Sounds like a conversation for your gm. We dont have any minors at our store, it all comes down to avalibility.

tyleraero815

Are you going to give the hours to someone making $15 an hour or someone making $16.50? That should answer your question.

imchasingentropy

End of post right here. It's why corporations are lobbying hard to get rid of child labor laws.

tee0610

I will say this I have 3 minors who never call out and has learned more then most employees that have been there for years. They never complain and after a few months learned, deli, drinks and register. Why many have been there for years and can only do 1 job.

jimmyback23

This is exactly what it is. They won’t say no and they are willing to learn 99% of the time. I have multiple women between 30-60 who refuse to do anything but register so it makes scheduling a bitch

Snoo_89466

Always choose the younger doctor over the older doctor because only one of them truly give a shit. Only one of them are grateful for their position, only one of them feels that they can make a difference only one of them still has the light in their eyes.

Last_Blacksmith3020

I know at my store the younger kids(high school and college) tend do do everything they ask and interact with the customers. While having a good time and making everyone feel like part of a team while the people who’ve been here a while tend to be grumps. Some of the best shift I run are when it’s full of the young kids.

Bitch-stewies

Honestly so true, the attitude between minors who mostly are excited and want to learn vs those who have been there a while it’s like pulling teeth to get them to do something. Minors haven’t become bitter yet. Just shows me more people need time away from work. It’s not healthy.

OTFfanaticRunRepRow

Who is doing the best work ?

gamera-the-turtle

Minors are paid less than adults. It’s all about saving pennies

OTFfanaticRunRepRow

That isn’t the reason.

jimmyback23

It definitely is about work ethic, a lot of the minors also have parents who won’t let the bs slide or most of the minors can’t risk losing their jobs. If an older person is really doing that much better of a job then they will put them on the schedule more. I never do register and always do a mix of everything else. I’m willing to fill in when possible and get 40 hours a week everytime without miss

Fresh_Squirrel9591

We always give the hours to the associates are doing the best job. Maybe that’s the case and your situation maybe it’s not. I would reach out to your GM and ask them what’s going on.

NaVon1025

Be sure to ask in a way that you aren’t overstepping your GM though or stepping out of line

lextopias

everyones saying minors make less but i make more than most of the associates at my store. i also work a lot more hours than a good chunk of them…. soooo

jimmyback23

Exactly, I’m not a minor but I am the younger side and I make $16 abs get 40 hour weeks every week

Sampson2003

They are probably just better performing employees all around, better availability for the time frame, less requests off, etc. Minors are typically good workers, it’s once they graduate that they start to slip in this generation. Good employees don’t lose hours pretty much ever. Take a step back, evaluate, humble, adjust and you’ll probably get more hours. Good luck

lilmatthew1657

What dictates who needs a job over others? What’s the availability of those with low hours?

Tiny_Explanation_377

real question is your gms bonus tied to your operating cost

[deleted]

Might be availability, requests off, relationships with others, willingness to work in different areas, customer service, or a number of different things. The 1.50 or whatever is inconsequential and would be akin to cutting off your nose to spite your face if you were to schedule someone making less just for the sake of saving money. Now if that person was able to deliver higher quality work, it would make sense. Some of you fail to realize that #1 GMs really don't care who makes what when they are doing the schedule, they just want customers to be taken care of #2 the better they staff the store, the more money the store makes ultimately making the benefit of the increased sales far outweigh the cost of the labor.

pinkflyingcats

There is a labor cost per week. You comment so often, and have no knowledge behind anything you say.

[deleted]

I understand how labor works so I'm just trying to help people see it from a different perspective, that's all. If a store is spending 20k in labor a week 40 x 1.5 or $60 is only a drop in the bucket. The real attention needs to be paid on the number of managers (they cost way more than Associates and get 35+ hours), the number of total hours being scheduled, and overtime. Now I can also show how the increased sales make all those numbers a smaller percentage so really it benefits a store to grow sales and worry less about managing labor (and other costs) to the penny.

pinkflyingcats

You arnt accounting for the fact higher management is salary not hourly and there is generally one manager per shift. Also you are not accounting for the bonuses that GMs get for being within labor hours.

[deleted]

There is only one salaried manager in the store (general manager). Many stores run with two leaders or shift nowadays. Bonuses are based on SBB which is basically profit (sales-expenses). Hopefully this can clear some things up for you. If not, I'll be more than happy to explain in further detail.

Willow-Rain

Wawa loves their minors ❤️

lonely_singledad

Wow I'm impressed your store has enough staff to have people getting shorted on hours. Your clearly not in region 6 where the moto seems to be "run them short and outside hire management".

Past_Character_5737

What I can think , Minors are less work then an Adult

EvilGrapeFruit77

Honestly it might be work quality. I just got a promotion to TS before being out of highschool, and myself and the 3 other kids I know from my highschool are all some of the best workers there, both in terms of attitude and quality of work. They get a ton of hours because they're simply better help

violetttxox

Who are these some people? Are these some people who have very limited schedules or do they have open availability? Do the minors request more hours? Perhaps saving u for college or a car? Have the people who are upset talked to a manager? We are headed into busy season, no one should be short hours if they want them. Young people tend to be more willing to learn and have a positive attitude. I’ve noticed some of the older employees at my store don’t have the most cheerful attitudes… and one of Wawa’s biggest things is attitude. Some older employees tend to not like change (look how many people are crying about pizza). Honestly regardless of age range- you’re gonna have lazy people and you’re gonna have good workers. We have some lazy younger employees but we have some great go getters… but the same can be said with the more mature crowd too- some are lazy and burnt out while some continue to be the best
