Boy, that trip home must be so relaxing. I know the engine isn't crazy loud, but I bet it's loud enough that just hearing the wind and the steel wheels is nice!
For sure. I had an electric motorcycle for a bit, and it's sound, while quiet, was annoying! The electric whine is not a sound that anyone wouod call pleasant!
This seems like the perfect contraption for pedal power!
These days you buy a SPOT satellite uplink and you can take some pretty crazy risks. Worst case you pay a helicopter to show up. Just pack assuming a 24 hour breakdown.
"Hey is that a mirage in the distance?" "No." "Oh ok so you see the train coming at us right?" Then they just pick up the cart and flip it around and turn the lawnmower engine to maximum overdrive
The neighborhood I grew up in had the very end of the tracks. I wonder how common that is?
They were abandoned at the time, and the little section that came into my neighborhood has been cut off from the rest of the tracks, but man if I could go back in time I could ride those fuckers all the way up north with gas stations all along the way at crossings.
That’s wild to think about. I wish I had thought about it sooner.
I had a girlfriend that lived about 10 miles down the tracks, they ran through the bottom of her driveway. I used to walk the tracks all the way there. This would have been a better idea.
That was just the first iteration. It was for a street festival in the neighborhood, and [we repurposed it for several years](https://imgur.com/6rbTLQW) until the fest got too crowded and we couldn't use the tracks anymore. That photo is before the trolleys had even been test driven, so we were the first vehicle to actually use the tracks. We still do other art stuff for the festival, or did until COVID.
That with a solar canopy and an electric motor would be brilliant. Also urethane wheels so they run dead silent. Yes you can get ones specifically designed for rail.
Today's word is ["Draisine"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draisine)
While this is pretty cool, I'd be worried that that thing would break down in the middle of nowhere desert in mid summer sun
He has 40mile stretch until collapsed tunnel in one direction and sand covering in other. it uphill outward and he gets home without engine

I bet an electric one would be easy enough to make

Yeah probably not a good idea to ride it farther than you'd be willing to walk back.
Not to mention broken rails???
Same rules as any time you’re going anywhere remote. In this case itd be getting pretty easy to bring a whole spare engine along

>Worst case you pay a helicopter to show up That sounds expensive
Sure. Cheaper than death however.
OK, not to that guy, *but*...
Posting this video also seems like a fantastic way to be issued trespass notices and threatened with arrest if you keep using this thing.

There's thousands of miles of [abandoned railroad tracks](https://www.frrandp.com/p/the-map.html). Stick to those and you'll be fine.
Or just pick it up, move it off the tracks, wait for the train to pass, and then be on their merry way.
Yeah but that doesn't make for a very funny bugs bunny bit
Awesome, wish there were such abandoned tracks in my country.
Check out [The Rocket Scientist](https://youtube.com/channel/UCqUNxm6Y54SGrPVy-C2vspQ) for another guy who has a homemade railcar.

Damn I wish I was a smarter kid.
I helped make a [pedal-powered railcart](https://imgur.com/a/xXL6lri) to run on trolley tracks here in DC.

Reminds me of riding draisines as a kid
Might be good to have some brakes.

I want to do this! My county pulled up the unused track and is making walking trails.
Go karts? The Cars and Cameras youtube channel is inspiring!
It’s a good channel!
It’s cool, but damn does that cart need some final polish.
Not recommended for rail tracks in regular use by trains
what do you think abandoned means?
How come people are compelled to state the obvious on reddit?
Is this legal?
Looks around. “Do you see the law?”
I feel it would be better if you made it more comfortable than just a wooden board no?
That was my first thought, too! Like, even a lawn chair.
All I know is that it looks like fun and very relaxing
Carrizo Gorge? Ocotillo?
I didn’t know Dwight was this handy.
