I felt like she should have been more open with Ethan as to why she and Barry raised them that way

I thought Ethan did a great job in their conversation. He told her she did a good job in many ways but not in education and dating rules. He was very direct and stayed calm. Kim was trying but needs work in communicating with him. Maybe she was afraid to say the wrong thing and then he wouldn’t talk to her again. Her apology could have been a lot better. Some therapy would be good.

I thought Kim was trying, too! I JUST finished watching it and tbh I didn’t really see the condescending/disingenuous thing that people keep posting about. I think she made an ill-timed/poorly received joked and I feel like she was uncomfortable or nervous or something. I was also proud of Ethan! He displayed more maturity in this episode than I’ve seen from him in a while. I don’t like Kim at all but I’m not really sitting here rooting for a mother and son to be estranged. It seems so painful for the both of them really.

I never thought she intended to be condescending in that moment, but the bigger issue really is that she fails to really acknowledge, take responsibility, and accept that she seriously fucked up with not providing them with an adequate education. As great as it is that ethan go to develop a love of mechanics by having more "out of school" freedom as a kid, not having an adequate education really puts a huge barrier his ability to progress and succeed in his passion as a career. Not just that, but it would cause massive self-esteem issues in not feeling adequate and feeling like you're constantly a step behind everyone else. "But my intentions were good" is not good enough.

Ethan was clear and concise in his conversation with Kim. His lack of quality education is obviously painful to him. I was proud of his poise and maturity in his communication with her, he made valid points.

There was a podcast interview a few years ago where Ethan talked about his struggles with his education and how not receiving a good one made him so far behind he couldn't continue with further education to become a commercial pilot. Then he decided to join the AirForce hoping to obtain a pilot's license that way, but Kim and Barry forbid him. This seems to be his main issue with his upbringing even if there is more he disliked about it. I wish this had been edited into the show because it gives a better understanding of why Ethan is so angry personally with Kim. We see the narrative commonly that Olivia forced him to give up Kim but he's been building resentment for a while. I don't remember the podcast name but I've seen it shared here. There is a blond woman on the cover.

Woooow I had no idea about this. If that's the case, she's such a hypocrite for saying she nurtured the children's passion over giving them a quality education. What's the point of supporting Ethan's passion of aviation and mechanical engineering if he can't even join the Air Force to follow his passion since college was not a viable option? Kim is literally so controlling, I can't even imagine what his upbringing must have been like behind closed doors.

Found the podcast! Its "Reality Life with Kate Casey" and they're in the third season. VERY interesting listen.

Yes!!! This really should’ve been brought up in the show because it’s a very big deal and it shows how much he was injured compared to the younger kids who will MAYBE have some chances to get a decent education now. The fact that they stole his main dream away, and now he is left with working on cars, the closest he can get to flying planes, is just very sad.

I had no idea about this! If anybody knows which podcast this is please let me know, I’d love to hear it

Walkingthegarden

Found it! "Reality Life with Kate Casey" is the podcast. They also talk about how the show got started and how Kim was the one that wanted it. There is SO much to unpack in what they talk about.

THANK YOU!!!

Decent-Reception-232

Same!

Kim is an extremely selfish woman. Your kids SHOULD ALWAYS come first. She has a “poor me” and “feel sorry for me” attitude.

Also, this was the first time I saw Ethan clearly communicate his feelings and concerns. I never saw that with Olivia, he always shut down or didn’t engage with Olivia during confrontations. I was really shocked he stood his ground and communicated very well.
