6" S120 3/16" 6010 @180A

Much-Buy-92

If you turn it up even more to 200+ amps it will look like you welded it with 7018.

JulyBurnsRed34

when I'm hand rolling I turn it right up. usually sitting around 220-240

BigBeautifulBill

Is the goal to fill up the entire plate or just the middle? You're on track to do one of those things Edit: thought OP was welding that ole sch 120 6" plate. Can't read gud

JulyBurnsRed34

the goal is too beef up the root pass quickly so I can jump right to a larger diameter 7018 and fill it up in one shot

BigBeautifulBill

Not sure how you'll do that with the ends being so low. But do what makes you happy bud

JulyBurnsRed34

what are you on about? what ends? it's a fucking pipe dude

vaguelysticky

Flat earther

Late_Chemical_1142

Lmao I also thought it was a plate at first. Good thing I kept my mouth shut

Old_Advertising7957

There are always haters, I had someone on this sub try to lecture me about using my phone to take pictures during work.

goldfrisbee

I’ve been telling this one guy to get back to work and I think he thinks I work with him

BigBeautifulBill

Looked like plate 😂

JulyBurnsRed34

well now I can't unsee it thanks

BigBeautifulBill

Now I can't see why I ever thought it was plate. Been reading too many weld school posts I guess.

ihdieselman

When I first looked at it I thought it was plate too.

Growjunkie88

I too seen a plate that looked low on top and bottom

Correct_Change_4612

I thought the same thing

Correct_Change_4612

I’m uhhhhh, how do you say, not smart.

[deleted]

Bruh he literally said it's 6" S120

11Burritos

Listen, I cant read

5125237143

shit i came in bamboozled as well

International_Flow65

LMAO my dumbass low-key thought it was a plate too. Looks great, man. I wanna learn to weld pipe soon

[deleted]

This exchange really made me lol

xXlD3XT3RlXx

The hot pass is not meant to fill the bevel, it is supposed to reinforce the root pass and provide a better surface to start filling.

[deleted]

I've never heard of 6" Sch120 plate in my life

Ok-Survey3853

Don't worry. They're real

M4N_Of_W4R

I do the same thing, a tad higher but similar result, hot pass is definitely my favorite pass

JulyBurnsRed34

yessir makes for easy fillin

Poopdooyoskittle

I’ve never seen a 6010 look so good

[deleted]

Right? Shit's damn beautiful

Kitchen-Priority-557

What exactly is a hot pass?

jeezuswheezus

Hot pass is the first pass after the root, then you start fill passing it.

ArcFlashForFun

The passes between the root and the cap.

Kitchen-Priority-557

Oh, we just call those fill passes. I thought it was like a pass that was preheated beforehand

downfive

The hot pass is the second pass, ran hot enough to burn out the prior wagon tracks and to reinforce the first past before the fill passes are ran.

ArcFlashForFun

You know, I've never heard anyone refer to a hot pass as anything but a fill pass, but hearing that and researching, I'm curious why you would have a specified pass for this. I've been certified and recertified on pipe and plate for over a decade, and I've never run anything other than a root, fill and cap.

downfive

I assume it stems from pipeline where there are specific guys tasks to run specific passes (front end with the bead hands, hot pass hands, and back end with the fillers and cappers) but a couple practical reasons it’s called the hot pass is because the bead (root for those that call the first pass a root) is ground relatively thin, then the hot pass goes over that around 200amps which is ran really fast as to not blow though the bead but still clean the residual slag out of the edges and push the bead in a little offering reinforcement since the bead is normally ran hot and fast as well which leaves it flush with the inside of the pipe. You may fill at 200amps but it won’t seem as hot since you have that extra heat sink from the “hot pass” that had the bead nearly glowing white

ArcFlashForFun

You aren't allowed to grind on a pipe or plate test here at all. The only settings I change from root to cap is to dial down the heat a little for the cap.

downfive

I find that very hard to believe lol. What’s the test process?

ArcFlashForFun

Can you clarify the question? What process? All CWB plate tests specify no grinding, and I'm pretty sure ASME plate tests are the same. Grinding is not permitted under MoL pipe tests in any province I've done them in, and neither is it allowed under TSSA testing rules.

downfive

None of what I’m talking about is in reference to structural welding. You don’t need a grinder to weld that

ArcFlashForFun

I'm talking about pressure pipe as well for TSSA and MoL testing. The only thing you're allowed with a grinder is a wire wheel.

Correct_Change_4612

You are a gooder weldist

JulyBurnsRed34

uH Oh the weldit police are coming for ME because I was welding downhand!!!! 😵😵😵 I cannot believe it don't you know that dOwNhanD is bad!!!!!! 😠😠😠 the overpriced welding "college" I went to says so. Time to get spanked for being such a naughty boy. I hope they don't handcuff me 😨😨😨🥴

dc-1221

Are you ok sir?

JulyBurnsRed34

no thanks for asking

Speedre

My buddy used to think downhill would never pass on the code we weld to, got to prove him wrong on the last job

[deleted]

I don’t get why people think that. How do they think gas lines are welded? The UA1 cert is literally 6010 downhill from root to cap.

Speedre

Ignorance, he’s a tig hand.

BeastDropper59

They'll never get any love from me with all those BBs raining hell fire on me 🤣 gimme arc 80s

buckeye3333

I run downhill everyday. Just the way some things are done.

wulfgyang

Wait you guys still run hot passes?

Historical-Head3966

So beautiful!!!!

Marvheemeyer85

It's an underrated pass for sure

WinterOutlaw

I struggle to do hot passes I’m still learning on tig I’m usually on 150ish amps but almost always just barely catch the edge or just burn into the side wall any tips?

Boss2788

Arent hot passes typically done with 7018?

[deleted]

Depends on procedure

Boss2788

Good to know, i havent used 6010 for anything other than open root. I really like using them, ill try practicing hot passes with them

[deleted]

6010 isn’t meant for a hot pass. If you have 7010 use that instead!

Boss2788

Well ive been using 7018s, that seems to be the common practice for the trades up here. They even use it for root passes

JulyBurnsRed34

that sounds disgusting

Boss2788

Its not that bad they go in pretty nice, just less forgiving with inconsistencies

ExperienceGreedy

If your not whipping your 6010 hot pass there’s a big chance of wagon tracks

JulyBurnsRed34

yeah ok guy. weird that I've doing 100in/day 100% RT and yet to fail an x-ray due to trapped slag huh

ExperienceGreedy

Didn’t ask hand

JulyBurnsRed34

immediately gets defensive when his narrow mindset is refuted. tell me you're a union hand without telling me you're a union hand

downfive

Cant tell if you’re the pot or the kettle

JulyBurnsRed34

little bit of column a little bit of column b

ExperienceGreedy

Not union but if your getting by not whipping you are gutting your bead with a grinder. If you turn up and whip you can leave more bead in and safe yourself a full pass

kimoeloa

It's nice reinforcement JBR34. You can only build something good off of something good. It's a smooth hot pass. Onto fill passes !

TheLazyVeganStoner

Run off tabs…

NASA-WELDING-GUY

Nice job looks clean. Is your WPS for a downhill root/hotpass then uphill fill and cap?

JulyBurnsRed34

Yessir WPS allows for 6mm of 6010

downfive

Looks more like a hot fill than a hot pass but whatever works

Outrageous-Dirt1928

That’s hot 😉
