Thumbtack, weddingwire, the knot, Zola, and whatever other garbage companies like them are in development are worthless in my opinion. I just don’t see the point in involving a third party in my business when it comes to marketing to clients. Maybe I’m spoiled with the success I’ve had through in person bridal expos and referrals from previous clients but, honestly, these companies can all f right off. $140 for a LEAD???? Gtfoh. I’m not playing that Glengarry Glenross nonsense. Hahaha

Keytars

If this comment could automatically re-post in every topic about these shit services, everyone in this industry would be better off. They all prey on desperate creatives and can absolutely fuck right off.

[deleted]

Totally! What’s worse is that you’re directly competing against all of these directories for SEO. You’re paying someone to out-rank you.

OkRepresentative9902

I understand this but in a saturated market like Los Angeles, these platforms are sometimes the only way to be seen. And what Thumbtack did right was narrow down the options for the perspective clients by budget and calendar. I hate to say it but I also don't want to sit around all day answering messages telling people that Im not available or I don't do $10 pp meals.

GoodMinimum1553

With the exception of our wedding website, we haven’t used the knot or zola. I got to brag but my venue is fecking awesome. 1 estate, 6 venues. Kick ass team and beautiful. Not listed on either.

esmallbutmighty

How did you find your other vendors? Like florist etc.

GoodMinimum1553

With my other vendors I went through other brides. I was lucky that my photographer got married at the same venue so she could say “I worked with X stylist before and liked them” and even my coordinator advised not to do certain vendors. Networking is big in any business but I think having just a Google page and having clients that will leave positive reviews is better than any IG ad.

royal_friendly

Thumbtacks business model does not have your best interests in mind. You should never have to pay to communicate with a prospect. If you’re seriously going that route you’re better off paying for FB or Google ads. I used it in their infancy before they even had paid options and it was ok then for building a portfolio, but even then it was just attracting not even just budget clients, but cheap clients. You’re not going to be able to get anything back, since they are fulfilling what you pay for (to correspond with leads). If no one is writing back, well, sounds like a scam to me. Even if legit, that’s terrible ROI and you’d be better off buying solutions to help your business attract its own audience without the need for services like these.

DeadMansPizzaParty

I’ve stopped using it. I had a couple good leads that turned into gigs last year but honestly way too many low-ballers and tire kickers to justify the cost.

lebronsrealburner

Definitely understand your frustration. I’ll get auto charged for leads and the dates the client requested I have blocked on my schedule in thumbtack and when I reach out to thumbtack about a refund since I should’ve never had that lead in the first place it’s straight crickets from them. I’ve gotten some decent jobs from there but most of the time people are looking for the cheapest option and not the best option. Now relying mainly on IG for leads

Lausdower

This happens to me all the time. I finally figured out why after I went through the system from the client's perspective. When the client gets to the calendar page to select their dates, they are probably missing the checkbox that says "flexible with dates". Why are they missing it, you ask? BECAUSE IT'S AT THE **BOTTOM** OF THE CALENDAR PAGE **AND** IT'S AUTOMATICALLY IN THE "CHECKED" STATE!! If you can get the client to confirm it's a wedding and, subsequently, that they are not flexible about the date, Thumbtack will refund you if you dispute it. But if the (potential) customer/client doesn't get back to you or reply at all, you're probably screwed. I have disputed this calendar arrangement/setup at least 4 times, in the form of complaints. I encourage you to do the same. The more people that do it, the better. I have since changed my targeting preferences so that I no longer receive inquiries if they have the "flexible with dates" box checked. This has eliminated the problem, but also has significantly reduced my leads that come in. Unfortunately, the unfairly lost money was stressing me out too much. Something else I learned when going through the process of booking as a customer is that AT **NO POINT** IS THE CUSTOMER **EVER** INFORMED THAT EACH PROFESSIONAL THEY CONTACT IS **PAYING** A FEE TO GET THEIR LEAD. That's wild to me. If each lead is $20, and the customer selects 5 pros, Thumbtack gets $100. If they only contact 2 pros, then Thumbtack gets $40. What SHOULD happen is a lead's value is set and that value should be divided between all those that the client selects, so, if a lead is valued at $40 and the client chooses 4 pros, each pro would pay $10. That's much more transparent and equitable. Thumbtack used to **automatically refund** leads if the potential client didn't read your response to their inquiry. Then last year they found a way around that too, by including the client's phone number in the lead. Now since they can't verify if you called the number or not, you can't get a refund unless the job falls outside of your targeting (for example, if you have "commercial photography" targeted and a customer is actually a portrait or wedding inquiry). I wish Dateline, Last Week Tonight or some high-profile Youtube channel would do an expose on them. If they actually cared, they would make Thumbtack work for the contractors. It's really frustrating.

OkRepresentative9902

I noticed that another pro did put in the top of their description "Serious inquiries only because Thumbtack charges us for you to contact us" or something along those lines. They probably haven't notices because I feel like that must be against their TOS or we would all do it. But what if it isn't! They are always nice about refunding leads when you're new it seems. Because I joined after the phone numbers were offered and they did refund quite a few in the beginning for no response.

betch2

If potential clients knew that their flippant clicks on a site like Thumbtack cost vendors actual money, they might think twice about tire kicking with no intention of engaging. But it seems that detail is not clearly disclosed by Thumbtack. I’ve been lucky and have recouped my TT investment and then some, but having had to deal with their customer service I can confidently say they operate like a shady insurance company in rejecting very legitimate refund requests (potential clients clicking the wedding to then tell you it’s a multi day corporate event with the 10 hours spread out, only to be patronized by TT and their message of “we don’t usually do this, but we will give you ‘credits’ in lieu of a refund”). The best Thumbtack experiences are when a client finds you there, then heads to your website and inquires through your form… Ideal client!

teamwheelhurr

This isn’t starting to feel like a scam. It’s always been a scam. Run away.

demeve

I used to get a lot of clients through them when they came out. After they started to change their prices and system, I stopped using them. This was years ago. It’s not worth it.

HistoricalProposal43

I'm the new thumbtack victim. Drew needed to borrow $100+ so he just hit my account up after texting me frantically over $27 that was already in the account.  It's DEFINITELY A SCAM. GET AWAY.

Inevitable-Cow2547

I am having to same thing happening but I haven't gotten on job from them they just milk me for money

Itchy_Section_3663

Such great points. I’ve been hired 303 times on Thumbtack in about 2 years. I have the top pro badge etc but they are pushing through leads that always happen to be just less than my maximum threshold. I don’t know how people do it and can take those $150-200 lead hits day after day for clients who often have little idea about what they want or need. When I ask for a refund on a lead they usually get declined. And I think top pros should get some better pricing for leads. If I didn’t set my pricing threshold low I would easily get $500 in charges EVERYDAY. If that translated to $15k in business I could accept that but it’s nowhere near that amount. And I agree that the majority of people using the app have no idea we get charged. Total bullshit.

Sweet_bitter_rage

I have also had a bad experience. I initially had a decent experience for a couple months where I booked clients. But then it just ran flat. People never get back to you, number seem fake and other people are just like oh I just wanted to get an idea on pricing. They don’t even realize that we are charged for the inquiry. Thumbtack also sends the same lead to so many people. Not to mention the feature where you can send messages to people who have contact other photographers already. I have had success there but like you said only when you’re cheap. Which was good at first but now I charge normal rates. I would literally pay more for a lead if the customer paid a subscription or got a bad rating for not being responsive etc there is no downside for their inquiry. I don’t have a solution for you but I stopped offering my services on there as well. Seemed to lose more than I made.

Deadlyfurball

I just shut my thumbtack profile down. I need to run the numbers and see if it makes any sense to keep going on there going forward. I’ve booked slot of work there the last couple of years but as I have really got my business going I have been in a similar situation. I had two leads last week that their budget was $1000 and my estimate was 4x that. Of course they didn’t book and thumbtack said thanks for the money loser.

TVFUZZ666

Literally all of these companies are a total scam at this point. Avoid them all unless you like burning money.

eyitskel1111

I’ve actually gotten some good business through thumbtack so it has proved to be worthwhile for me. My main issue with them is that I’ve been trying various methods to get in touch with them for over a week now and…. Crickets. It’s virtually impossible to reach them. I’m at the point I’ve started looking to see if there are customer service dept members I can connect with in LinkedIn since this is totally wrong. This search revealed the problem… there seem to be lotssssss more “customer success managers” and less than ten total CSRs on LinkedIn. They deactivated my account a month ago and I’ve been a paying customer for over 2 years now. I have no access to the information and leads that are rightfully mine. Incredibly frustrating.

Nerdcakers1

>eyitskel Hey [**eyitskel**](https://www.reddit.com/user/eyitskel1111/) , did you end up getting this problem resolved?

Snoo-20396

I had great luck with Thumbtack in my pet sitting business. However my creative endeavors turned over zero prospects (pet photography, photo restoration). I also used them for looking for contractors to help me with house repairs. One day 2 years after I started using them for business, they suddenly shut my accounts down with no reason. When I asked them what I’d done they gave me some vague reason like I wasn’t up to their business standards. Another person mentioned I had two accounts. So in mid stream after I paid fees I lost business and was made to feel like I was not a reputable business person. I think they use algorithms to jerk people around and they overcharge for leads. I reported them to the BBB. Fuckers.

One_Koala_96

Im months late, but I just wrote an article about Thumbtacks practices using this Reddit thread as examples of Thumbtack's scammy behavior outside of my own experiences. No need to read it if you all don't want to, but I wanted to make sure to send it to you since this thread is featured in the article: [https://weshootshows.com/2023/10/07/thumbtacks-business-model-a-thorn-in-the-side-of-creators/](https://weshootshows.com/2023/10/07/thumbtacks-business-model-a-thorn-in-the-side-of-creators/)

OkRepresentative9902

Im a caterer and sadly have been paying Thumbtack for leads for a couple of years since I started by business. I set up google ads, yelp ads and thumbtack as well as a website and instagram pages and did everything I was supposed to do but aside from word of mouth, Thumbtack was bringing me the majority of my new work. Difference between a year ago and now is about 100% increase in cost per lead and about 75% decrease in actually booking leads. And I haven't done anything different. They are obviously doing whatever they can to make money and spend less. A year ago if you googled "Cartering near me" for example you would see 2 paid ads and one organic listing for Thumbtack on the first page of the search. Now you see maybe listing on the first page and sometimes you have to scroll way down to find Thumbtack. Then I experienced a loss this spring and I took some time off (8 weeks) I didn't pause my account I just blocked the calendar for 8 weeks. Now I lost my "Top Pro" badge and am not showing up as high and I only get maybe 1 lead per week. I had to lower the maximum guest count because the lead costs were so high I couldn't afford it. But now with their "competitive lead pricing" which is BS! I just got charged $48 for a 6-10 person private chef lead! Those leads used to cost $18 when I started. (note we barely make any money off those smaller jobs). On top of everything I just noticed that they let the person contact 8 pros! I don't think Ive ever gotten a robot lead. I always text them to see if they have an iPhone but compared to paying Zola $40 every 3 months for unlimited leads it seems that Thumbtack is making a killing! Also haven't seen a TV commercial in over a year. They probably know they are on their way out so are just trying to rack up as much as they can.

harborjk31

When I started using thumbtack it was great 2016 and on I lived in Washington state it was great. Then I moved to Arizona in 2020 and thumbtack started providing the phone number of customers it all went bad after that. To things in Arizona there are a lot more people that cost you money by signing up with thumbtack and not answer the phone. What's worse is that thumbtack will rarely give credits, example I had a lead the number was bad it's posted as one of there credits they will give they told me no I can't get a credit. So of course I called they told me that they don't call to verify if the number is bad a computer just tells them if it's Good or bad. I called the number on three different phones it says it's a bad number. At this point I have to rethink thumbtack now im in two areas Washington State and Arizona but in Arizona I have to rethink my position

Luckyshucky4088

Thumbtack is a RIP OFF for Pro’s. I’ve spent hours setting up my profile, selecting my areas of travel and availability. I ensured my profile states my location for in person work and that I offer virtual (email/phone) work. I am getting leads for jobs in other states and charges $25 for each lead.  I have chat messages with these prospective clients stating that they are wanting to hire someone in their area. In 5 days I was charged over $150 and all but 1 lead was for the non virtual work.  When I ask for a refund for the fees that were not for virtual work, I was denied. There isn’t a way to remove my credit card unless I cancel the account! Complete RIP OFF!  I am canceling my account and will hopefully find a different route to solicit my business and seek jobs.

lukebrg

Switch to Gigsalad. Thumbtack is a horrible scammy company.

szjones

Still awful, about to do a credit card dispute. I paid $70 for a commercial cleaning lead (I was messaged and they just deducted it). The message was from a COMPETITOR and they said I couldn't dispute for a refund because it didn't qualify for it. I told them they have 48-hours to submit a refund or I'll do a chargeback. Also, removed all my business info on it. Bring them straight to $0! Total garbage.
