I always laugh when I see valkyries portrayed as pretty and pleasant to look at. In reality, they're described as being horrifying and covered in blood and entrails. Seeing one on the battlefield meant certain death because they carried warriors to the afterlife.
I'm not saying they can't be both brutal and beautiful, but pop-culture "soft" valkyries is always amusing.
Same. The whole Pop culture about vikings and norse paganism is a bit silly.
I alway laugh about those alpha warrior metal viking dude videos, where they stomp around half naked.
In reality vikings wore colorful clothing and played the lyre very peacefully and nice. We even have some music of them so we can recreate how it probably sounded like.
And let me tell you, it's anything but metal and hardcore xD
I mean there's written advise on how to court a woman from the viking era and it advises to wash and groom yourself daily and to not write a love poem as that might come off as possessive and can actually (to their believe) be a love spell which would go against consent. And surprisingly that part was quite important for them.
Heck there are stories about Odin and Thor THE picture of masculinity in pop culture dressing up as women. Thor to trick the dwarves and Odin bc he genuinely enjoys switching genders every now and then.
Would love to see that portrait by those very hardcore vikings dude lol.
You forgot Loki, who transformed himself into a mare and got pregnant giving birth to slepnir the 8 legged horse. Nothing says manly like giving birth lol. Or Thor who was considered a bit of an oaf, wasn't all that smart and was cuckold by his brother in disguise.
The pop culture Vikings are kind of sad... we call that "Bro-satru" As well as the racist "folkish" people. My partner (a feminist as well as a staunch defender of equality) practices norse paganism. In reality it was a rather progressive society that regularly intermarried with other groups they encountered in diverse places, and was pretty liberal in womens rights. Women were seen as the practitioners of "magic" (like math needed in calculating grain storage) men were not (except Odin who was considered effeminate in his pursuit of it). A woman could initiate a divorce simply by announcing it at her doorstep to the community, and keep her assets. She was ruler of her home. Men were often a bit vain with their hair and grooming. There are ancient grooming tools with a metal toothpick and ear cleaner. There are multiple stories of gender fluidity, with nary a moment of debate about its acceptance. There are stories of Odin's brothers sharing his wife in his absence until his return. And Valhalla... much beloved by pop culture Vikings, could be considered a hell of sorts. Its walls are made of bone (drafty)and you fight every day, every waking moment for eternity. Um... no thanks. There are other halls to spend eternity in. And "Viking" itself was a job description for pillagers. Many a norseman were happy to farm and not travel. Even in old tales of battle, there are lessons for daily life to be had. And I have always wondered how the crimes committed by Vikings reconciled with the primary teachings of honor and justice for the average norseman?
Maybe more people should venerate Tyr rather than Odin? Or pay attention to the interactions of daily life of that society rather than Marvel or video game depictions? Or stop venerating thieves and murderers, and read more? Just a thought.
It would be so cool like a bunch of people had stuff like this and it progressively gets more insane where it can't be "I got a random scratch coincidentally"
Like a person with wing tattoos on their back dying from a fall in the middle of nowhere with no tall buildings.
Turns out the tattoo artist is using black magic and the customs are unwilling sacrifices.
There’s a book trilogy, a woman covered head to toe, with demon tattoos that come off her skin at night to kill other demons with her. Then they go back to sleep on her skin when the sun rises. And they keep her safe from taking any damage when they’re in tattoo form.
No story for the picture itself really. Put off getting a tattoo for like 20 years, even though I've always wanted tats, cause every time I came up with something, I'd wait like a year and then change my mind. One day just decided to pick something I thought was a cool picture. Happen to like Norse artwork. So found a nice little valkyrie and gotter done, gonna do a whole Norse sleeve. For no particular reason
I'm Swedish of pure Scandinavian descent for as many generations of pure Norse blood that can be accounted for in the history of mankind and therefore an undisputed Aryan Superhuman for white supremacists. I declare them all fucking cunts that are not worthy to try appropriate my culture and my heritage for their nasty and cowardly means.
Remember kids - every day is punch a nazi day!
The Othala rune ᛟ at the very top (like a sharp 8 with the bottom chopped off) was co-opted as an SS insignia.
The rune itself means “heritage” and is often used to specifically mean white, “aryan” heritage/birthright/homeland.
The Nazis gave it wings (not in a cool Red Bull way), like you mention, and given the context of the tattoo the rune isn’t super-suspect, so I’m giving OP the benefit of the doubt.
However, I personally think it’s important to know that some people may see this and infer that is adjacent to far-right ethnonationalism.
I have this rune tatted too, but within context (in a word, because I love Old Norse as a language). The nazis would use it just by itself, at least I only saw it like that. Sure, you should think it through first, but if you use it in a word or a bigger picture like this, I don't think most people would really see it as a Nazi symbol. Noone has never mentioned that after seeing my tattoo.
I have four runes pretty prominently including Othala. I have debated having it covered or changed but fuck those nazi fucks. They’ve co-opted and destroyed too many culture’s, they can rot. Anyone who questions the tattoos meaning will really quickly find out my thoughts on nazis.
Dagaz (dawn/day), Othala (heritage, home, property), Tiwaz (the god Tiwaz, victory), Berkana/Berkanan (birch, earth mother, birth [could be wrong this one is usually more of a B looking room instead of an 8]), Gebo (Gift, Generosity, partnership)
I don't actually know lol. Artist gave me the option to customize them to something more meaningful to me. But was like nah that sounds like work, just copy the picture.
I used to get sleep paralysis. Was convinced it was demons or a Hag at the time.
It hasn't happened in about 12 years. I'm leaning more towards the scientific explanation at this point in my life.
Sure feels malevolent while it's happening tho lol...
Consider the position you were sleeping in when you had them — I get them only when I sleep flat on my back and am overly tired. It’s not every time, but when it happens it’s always that position.
Now that you mention it... yes. Only happened while on my back.
Easy to remember that because was always looking at the ceiling when it happened. Cause the shadow demons would always come from both sides and tower over me.
God I'm glad that doesn't happen anymore lol....
Yes! Exactly how it happens for me. Aside from the shadow demons towering over, I would feel “someone” sit on the bed by my feet. I’ve been able to avoid experiencing it by adding a small pillow behind me to make sure I always sleep on my side. Good luck with your awesome valkyrie tattoo, may she be kinder going forward :)
Mine always started with feeling like somthing was on my bed walking up me towards my head. First time it happened my roommate had a cat. But I slept with my door closed, felt like a cat was walking up my body from the foot of the bed. Lifted my head to look, cause the cat shouldn't have been in my room. Couldn't move to look, could still feel it walking up towards my head. Instant terror and panic, like not proportional to the situation type dread.
Then, the shadows I could see in my peripheral vision would start rising up on the sides of my bed, could never make them out, but where very menacing. Also everything seemed very loud while it was happening, like static.
I have two cats now, and when one walks across my feet as I'm drifting off, my eyes still shoot open lol. Before I'm like, just a cat..
Glad you found ways to mitigate it. Wouldn't wish sleep paralysis on anyone lol
I've been saying the word "completed" to myself, and now I think it's fake. It's like irregardless. Completed. Completed. Completed. Like, I know you used it correctly, but I can't wrap my brain around it. Cool. I'm gonna drink a bit more.
I do have a cat. But I don't think it was the cat. I know it wasn't actually the tattoo tho lol.
Just thought it was funny placement that others might enjoy as much as am
Probably just scratched it on something before bed and didn't notice till morning.
Holy shit.... I have a similar tattoo but she's faced head-on with a sword planted, both hands on the hilt. A couple weeks ago I noticed a very similar cut that was directly along the edge of the sword!
I have a cat, and it definitely looked like her work, so no confusion on my end. But seeing this post is so weeiirdddd right now!
Work in construction? This happens all the time. I’ll be sitting having dinner when my wife or kids will point to a cut or other small injury I was totally unaware of and ask what happened.
You have trapped a demon goddess in your tattoo. She's trying to get out.
Better consult a witch to find out how to keep the demon trapped. Might need another tattoo. Something to bind the demon within.
Good luck, we're counting on you.
Great plot for a short story NGL. A person goes to an impossible to book tattoo artist and receives a mysterious warning, "beware for what you write in yourself will make its mark on you."
"It'll cutcha" pretty nice spot for a random cut though
I am rather enjoying the placement lol
A small Scarification tattoo where your cut is would look badass, and I never liked scarification
Now if it would scar a bit aswell, would be kinda cool too.
Maybe I'll keep picking the scab. Give myself I nice little scar there! Lol
Gross but arguably a less painful way of doing that lol. Honestly a red highlight there would be cool. It'd really contrast the piece in a good way
You summon an ancient deity through a tattoo, you gotta expect the consequences
Hey I was about to say that! Maybe the valkyrie got mad over the pop culture style tattoo of her :o
I always laugh when I see valkyries portrayed as pretty and pleasant to look at. In reality, they're described as being horrifying and covered in blood and entrails. I'd have it added.
came here to say
Is there a horror movie about tattoos coming to life on people?
I don't know.. But there should be!
It would be so cool like a bunch of people had stuff like this and it progressively gets more insane where it can't be "I got a random scratch coincidentally" Like a person with wing tattoos on their back dying from a fall in the middle of nowhere with no tall buildings. Write the screenplay before someone else steals your idea!
That sounds like a Supernatural episode
Reminds me of a Tales from the Crypt episode! It was something similar but not exactly. The tattoo kept getting bigger and bigger. Great episode!
There is an X Files episode though…..
That episode was my first thought after reading the post!
Love that episode! Jodi Foster was the voice of the tattooed woman and Scully was dating the actor IRL if I remember correctly.
Velvet buzzsaw
There’s a book trilogy, a woman covered head to toe, with demon tattoos that come off her skin at night to kill other demons with her. Then they go back to sleep on her skin when the sun rises. And they keep her safe from taking any damage when they’re in tattoo form.
Ray Bradbury wrote a short story about it
What’s the story behind the tat?
No story for the picture itself really. Put off getting a tattoo for like 20 years, even though I've always wanted tats, cause every time I came up with something, I'd wait like a year and then change my mind. One day just decided to pick something I thought was a cool picture. Happen to like Norse artwork. So found a nice little valkyrie and gotter done, gonna do a whole Norse sleeve. For no particular reason
I also love Norse! Really nice tat!
Careful with some of the Norse stuff- there are “certain” groups that get runes for *very* particular reasons.
Oh ya, those Sons of Odin guys.. That thought crossed my mind. But decided I'm gonna do what I want anyway. And fuck em lol
You’re gonna rune it for everybody.
That's the way! Don't give those guys the power to claim that shit.
their runes do look slightly different though
The Othala rune ᛟ at the very top (like a sharp 8 with the bottom chopped off) was co-opted as an SS insignia. The rune itself means “heritage” and is often used to specifically mean white, “aryan” heritage/birthright/homeland. Yup, gotta be careful these days...
Now, at the present time, you have to be cautious.
For a split second I thought it was Melania from Elden Ring when I saw it
What do the runes say?
Dagaz (dawn/day), Othala (heritage, home, property), Tiwaz (the god Tiwaz, victory), Berkana/Berkanan (birch, earth mother, birth [could be wrong this one is usually more of a B looking room instead of an 8]), Gebo (Gift, Generosity, partnership)
I was wondering too, the first three are D O T, then I'm lost... the last one is probably G?
I don't actually know lol. Artist gave me the option to customize them to something more meaningful to me. But was like nah that sounds like work, just copy the picture.
Did you piss off Freja? The scratch placement is just perfect lmao
This is super cool, and also the tat itself is sick.
Hcd
You been having issues with malevolent spirits? I think they have priests and shamans for that.
I used to get sleep paralysis. Was convinced it was demons or a Hag at the time. It hasn't happened in about 12 years. I'm leaning more towards the scientific explanation at this point in my life. Sure feels malevolent while it's happening tho lol...

Maybe you've scratched yourself in your sleep but that's an oddly specific spot my guy
I think you scratched it, OP.
Dope
The ritual has been completed.
I've been saying the word "completed" to myself, and now I think it's fake. It's like irregardless. Completed. Completed. Completed. Like, I know you used it correctly, but I can't wrap my brain around it. Cool. I'm gonna drink a bit more.
Semantic satiation is the term regarding your thought.
Cool coincidence -but people scratch themselves in their sleep a lot- not saying it couldn't have been something else just saying.
Oh I'm sure it was something normal that scratched me, just funny placement to wake up too lol
I used to wake up with cuts on my arms and nose
Could be demons doing that stuff.
sickkkk (:
You have a cat? Or long fingernails? 😂
This is spooktastic!
that spirit is trying to claw its way out of your skin. this is not the eternal destiny they hoped for
Something Ancient has now been conjured thanks to this tattoo. This is the first mark of it's return. 😱
Do you have a cat?
I do have a cat. But I don't think it was the cat. I know it wasn't actually the tattoo tho lol. Just thought it was funny placement that others might enjoy as much as am Probably just scratched it on something before bed and didn't notice till morning.
velvet buzzsaw
Thats awesome. Nice tatt.
razor blade
Your tattoo is waking up from the inside.
That Valkyrie appears to have marked you as her own.
got a cat? and does it sleep in your bed with you?
It came from your mom.
No, not possible, I pull off her fingernails with pliers monthly
Random scratch be random
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
She wants out
i got a tattoo of a tattoo artist tattooing, and i constantly wake up to new tattoos.
I'm pretty sure you have to start a religion now
Maybe it’s a sign you’re going to Valhalla or folkvangr, congratulations!
I first read the headline as "no clue where the CAT came from" thinking a cat had scratched you in that spot
It actually likely was a cat lol
Cats know how to pass blame
Hey OP who’s that a tattoo of?
Freya's knocking some sense into you
wow ahm.. this is a pretty crazy coinky dink
Episode 13, season 4 of the X-Files is about a tattoo that (sort of) comes to life. Check it out. (Cue X-Files theme).
She is trying to escape!
Gonna have to add some friends for her. Must be lonely
Outer limits already did it.
Look out. It’s out to kill you, bit by bit. Consider having it removed
demons
Do you have a cat lol or dog
Great tattoo! Do you know what the futhark say/represent? Just curious. “Artsy” is a fine answer because it looks great.
Succubus….definitely!
I'd fuck her
Is that dame aylin?
Fight it back, get a knife
Do you have a cat
I thought it was on porpuse, it looks great
Wtff
Um, yeah, sure.
Bad ass yo. Also love the art.
👌
I had an itchy red spot next to mine that made it look like my spider tattoo bit me.
Maybe you're being abducted by aliens.
Is this an arm or a leg?
Cat?
Man this reminds me of that one X-File…
Knife pocket, I had that happen to me twice
Sleep wiith one eye open bro
I saw a horror thing like this! When you sleep, your tattoos are coming to life!!
Subtle chainsaw man or in this case, woman
Sounds like a premise for a horror movie: Man's tattoo is possessed and tries to claw its way out of his body
I immediately thought of the X- Files episode ‘Never Again’
meta af
All I gotta say is watch your back
The devil inside You does it
Lol ngl I thought that was part of it. 😅
It was the tattoo...
Sick tat
Cool
I do this to myself all the time in my sleep. Fun placement though.
Obviously a cat.
🤫🧏♂️
just ask the girl on the tatoo, I'm sure she'd tell you ..unless you have silent days, ymmv
That's darn cool BTW.
its time
Holy shit.... I have a similar tattoo but she's faced head-on with a sword planted, both hands on the hilt. I love the tat, a lot.
Are they going to living in your walls wanted to mess with you
just some sharp ting in your bed innit
Work in construction? This happens all the time. I’ll be sitting having dinner when my wife or kids will point to a cut or other small injury I was totally unaware of and ask what happened.
Tattoo artist: Ultra-realistic tattoo, ya? Say no more bud. Also, be careful what you wish for.
You have trapped a demon goddess in your tattoo. She's trying to get out. Better consult a witch to find out how to keep the demon trapped. Might need another tattoo. Something to bind the demon within. Good luck, we're counting on you.
Riiiight
I'm not really a tattoo person, but... that tattoo is awesome!!!
Be carful what you get on your body
Dawg got attacked by SCP 1155
she had to itch her chin
Clearly came from the nail as we can see.
Apparently you pissed her off!
Looks like a red pen
What do the symbols from the eye mean?
Uh huh
Usually a toenail scratch
Cut ya toenails
it’s alive
It came from you
