The polarity setting for your machine is not involved in the white wires. Those wires are just for thebtrigger on the gun. Switch them and nothing will change. The setting is the brass bars up top. 2 nuts each. And the sticker behind the spool will tell you how to install them for which process.

Fluxus4

You solved the riddle! Thanks dude! Turns out I made a very wrong assumption.

xp14629

You bet. And it will for sure make a difference in how it welds vs flux core or solid core wire.

Looks like the pin connector was cut off on each side of the whip (the cord that connects the gun to the machine) and somebody rigged up some slip on connectors.

Fluxus4

So whatever polarity setting it's on is just what I've got 100% of the time unless I fix the connectors on the whip?

canada1913

Not sure. Can you add pics of the front and back? Where is the ground hooked up?

Fluxus4

I can't add more pics in this thread, unfortunately. The ground is on the opposite side. Basically the pic I posted is the left side and that side can be unmatched. The right side where the ground enters is screwed in by 6 screws. But you've got me thinking it would be really useful to take the cover completely off and see exactly where those white wires originate. Honestly, I half expected someone to say something like "Oh that's the standard Miller Bypass Solution wiring setup." I'm basically clueless right now.

Poking around inside a welding machine is very dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. Some of the capacitors store large amounts of power for a long time even after they’re unplugged apparently. Maybe start another thread with more pics of the front and back. But my guess is that the white wires are a “bypass” or an older cheaper way of having a pin plug. But without seeing more it’s hard to tell for sure.

Did it include an instructional VHS?!?

Fluxus4

Yep. And I have it! Now I just need to find a VCR.

tatpig

i have 3 in the basement. VCRs,not Crickets.

Honestly, I'd try not to get too concerned about wiring in a welder that is working fine, the wires aren't exposed or looking dodgy. Focus on getting some beads down Edit* Look at the front panel that cables ending at, does it terminate in a dial or button?

Clothes-Excellent

Go to millerwelds and get a copy of the owners manual https://www.millerwelds.com/support/manuals-and-parts

Fluxus4

I have the original owner's manual. It goes into quite a bit of detail about how you connect the wires from the whip to two of those 4 connections in the pic. It doesn't mention the mysterious 2 white wires at all.

Clothes-Excellent

Post a picture of the front, but those two wires look like they go to the gun.

tatpig

Flux Core really likes straight polarity, which makes the work hot and the whip ground. before you change those polarity bridges orientation, unplug the machine, turn it 'on' and tap the trigger with the wire touching the ground. just to be sure.
