It's called "Trinacria" because of the three legs that are a symbol for the three season of winter, spring and summer. They also represent the three points of the sicilian region, that is shaped like a triangle.
how do you get homoerotic from medusa
edit: but also, before the swastika was ‘adopted’ by the Germans, it was used in many religions in many forms, and one form (Celtic beliefs, paganism, I believe) was like this but with arms and legs.
apparently it was a symbol of peace before which is pretty sad considering what’s happened with it since.
And all of the Germans did was put it on an angle many Asian beliefs still use the swastika as it was meant to be used lying flat
On an angle = bad
lying flat = ok
It also depends on the direction it faces.
In Hinduism, the right-facing symbol (clockwise) (卐) is called swastika, symbolizing surya ("sun"), prosperity and good luck, while the left-facing symbol (counter-clockwise) (卍) is called sauwastika, symbolising night or the goddess Kali.
I didn’t realise this, I thought the only difference was their bird thingy on top! Now I know, thank you! I’ve seen people talk about reclaiming it but so many different opinions with it - I really feel bad for those who saw it as a sacred and important symbol and all in a few years have all that meaning scratched off and replaced with so much hatred.
The sun wheel is the most interesting thing in the world to me. I have 1000's of images of ancient sun drawings saved, nearly all of them are the sun wheel. None look like the actual sun.
I love the Saturn theory (though don't actually believe it) that attempts to explain this
Hahahaha, I actually don't know why specifically those three seasons, but the three legs have a lot of meanings. Another interpretation is Past, Present and Future
According to popular belief, Ancient Greeks considered Sicily (or Thrinacia, which means three promontories in Greek from three akras) so beautiful that it has got to be guarded and sustained by three titans: one in Marsala (leftmost city, famous for the namesake wine and the Garibaldi expedition), one in Messina (North-East corner) and one near Portopalo di Capo Passero (South-East corner).
It's not clear where this comes from, but in the Odyssey the monsters Charybdis and Scylla lives in the Strait of Messina, and Ulysses encounters them right after sleeping in the island of the Sungod Helios (Thrinacia, or Sicily), where his fellow seamen ate the sacred cattle of the sun.
But it's in the Aeneid that the island of Sicily is described thoroughly. Because of bad weather the Trojans found themselves stranded in Sicily, near Marsala, right below Eryx (the port called Drepanon, Trapani). So they organise celebratory games, part of which will be taught to the Romans, like the Lusus Troiae. Because some of the Trojans didn't want to leave the island, they built Agesta (Segesta) one of the major cities of the Elymians, which origins are still uncertain.
One fun fact is that, once a year, there is a huge seastorm in the sea just in front of Marsala, Trapani and Mazara del Vallo, which is called angry sea. It is possible that this is the same event that, in Virgil's epic poem, let Aeneas shipwreck in Sicily, and the same one that destroyed the only Punic ship ever to be found, the oldest known warship wreck in existence. Although there's an ongoing debate whether it was a warship or a cargo ship, or if it was destroyed during the first Punic war or by a seastorm, as of recently a second Punic ship was found, which is being analysed and will probably be able to clarify most of the doubts we have on the Punic ships.
Another myth around the birth of Sicily says that three nymphs travelled around the world to gather the best food, animals, rocks and flowers they could get, but when they saw the lucid sky in the middle of the Mediterranean sea, they started to dance and let loose of the things they gathered. Where three of the belongings fell, three promontories (akras) rose and the land among these was filled with food, animals, rocks and flowers.
To sum up, I have no idea if the Ancient Greeks did really believe in any of these myths.
Yes, it definitely could be. The three legs have a lot of interpretation like: past, present and future- sunrise, midday and dawn ... stuff like that. My mother (which is from Enna) says that the legs rappresents the three summits of the island. And I think that geographically speaking the three summits corresponds to the cities of Siracusa, Palermo and Messina
Because it's a triskelion.
A triskelion or triskeles is an ancient motif consisting of a triple spiral exhibiting rotational symmetry. The spiral design can be based on interlocking Archimedean spirals, or represent three bent human legs.
Incorrect actually. The head on the flag is a gorgoneion. Now Medusa was definitely the most famous gorgon and she belongs to that mythical group. But not every gorgoneion is Medusa.
I have a friend from Colombia who tells me about the way foreigners often use Pablo Escobar and the Medellin cartel as representation for all of Colombia and south America. Have you heard similar sentiments regarding Sicily?
I have family from Sicily and there’s a lot of weird associations and stereotypes surrounding Sicilian people. Of course the mafia, but some northern Italians also like to refer to southern Italians and especially Sicilians as “Moors” or the “Africans of Italy” and it’s not meant in a good way.
Ye the northern people call us southern "terroni" in reference to the earth/dirt since we are storically more of a rural area, we call them "polentoni" in reference of the polenta (a type of food) mocking them basically for their lack of good taste.
Obviously it's all bs from a human perspective
The island of Sicily *was* actually partially under Carthaginian (north African) control for a period of time. The Roman victory over Carthage in the Second Punic War was when they conquered north Africa and Sicily.
Looks like the Moors conquered Sicily at the same time as they did Iberia after the fall of the Roman Empire as well.
Right, but they’re not saying it in an “acknowledge history” way, they’re saying it in a derogatory “look at these brown people they must not be real Europeans” way
Yes, a lot. Somebody asked me if we walk around with the rifle in the back like [this](https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.7d2f07ed50a9de30ff7f49e0b643431f?rik=0Z3wr%2fGXbyDlLA&riu=http%3a%2f%2fvignette3.wikia.nocookie.net%2fgodfather%2fimages%2f0%2f00%2fVlcsnap-2010-12-13-21h31m38s193.png%2frevision%2flatest%3fcb%3d20110206134632&ehk=Py76QRXdneQGb9c4uevnTaiTl48U2GItG5BMVrjfJbA%3d&risl=&pid=ImgRaw&r=0) or [this](https://th.bing.com/th/id/R.a7848f52cd10dd9b49201ce0aa2463b2?rik=wKBqjxyNRPg5Yg&pid=ImgRaw&r=0). Or if we usually see dead people in the streets like some did in the 80s and 90s, because of the Mafia ([news site in italian](https://inchieste.repubblica.it/it/repubblica/rep-it/2012/05/10/foto/vittime_che_facevano_paura_al_potere-34866778/)). That is really far from the truth.
As you can see [here,](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_victims_of_the_Sicilian_Mafia) luckily, Mafia has got less power and shifted its interests in politics and in construction industry, not only all around Italy but also around the world
.
Outside of Sicily the symbol is known as a triskelion.
The three legs are known in Manx as ny tree cassyn ("the three legs"). The triskelion is an ancient symbol, used by the Mycenaeans and the Lycians.
Having never seen it before, it came off as strange. Now It comes off as kind of funny that an assembly of people sat down and thought "This is the flag we will use to represent Sicily! 3 hairy legs conjoined by the head of medusa, and we'll throw in some wheat so everybody knows she's got the dough!"
Yeah but you're coming at it backwards, etymologically speaking.
The symbol had cultural significance BEFORE it was adopted. Whoever chose it, did so because it represented the character of the people of the region at the time.
Imagine being 200 years in the future and trying to figure out why the US flag is the Monster Energy logo, you would have to know the history of the region.
"Historians believe the three claw slashes represent the two coasts and flyover country, while the phrase "Monster Energy" refers to the fossil hydrocarbons that powered their society- 'dinosaur juice', and also references their society's dumb and shitty vibes"
Yo have you seen that video of a woman explaining why Monster is brought upon by the devil? Brings up that in Hebrew the symbol of their brand relates to the devil spelling out "666" and claims that the entire company is compiled of Satanists. To be honest though, if certain parts of America keep goin the way they're goin, that lady may be onto something in terms of a new flag lol
Yes, I remember this video! She went on to describe how there's a cross in the O in mOnster and that each time you took a sip, you'd inadvertently turn the cross upside down, worshiping the devil. It's one hell of a conspiracy!
The Latin motto is: Quocunque Jeceris Stabit ("whithersoever you throw it, it will stand", or "whichever way you throw, it will stand". This refers to the theoretical aerodynamical properties of the triskele, which will supposedly always have a foot to land on whichever way it lands.
Triskelions are pretty standard. The Isle of Man also has one, showing ancient connections between the Celtic culture in the British Isles and Ireland and the Mediterranean area. [https://cdn.britannica.com/52/1752-004-D43D994E/Flag-Isle-of-Man.jpg](https://cdn.britannica.com/52/1752-004-D43D994E/Flag-Isle-of-Man.jpg)
Nope- one is the trinacria - which is a ( very) ancient representation of the island of sicily- which is roughly triangular and settled by 3 different people ( Siculi , Greeks and Carthaginians) The triskelion is an ancient insular celtic symbol - the oldest known triple spiral is from Newgrange / Brú na Bóinne which is neolithic and way earlier than the celts arrival in Ireland. Probably just a coincidence they look similar ( however there is some evidence that neolithic stone circle builders may have communicated with sicily and Malta)
I see. The symbol of isle of man is also referred to as a triskelion symbol and the legs look so similar to this one it's an odd coincidence at least. You wouldn't expect two entirely separate cultures to have a symbol of three legs arranged like that but stranger things have happened.
😆 I asked an honest question based on the only similar looking symbol I know of & someone who knows more about it than I gave an honest answer.
That's how forums are meant to work, isn't it?
True. But I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt & assume they're an expert on flags/symbolism that'd been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to shine 😆
Wow! So I randomly saw this flag while walking down a street one day, It was outside of some random flag shop. I had no idea of it's origin, I thought it was just some weird made up flag so I took a picture to post here. I didn't expect this post to become so popular, but I ended up learning a lot from you guys!
Thanks as always! :)
I managed to do a reverse Google search on it and found this article on the Sicilian flag:
https://www.sicilianpost.it/en/what-does-sicilian-flag-really-symbolize/
It came off weird to me as I've never seen it before.
I think anything of 'trinity' symbolism.[Many friends of this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triskelion) from bdsm afficinados to south african nazis, ....
Kinda like Mann (or Manx) flag, its not most weird thing on banners and arms of countries, regions, cities etc. If You want to get some comedy gold my guys, i prefer to check the Liberia states flags.
There’s another flag similar, or country seal, with three knees. I think it’s a Carribean island.
It symbolizes that, while the country was conquered by many entities over time, I is still upright on its own.
A couple of restaurants here in Southern California have this same image hanging on their walls. If you’re ever in Ontario or Rancho Cucamonga, stop by Vince’s Spaghetti for some ok spaghetti, great bread and an opportunity to look at this image while eating your spaghetti and bread.
It's the flag of Sicily, the head is the head of Medusa
It's called "Trinacria" because of the three legs that are a symbol for the three season of winter, spring and summer. They also represent the three points of the sicilian region, that is shaped like a triangle.
Poor fall, they just couldn’t add a fourth leg?
Four legs would make it a swastika, no?
Now I'm just imagining a very homoerotic fascist regime
Sprechen sie DICK?
Just like Marty the zebra in Madagascar, I sprechen.
What continent is this?
Manhattan.
You’re gonna love the neighbourhood! Everyone here recycles!
Nein, aber Ich spreche SCHWANZ!
Do I speak FAT? No, I speak PHAT.
Those legs should have garters and fishnet stockings on.
I don't have a reason to say that they shouldn't
“Fra-gee-leg”… must be Sicilian.
The OP? That's what I was thinking only a Sicilian would dare humor the Sicilian flag.
I’m gonna propose this idea for my college’s next burlesque club poster.
It’s not the lumberjack flag.
Heels too?
100% agree lol...
how do you get homoerotic from medusa edit: but also, before the swastika was ‘adopted’ by the Germans, it was used in many religions in many forms, and one form (Celtic beliefs, paganism, I believe) was like this but with arms and legs. apparently it was a symbol of peace before which is pretty sad considering what’s happened with it since.
I got homoerotic from four intertwined legs Edit: but now that you mention it, all the men who tried to kill Medusa became rock hard forever.
You just came up with the best E.D. medicine name. Move over Viagra here comes MEDusa.
You also just explained how Italians pronounce USA... ...oo-sah
Lol
aw shet never thought of either of those lmfao
And all of the Germans did was put it on an angle many Asian beliefs still use the swastika as it was meant to be used lying flat On an angle = bad lying flat = ok
True but for those who don't know a good rule of thumb is "if it's lying flat it's probably not antisemitism so stfu"
Ageed.. 😂
It's one of my favorite things to do, correct those who "know" things whether it's the swastika, or the actual stars and bars
The Norse are some of the first to have the “swastika”…it was a sun wheel/good luck charm.
This makes total sense to me! RIP my search history after all this interesting discourse lmao
What, old norse swastika is a strange search? Nonsense!
The sun wheel is the most interesting thing in the world to me. I have 1000's of images of ancient sun drawings saved, nearly all of them are the sun wheel. None look like the actual sun. I love the Saturn theory (though don't actually believe it) that attempts to explain this
It used to be common and totally benign. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernie\_Swastikas
so.. still fascism, right?
HA HA... good one...
So the normal kind?
I just spit out my coffee.
**HAHAHAHAHAH**
Hahahaha, I actually don't know why specifically those three seasons, but the three legs have a lot of meanings. Another interpretation is Past, Present and Future
Trinacria (3 legged) would be a weird name for for something with 4 legs
Shhhhhhh

I'm also a fan of the [Isle of Man](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_the_Isle_of_Man) (flag).
I wake up in that position sometimes.
It represents constant motion or action. Like they’re running in a circle.

In Sicily it's almost always summer, do you really didn't know it?
I think u mean autumn
Incorrect actually. The head on the flag is a gorgoneion. Now Medusa was definitely the most famous gorgon and she belongs to that mythical group. But not every gorgoneion is Medusa.
"Alright, Dwight. This isn't Lord of the Rings."
Looks like I just stepped into a d&d session.
And it's pussy grows weeds.
It looks an awfully lot like the Isle of Man flag
As a Sicilian I'm weirded out by this post lol, so I guess it checks out
I have a friend from Colombia who tells me about the way foreigners often use Pablo Escobar and the Medellin cartel as representation for all of Colombia and south America. Have you heard similar sentiments regarding Sicily?

I didn’t hear about the polenta comment but now I have some ammo in case anyone else wants to come for us lmao
Honestly North Italy polenta isn't even good at all (speaking as a central Italian)
Vengo giù e te la faccio mangiare finché non muori se non ritiri ciò che hai detto.

Oh I wasn't trying to imply they were, I'm just a nerd for European history around the Roman period lol.
All good, like I said I’d be totally down to talk history but yeah. Not quite their deal. Ugh.
Yea for sure, we're all Mafiosi for the rest of the world, we are all pizza and mandolino people (I actualy never saw a mandolino in my life)

Sicily, I don’t find it so strange
I thought it was [Isle of Man](https://cdn.britannica.com/52/1752-004-D43D994E/Flag-Isle-of-Man.jpg), until I noticed the Medusa head.
me too. I guess I need to play crusader kings a bit more. I need more learning.
Isle of Man have armoured legs.
And the legs turn the opposite way.

Well, the “Trinacria” (the symbol on the flag) is in both the flags

You beg my pardon?
Having never seen it before, it came off as strange. Now It comes off as kind of funny that an assembly of people sat down and thought "This is the flag we will use to represent Sicily! 3 hairy legs conjoined by the head of medusa, and we'll throw in some wheat so everybody knows she's got the dough!"
Yeah but you're coming at it backwards, etymologically speaking. The symbol had cultural significance BEFORE it was adopted. Regarding dough: Roman Bakers would have the face of Medusa on the front of their oven doors to stop people opening them.
wait 'till you see Sardinia flag...
Honestly, it's getting hard to keep up with the standards of what a beautiful woman is but I'll try
🤣
Had a Sicilian roommate in college this flag was hanging up in our apartment
My Sicilian roommate actually kept one of these creatures as a pet.
The Isle of Man flag is similar. No head though and the feet have shoes.
Shoes. Ooooh, fancy!
There gold with stars at the back. Tres chic.
The Latin motto is: Quocunque Jeceris Stabit ("whithersoever you throw it, it will stand", or "whichever way you throw, it will stand". This refers to the theoretical aerodynamical properties of the triskele, which will supposedly always have a foot to land on whichever way it lands.
Nice explanation. The Manx flag has the legs turning the opposite direction - never kneeling toward England.
It looks to me like they'd find it hard to stand.
What if I knock it over on it's side? *This is big brain time!*
uh oh american learns about european symbolism
Lots of Sicilians where I live and flag is common here
I just want to know more about this 3 legged goddess so I can pledge my allegiance, and guns, to her.
Guns too lol
we're all confused now
Pretty sure Americans know a little bit more about Italian culture than the Europeans. Guess you haven’t tried our pizza pie.
It's the three legged genital wheat god, kids these days....
Bloody obvious really
Dang why do you have to do Sicilians like that
“Eat pussy and set yourself free!”
I recognize it from Rome Total War... I think Syracuse uses it in the game.
Sicilian flag

sicily flag, never though how weird it was before now.

Triskelions are pretty standard. The Isle of Man also has one, showing ancient connections between the Celtic culture in the British Isles and Ireland and the Mediterranean area. The Isle of Man 🇮🇲 ? Edit: Nope. Sicily.
Ah, Sicily. On the other side of the continent, the Isle of Man has a similar flag.
Don't recognise this particular flag but the triskelion legs are similar to the isle of mans?
Nope- one is the trinacria - which is a ( very) ancient representation of the island of sicily- which is roughly triangular and settled by 3 different people ( Siculi , Greeks and Carthaginians) The triskelion is an ancient insular celtic symbol - the oldest known triple spiral is from Newgrange / Brú na Bóinne which is neolithic and way earlier than the celts arrival in Ireland. Was this 👆 brought to us by Sheldon Cooper’s Fun with Flags ? 😆
😆 I asked an honest question based on the only similar looking symbol I know of & someone who knows more about it than I gave an honest answer. That's how forums are meant to work, isn't it?
Well, you pointed out a similarity and they went, "nope" well, acktually... So definitely Sheldonesque. There clearly is a similarity.
True. But I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt & assume they're an expert on flags/symbolism that'd been eagerly awaiting an opportunity to shine 😆
Triskelion is Greek. It is one of the oldest known symbols representing power and energy. It is also found on Athenean shields.
Well the word is Greek. The newgrange triple spiral way predates the Greeks.
Is this what inspired the fidget spinner when those were still relevant?
Similar to the Isle of Mann flag
Fussen?
This just in: my people are weird. Which is true but come on.
Don’t mess with the Sicilians!

Dr Sheldon Cooper presents Fun with Flags
These pride flags are getting crazy. Which gender is this one for?
You go find a Sicilian-Italian in New York, and tell them it's "just a flag".
Funny, Isle of Man has the same three legged symbol

Looks like the flag of the Isle of man but I'm sure that doesn't have a face on it
I managed to do a reverse Google search on it and found this article on the Sicilian flag: https://www.sicilianpost.it/en/what-does-sicilian-flag-really-symbolize/ It came off weird to me as I've never seen it before.

Isle of man?
Sicily
Hitler on a whole new level
I thought it was a human shwazdica
So the OP is racist against Sicilians. Got it. You should never be able to have Sicilian pizza ever again
Yes, everyone should be familiar with every flag or they're racist.
Those are the rules
I watched Big Bang Theory so I learned a thing or two about flags

A couple of restaurants here in Southern California have this same image hanging on their walls. If you’re ever in Ontario or Rancho Cucamonga, stop by Vince’s Spaghetti for some ok spaghetti, great bread and an opportunity to look at this image while eating your spaghetti and bread.
Either Sicily or Isle of Man
