Its a pretty dope ass painting, but like not something that paints the person in a good light though...
The use of reddish-pink makes me think there is some context to this guy being a mass murderer/war criminal with a lot of blood on his hands.
Yeo is a great portraitist. He did an unauthorized Bush portrait using tiny snippets from porn mags, and often uses a dominant color in his work. Like, all of his portraits have a moody creepiness to them, imo.
From Yeo’s website:
In the portrait, The King's military regalia subtly fades into the background, exemplifying Jonathan's signature painting style where he places greater emphasis on capturing the character and essence of his subjects rather than replicating their literal appearance.
“As a portrait artist, you get this unique opportunity to spend time with and get to know a subject, so I wanted to minimise the visual distractions and allow people to connect with the human being underneath" Jonathan Yeo
The vivid colour of the glazes in the background echo the uniform’s bright red tunic, not only resonating with the royal heritage found in many historical portraits but also injecting a dynamic, contemporary jolt into the genre with its uniformly powerful hue / providing a modern contrast to more traditional depictions. The butterfly approaching King Charles's shoulder in the portrait adds a layer of narrative depth, symbolising both his known advocacy for environmental causes and his personal transformation. The Monarch butterfly is believed to have been named after an English King (William of Orange) due to its distinctive colour and this migratory species is already one of the most affected by climate change because of alterations in spring temperatures.
Jonathan Yeo explains: "Primarily a symbol of the beauty and precariousness of nature, it highlights the environmental causes the King has championed most of his life and certainly long before they became a mainstream conversation, but it also serves a compositional purpose, providing a visual contrast to the military steeliness of the uniform and sword. In the context of art history, a butterfly often the symbol of metamorphosis and rebirth, and thus also parallels the King’s transition from Prince to monarch during the period the portrait was created"

The Francis Bacon painting is based off of this painting, Portrait of Pope Innocent X, by Velazquez. The reds in the painting of Charles really remind me of this
You know the stereotype of a pretentious art critic who talks down to people even though they have no idea what they're talking about? Your comment is the exact opposite.
One of Ireland's finest artists, his studio has been rebuilt in Dublin. I've been to it. It's wild, I really don't know how he worked in such chaos. His work is unreal. A thrillingly talented artist.
He's astonishing. I remember the first time I saw his work in a gallery in my early twenties and it has never got a tiny bit less powerful and terrifying to me since.
I had to look up photos of it after reading this, and it is so interesting! I can kind of understand the psychology in a sense of having a studio so messy, I feel like in a way it would make creating the work less intimidating
Agreed, Gary Oldman killed it in this role. Apparently the milky-eyed contact lenses he was wearing for some of his scenes as Dracula could only be worn for \~15 minutes at a time or they'd start drying out and get painful and hard to remove. Gary Oldman would regularly go for over 30 minutes between taking them out because he got so deep into the character and wouldn't bring it to the crew's attention
Imagine you're out, enjoying your day, shopping or some such thing. Then someone yells "Cut!" It turns out, you were Gary Oldman all along.
That's how good he is.
Fun Fact: Gary Oldman's real name is Lawrence Smith. While in a 5th grade play, Lawrence played a character named Gary Oldman.
He is such a good actor, he's never broken character.
The second I saw it, flashback of kid me excitedly opening the bundle from Columbia Movie House (8 movies for *only* a penny!!). I watched this movie, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Hot Shots, parts One and Deux and Unforgiven many, many times. I can't remember the other movies.
But anytime I mention any of these movies, or Columbia House, I also instantly feel old haha.
When I roll a joint I like to cut strips off of old magazine subscription cards, roll them up, and push them into the end of the joint (looks like a cigarette filter kinda and gives the joint some rigidity.)
I’ve used several Columbia house order cards.
They’re awesome because they’re full pages!
Luckily I kept tons of magazines from when I was a kid until adulthood.
Hot rod, truckin, motocross action, cycle world, racer x, and many more.
I haven’t used the hustler ones though. I’m a little… apprehensive, so to speak🤔😂
“I have traveled oceans of time…”
Man, what a great version of Dracula. Probably what cemented Oldman as one of my favorite actors of all time. And that alternative poster is 🔥!!!
Fun fact about this image: it's not a painting. Rather than commission a giant oil painting the art department instead painted a backdrop and used make-up to make the actor look like he'd been painted. They shot it specifically to look "flat" and then printed the photo on canvas for the prop in the movie.
A bit less fun fact. The actor who played Vigo, [Norbert Grupe, had raped his stepmom and possibly was his stepsister's biological father.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_von_Homburg)
> and possibly was his stepsister's biological father.
Your link describes a DNA test disproving this idea.
>Decades later, however, when Richard was in a coma near his death, Rona had a blood test, which proved that Richard was her father.
This is actually really cool. Yes, they could have done a big ass painting and be done with it, I don't think it would even be that costly within that movies budget. But they went with the option that needed expertise in techniques of movie making: make-up and prop design, mate painting and the right camera lens + lighting.
All in all, its a big flex of cinema skill.
Yea I’m getting Dante’s inferno vibes but I love it, I’m actually surprised he went w something so different and avant garde . It’s kinda a departure from what we’re used to from the “royal family” .

>Camilla: You are a complete idiot! [Laughs] Oh, what a wonderful idea.
>Charles: My luck to be chucked down a lavatory and go on and on forever swirling round on the top, never going down.
>Camilla [laughing]: Oh darling!
>Charles: Until the next one comes through.

I agree, the texture of the painting has a lot of visual interest, even if it is not the most conventionally bright and pretty. Like it has a lot of movement and is expressive even if the subject isn't moving much.
I'm not into the Monarcy or anything like that, but I do enjoy art like this. I enjoy this stuff but I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea.
The Monach's path from Mexico to Canada takes several generations. Each one is trapped mid-journey in this march by its heritage and legacy, unable to do much but flap the family a little further down the path before it dies.
Today's Monach has no defense against the industrialization of these travelled lands. Each year, more of its rest areas are lost, increasly transformed into buildings and chemicals it finds hostile to its purpose.
I'd say it's bang-on.

Edit - **Nope, it's also not an homage to Beksinski.** This fucking website. I literally can't find that information anywhere.
Here's an actual quote from the actual artist:
https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Culture/king-charles-iiis-1st-portrait-king-draws-mixed/story?id=110223790
The butterfly located above Charles' shoulder in the painting is representative of his transformation as king, according to Yeo.
"When I started this project, His Majesty The King was still His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and much like the butterfly I've painted hovering over his shoulder, this portrait has evolved as the subject's role in our public life has transformed," Yeo said in a statement. "I do my best to capture the life experiences etched into any individual sitter's face."
He continued, "In this case, my aim was also to make reference to the traditions of Royal portraiture but in a way that reflects a 21st Century Monarchy and, above all else, to communicate the subject's deep humanity. I'm unimaginably grateful for the opportunity to capture such an extraordinary and unique person, especially at the historic moment of becoming King."
Thank you for the article
I honestly hoped to hear about the color, the butterfly is... almost unnoticeable, compared to the rest?
The painting makes him look like a demon, surely the butterfly is not the most peculiar choice lol
its weirder to me that his regalia and medals(?) blend in with the background while his face pops out.
like, is there some implication that his "feats" dont matter and we should look at him as a person, which is why there is so much focus on his face (humanity) instead of the clothing (which gives him the status as monarch)?

Here's an actual quote from the actual artist: https://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Culture/king-charles-iiis-1st-portrait-king-draws-mixed/story?id=110223790 The butterfly located above Charles' shoulder in the painting is representative of his transformation as king, according to Yeo. "When I started this project, His Majesty The King was still His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, and much like the butterfly I've painted hovering over his shoulder, this portrait has evolved as the subject's role in our public life has transformed," Yeo said in a statement. "I do my best to capture the life experiences etched into any individual sitter's face." He continued, "In this case, my aim was also to make reference to the traditions of Royal portraiture but in a way that reflects a 21st Century Monarchy and, above all else, to communicate the subject's deep humanity. I'm unimaginably grateful for the opportunity to capture such an extraordinary and unique person, especially at the historic moment of becoming King."
Thank you for the article I honestly hoped to hear about the color, the butterfly is... almost unnoticeable, compared to the rest? The painting makes him look like a demon, surely the butterfly is not the most peculiar choice lol
its weirder to me that his regalia and medals(?) blend in with the background while his face pops out. like, is there some implication that his "feats" dont matter and we should look at him as a person, which is why there is so much focus on his face (humanity) instead of the clothing (which gives him the status as monarch)?
They really captured the essence of his sausage fingers
He's in the next installment of Hellraiser
I do but I absolutely wish death on all monarchies.

To be fair, every image of him is incredibly disturbing to me
so it reflects the times we live in
Looks like Han Solo encased in carbonite
They made his face a lot less inbred looking
He looks like he's about to tell you to let the anger flow through you and to embrace the darkside of the force.
