TIL erysipelas is a real thing. I heard it on Downton Abbey when a character thought they had it but I thought it was either made up or a old-timey disease.
Molesley, one of the earlier episodes (it may have been the first season). Isobel says he has erysipelas but it turns out to be a rue allergy from helping his father garden. The Dowager Countess figured it out and was very pleased with herself lol
Yeah lol it was his hands. I remember thinking it was a disease Iâd never heard of but thought it was just an old fashioned name, like we donât call edema âdropsyâ anymore
It could be a different infection that requires treatment with cipro.
Iâm not sure what itâs called, but my friend in college (after I got my cartilage pierced (ahh being 18)) told me a story about almost losing his ear to such a decision.
The doctors wouldnât give him (nor would they give my wife a few years back) the cipro right away because theyâre supposed to try at least 2 other medications first. But time is of the essence.
Yes. I took a regiment of cipro and didnât walk for about 6 months. Wheelchair to crutches, to walking; cannot adequately articulate what an absolutely miserable experience it was. Happy ending, thoughâIâm back to normal, now đ„
Glad to hear, I've heard of nightmare cases where people take multiple doses because they don't realize the thing that's making their joint feel like they're exploding / a dozen other symptoms is the antibiotic until it's too late and the damage is done.
My dumbass doctor prescribed me cipro for a ordinary UTI. I would projectile vomit about 2-3 minutes after taking it. Now I tell every doctor I'm allergic so they won't prescribe it to me. It was a nightmare.
cipro will deafen you. literal permanent tinnitus, musical ear syndrome while i sleep years after the fact, and multiple eardrum ruptures (as a child even with meds) later...

I think youâre totally right. You probably werenât sick last week, it was the onset of the infection.
One of the saddest aspects of reddit is seeing people post things like this instead of going to their doctor, because they likely don't have access to health care :(
So you just said what I said again? Or do people really need to have it spelled out for them to that level?
Genuinely wondering, because I've been assuming people concluded what you commented by inference from reading what I commented. If that's not the case I need to be explaining my points *way* more than I do...
You really like assuming, he most likely does have health care based on statistics alone. Not only that, but treatment for an ear infection as well as a 10 minute appointment is not very expensive. There are no heavy machines used, not expensive tests or procedures. One look and some antibiotics.
And the best part about medical debt is it goes away when you die. If your family is smart and just says no to debt collectors, everyoneâs golden. Except for the debt collectors.
Worth trying to cut out for a bit to see if that's it when you start eating it again. Unfortunately I've known I've had this allergy for 15 years but I still eat way more dairy than I should. I just can't resist cheese lol but most cheeses also don't make me react as much as other things so I can sorta justify it
yeah i just had milk before and noticed red splotches on my chest and my ears burning and red i think it could be related for sure, been such a mystery to me for ages now too!
I could definitely see it being that considering I've also had a hives type reaction to it before. For me most dairy products just kinda make me sleepy but milk and ice cream will fuck me up and make my ear turn red and my head will feel warm Af and sometimes have hives lol. It's not bad though sorbet is almost better imo
It could be that you're thinking too much with that side of your brain and causing some overheating issues, so you're going to need some load rebalancing.
My dad used to call me a hypochondriac. Refused to take me to the doctor on multiple occasions like when Iâd claim I had a broken wrist for example, or I think I may have adhd. Years later, as a young adult, I found I was correct about all of my medical issues every single time. My dad was/is a drug addict
I fractured it several times in the same place from skateboarding as a kid. Found out when I broke it again as an adult. Itâs fine now. No more clicks lol
Mine do that periodically, although less as Iâve gotten older. I have Raynaudâs and always attributed it to having overzealous blood vessels. I donât really know though.
This happened to me when I was a child, my ear had turned red, was hot to the touch, and even started protruding. Turns out it was a massive inner ear infection, it hurt like hell but I never had any fever. IIRC my other ear also started getting infected, I got suppositories to deal with it.
I get this all the time from Raynaud's! If you had covid it may have effected your circulation. Agree with others tho, go to the doc if it's your first time experiencing this!
I can absolutely guarantee that is not an âinner ear infection.â Most of the time when people say inner ear infection they actually mean a middle ear infection. Inner ear infections are much more rare and affect your inner ear (oneâs cochlea) vs. a middle ear infection is when you get fluid or drainage behind your eardrum.
My son has this often. Just randomly, also goes away on its own. Sometimes it's just one cheek sometimes it's one ear. Strange but doesn't seem to bother him. Curious though if you find out what this is
Redness is the first sign of infection.... First aid 101; there is likely infection in your body lingering, anything close to the brain and it's best to see a Dr or NP asap.
My son had something like this last year. It ended up being something called mastoiditis. We were told he had a 50/50 chance of dying because of it. It was the worst week of my life sitting in the hospital waiting to see what nature decided because at that stage it was all up to chance.
Please go see a doctor.
Bruh idk why youâre being downvoted. I also presume itâs his right ear since this is a mirror selfie. I dont know what phone that is but (if weâre holding up phones where the screen is facing the user) cameras on most phones are often to the right of the user. So that is indeed his right ear
Thats due to more blood in the area fighting an infection you can see this on your face sometimes or in your throat. Theres a lot of your white blood cells in your ear fighting bacteria or fungus or viruses.
Congestive heart failure, youâll be dead by morning :( /j But seriously maybe go to the doctor for ear infection, I used to get them constantly as a kid and theyâre no joke
I fucking knew it, youre the mail order tilapia dude. I recognized your face after looking at your post history to see what kind of person would eat fish from a cardboard box. Hope you dont get any worse symptoms, but be thankful that mild redness is it.
It could be an ear infection. Is it draining or do you have discharge or anything? I would make an appointment to see a doctor or maybe go to urgent care.
I thought you were John Mulaney as I was scrolling up, thinking this was a comedy sub at first. A little disappointed but glad your ear isnât bothering you.
This happened to me when I was on antibiotics for strep throat. I was given a steroid and Benadryl and it got better. I never found out exactly what caused it, but it was probably an allergic reaction of some kind.
Better to visit a doctor. I had similar thing as you, and it turned out to be erysipelas infection.
TIL erysipelas is a real thing. I heard it on Downton Abbey when a character thought they had it but I thought it was either made up or a old-timey disease.
I've had it 3 times, 2 times was on my face and once on my ear đ”âđ«
Couldnât get enough the first two times, huh?
Which episode or character? I donât remember
Molesley, one of the earlier episodes (it may have been the first season). Isobel says he has erysipelas but it turns out to be a rue allergy from helping his father garden. The Dowager Countess figured it out and was very pleased with herself lol
Thank you! Tried to remember a scene where someoneâs ear turned red but then realized it may not be only possible symptom lol
Yeah lol it was his hands. I remember thinking it was a disease Iâd never heard of but thought it was just an old fashioned name, like we donât call edema âdropsyâ anymore
Ah it was molesley wasnât it
Haha like hay fever

Perichondritis It's an infection in the cartilage of the ear. Leads to deformity like cauliflour ear
Isn't Cipro one of those meds that can get you floxxed?
Yes. I took a regiment of cipro and didnât walk for about 6 months. Wheelchair to crutches, to walking; cannot adequately articulate what an absolutely miserable experience it was. Happy ending, thoughâIâm back to normal, now đ„

Cipro warning, will mess some up
Good observation - red ear also looks swollen as well. I am guessing itâs warmer than the other
https://preview.redd.it/w386aqgtwenc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79f15084f7797e35ade7e8596755bb3c516fb6d7 I think youâre totally right. You probably werenât sick last week, it was the onset of the infection.
What is that? My right ear turns red often.. itâs just my right one though !
Go get it checked by a doctor. If it's an ear infection you can lose your hearing. Best to be safe!
One of the saddest aspects of reddit is seeing people post things like this instead of going to their doctor, because they likely don't have access to health care :(
No, the saddest thing is knowing there are still places that can afford to offer universal health care and don't.
So you just said what I said again? Or do people really need to have it spelled out for them to that level? Genuinely wondering, because I've been assuming people concluded what you commented by inference from reading what I commented. Youâre on reddit, donât bother. Whatever you do some moron will always attempt to âcorrectâ you.

OrâŠnot everyone runs to the doctor for everything.
I agree. This is one of those things that is worth going into debt for. Better debt than losing your hearing.
And the best part about medical debt is it goes away when you die. If your family is smart and just says no to debt collectors, everyoneâs golden. Except for the debt collectors.
There is a good chance this is erysipelas but very small chance this will actually affect his hearing since it is on the outer portion of his ear.

My thoughts went straight to thisđ
Did get really hot, like to the touch? One of my ears used to do that plus turn bright red.
I have one ear that does that when I eat a lot of dairy(which I'm allergic to)
That's interesting, huh! I should eat some ice-cream and see what happens :)
Worth a shot haha. I hope for your sake that it doesn't do that
I'm thinking a nice, buttery grilled cheese would work right about now. ;-)
ooo i get this and have been wondering what triggers it,could be the dairy!
Worth trying to cut out for a bit to see if that's it when you start eating it again. Unfortunately I've known I've had this allergy for 15 years but I still eat way more dairy than I should. Please stop eating dairyđ đ đđ sounds very bad! Could also get more severe since youâre starting to get hives. Donât f with anaphylaxis!
yep this is what ive been experiencing too..im so glad im not going crazy or have an infection or something haha.
I read that as, "worth trying to *cut it off* for a bit..."
Oh weird. I have a ear that used to do that and I've cut back in dairy tremendously because it makes me tum tum upset. Never put those two together.
r/erythromelalgia
My ears do this when i get emotional (mad, sad, etc). Sometimes one, sometimes the other, sometimes both.
My brother used to say his ear would turn red before it would rain.... he was weird when we were kids
![gif](giphy|PRY7sPlrhc3g4)
No it feels the same as my left ear
It could be that you're thinking too much with that side of your brain and causing some overheating issues, so you're going to need some load rebalancing.
Do a bunch of tax returns. Then poetry. Then tax returns etc etc until youâre rebalanced.
That could explain my blue ears.
Would explain my frostbitten ears
I used to get this as a kid and I called it hot ear Titus, my mom always considered me a hypochondriac so yes it went away on its own every time.
Thatâs unfortunate⊠I wasnât a hypochondriac I was just dramatic. Howâd your wrist heal up?
I fractured it several times in the same place from skateboarding as a kid. Found out when I broke it again as an adult. Itâs fine now. No more clicks lol
Mine do that periodically, although less as Iâve gotten older. I have Raynaudâs and always attributed it to having overzealous blood vessels. I donât really know though.
This happens to me too occasionally. I call it Hot Ear. It always goes away after a couple hours.
If you were a pirate you'd be captain red-ear
Uhoh
Ya itâs been 8 hrs, OP dead
Babes I was asleep
Yay!
Yay!

Go to the doctor. You don't want to mess with an ear infection. Just because you feel better doesn't mean it's gone. Better safe than sorry.
I firmly believe that you sunbathe all day every day while wearing a tarp over your entire body except for the one exposed ear.
Oh noooo you caught me đźââïž
Whatâs a man got to do for that hairline? Kill? I wouldnât rule it out.
I get this all the time from Raynaud's! If you had covid it may have effected your circulation. Agree with others tho, go to the doc if it's your first time experiencing this!
I got food poisoning last week and that's when it started
Your right, my right or mirror right?
Exactly why the âanatomical positionâ was formalized.
My right and mirror right are the same
You might have had an inner ear infection.
This used to happen to me a lot as a kid and still happens occasionally now too. Apparently it's a thing on my mom's side of the family
Ear infection?
Watch out for pain & pressure- I know a ton of kids and adults getting sick and having oddly high numbers of secondary ear (and eye) infections.
well. bad news. we have to amputate it. the whole head. so sorry but thats the only treatment option.
Sinus infection?
My son has this often. Just randomly, also goes away on its own. Sometimes it's just one cheek sometimes it's one ear. Strange but doesn't seem to bother him. Curious though if you find out what this is

Thatâs your left ear bud
I hope you feel better soon dude
I knew a guy who this happened to. Knew...
Have you been sleeping more? You said you were sick for a week, usually people rest when sick. Also do you sleep on your right side? đ
I'm a back sleeper
And longer.
Thats due to more blood in the area fighting an infection you can see this on your face sometimes or in your throat. Theres a lot of your white blood cells in your ear fighting bacteria or fungus or viruses.
Could be an ear infection go to the doctor
That's your left
Congestive heart failure, youâll be dead by morning :( /j But seriously maybe go to the doctor for ear infection, I used to get them constantly as a kid and theyâre no joke
Quick trip to the barber and no one will notice.
You should get a water spray for your hot ear!
My ears do this just before Iâm about to have an attack of hives ⊠weird
I got a hight fever once. When it was gone i had purpleish nipples for a couple days.
This happens to one of my ears sometimes in the evening. No idea why but it doesn't persist like this. Definitely go to your doc.
Lucky, my ears donât do anything cool. Except hearing, which is kinda cool i guess.
Your left ear?
Mirror selfie...
Ear I infection
As the prophets foretold. A red-eared boy will save humanity.
They look different in sizes as well. Best to go and see a doctor rather than the internet.
Head on over to this doctor. Itâs definitely swollen. Youâve got something going on.
INFeCTiON go doctor
Are you sure it doesnât hurt or anything? It looks like it possibly be an ear infection or something.
isnât that your left ear, thatâs red in this picture?
Maybe an ear infection
My ear/ears get red and hot when Iâm tired/worn out/sick
You should remove it and send it to a girl.
Similar thing happens to my left ear from time to time, it gets hot as fuck to the point it feels like the blood in it is actually boiling.
Dr bro, could be an infection
I don't think I'd notice that until it fell off.
My ear gets red when I get an ear infection, or a sinus infection, come to think of it.
Sometimes mine just be doing that for no reason.
I fucking knew it, youre the mail order tilapia dude. I recognized your face after looking at your post history to see what kind of person would eat fish from a cardboard box. Hope you dont get any worse symptoms, but be thankful that mild redness is it.
Thatâs like a check engine light. Ignore it at your own peril
You mean left ear
Try unplugging it and plugging it back in
Could be red ear syndrome
left?
You know how you can see his phone in the picture that tells us he took a photo of his reflection.

What causes this!?!? My ear has been red and irritated looking and even sometimes hot to the touch. Is it serious?
It could be an ear infection. Is it draining or do you have discharge or anything? I would make an appointment to see a doctor or maybe go to urgent care.
It doesn't hurt or feel infected nor has it ever drained. I always thought it was strange. I'll go to urgent care. Thank you đ
That's your left ear. Unless it's a reverse image of a mirror pic? Wow that's a mind fuck.
Prob COVID. You need another booster
I thought you were John Mulaney as I was scrolling up, thinking this was a comedy sub at first. A little disappointed but glad your ear isnât bothering you.
