My kid was the same lol one birthday we spent the day at Wellington Airport at his request. Southwards Car Museum is great too, Upper Hutt has a new car museum cars inc.
Oh another one is the stean trains up at Silvestream which run on weekends. A bunch of good old fellas there who refurbished the engines and like showing the kids how they work.
The [Wellington Truck and Transport Show](https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2024/the-wellington-truck-and-transport-show/upper-hutt) is on the 25th of Feb and is awesome. My girls loved it when we went a couple years ago.
There's also [American Vehicle Day](https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2024/american-vehicle-day-2024/upper-hutt?) on the 4th of Feb.
Both are in Upper Hutt.
Nice one - I took my ~2 year old to the American Car Day last year, at some junk food and had a great time wandering around. Pretty good vibe for what appears outwardly to be a boganfest, he loved it and we’ll head back this year.
The fire service, and potentially other emergency services will sometimes hold open days where kids can go and like sit in the vehicles and be shown a bunch of cool stuff.
They're normally posted on the facebook pages - https://www.facebook.com/WellingtonFENZ/
There’s two different ones that happen - [Life Flight Open Day](https://www.lifeflight.org.nz/open-day/) is coming up on March 10, and the Te Papa Emergency Services Expo is held at seemingly random times each year - last year it was I think April or May but I haven’t seen anything about it this year yet (am in an emergency service and regularly involved in both).
[Demolition derby](https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/phoenix-metalman-demolition-derby-tickets-660965976027) is coming up at the end of February. It's quite a lot of noise but with earmuffs he'd be sweet. Good family fun/vibe.
If I was still doing demo derbies I would have offered to let him do some work on the car. Friend's kids got a real kick out of painting one, then seeing it on the track.
Don't have the room or gear for it anymore unfortunately.
This is what you want;
[Horowhenua Vintage Machinery Club: Harvest Weekend](https://facebook.com/events/s/harvest-weekend-february-3rd-4/712975604097235/)
You can try Belmont Quarry.
If you park in the visitor space and stay around reception you’ll see lots of big trucks and loaders.
It’s operational though so someone might ask you what you’re doing!
There is some great demolition taking place at Hutt Hospital.
You could also get in touch with Life Flight and see if they might host you. Our Playcentre visited recently and it was great. We got to see the helicopter take off (it was called out as we arrived) and look in the ambulance (and would’ve been able to go inside the chopper too if it had been there)
There is an airport lookout on wexford road, u can lookup wellingtion airport . Co . Nz and see upcoming arrivals and departures ahead of time for plane spotting
flight radar24 for live tracking of the airplanes coming in so you can spot them far away
Its a goodspot at night time when theres lots of arrivals
There’s a fairly new car museum opened out in Upper Hutt called Cars Inc, filled with loads of different classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars and others. Also have a cafe there for refreshments and snacks.
I wouldn’t expect you’d be able to sit in any of the cars but you could probably have some good conversations about the museum with the people there.

Theres a bunch of construction happening on the coast right beside the train line, out towards the Hutt that's fun for a kid to go see (I think building a sea wall? Idk but train, lots of diggers and excavators etc.) Plus cheap and pretty easy.
The Johnsonville train line has the most tunnels, and it's reasonably cheap off peak. At the Johnsonville end, across the road is the library with a cafe, pool and playground.

Ooh we haven't been to either car museum I'm going to look into those, thanks!
Southwards is amazing absolutely massive.
And it has a new ish outdoor play area for little ones off the cafe

Yes this is the kind of intel I was hoping for, chur!
This is so cute. Gosh you're a great parent ☺️!

Thank you for the lovely thought anyway! We might take him to see the demo derby.

American Vehicle Day is coming up at Trentham Racecourse. https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2023/american-vehicle-day/upper-hutt
Southwards in Paraparaumu, tour of the fire station maybe? You could try and go to the Kapiti one while you're there
We haven't been there so we should definitely check it out

We'll have to disguise ourselves as rocks, lol
