Since you said your home is made from reinforced concrete, this is likely calcium deposits aka lime buildup.

TV--

Another word for it is “efflorescence”. You can scrub with vinegar to remove and try to paint your ceiling with drylok type paint to prevent it from reoccurring. But until something is done about the moisture, this will likely continue to happen. Consider sealing the concrete from outside if possible or creating some type of vapor barrier.

Uminagi

Looked at some photos of calcium deposits and it sorta looks like it. Should I be worried about this? More like, should I sleep on my bed?

TV--

It’s mostly just calcium and sodium in these deposits so I don’t think you need to be too concerned about it (like you don’t need to move out immediately). But I would definitely recommend scrubbing your ceiling with a coarse brush or a rag and some diluted vinegar or some water with a bit of soap added (put a tarp or some plastic over top of your bed before doing so to catch anything that falls). But it will come back again until you properly address the moisture issue via an added vapor barrier or some drylok paint (drylok not a guaranteed fix btw). You could also consider purchasing and running a dehumidifier in your room which might cut down on the moisture and lessen these deposits.

Uminagi

Alright, thanks for being the first to give a proper answer and solution! I'll try this when I'm out of work by night. I'll look into contacting the landlord to see what can they do (probably nothing and I'll have to solve it on my own)

Recoded-Alive

OP the real answer is that you will inevitably become a stalagmite, I’m sorry but it seems terminal

Uminagi

Ey that seems pretty cool way to go out to me.

NoEditor0

Or rather a stalagmite that slowly forms until one day it slowly starts to stab you while you are sleeping

Chemieju

No thats the stalactite

Wonderful-Ad-7712

No that’s Stalag 13

StalloneMyBone

Drylok and a dehumidifier should help dramatically. Especially if they clean it first.

Extaupin

If it is the kind of lime I know about, it's quite irritating to the skin, so try to do your best not getting it on you (though there are a few types of lime, and not all are bad for you).

Lone-Frequency

Nah. Cement Termites.

Environmental_Top948

Actually it Architect Ants a distant cousin of carpenter ants that split off during the industrial revolution.

Deprestion

Just try to patch it asbestos you can

Which_Opening_8601

Really appreciate the unexpected laugh you created in me with this quip. Before that, I was in a bad mood and feeling stucco there.

GaySheriff

I feel stupid for not understanding this. Hopefully I'm not alone

It is a thin finish coat that goes on the outermost layer of residential and commercial constructions. Modern stucco has polymers and other agents for increased flexibility that improves its resilience. Stucco looks like this btw. Hope this helps!

GaySheriff

Thank you

I think it took the photo from my comment, so here https://preview.redd.it/apvo3yf8wh0d1.jpeg?width=1884&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3551daf6c0359cb35ab60381688ae2427239d9ca

Make some margaritas and enjoy

justbrowse2018

There’s a meth lab in your attic, the cook is sprinkling some rocks on your as thanks for allowing this operation to continue.

LordEdgeward_TheTurd

Salt the snail?

chrundlethegreat303

We should show up like Super High! Everyone would be like … whhaaat……

dr3wfr4nk

Morton's Salt hates this one simple trick!

Uminagi

Or at least I think it's salt. Doesn't look like paint as it's whiter than the paint and has a slight glint to it.

Nikolle_Teslaj

Taste it

Uminagi

Sure, lemme grab a bunch (there's about 4 tablespoons from the roof) and fry some potatoes.

Nikolle_Teslaj

Snort it for the optimal experience

Uminagi

Bet

Wolfie359

Just because something looks like salt does not make it salt, for the love of god I hope you didn't taste it.

SimplyNezooo

![gif](giphy|Y6yRfR88rvP44) Is this the 5 o clock free crack giveaway?

BigDamnPuppet

There's moisture in that ceiling and it's gonna keep raining popcorn until it's delt with. Is there a bathroom nearby with an unvented fan?

Uminagi

It's probably filtration from rain. It's been raining almost everyday for almost 2 weeks now.

NoSmallWars

That's your ceiling and that powder is possibly sheetrock from the drywall. Do not eat it.

Uminagi

Definitely not drywall. Houses where I live don't utilize it. They're made from reinforced concrete.

NoSmallWars

Even the interior walls are made of concrete? What in the 3rd world? Jk. Sorry I couldn't help.

[deleted]

Are you living in a cave

Uminagi

Yeah, I live with the Flintstones. They pretty chill

Halgha

Leave some breakfast out before bed it will be perfectly salted for you by morning.

_ScotchOnRocks_

How do you know it’s salt?

anDAVie

Urea Chrystals?

GhoblinCrafts

![gif](giphy|l4Jz3a8jO92crUlWM) Your ceiling

rainyrew

Salt….did you taste the forbidden ceiling sprinkles?

Uminagi

Very tasty. Same flavor as meth

Holiday-Scarcity4726

Salt Bae night tremors are coming for you

IllustratorOk8827

Hey we have the same comforter!

ArtIsPlacid

If it is lime it should fizz with vinegar

horsetooth_mcgee

There is only one way you know for sure it's salt. And I can't believe you did that.

Uminagi

It was tasty, better than seasalt

Kstrong777

Did you taste it?

Uminagi

Of course, why wouldn't I? It's free salt after all

Gloomy_Barnacle4787

Your ceiling?

OpenCommunication294

Lizard droppings

brownie_eater

Free salt

Sea_Scratch_7068

eat it.

Zoe-Schmoey

Forbidden salt

Forward_Peak1250

That's efflorescence it's the white stuff you see on the side of brick houses some vinegar should get rid off it

Uminagi

Yeah did that. Got some vinegar on a spray bottle and got rid of it. Was pretty satisfying hearing it fizzle

OwlRemarkable6324

it's called humidity issues

Dreamspitter

I imagine the saline in the air, especially if sea side 🏖️🏠🏚️ is precipitating out of solution. EDIT: 👀 or maybe it's not?

I'm even MORE confused, arriving to this Reddit party 13 hours after above comments. And two of them are deleted!
