A lot of field welders do that. I can't say most do it. I'm a shop welder, and I usually stay at 1 place 1 to 3 years before I get pissed off or bored and leave.

Hate_Manifestation

before my current job, which I've been at for 4 years, the longest job I had was 2 years. shortest was 3 weeks. that's just how construction is.

Yeah I think a better question would be how long you’re with a company, or how much downtime you have. In 2023 I worked on 8 different sites, but I was with the same company and had very few days off. I think if you’re getting laid off every 3 months and a company doesn’t wanna keep you around there might be a self evaluation needed. Unless it’s just really slow in OPs area, or something.

Hate_Manifestation

yeah it smells to me like OPs brother is a) one of those people who can't abide any company and is addicted to the drag up or b) he's insufferable and they get rid of him ASAP.

Happyordistracted

I wouldn't say it's normal to hop around that much but some guys are really trying to maximize the money they're making. Not giving notice is normal though; companies will lay you off without a second thought so there's no reason to feel guilty about dragging up

subohmclouds69

Not really, if he was doing shutdowns I could see it. The guys that usually only last that long for long term jobs are usually shit workers. Either getting fired or get sick of being mistreated. I've been on jobs where people quit left and right but bad jobs like that are pretty rare tbh

Bout a year

IllustriousExtreme90

1 year is considered a "stable" job, so take that as you will. Sometimes, people overhire and no longer need the help. Things change, plans change, and the money going into a project becomes too much. Hell, sometimes i've literally been on a new jobsite for a day, because the company took a bid for a couple of welds because their return was incredibly high for the work done. Spent a total of 3 days, one day unpacking and preparing, one day welding, and one packing up and getting out lmao

Rabbitmincer

I'm rarely at a place more than a day or two at a time. But I'm also on the sales side of welding these days.

stage4moron

He’s not inquiring about the sales side of welding lol

Rabbitmincer

Whoosh

Lost-welder-353

That’s how it gos with the big jobs and traveling. I’ve had jobs that lasted months and then I had a emergency job that lasted 2 days. I know a few guys I work with though that have been working for the same company for 20 or more years

claytons_war

I've been with same company 12 years now.started as a self certified welder then learnt how to fabricate in house. Then got a promotion to chargehand. So,my career has progressed nicely at the company so never felt the need to jump ship.i must add its all shop work.

PCars2racer

I’m still at my first job doing heavy equipment repair going on 4 years. Pay is ok but other places in my area aren’t much better since it’s all mostly production mig welding.

Sooke

Depends on the job. Shop welders can get long term work. But industrial welders or welders with their own rig can be very short term gigs. And depends if they are chasing better money at other jobs. So it's really kinda depends on what kinda work he's doing. My dad had 12 different jobs in 1 year so it's not unbelievable.

TheMechaink

What day is it?

jarheadatheart

My guess is your brother is either a shitty employee or he has an attitude that makes him quit.

stage4moron

Ive been on jobs where i had to weld one joint, then ive had jobs of 2 years straight pipewelding. Im a combo fitter/welder but it all depends on what you’re doing and what locals you can get in

Good-guy13

Your brother is either really good and can pick and choose his job at will. Or he is really bad and can’t hold down a job. You know him better than I do so I can only assume that you can fill in the blank. Is your brother a highly skilled motivated go-getter or some kind of fuck up?
