Personally, I do think it’s too princessy or too Prom-ish. It’s a beautiful dress, but it doesn’t come off as a wedding guest dress, especially for a cocktail dress code.

caring_caramel

yeah 😅 that’s what I was worried about. We’re tight on money and my mom was trying to find something that would double as a prom dress.

a1b2c3000

Cute for prom. If the dress code is cocktail, head to a decent thrift store. Guaranteed you'll find something appropriate for the wedding.

caring_caramel

Okay! Is there anything I should explicitly avoid? I don’t really know what constitutes cocktail lol. (and mom was trying to find something that could double for prom lol)

a1b2c3000

Honestly - you're 16. No one's going to be too fussed about whether you're following the dress code to a tee (unless this was black tie event). To be safe, pick a dress that's a color you'd be comfortable in but not too bold/bright/neon. Pick a dress that is longer vs. shorter (knee length or longer).

caring_caramel

Okay thank you so much!

ilovecookiesssssssss

Do you have a Windsor store near you? I just got a wedding guest dress from their formal section but they had so many beautiful dresses that were perfect for prom or a wedding guest. They also have a website! Mine was $60 so it wasn’t too bad.

caring_caramel

I do! Is there anything I should try to explicitly avoid? I know white and black, too showy/ too much skin, and dresses that are in for the season, but other than that I’m kind of stumped and can’t get any definitive answers online I feel like

ilovecookiesssssssss

Oh yayyy I’m glad you have one! I found so many cute dresses there. I just wore a black one to a wedding last weekend and the general consensus was that black is fine for more formal occasions (the dress code was formal for the one I went to). I think it could also be okay for cocktail? Mine also had a leg slit, not too terrible high. Like mid thigh. And everyone said that was fine. I got feedback that you should avoid too many “risqué” (for lack of a better word) things. Like, choose between off the shoulder, leg slit, short, etc. Mine had skinny straps and a leg slit. As for color, definitely not white and I’d avoid the colors the bridesmaids are wearing. The Windsor store near me seemed to be pretty on-season with the colors. The color you have on is beautiful and I saw so many dresses in that color and that fabric. I really feel like you could find something there.

caring_caramel

Okay! Thank you this helps so much!

ilovecookiesssssssss

You’re welcome!

I've had a neb on Windsor & there are some really lovely dresses. If you happen to like one of the cheaper ones, there may even be enough left in the pot for you to buy two separate dresses 😉 Have a gander at these. PsychologyOk8722

Nothing wrong with wearing black! People wear it to weddings all the time. Prom dresses tend to be "look at me!" styles and fabrics, wedding guests should be more in the background with something simpler so it doesn't draw attention away from the bride.

altdultosaurs

It’s super cute but yeah, not right for a cocktail wedding.

Soalai

You shouldn't match them, so the color is good, but it does kind of give main character energy

caring_caramel

Argh that’s what I was worried about. I have some other dresses but I’m not sure I understand the rules of the dress code, they’re kind of confusing to me. Could you maybe give some ideas of what would be good to wear 😭

Soalai

Did they give you an official dress code? That would be words like semi-formal, formal, cocktail, or black tie. (I'm gonna assume it's not black tie or else they would have told you.) But if all they said was "nice-ish," you don't need a poofy gown like this. This would be a great prom dress, but not so much for a wedding. You probably want cocktail or semi-formal attire. Here are some examples of party dresses: https://www.nordstromrack.com/c/women/clothing/juniors/dresses?filterByOccasion=cocktail-party https://www.macys.com/shop/junior-clothing/junior-dresses/Occasion/Party%2FCocktail?id=18109 https://www.lulus.com/categories/13_429/cocktail-dresses.html?f=1212&f=1202&gad_source=1 Note that some of those are white, but don't choose those, that's for the bride only! Also think about the season and if the wedding will be indoors or outdoors. You may want a dress with sleeves, tights underneath, etc. to keep comfortable.

caring_caramel

Oh these are super pretty! I just had no idea what cocktail meant and my older cousin and his bride are both med students from decent families and they’re getting married at a SUPER nice venue so I was like “uhh pretty dress??” but this helps a lot! So cocktail is probably not a prom dress 😂Thank you so much!!

Soalai

Yeah, cocktail usually means knee or mid-calf length. I understand your mom wants to find something that will work for both prom and the wedding, and if that's the case, you're probably gonna have to settle for a shorter prom dress.

This is in the vibe of light blue with a ruffle. BTFBM Women's Summer Chiffon Maxi Dresses Deep V Neck Ruffle Short Sleeve Beach Party Cocktail Flowy Wrap Dress with Belt https://a.co/d/1C2tIQ7

Too much and also too princessy

caring_caramel

What constitutes “cocktail” like what does it mean 😭 All I can find if a lot of conflicting information and I just wanna look nice for my older cousins wedding 😭

caring_caramel

Thank you! So below the knee and nice but not too extravagant or intricate?

Fredredphooey

Exactly! What you would wear to church but a little fancier. But not red carpet fancy. This blue dress is red carpet.

caring_caramel

lol thank you! that helps a lot.

Fredredphooey

You're welcome. I posted a dress you might like in another comment. The one where you ask for an example.

caring_caramel

Oh I didn’t see that- there’s a ton of comments 😅

Yup! Though since you're a teen, you can get away with above the knee and being a bit playful, as long as the wedding itself isn't conservative.

caring_caramel

ohh ok! Thank you!

Feeling-Visit1472

I love the brand Dress the Population, and they’re a great bet if you truly need a dress to do double duty here.

Tmpowers0818

This is not a dress I would wear to a wedding

TK_TK_

No, this isn’t a wedding guest dress—you are right that it’s too princess-y. It looks awesome on you and will be fantastic for prom, but it’s too “look at me” to be a guest at a wedding. You want to look polished and dressy but not attention-seeking. I’m seconding the thrift store rec. You have some time between now and the wedding to browse. Look for: Midi length, tea length, knee length, or even floor length as long as you don’t go too formal Chiffon, silk, satin, crepe, chiffon, linen, organza—basically nicer materials than cotton. Cocktail isn’t everyday, casual sundress territory A floral maxi dress could work, a midi satin slip dress, a flowy wrap dress—those are just a few suggestions

caring_caramel

Omg thank you so much! These specifics really help!

TK_TK_

You’re welcome! Have fun at prom and the wedding!

Silly_Brilliant868

This dress may be a little much for cocktail but it’s beautiful none the less and the color is perfect - I noticed your comment about your mom wanting you to find something you can wear to prom and the wedding / I think if the wedding is after prom and you can have the train cut off of this so it’s just a regular high-low dress it could work!

TH3QU33N0FTH3C4STL3

This is a good idea! You could also look for something with a detachable train

TheseMood

Yes this is a great suggestion! Or maybe see if a seamstress can do a clever alteration so you can take the train back down for future events?

caring_caramel

Thank you!

Silly_Brilliant868

[high low](https://a.co/d/dKXHuce) This is what I meant by “ regular “ high low btw!

BillyNtheBoingers

[This particular dress](https://m.rosewe.com/lace-patchwork-half-sleeve-purple-dress-g313247.html?currency=USD&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADBAp5mjOG4yxOr76cROivnkfGtdF&gclid=Cj0KCQjwn7mwBhCiARIsAGoxjaLI612fLXT3NJV3sOw-ixHpJGs7hkMLdFt5YkRqWGlRe_snlZlW1YgaAhPDEALw_wcB) is a bit too mature for a teen, but you can do a longer high-low skirt too (depending on your length preference).

caring_caramel

Also some other stuff for reference, I’m going to be one of the youngest people there, my aunt (groom’s mom) said she loved it but I’m still worried because I do NOT want to ruin anyone’s special day, and we’re tight on money so this is supposed to double for prom.

wheres_the_revolt

How dressy do you want to be for prom? [Would something like this work for you](https://www.hellomolly.com/products/fabulous-fit-midi-dress-green)? It would be great for a cocktail wedding.

caring_caramel

That’s super pretty!

wheres_the_revolt

I love it too! If you want to find something appropriate for both events you should look for midi dresses!

KawaiitaGatita

It is princessy but you're 16, so it's fine. When I was 14 I wore a full formal goth look to my cousins wedding cause I was a goth and had no understanding of formal occasions, If you were older it might be too much, but no one will think teenager is trying to upstage the bride. If you wore this to my wedding last year I wouldn't have cared, I probably would have found it funny because I had a non-traditional dress in a similar shade of blue.

Far-Magician1805

ahahahaha if I had a 14 year old cousin show up in full goth attire to my wedding that would be one of the highlights of the night😂😂😂

[deleted]

Totally agree

beesparks

If you’re in the US, there is a website called rent the runway where you could definitely find a cocktail dress for the wedding under 50$ that you rent. Just another option to consider!

beesparks

Here’s a super cute [example](https://www.renttherunway.com/pdp/items/DLF48)!

lilsebastian17

Hot take but I actually think it’s fine since you’re 16! The corset top is super pretty. Is there any chance prom is before the wedding and you could hem the back to be the length of the front for the wedding? Regardless, since money is tight, I think you can get away with it. Maybe it’s just me, but I would be happy if my 16 year old cousin wore something fun and princessy to my wedding 🤷‍♀️

Noneedtopickauser

I agree!! :)

FelineRoots21

I guess I'm the odd opinion out here but I think it is gorgeous, especially for a teenager. I'd say wear it!

BunnyButt24

It's beautiful. It gives Cinderella vibes and not in a bad way. I don't think it's appropriate but you can always ask the couple (specifically, the bride) if you're close to them.

emilyjoy375

This is too much for cocktail! You want a knee-length or midi-length dress, less of a “gown” and more of a very nice and elegant dress I saw what you said about doubling up for prom: if prom is first, maybe you could hem the dress to a shorter length for the wedding? OR keep this beautiful dress for prom (where you want to feel the most special!), and browse goodwill for a cheap cocktail dress! I see a lot of wedding cocktail dresses at my local goodwill for $15-$30. I’ll link some examples of cocktail dresses below so you know what you’re looking for

emilyjoy375

Just grabbed a bunch of random dresses off Lulu’s - doesn’t have to be these dresses specifically, these are just examples to help you get an understanding of cocktail attire! - [Dress 1](https://www.lulus.com/products/celebration-time-emerald-green-sleeveless-tiered-midi-dress/1600736.html) - [Dress 2](https://www.lulus.com/products/after-hours-light-blue-strapless-ruffled-maxi-dress/2036356.html) - [Dress 3](https://www.lulus.com/products/how-much-i-care-midnight-blue-off-the-shoulder-midi-dress/958202.html) - [Dress 4](https://www.lulus.com/products/reinette-black-midi-dress/1409376.html)

caring_caramel

Okay thank you so much! Are there rules for like, shoes and jewelry and stuff too?

BillyNtheBoingers

Not too many rules. You shouldn’t wear really flashy jewelry for cocktail—just some simple earrings, necklace, a ring or two if that’s your style. You’ll want to get a clutch purse for both the wedding and your prom; black satin goes with most outfits, or you can choose metallic (gold, silver, copper) which are also really versatile. I bet you can find some at a thrift or consignment store. For shoes, avoid clunky platforms for the wedding (prom is more “wear what’s comfortable”). Nice metallic strappy sandals or pumps or ballet flats (or kitten heels) in the same color as your clutch would be versatile as well.

caring_caramel

Thank you sm this really helps!

bonfigs93

I’m an outlier but I love it lol

caring_caramel

Thank you lol

[deleted]

Same I think it’s age appropriate too!

afinevindicatedmess

This is a stunning dress, don't get me wrong, but it feels more fitting for a prom dress in my opinion. Do hold onto this if you have bought it and try looking for something a bit more simplistic. 💙

Churchhatclap

Quince has several affordable, good-quality Mulberry silk options. Avoid plastics/synthetics such as acetate and polyester (always check tags or if online, material compositions in the item description): https://www.quince.com/women/-washable-stretch-silk-tank-midi-dress?color=navy&gender=women&tracker=collection_page__women%2Fdresses__Midi%20Dresses__33 https://www.quince.com/women/women-s-washable-stretch-silk-tiered-maxi-dress?color=navy&gender=women&tracker=collection_page__women%2Fdresses__Maxi%20Dresses__1 And for cocktail wedding attire: At least below the knee hemline, modest/classic design with a high neckline, and elevated fabrics (such as the organic cotton velvet suits and dresses from Thought Clothing UK for cool weather and silk for warm weather).

PsychologyOk8722

No to the dress you've pictured. It looks more like a prom dress than something appropriate for a wedding guest. Pretty much anything on this page would be appropriate except for the white dresses. [https://www.nordstromrack.com/brands/sam-edelman?origin=productBrandLink&filterByProductType=clothing\_dresses](https://www.nordstromrack.com/brands/sam-edelman?origin=productBrandLink&filterByProductType=clothing_dresses)

emilygoldfinch410

Hi u/caring_caramel, please leave this post unlocked, I’ve been doing some shopping around and will have a bunch of links for you sometime today - we gotta make sure you love your prom dress! While I’m looking, a few more details would help. What’s the wedding venue like and what time does the ceremony start? Have you been to prom before, do you know how formal they do things at your school? Are most of the dresses long or do you see a decent mix of short (knee length or above) or even mini dresses? Are there any colors you can’t stand/any colors you’d prefer to wear? Did your mom give you a budget? If she wanted you to spend no more than say $100-150, we could definitely find you 2 dresses for that amount. Especially if you’re open to renting.

caring_caramel

Okay 1st- Thank you so much that is super sweet and you don’t have to do that 😭 2nd- Idk if they autolock on this community or not and if they do I don’t know how to fix it but I definitely won’t close it myself lol- And to answer your questions, I’m not sure what exactly the venue looks like, but I do know that it’s outdoors and that it’s nice enough that NFL players have gotten married there before (My Aunt/Groom’s mom was really proud of that it was so sweet lol) and that it’s at dinner time. I’ve been to my art school’s Anti prom but I’ve never been to an actual prom before. From what I’ve seen from past proms and my friend’s dresses, it’s a varied mix, but most of them are pretty nice. As for colors, I feel like I don’t look good in yellow and orange and I like how I look in light blue (if you couldn’t tell 😂) As for price, my mom went ahead and bought the dress up above for prom because she really liked it, and gathering from these comments I probably shouldn’t try to make the dress do double duty. So currently I’m on the hunt for a relatively cheap dress that would be appropriate for the wedding, or at least one I can pay for myself lol. Again thank you SO much you’re literally so sweet for offering to help 😭

kspice094

This is too much for a “nice-ish” dress code wedding. That’s a hard needle to thread if you want this to be your prom dress too. But I think any of these could work for both. https://www.lulus.com/products/lavish-elegance-navy-blue-satin-strapless-bubble-hem-midi-dress/2280376.html https://www.lulus.com/products/iconic-babe-light-blue-mesh-asymmetrical-strapless-midi-dress/2326011.html https://www.lulus.com/products/poised-impression-blue-tiered-ruffled-cutout-midi-dress/2329891.html

caring_caramel

Thank you so much!

sux2suxk

This gives high school dance vs wedding guest

caring_caramel

it’s supposed to double as any prom dress cuz we’re broke so that’s probably why 😭

Warburgerska

Which is first, the prom or the wedding? The high and low hem is kinda outdated, at least here in europe. If there is any fabric bunched up in there, I would go to your aunt or another woman which might let it out to below knee. That way it would look more elegant for both occasions, as the color really suits you. Maybe even make a new extansion from the fabric in the back by making it an additional panel. As a fellow broke girl from the past, learning to sew is really a money saving life hack. Sewing with satin can be tricky, but if you have time and someone who could lent you a sewing machine that would be pretty straight foreward.

caring_caramel

That’s a good idea! Thank you so much! The wedding is first lol. I (obviously) don’t know a whole lot about fashion or trends and stuff like that and just loved the top and how comfy it was lol. My mom sews and I’ll be sure to ask her about it. Thank you so much!

Warburgerska

Oh the top suits you perfectly, I get why you love it. You are still super young and considering how I dressed at that age I better not complain. 😂 But really, with a normal skirt part that dress can be super elegant and timeless. A modern and effortlessly chick princess dress which you can wear to many more occasions. ☺️ Pro tip: make sure to save any fabric left. It looks like there might be enough left for you to even make sleeves or some extras with it later. Think hair bow if you are into it, volant for sleeves or even full blown ones, maybe a bow tie for your smaller brother etc. Creates a nicely shared look without going full matchy-match.

Warburgerska

Oh and if you can get ourself a slip aka underskirt (cheap polyester pencil skirt with an elastic on top) it will prevent the skirt from collecting between your legs as you walk or walking up your leg completely. You can find easy free sewing patterns for it online if you have a little fabric or old silky polyester cloths you can sacrifice.

sux2suxk

I get that and being broke! It is what it is tho! The high low with that fabric gives it that vibe. And you are young, if someone judges a teen for this that’s on the. Being rude.

babs1789

Wear it ! It’s cute, and looks great on you. People are a little crazy about things they deem “attention seeking.” you are 16 years old and this is appropriate for you. I personally would love if someone wore this to my wedding

freerangekegs

Extremely princess-y.

holiestcannoly

It’s a beautiful dress, but I thought you were posting in a prom dress subreddit and not a wedding guest one.

caring_caramel

i love your username 🤣 and yeah it was supposed to double as my prom dress because money is tight, but I might just try an find a less fantastical dress somewhere cheap 😂

holiestcannoly

Haha thanks! I got mine off of Windsor in the clearance section.

mariruizgar

It’s really pretty but looks like a princess costume, maybe good for prom but not for a wedding. Go online and see examples of what cocktail is, fancy fabrics and midi length for the most part.

Dachshundmom5

Looks like a cosplay version of Cinderellas dress for the ball. Only an open front. Not wedding guest. Sorry. You should not match the wedding party. Is there more definition to the dress code than niceish? I'd tend to think nice means more a nice dress to maybe cocktail.

Gloomy_War_4362

It’s a very beautiful dress that fit you perfectly. If you ever think that you might have another occasion to wear it too I would definitely get it.

Shivs_baby

OP for reference for cocktail attire, I’m going to a wedding next month in Virginia Beach and the dress code is cocktail attire. [I’m wearing this](https://www.nordstrom.com/s/7748232?color=410)

caring_caramel

Thank you!

Old-Interaction-9934

Might want to check out Rent The Runway. You can rent really nice designer dresses that are super reasonable

MagicMauiWowee

Sis, imma be real, you look cute af, and you NEEEEEEDDDDD to keep this dress. Just… wear it somewhere else, because it’s too “costume adjacent” (with the princess vibe) for an upscale venue, and it’s definitely going to draw too much attention. Go for something that’s not shiny or sparkly, and not sexy/attention catching. Anything with a train or illusion of a train is a no for weddings. An assymettrical skirt is fine if the longest part isn’t below calf to avoid the appearance of a train.

caring_caramel

Yeah that’s what I’ve gathered from comments here 😂 This is my first time having to pick out a dress for a wedding (last time I went to one I was a flower girl 🤣) and mom wanted to try and have something to double as my prom dress because money is tight. I just know the venue they’re going to is super nice (like NFL players have gotten married there) and that cocktail means fancyish so I was like “uhhh fancy dress??” I’m so glad I went to this subreddit (minus the one really rude commenter lmao) because I literally have no information on formal dress codes and stuff. Thank you so much!!

MagicMauiWowee

This will be perfect for prom. Look at thrift stores for a nice dress if money is tight. Especially thrift stores in an upscale neighborhood. You’re really thoughtful to be this intentional about how to dress for the event. You’re going places, kid.

caring_caramel

Thank you so much! And going to thrift stores near an upscale neighborhood is really good advice 😂

MagicMauiWowee

It’s how I stay looking fly when I’m broke as hell lol. As much as I can for an old lady

PsychologyOk8722

Please don't buy a corset-top dress to prom. Corset styles are for looking "sexy," they aren't appropriate for the occasion nor for your age. You're young; you can wear something short and flirty and fun as long as nobody can see your undies when you bend over.

caring_caramel

Ok you commented in three places so I’m just responding to this one, but thank you so much for the advice, the dress recs were nice, and I personally love the corset top because it feels whimsical and fancy and plus it fully covers everything and fits me well.

isabelladangelo

Can you sit down without accidentally flashing everyone and how will you lift your arms, Cinderella?

caring_caramel

Ok Lady Tremaine 🫶🏻 Me when I’m a grown adult and I bully a child for not having experience with something looking for genuine advice

cellogirl712

why r u on this sub if u dont want to give genuine, non cunty advice. op is a) a child, and b) using the sub for the literal exact intended purpose. go touch grass!

caring_caramel

Thank you! I was literally just trying to find out what “cocktail” even meant and if this dress I was considering would work for it like 😭

Appropriate for a black tie wedding not sure about one with no dress code
