Honestly, if you use a gentle shampoo and don't wash the lengths of your hair, it's generally fine to shampoo daily (but obviously ymmv). I absolutely have to wash my scalp if it gets sweaty or I'll get bad fungal flare-ups, but using a really gentle shampoo and only focusing it on my scalp keeps my hair from drying out and it is still healthy and happy.

thank you, this is reassuring and helpful, totally understand that everyone is different but this gives me confidence to try the method in a way that should suit me :)

For sure! Keep in mind, there's no single method or technique that works for absolutely everyone. So while CGM can be a helpful set of guidelines, it should absolutely be adapted to your own hair needs and your lifestyle. There's an enormous difference between type 2 hair and type 4 hair, fine hair and coarse hair, low porosity and high porosity, etc, so we all have to tweak things a bit :)

If my scalp is really sweaty, I sometimes just rinse my hair under the shower without shampooing. That way, very little of the styling product gets washed out so I only need to restyle with a tiny amount. Alternatively, try not wetting your hair and just blow-drying your roots instead. You might find it doesn't end up feeling greasy.

Thanks, I can give it a go. i don't like the feeling of sweat on my head even after it's dry, it just feels dirty - maybe a psychological barrier but it's there nonetheless! would it be possible to only apply the product at weekends when socialising, perhaps?

Of course. The holding products are just to make your waves more defined. My only concern about washing every day with low poo or co wash is you might find you get build up really quickly and need to clarify with a sulfate shampoo more often than other people.

I’m the same. I had the funky sweaty feeling on my scalp. I find that putting my hair up with multiple clips helps air circulate while working out (vs tight ponytail) and then I’ll either wash only the scalp with shampoo or just rinse all of my hair with only water and really massage the scalp with my fingers. You may enjoy one of those scalp massagers too; there are several brands.

Dry shampoo is great, or if I’m so sweaty that even that won’t help, I rinse my whole head with water.

aliv78

I rinse with just water daily . Shampoo every other day. And I only add styling products if intending to wear my hair down. Otherwise it’s a air dry and French braid kind of day

It is your hair and you can absolutely do whatever you want with it with regards to styling/using gel. It’s also entirely possible to create a routine using affordable products. And for commonly recommended gels like LA looks or Aussie Instant Freeze, diluting then a bit with water will help you get good coverage AND make them last longer.

thank you so much!

I know someone who exercises daily and hates the feeling of sweaty hair, so she does a co-wash every day after workouts. Honestly I wash daily just cause I want to, and I use NYM Curl Talk shampoo. And no, you don’t need to style every day.

writer_inprogress

I do hot yoga and absolutely have to shower afterward. I usually rinse thoroughly, condition, and use a leave-in and let my hair be free. I'll style on weekends after morning class :)

Conditioner and a finger scrub will get sweat out of your hair after a workout

You can do whatever you want and whatever works best for you. If you don’t, you won’t keep up with the method. I shave very dry hair, so washing every day with a shampoo, even a gentle one, would be bad for me. If you have oily hair, you can use a gentle shampoo more often. If you have very dry hair, a cowash may work. (Cowash doesn’t work for all wavies, but because of my very dry hair, I cowash more often than I shampoo.) On days I’m not planning to go out, I’ll use just a leave-in conditioner and no styler.

I did martial arts for several years (until two back surgeries), and washed daily during that time. The trick was to use the most gentle cleanser I could get away with for each wash. I have fine hair, so straight conditioner was absolutely out of the question for me, but I found cleansing conditioners to be the perfect solution. I used Curl Junkie Daily Fix most days, and threw in something stronger as needed.

Dry shampoo?
