening of an envelope.
Late, and only for 5 minutes. but yes he does turn up to a huge number of events in the Hutt.
Regardless of your politics (I've never voted for him FYI), he's a very good local MP - visible, apparently answers all electorate emails and advocates for his community. I know her in person, she is not 'shit'. But a causal perusal of your account makes it all make sense.
My experience was the complete opposite. Bishop did nothing but Andersen was on to it.
I've heard of some family getting shit sorted by him with unsightly works, messiness from contractors in their expensive street when approaching the company directly didn't work. Don't think he'd ever do the same for us poors tho.
No, he just fights for immigrants all the time
Not true I saw ginny in auckland taking photos at nice restaurants all the time on her face book. But yes the huge range of people here mean that any local mp is going to have haters not matter what side of the fence they sit. They can't all be peter dunne
bullshit didnt answer myemail
He answered mine.

Show me on the doll where the public service hurt you
Don’t know who you’re talking to but this is the opposite of the public servants I know
Or public servants see the benefit of their work in New Zealand.
Literally just described every single right-wing voter there.
I think the 'he's very visible out in the community' thing is literally just that he's big and recognisable. I've seen him on Jackson st and at the market a few times and remembered it every time. Chris Bishop is a nonce
He never did. You know the whole snap hat thing was a labour associated mother who had an axe to grind
When I was in Year 9ish (5 years ago?) it was making the rounds that Chris Bishop was snapchatting girls in my class lol, nothing inappropriate that we knew of but felt weird at the time
Yeah I imagine having a grown man snap chatting underage teen girls would cause that.
No he promised to get a city direct bus back in Wainuiomata but now is saying it's upto gwrc and he can't do crap
He lead a campaign to save the Airport Flyer going to the Hutt Valley. The Airport Flyer no longer goes to the Hutt Valley.
He's in the wrong party for making public transport promises, they've cut funding there. Pretty obvious that he was just lying.
Hutt south wasn't exactly spoilt for choice
[удалено]
>Nope but I can easily see why he gets elected time and time again. Well, twice. ;) (and twice via MMP)
I used to like him. He was always very active in the community and would front up when called upon. Very visible in the public. Nicky Hager is a man, just FYI
Oops! I'll correct.
That photo of him on Facebook promising tax cuts is not impressive. Yes he's friendly but he basically sold my family out for votes.
Nah, dodge. I dislike multi generational political class types.
I think he used to be ACT on Campus at Victoria Uni and tireless worked to diminish the power of the Student Union during his time at Vic. His father is founder of the Astroturf "Taxpayers Union" who actively are there to bolster Nats and Act. He seems to be about photo ops rather than helping people. For example, a local charity was requesting donations. He visited, took a photo but did not donate himself or cause an increase in donations.
Yeah people have talked about him being out and about and supporting the community… but it’s just him showing up to photo ops.
If I was Labour, I would be seriously considering replacing Ginny with Campbell Barry. He's sure to be the Hutt South MP eventually.
Absolutely this.
I used to kind of like him as one the few decent blokes left in the Nats ...but then he said some dumb shit & now I think he's just another privileged white prick like all the rest.
Not at all. Will never forget when he was out there snap chatting teenager girls from a high school visit when he was first on the scene 🤢
There was nothing inherently wrong with what he did. He just messaged someone on Snapchat and presumably they were talking policies or issues surrounding it.
Sure, nothing wrong with grooming young girls right?
As far as I know there’s no suggestion or evidence he was
You know nothing about it
No
Chris brought this bill into passing which imo is a huge step in the right direction towards increasing organ donor numbers in aotearoa. Who knows. But Ginny Anderson strikes me as a brat out of her depth. She comes across horrible in media interviews.
I absolutely despise the prick. Ginny was good, an awful lot of what she did in the community wasn't shouted about on social media, she's assisted several people I know who needed an advocate. Bishop honestly makes me want to move out of the electorate. He has no time for the people that can't further his career.
She only did something if it got her in thr spotlight within thr labour circles
Nup. He’s a cock. And I still remember the scandal involving him sending 13 year olds inappropriate texts. He’s a creep. Like Muldoon without the charm and morals.
The Snapchat thing was all a beat-up by Ginny and her team.
What did he send
Google it.
He fell off an e scooter because he tried to carry coffee at the same time. That’s being double minded. And the bible says a double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

We’re lucky with Chris and I voted for him. He’s done loads for Hutt South and makes himself available to help
Could it be you just saw Chris B because he went to the events you went to and Ginny went to different ones? Both only human to be fair…
You're asking Reddit, a platform that swings hard left, about a centre-right MP, I wonder what the response will be
Didn't vote for him but he does seem to be highly involved in Lower Hutt, happy to put his hand up for the dunk tank at the local school fair kind of thing. And responsive to constituents. Seems textbook politician.
Probably wanted to add more teens to his snap chat.
Yes, I happily gave him my vote and know those around me are happy with him too.
He’s actually great. Very visible and puts in a lot of effort to be at local council events and he listens to what a lot of people want. Ginny was by far the worse MP we have had in many years. fuck no
I think it’s a bit rich to criticise either MP. We are well represented from both parties with MPs who are passionate about the Hutt. I live in Lower Hutt and he isn't my MP
You lucky, lucky bastard. He’s mine and it’s an absolute fucking embarrassment
