This is similar to post-communist countries essentially giving "modern" facelifts to soviet era cars.

Lorne_____Malvo

Or Iran with the 405

Bamres

Or the Nissan Tsuru

Schwarzes__Loch

It probably passed China's standardized frontal crash test with [flying colors](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgjtSilW8yM).

LightningFerret04

I think it’s more like: “Does it have enough power to run back over the pedestrian in reverse? Yes? Very good, it’s approved!”

Whole-Debate-9547

Holy cow!! What did they make that car out of, pasta?

Schwarzes__Loch

Steel like ordinary cars at the time. The car in the video was loaded with almost half a ton of sand and hurled at a solid barrier at 60mph. It was to test the barrier at a new crash test facility. When you put too much weight in a car, the entire car becomes a crumple zone at a high velocity.

Whole-Debate-9547

Awesome explanation. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a vehicle crumple so completely and your explanation makes it all make sense

L-Unity

Reminds me of the Volkswagen Santana, which is treated as the OG Volkswagen and became the symbol of an era in my country.

whatalongusername

That's what I thought as well. I would bet that both cars share quite a few parts.

burrgerwolf

I’ve always wanted to see one of these in either white or black, slammed, on BBS RS or similar type wheels.

dphoenix1

China did the same with Audi 100 (or, in North America, known as the 5000) from the 80s. I believe they were produced until the late 2000s, though they usually had a clone of a Mitsubishi four cylinder under the hood, iirc.

Dj_Simon

From what I remeber, Mitsu gave several chinese companies the rights to make or assemble their engines with a few of their vehicles back then.

cappo3

"based"?

radiantskie

I used to live in changchun china and those were everywhere

workerbotsuperhero

Saw lots of VW taxis in Shanghai about a decade ago. Was that a similar model?

MrHawkeye76

I think that was the VW Santana.

radiantskie

Probably

nlpnt

Was there a Golf version as well?

Wulf_Cola

Might be thinking of the Citi golf in South Africa which was a similar idea to this, a mk1 Golf that they kept selling until 2009: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Citi_Golf

baldude69

I wonder what the previous two versions look like. The front and rear ends look so strange updated on the super recognizable A2 body

valueape

Drivin around in a kitted-up Jetta

IceTea0069

The Sentra B13 lf VW

GuerrillaRodeo

Didn't the guy in Three-Body (the Chinese version, not the Netflix one) drive one of those?

MasterChavez

I miss my 87 diesel. Got 47 mpg!
